Oxford University Press The Invention of Marxism
Book SynopsisHow did one man''s critique of capitalism guide the course of modern history? When he died in 1883, Karl Marx left behind an intellectual legacy of formidable proportions and revolutionary potential, yet one that exerted limited actual political, social, or economic influence. The full force of his ideas did not come into play for another generation, and only after they had been appropriated and applied by some of Marxism''s earliest proponents. The history of Marxism, in other words, is the story of those who brought Marx''s ideas into play, transforming a sweeping but fractious and occasionally abstruse view of historical and social forces into a coherent plan of action. Christina Morina''s illuminating book focuses on the first generation of Marxists who turned the work and ideas of one social theorist, one among many, into one of the most powerful transnational political movements in modern history. The Invention Of Marxism is therefore a group portrait, featuring such figures as Rosa Luxemburg, Max Adler, Jean Jaurès, Eduard Bernstein, Karl Kautsky, and Vladimir Lenin German, French, Russian, Czech whose lives became dedicated to interpreting and applying Marxist thought. They were the vehicles by which his ideas were read, debated, and gradually adopted in socialist movements across Europe. Morina''s fascinating book therefore reconstructs the beginnings of Marxism through the individual politicization of a group of intellectuals who made it their purpose in life to solve the ''social question'', exploring the nexus between their intellectual constructs and social and political reality. The Invention of Marxism shows how what started as a theory of capitalism grew into a fully-fledged political philosophy and platform, one that shaped the century that followed Marx''s death. In short, it reveals how an idea first conquered these individuals and then the world.Trade ReviewMorinas pen-portraits - fine-grained, deftly interlinked - are superb. Oxford University Press The Oxford Handbook of Political Theory
Book SynopsisLong recognized as one of the main branches of political science, political theory has in recent years burgeoned in many different directions. Close textual analysis of historical texts sits alongside more analytical work on the nature and normative grounds of political values. Continental and post-modern influences jostle with ones from economics, history, sociology, and the law. Feminist concerns with embodiment make us look at old problems in new ways, and challenges of new technologies open whole new vistas for political theory. This Handbook provides comprehensive and critical coverage of the lively and contested field of political theory, and will help set the agenda for the field for years to come. Forty-five chapters by distinguished political theorists look at the state of the field, where it has been in the recent past, and where it is likely to go in future. They examine political theory''s edges as well as its core, the globalizing context of the field, and the challenges presented by social, economic, and technological changes.Trade ReviewReview from previous edition 'This is a unique and impressive set of analyses about scholarship in political theory. It is comprehensive, as we would expect. Beyond that, it is remarkably creative in the way that Dryzek, Honig and Phillips have organized categories, and it includes much overdue reference to scholarship on non-Western and postcolonial thought.' * Iris Marion Young, Late Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago. *'This extraordinary series offers 'state of the art' assessments that instruct, engage, and provoke. Both synoptic and directive, the fine essays across these superbly edited volumes reflect the ambitions and diversity of political science. No one who is immersed in the discipline's controversies and possibilities should miss the intellectual stimulation and critical appraisal these works so powerfully provide.' * Ira Katznelson, Ruggles Professor of Political Science and History, Columbia University *'Under the general editorship of Robert E. Goodin, a large group of intellectually attractive authors has charted the entire field of political science in an unbiased multi-paradigmatic way. Minerva's owl would make a nice logo for this monumental collective work of the Oxford Handbooks: what moves us forward is looking back at what we know.' * Claus Offe, Professor of Political Science, Hertie School of Governance, Berlin and Institute for Social Science, Humboldt University, Berlin. *Table of ContentsI. Hachette Books Among the Braves
Book SynopsisHong Kong was an experiment in governance. Handed back to China in 1997 after 156 years of British rule, it was meant to be a carve-out between hostile systems: a bridge between communism and capitalism, authoritarianism and liberal democracy. One country, two systems kept its media free, its courts independent and its protests boisterous, designed also to convince Taiwan of a peaceful solution to Beijing''s desire for reunification.Yet this formulation excluded Hong Kong''s own people, their future negotiated by political titans in faraway capitals. In 2019, an ill-conceived law spear-headed by a sycophantic leader pushed a third of the city to take to the streets in one of the most enduring protest movements the world has ever seen. Xi Jinping responded with a draconian national security law that sought not only to end the demonstrations but quash the problem of Hong Kongers'' identity and desire for freedom.Reverend Chu, who believed Hong Kong had to carry the spi

Book SynopsisExamines Ronald Reagan's political development from New Deal liberal to conservative Republican. This book argues that Reagan's presidency cannot be fully understood and evaluated without significant attribution to the spiritual, political, and economic beliefs that he formed during his journey from Democrat to Republican.Trade ReviewRonald Reagan’s Journey is an important book, a significant addition to our growing knowledge of Ronald Reagan. -- Martin Anderson, Keith and Jan Hurlbut Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford UniversityEveryone knows that Ronald Reagan started as a 'New Deal Democrat' and ended as a conservative Republican. But what, exactly, does that mean? And how did it happen? In Ronald Reagan’s Journey, Edward Yager answers those questions in a systematic, scholarly fashion for the first time. Cambridge University Press Demand for EU Polity Building in the Shadow of
Book SynopsisThe Russian invasion of Ukraine came on the heels of a series of crises that tested the resilience of the EU as a compound polity and arguably re-shaped European policymaking at all levels. This Element investigates the effects of the invasion on public support for European polity building across four key policy domains: refugee policy, energy policy, foreign policy, and defence. It shows how support varies across four polity types (centralized, decentralized, pooled, reinsurance) stemming from a distinction between policy and polity support. In terms of the drivers of support and its changes over time, performance evaluations and ideational factors appear as strong predictors, while perceived threat and economic vulnerability appear to matter less. Results show strong support for further resource pooling at the EU level in all domains that can lead to novel and differentiated forms of polity-building. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Russian Populism
Book SynopsisRussian populism, the belief that the peasantry embodied authentic Russian identity and once liberated from their poverty would lead the country to a brighter future, has animated Russian thought across the political spectrum and inspired much of Russia''s world-historical literature, music and art in the 19th century. This book offers the fullest and most authoritative account of the rise, proliferation and influence of populist values and ideology in modern Russia to date.Christopher Ely explores the complete story of Russian populism. Starting from the cursed question of how to reconnect the popular masses with the Europeanized elite, he examines the populist obsession with the peasant commune as a model for a future socialist Russia. He shows how the desire for revolution led Russian radicals to flood into the countryside and later to pioneer terrorism as a form of political action. He delves into those artists influenced by populist ideals, and he tells the story of the collapse oTrade ReviewDr Ely has written a book, accessible to students, on the populist movement among educated Russians after the abolition of serfdom in 1861. He explains how populists understood the newly-freed peasantry, how they imagined the peasants could be incorporated into the rest of society, and their hopes for a progressive future for Russia. The book ranges from terrorism to populist-inspired literature, art and music. Tracing the movement’s origins before 1861, examining its theory and practice, its legacy in the 1905 and 1917 revolutions, and making astute comparisons with American populism, the author breathes new life into the topic. * David Moon, Emeritus Professor, University of York, UK *Taken as a whole, this book has two features unusual in a work introduced as “a survey for the use of students and those unfamiliar with the history of Imperial Russia”. First, it is original. … It is still the first attempt known to me to write a cultural history of Russian populism—the first attempt to consider the great Russian writers and artists as part of the history, which also includes the going-to-the-people movement and Narodnaya Volya. The second striking feature of this book is its sensitivity to the complexity of the subject. Simplification is the common coin of textbook writing, and the history of Russian populism is a topic that would seem to require simplification at numerous points. But somehow Ely has managed to produce a history of Russian populism that conveys a sense of the difficulties of the topic—the complexity of motives and arguments and the narrative twists and turns—and still remains clear and compelling. This is a most impressive book. * H-Net *Russian populism has long needed reexamination, and Christopher Ely brings new research and fresh insights to the task. Moving beyond the traditional definition of populism solely as a form of revolutionary ideology, Ely approaches it as a cultural phenomenon extending throughout the political spectrum and manifested in all forms of creative expression. His account is a rich but concise intellectual and cultural history addressing critical issues driving intellectual debates and political struggles in late Imperial Russia. With its clear and accessible style, the book provides a valuable synthesis for students while offering scholars a compelling perspective on a topic that has often proven elusive. * Nathaniel Knight, Professor of History, Seton Hall University, USA *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Introduction: Toward a Definition of Russian Populism 1. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Memory Politics and the Russian Civil War
Book SynopsisIn examining the re-emergence of Russia's White Movement, Memory Politics and the Russian Civil War gets to the heart of the rich 20th-century memory debates going on in Putin's Russia today. The Kremlin has been giving preference to a Soviet-lite nostalgia that denounces the 1917 Bolshevik revolution but celebrates the birth of a powerful Soviet Union able to bring the country to the forefront of the international scene after the victory in World War II. Yet in parallel, another historical narrative has gradually consolidated on the Russian public scene, one that favours the opposite camp, namely the White movement and the pro-tsarist groups defeated in the early 1920s. This book offers the first comprehensive exploration of this White Revenge', looking at the different actors who promote a White and pro-Romanov rehabilitation agenda in the political, ideological and cultural arenas and what this historical agenda might mean for Russia, both today and tomorrow.Trade ReviewEngaging with cutting-edge social theory and illustrating [the book's] arguments with examples from Hungary and Lithuania. * The Russian Review *Memory Politics succeeds in being both accessible and authoritative: it can be read with interest by specialists and by advanced undergraduates. It traces the political debates during the Soviet, Yeltsin, and Putin eras around the legacy of the “Whites,” who defended Tsarism during the Russian Civil War (1918–21). * CHOICE *The book is very compact and provides a lively and informative overview of memory politics in contemporary Russia, focusing mostly on the period between the late 1980s and 2017. * Canadian Slavonic Papers *What an enlightening and compelling book! Memory Politics and the Russian Civil War proffers a compelling and uniquely rich tapestry of politicized memory that WEAVES together past and present, secular and religious, left and right, in a mix of vibrant narratives that continue to inform the ideological struggle for the “Russian soul” driving the Russian body politic under Putin. * Nina Tumarkin, Kathryn Wasserman Davis Professor of Slavic Studies, Harvard University, USA *Powerful, rich and timely book exploring the collective memory (and political uses and abuses thereof) of one of the most conflicted pages in Russian history – Russian civil war. Laruelle and Karnysheva give us one more key to understanding contemporary Russian identity through the lens of Russia's uneasy relations with its own past. * Elena Morenkova Perrier, Independent Scholar, France *Laruelle and Karnysheva’s study of the reception of the White movement in Russia today is a timely and important contribution on post-Soviet memory politics. In exploring inter-connected and sometimes competing varieties of ‘memory activism’ amongst both state and non-state actors, the authors highlight significant debates concerning conservatism, nationalism and Russian identity. * George Gilbert, Lecturer in Modern Russian History, University of Southampton, UK *This book is much broader than the title suggests. Through the prism of debates over the rehabilitation of major figures once vilified by the Soviet regime, it provides a handy guide and introduction to the knotty problem of defining Russian patriotism today. Compact and lively, it will be of interest to anyone interested in contemporary Russia and will make an excellent text for the classroom. * Eric Lohr, Professor and Carmel Chair of Russian History and Culture History, American University, USA *Table of ContentsList of Images Introduction 1. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Right to Resist
Book SynopsisWhile the idea of total revolution seems anachronistic today, there is increasing consensus about the importance of new forms of political, ethical, and aesthetic resistance. In the past, resistance was often motivated as a form of protest against specific institutions. Increasingly, dissent has become integrated into the fabric of modern life. This volume addresses new forms of resistance at a level that combines a rootedness in the philosophical tradition and a sensitivity to rethinking the possibility of emancipation in today's age. The work focuses on contemporary social and political philosophy from a perspective informed by critical theory. The text specifically addresses three challenges. (1) Critical theorists need to investigate in which ways resistance, conformism, and oppression oppose and constitute each other. (2) The relationship between the theory and the practice of resistance needs to be posed anew, given recent protest movements and media of protest. (3) It needs to bTrade ReviewWhat counts as resistance and when resistance is justified remain strongly contested questions. This volume seeks to bring clarity to the debate by providing a very welcome expansion of the theoretical focus beyond narrowly defensive notions of resistance and beyond the Global North. * Robin Celikates, Professor of Social Philosophy, Freie Universität Berlin, Germany *Are there rights and obligations to resist and even revolt against oppressive regimes and hegemonic social orders? What tactics can best promote social change? Drawing on a diverse array of sources from Continental and Intercultural philosophy and social theory, the twelve timely essays in this engaging volume offer provocative analyses and innovative strategies for addressing these and related questions in our contemporary situation. * Eric S. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Ayn Rand and the Russian Intelligentsia
Book SynopsisThis book examines the writings of the American novelist Ayn Rand, especially The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957), which Rand considered her definitive statement about the need for an unregulated free market in which superior humans could fully realize themselves by living for no-one but themselves. It explores Rand's conception of American identity, which exalted individualism and capitalism, and her solution for saving the modern American nation, which she believed was losing the spirit of its 18th- and 19th-century founders and frontiersmen, having been degraded morally and economically by the rampant socialism of the mid-20th-century world.Derek Offord crucially goes on to analyse how Rand's writings functioned as a vehicle in which she, a Russian-Jewish writer born in St Petersburg in 1905, engaged with ideas that had long animated the Russian intelligentsia. Her conception of human nature and of a utopian community capable of satisfying its needs; her Trade ReviewDerek Offord’s lively, authoritative and controversial book underscores Ayn Rand’s Russian intellectual roots and — more importantly — the habits of mind that she applied later in writing her famous American novels. Offord highlights aspects of American (and not only American!) radical libertarian politics that have been little recognized up to now but deserve remembering. * Gary Hamburg, Otho M. Behr Professor of the History of Ideas, Claremont McKenna College, USA *The high priestess of American capitalism was actually a Russian Nihilist gone rogue. That is the unlikely message of Derek Offord’s challenging and engrossing study, which shows how Ayn Rand turned upside down the utopian dreams and literary traditions of Russian radicals and wrote a series of ‘capitalist realist’ novels. Although living more than fifty years in American emigration, she remained, Offord argues, ‘a typical representative of the Russian intelligentsia’. * Geoffrey Swain, Emeritus Professor (School of Social & Political Sciences), University of Glasgow, UK *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Book Synopsis'Enormously readable...excellent' Dominic Sandbrook, Sunday Times 'A superb piece of thorough journalism' David Aaronovitch, The TimesNigel Farage is arguably one of the most influential British politicians of the 21st century. His campaign to take the UK out of the EU began as a minority and extreme point of view, but in June 2016 it became the official policy of the nation after a divisive referendum. In Michael Crick's brilliant new biography, One Party After Another, we find out how he did it, despite never once managing to get elected to Parliament. Farage left public school at the age of 16 to go and work in the City, but in the 1990s he was drawn into politics, joining UKIP. Ironically, it was the electoral system for the European Parliament that gave him access to a platform, and he was elected an MEP in 1999. Little, Brown Book Group The Terror Years
Book SynopsisTen powerful pieces first published in The New Yorker recall the path terror in the Middle East has taken from the rise of al-Qaeda in the 1990s to the recent beheadings of reporters and aid workers by ISIS. With the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Looming Tower, Lawrence Wright became generally acknowledged as one of our major journalists writing on terrorism in the Middle East. This collection draws on several articles he wrote while researching that book as well as many that he''s written since, following where and how al-Qaeda and its core cult-like beliefs have morphed and spread. They include an indelible impression of Saudi Arabia, a kingdom of silence under the control of the religious police; the Syrian film industry, then compliant at the edges but already exuding a feeling of the barely masked fury that erupted into civil war; the 2006-11 Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza, a study in disparate values of human lives. Duke University Press Selected Writings on Marxism
Book SynopsisThroughout his career Stuart Hall engaged with Marxism in varying ways, actively rethinking it to address the political and cultural exigencies of the moment. This collection of Hall''s key writings on Marxism surveys the questions central to his interpretations of and investments in Marxist theory and practice. It includes Hall''s readings of canonical texts by Marx and Engels, Gramsci, and Althusser; his exchanges with other prominent thinkers about Marxism; his use of Marxist frameworks to theorize specific cultural phenomena and discourses; and some of his later work in which he distanced himself from his earlier attachments to Marxism. In addition, editor Gregor McLennan''s introduction and commentary offer in-depth context and fresh interpretations of Hall''s thought. Stanford University Press The Global Rise of Populism: Performance,
Book SynopsisOnce seen as a fringe phenomenon, populism is back. While some politicians and media outlets present it as dangerous to the U.S., Europe, and Latin America, others hail it as the fix for broken democracies. Not surprisingly, questions about populism abound. Does it really threaten democracy? Why the sudden rise in populism? And what are we talking about when we talk about "populism"? The Global Rise of Populism argues for the need to rethink this concept. While still based on the classic divide between "the people" and "the elite," populism's reliance on new media technologies, its shifting relationship to political representation, and its increasing ubiquity have seen it transform in nuanced ways that demand explaining. Benjamin Moffitt contends that populism is not one entity, but a political style that is performed, embodied, and enacted across different political and cultural contexts. This new understanding makes sense of populism in a time when media pervades political life, a sense of crisis prevails, and populism has gone truly global.Trade Review"Everybody must have heard by now that the so-called 'specter of populism' is once again haunting Europe, the US, the whole world! Obviously, something other than banal paraphrases of Marx is urgently needed to explain populism's complexity. Benjamin Moffitt provides exactly that. His innovative ideas will undoubtedly fuel academic debate for years to come." -- Yannis Stavrakakis * Aristotle University of Thessaloniki *"In the increasingly crowded field of populism studies, The Global Rise of Populism develops a fresh approach. It is a must-read for researchers and students of global populism, the media, and politics." -- Carlos de la Torre * University of Kentucky *Table of ContentsContents and Abstracts1Introduction: The Global Rise of Populism chapter abstractThis introductory chapter sets the scene by outlining the rise of populism across the globe over the past two decades, and introducing the key arguments, themes and structure of the book. The chapter makes the case that we need to rethink populism in an age of media saturation, communicative abundance and a wide perception of global crisis. It does this by focusing on populism's position in a shifting media landscape; populism's genuinely global dimension – which moves beyond the Americas and Europe to also take in the Asia-Pacific and Africa; and arguing that populism is not an ideology, strategy, discourse or political logic, but rather a distinct political style comprised of 1) appeal to 'the people' versus 'the elite', 2) 'bad manners', and 3) crisis, breakdown or threat. 2The Problems with Populism chapter abstractThis chapter traces the historical development of the term 'populism', tracing its etymological roots from the US Populist Party of the late nineteenth century through populism's conceptual 'journeys' across the twentieth century, before providing a critical overview of contemporary debates about how to define it. It identifies the four central approaches to populism in the current literature – populism as ideology, strategy, discourse and political logic – and outlines the key authors, central arguments and key features of each approach. In doing so, it balances the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches, overall showing that while the features of populism that each approach identifies may be valid – for example, nearly all agree on the centrality of 'the people' versus 'the elite' or some Other – there are problems with the social science categories they use to describe the phenomenon. 3Understanding Contemporary Populism: Populism as a Political Style chapter abstractThis chapter develops the concept of political style as a new way of thinking about populism. Synthesising work on the concept in the fields of rhetoric, political philosophy and political sociology, it defines political style as the repertoires of embodied, symbolically mediated performance made to audiences that are used to create and navigate the fields of power that comprise the political, stretching from the domain of government through to everyday life. It then uses this concept to understand populism. This is done inductively, by examining the cases of 28 populist leaders from around the world, and determining what links them in terms of political style. The three key features of populism thought of in this way are: appeal to 'the people' versus 'the elite'; 'bad manners'; and crisis, breakdown or threat. The chapter then sets out the positive ramifications of using this new conception of populism. 4The Performer: Populism & the Leader chapter abstractThis chapter addresses the specific role of the populist leader as the key 'performer' of contemporary populism. It considers the centrality of leaders within populism, arguing that they should be focused upon above and beyond parties and movements when studying the phenomenon. It then examines how these leaders must negotiate between appearing as both of 'the people' as well as above 'the people' at the same time, balancing performances of ordinariness with extraordinariness. In terms of ordinariness, it looks at populist leaders' 'bad manners' and efforts to distance themselves from 'mainstream' political leaders, focusing on how they flaunt expectations of how politicians are 'supposed' to act. In terms of extraordinariness, it shows how populist leaders present themselves as the embodiment of 'the people', often through performances of strength, health and virility, and how this links with classic notions of the body politic. 5The Stage I: Populism & the Media chapter abstractThis chapter addresses the media as one of the key 'stages' upon which contemporary populism plays out upon. It seeks to answer the following questions: what is the relationship between the media and populism? How do populist actors use media, and how do media cover them? And what have changes in the media landscape, particularly the emergence of new media, meant for populism? In doing so, the chapter examines the links between contemporary populism and the mediatisation of politics, whereby politics is increasingly reshaped and changed as the influence of the media grows. It presents a case for understanding populist actors' nuanced adaption of new media technologies and strategies as a central factor in the spread of the phenomenon, while also reflecting on the role of media control and celebrity within contemporary populism. It finally addresses what the shift from old media to new media has meant for contemporary populism. 6The Audience: Populism & 'The People' chapter abstractThis chapter turns to populism's central 'audience' – 'the people' – and investigates the way that populist actors use mediated communication to construct, portray and render-present 'the people' in contemporary populism. It seeks to answer a number of important questions: what processes are involved in speaking for 'the people'? Who are populist performances actually aimed towards? And why do some characterisations of 'the people' gain traction, while others fail? Challenging claims that populism is a 'direct' or 'unmediated' phenomenon, it introduces the concept of mediation in order to better understand these processes. It does this by considering the role of images and media spectacles in presenting 'the people' in contemporary populism; outlining the differences between populist audiences and constituencies when speaking for 'the people'; and explaining how media are never just neutral 'loudspeakers' for populist performances, but actually active participants, often presenting themselves as proxies for 'the people'. 7The Stage II: Populism & Crisis chapter abstractWhile the received wisdom in the literature on populism is that crisis is a trigger for populism, this chapter offers a new perspective, arguing that we should also consider how populism attempts to act as a trigger for crisis. This is because crisis is never just a neutral or objective phenomenon, but must be performed and mediated by certain actors – something populists tend to do well. Conceptualising crisis as the 'spectacularisation of failure', the chapter shows how populists use crisis to pit 'the people' against a dangerous Other, radically simplify the terrain of political debate; and advocate strong leadership and quick political action. In making this argument, the chapter suggests that we should move from a conception of crisis as something that is purely external to populism, to one that acknowledges the performance of crisis as an internal feature of populism as conceptualised as a political style. 8Populism & Democracy chapter abstractThis chapter tackles one of the most controversial debates when it comes to populism: what is populism's relationship to democracy? Arguing that populism itself tells us very little about the substantive democratic 'content' of any political project, the chapter undoes the strict binary between populism and democracy that is often invoked in the literature by instead examining both the democratic and anti-democratic tendencies within populism as conceptualised as a political style. In doing so, it shows that these tendencies can operate concurrently, with populists flaunting their democratic tendencies at the same time as undoing democratic guarantees. Overall, it demonstrates that questions about populism's relationship to democracy should not always be taken at face value, as they often conceal larger questions about what constitutes 'correct' or 'legitimate' forms of political practice. 9Conclusion: The Future of Populism chapter abstractThis chapter draws together the arguments made within this book about populism as a political style and discusses the implications for our understanding of the relationship between contemporary populism, media, crisis and democracy. It shows that contemporary populism should be conceptualised as a distinct political style; that populism cannot be understood without considering the role of media; that crises do not just trigger populism, but that populism attempts to trigger crises; and that populism is a global phenomenon. It also identifies future avenues of research that the book has opened up. It closes by considering the future of populism across the globe – specifically arguing that populism is here to stay as a permanent feature of contemporary democratic politics – and why we need to continue to pay attention to populism's changing shape.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd After Nativism: Belonging in an Age of
Book SynopsisIncreasingly, many people in democracies are turning to a strongarm politics for reassurance against globalization, uncertainty and precarity. In countries ranging from the US and the UK to Brazil, India and Turkey, support has grown for a nativist politics attacking migrants, minorities, liberals and elites as enemies of the nation. Is there a politics of belonging that progressive forces could mobilize to counteract these trends? After Nativism takes up this question, arguing that disarming nativism will require more than improving the security and wellbeing of the ‘left-behind’. The lines drawn by nativism are of an affective nature about imagined community, with meanings of belonging and voice lying at the heart of popular perceptions of just dues. This, argues Ash Amin, is the territory that progressive forces – liberal, social democratic, socialist – need to reclaim in order to shift public sentiment away from xenophobic intolerance towards one of commonality amid difference as a basis for facing existential risk and uncertainty. The book proposes a relational politics of belonging premised on the encounter, fugitive aesthetics, public interest politics, collaboration over common existential threats, and daily collectives and infrastructures of wellbeing. There is ground for progressives to mount a counter-aesthetics of belonging that will convince the discontents of neoliberal globalization that there is a better alternative to nativism.Trade Review‘Ash Amin's book has the great virtue of explaining the failure of the progressive left to make arguments for renewed democratic politics which match the visceral appeals of the populist right. Amin's solution, which promotes an aesthetic mode of resistance based on tactile and experiential images of belonging, is sure to provoke a rich debate.’Arjun Appadurai, New York UniversityTable of ContentsIntroduction 1. Manchester University Press Understanding Political Islam
Book SynopsisUnderstanding Political Islam retraces the human and intellectual development that led François Burgat to a very firm conviction: that the roots of the tensions that afflict the Western world’s relationship with the Muslim world are political rather than ideological. In his compelling account of the interactions between personal life-history and professional research trajectories, Burgat examines how the rise of political Islam has been expressed: first in the Arab world, then in its interactions with European and Western societies. An essential continuation of his work on Islamism, Burgat’s unique field research and ‘political trespassing’ marks an overdue challenge to the academic mainstream.Trade Review'An outstanding book that sheds clarity on the oft-obscure debate about Islam and politics. Alternately personal and scholarly, Burgat takes the reader through his extensive field work in the Arab Muslim world to share the conversations and revelations that have shaped his approach to the subject. He also engages head-on with the divisive debates that have poisoned the discussion of Islam’s place in the West since 9/11, not least in his native France. Engagingly written and passionately argued, Understanding Political Islam is essential reading.'Professor Eugene Rogan, Director of St Antony's College Middle East Centre, University of Oxford'Understanding Political Islam? finally makes accessible to English readers the formidable intellectual journey of the prominent French scholar, Francois Burgat, and provides the most up to date synthesis of his research that spans over four decades and multiple countries from North Africa to the Middle east.Francois Burgat is an original and unique voice who has continuously challenged the dominant assumptions on political Islam by showing for example that Islam as a religion is not the main factor of Islamism, and therefore religious reform is not the solution to the existing Islamist predicament. Building on Burgat’s longstanding fieldwork, this book provides a rich and in depth analysis of the multifaceted and evolving reality of Islamism from its origin in the 1960s to the Arab Spring and ISIS. It is a must read for students of politics and experts of the Middle east.'Professor Jocelyne Cesari, University of Birmingham and Georgetown University, author of What is Political Islam?'A magisterial statement on the study of Islamic politics by one of its most distinguished scholars, this is also a deeply personal book that summarises a career spent in North Africa and the Middle East living among and speaking to some of the region's most important political actors.'Professor Faisal Devji, Director of St Antony's College Asian Studies Centre, University of Oxford'Misunderstanding of“Political Islam” has been perhaps the greatest political trap the West hasfallen into in modern times, dragging it into endless wars, interventions, coups and attempts at regime change in the Muslim World— all failing toaccomplish anything except death and destruction. François Burgat was oneof the very first researchers to abandon high-flown theorizing about whatpolitical Islam is all about. Instead gettingdown into the mix to spend time with an array of real personalities livingunder concrete but diverse circumstances, Burgat captured earlier thanmost a feel for the realities and impulses inside Islamic movements, howeverdivergent among themselves. He has consistently argued that the issue comesdown not to exotic ideologies but to a practical struggle by Muslims to recovera place of power and dignity in the world and to establish identities washedaway under years of colonialism. Manchester University Press Collective Emotions and Political Violence:
Book SynopsisHow do collective actors move from moderate politics to (violent) extremism? Faced with high risks of repression and implosion, they need to legitimate such radical change to keep members and followers committed to collective action. Drawing on the texts, audios, and videos of five Islamist organisations in the UK and Germany in the 2000s and 2010s, the book develops a transdisciplinary theoretical framework and innovative methodological approach to explore how radical changes in activism are mediated. Clément argues that political violence has to feel right, as a collective, for an organisation and its followers to move from moderate activism to (violent) extremism. She shows that organisations mediate this change by performing collective emotions in and through narrative. The book offers a provocative and nuanced account which departs from conventional interpretations of radicalisation and reminds us of the power of emotions.Trade Review'This exciting new book offers original and powerful demonstration of the importance of shared emotions in political activism. Drawing on examples from the UK and Germany, its emphasis on political violence needing to ‘feel right’ for collectives takes debate far beyond the individualism and idealism of dominant explanatory frameworks. Clément’s book will be widely read by scholars and students in Politics, Sociology, and beyond, deservedly so! Lee Jarvis, Professor of International Politics, University of East Anglia'This outstanding contribution by Maéva Clément brings together two of the hottest topics in IR: emotions and narratives. It convincingly shows how narratives are woven by Islamist organisations in order to aid group radicalisation and legitimise extremism. The book emphasises that humans, including extremists, love storytelling.'Alexander Spencer, Chair of International Relations, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg‘Offering both conceptual depth and empirical detail, Maéva Clément shows how emotions – and in particular the emotional power of group narratives – are crucial to understanding why and how individuals and organisations move from moderate activism to violent extremism. Bristol University Press After Brexit and Other Essays
Book Synopsis‘Being more like America again and less like Europe is the heart of the UK model of capitalism … [but] there are many respects in which Britain remains unlike America despite its strong appeal to the British political class ...’ In 'After Brexit' Andrew Gamble sets out the economic models and external relationships that Britain has pursued since the Second World War and examines the choices it now faces as it adjusts to life outside of the European Union. This volume brings together this essay with some of Andrew Gamble’s most important and influential writings on British politics and political economy from the last forty years. They reflect on many of the issues that animate British politics, from the relative decline of the economy and the reshaping of the welfare state to the transformation of the Conservative and Labour parties and the changing constitutional order with the devolution of power to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The volume is introduced by the author and includes his notes on each of the essays as well as an epilogue, which considers their original context and what has changed since. Taken together, the essays in this volume are testament to the acuity of one of Britain’s foremost political thinkers and provide rich insight into debates and ideas that continue to influence British politics and Britain’s place in the world. A companion volume of Andrew Gamble’s essays, The Western Ideology and Other Essays, focusing on political ideas and ideologies, is also available from Bristol University Press.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Historical Contexts Notes on the Essays After Brexit (2019) Explanations of British Decline (1999) The European Disunion (2006) The Anglo-American World View (2019) The Free Economy and the Strong State (1979) Thatcherism and Conservative Politics (1983) Economic Growth and Political Dilemmas (1983) The Crisis of Conservatism (1995) The Thatcher Myth (2015) Theories of British Politics (1990) The Constitutional Revolution in the United Kingdom (2006) What’s British about British Politics? Book SynopsisReject our society's liberal bias against conservative women and learn how traditional principles will secure a better future for us all with this inspiring guide from a political powerhouse. The Mind of a Conservative Woman challenges women to improve their place in life and open doors for themselves and the next generation through the courage of their convictions. Avalon Publishing Group Angry White Men, 2nd Edition: American
Book SynopsisWe hear them on talk radio airwaves bellowing about minorities. We watch them organize anti-immigration demonstrations on the border. We read their opinions regarding the demise of white male privilege. And sometimes, tragically, we witness their aggression through vigilante violence, as in the cases of Wade Michael Page, James Eagan Holmes, Elliot Rodger, George Zimmerman, and many more. They are America's angry white men, including "men's rights" activists who think white men are the victims of discrimination, as well as members of the "white wing" of the rightward fringes of the American political spectrum. Why are they so angry?Sociologist Michael Kimmel, one of the leading writers on men and masculinity in the world today, has spent hundreds of hours in the company of America's angry white men in pursuit of an answer. Raised to expect unparalleled social and economic privilege, white men are suffering today from what Kimmel calls "aggrieved entitlement": a sense that those benefits that white men believed were their due have been snatched away from them. In Angry White Men, Kimmel presents a comprehensive diagnosis of their fears, anxieties, and rage.

St Augustine's Press A Socratic Introduction to Plato`s Republic
Book SynopsisThis book is designed for three classes of people: Beginners who want an introduction to philosophy; Those who have already had an introduction to philosophy and who would like to see it in action now applied to a great book written by a great philosophy, but who have never read Plato’s Republic, the most famous and influential philosophy book ever written; Those who have read Plato’s Republic before but did not understand its deepest significance. Why is Plato the best introduction to philosophy? Peter Kreeft has taught philosophy for over 50 years, including one section of a course for beginners every semester. He has tried just about everything possible, and a few new things that are impossible. He has experimented with every one of the many alternative methods available for teaching beginners. (He has A.D.D., so he easily gets bored and likes to try new things all the time.) But he has never found anything nearly as successful as Plato. Plato is the best writer in the history of philosophy. Most philosophers are dull, undramatic, abstract writers. (There are a few other exceptions besides Plato: Augustine, Pascal, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard.) But Plato wrote dramatic dialogues, in which Socrates, his famous teacher, interacts with a great variety of fools. These dialogues are like intellectual swordfights, and even though you know Socrates is going to win, they are exciting because you see his ideas come alive, like a sword in the handoff a master. Plato is a great dramatist, a great poet, and a great psychologist as well as a great philosopher. Nobody else who ever lived combined those four talents as well as Plato did. Apprenticeship to a great master is the best way to learn any art. The student will understand what philosophy is better by watching a master do it than by reading abstract definitions of it from a second-rate philosopher, or by a mere scholar. Concrete examples are always the easiest way to learn things. Plato’s dialogues are the world’s first, and still the best, concrete example of philosophizing. Kreeft introduces his students to this love affair through a great matchmaker, Plato, who is a better teacher than the student will ever meet in the land of the living. In fact, Plato still is in the land of the living. He’s still alive and kicking in his dialogues. He rubs off on those who are wise and humble enough to become a student.

The New Press The Kaepernick Effect: Taking a Knee, Changing
Book SynopsisRiveting and inspiring first-person stories of how “taking a knee” triggered a political awakening among athletes of all ages and levels, from the celebrated sportswriter “With profiles of courage that leap of the page, Zirin uncovers a whole national movement of citizen-athletes fighting for racial justice.” —Ibram X. Kendi, National Book Award–winning author of Stamped from the Beginning Hailed by Publishers Weekly in a starred review as “an enthralling look at the impact of peaceful protest by sports figures at the high school, college, and professional levels,” The Kaepernick Effect explores the story of how quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s simple act of “taking a knee” spread like wildfire throughout American society, becoming the preeminent public symbol of resistance to America’s persistent racial inequality. In this powerful book, critically acclaimed sports journalist and author Dave Zirin chronicles “the Kaepernick effect” for the first time, through “a riveting collection of first-person stories” (The Nation) from high school athletes and coaches, college stars and high-powered athletic directors, and professional athletes across many different sports—from Megan Rapinoe to Michael Bennett. From the right side of history, intent on fairness and justice, he has been warning us about the liars, thieves, hypocrites, and grifters hiding in plain sight in America’s playpen. He has an uncommon grasp of his subject matter, a sculptor’s attention to detail and a historian’s expertise, and the combination is worthy of your applause. Kaepernick’s work will echo over the years. So, too, will Zirin’s.”—Dan Le Batard “When I think about Dave Zirin’s body of work, which I do a lot, ‘honesty’ and ‘integrity’ always come first to mind. He challenges you to think, and think carefully, about any and all assumptions you might have. You hear a lot these days about the importance of ‘stepping outside your comfort zone.’ Well, Zirin has always been there to help with that. The Kaepernick Effect is a perfect marriage of author and subject.”—Jonathan Coleman, author of Long Way to Go: Black and White in America“A powerful testimonial. Lessons in civic courage leap from every page as we see these amazing athletes risk everything to change this country and help set the stage for the racial reckoning we now face. Book Synopsis“A damning investigation of dark money by a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee” (Kirkus Reviews) with a new preface on recent disclosures about efforts to influence the Court “There’s no senator I can think of who’s done more sleuthing to figure out the money trail in American politics, particularly as it affects the courts.”—Jane Mayer, author of the national bestseller Dark Money As the story of Supreme Court malfeasance and ethics violations repeatedly makes front-page news, the paperback version of The Scheme comes at a time of crisis for the American judiciary.Following his book Captured on corporate capture of regulatory and government agencies, and his years of experience as a prosecutor, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, whom Senator Elizabeth Warren calls a “a powerful voice in defending our American democracy against the relentless, pervasive—and often hidden—power of corporate special interests,” here turns his attention to the right-wing scheme to capture the United States Supreme Court. Whitehouse chronicles a hidden-money campaign using an armada of front groups, helped by the infamous Citizens United Supreme Court decision, employing the Federalist Society as an appointments turnstile, and with the same small handful of right-wing billionaires and corporations enticing the Senate to break rules, norms, and precedents to confirm wildly inappropriate nominees who would advance their anti-government agenda. Now available in an affordable paperback edition with a new preface addressing the Reverend Schenck disclosures about politicking the justices and Justice Thomas’s recently disclosed conflicts of interest, The Scheme offers what Kirkus Reviews calls “a maddening indictment of a corrupt and corrupted judiciary.”Trade ReviewPraise for The Scheme:"Chapter and verse on how the U.S. Supreme Court was ‘captured.’"—The Boston Globe“An alarming . . . account of efforts to install conservative judges on the Supreme Court and the federal judiciary. . . . Haymarket Books The Production of Subjectivity: Marx and
Book SynopsisLouis Althusser argued that Marx initiated a transformation of philosophy, a new way of doing philosophy. This book follows that provocation to examine the way in which central Marxist concepts and problems from primitive accumulation to real abstraction animate and inform philosophers from Theodor Adorno to Paolo Virno. While also examining the way in which reading Marx casts new light on such philosophers as Spinoza. At the centre of this transformation is the production of subjectivity, the manner in which relations of production produce ways of thinking and living.Table of ContentsTable of Contents: Acknowledgements Introduction Part 1 Becoming Contingent: Philosophy, Violence, History 1 Primitive Accumulation: The Aleatory Foundation of Capitalism 2 The Present as Pre-History: Adorno and Balibar on the Transformation of Labor 3 The Althusser Effect: Philosophy, History, and Temporality 4 To Think the New in the Absence of its Conditions: Althusser and Negri on the Philosophy of Primitive Accumulation Part 2 Putting the Capitalism Back into Capitalism and Schizophrenia: On Deleuze and Guattari 5 A Universal History of Contingency: Deleuze and Guattari on the History of Capitalism 6 The Age of Cynicism: Deleuze and Guattari on the Political Logic of Contemporary Capitalism 7 The Fetish is Always Actual, Revolution is Always Virtual: Marx and Deleuze 8 The Affective Economy: Producing and Consuming Affects in Deleuze and Guattari 9 Beyond Enslavement and Subjection: Deviations from Deleuze and Guattari Part 3 Between Marx and Spinoza: Philosophy and Ideology 10 The Potentia of Living Labour: Negri’s Practice of Philosophy 11 The Order and Connection of Ideas: Theoretical Practice in Macherey’s Turn to Spinoza 12 Desire is Man’s Very Essence: Spinoza and Hegel as Philosophers of Transindividuality 13 The Order and Connection of Ideology is the Same as the Order and Connection of Exploitation: Or, Towards a Bestiary of the Capitalist Imagination 14 Conscienta Sive Ideologica: On the Spontaneity of Ideology Part 4 Returns of Philosophical Anthropology: New Subjections/New Transformations 15 A Genealogy of Homo-Economicus: Foucault, Neoliberalism, and the Production of Subjectivity 16 Abstract Materialism: Alfred Sohn-Rethel and the Task of Materialist Philosophy 17 The Production of Subjectivity: From Transindividuality to the Commons 18 Man is a Werewolf to Man: Capital and the Limits of Political Anthropology 19 The ‘Other Scene’ of Political Anthropology: Between Transindividuality and Equaliberty 20 Anthropocene and Anthropogenesis: Philosophical Anthropology and the Ends of Man Bibliography Index

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Foucault with Marx
Book SynopsisWith this timely commitment, Jacques Bidet unites the theories of arguably the world's two greatest emancipatory political thinkers. In this far-reaching and decisive text, Bidet examines Marxian and Foucauldian criticisms of capitalist modernity. For Marx, the intersection between capital and the market is crucial, while for Foucault, the organizational aspects of capital are what really matter. According to Marx, the ruling class is identified with property; with Foucault, it is the managers who hold power and knowledge that rule. Bidet identifies these two sides of capitalist modernity as 'market' and 'organization', showing that each leads to specific forms of social conflict; against exploitation and austerity, over wages and pensions on the one hand, and against forms of 'medical' and work-based discipline, control of bodies and prisons on the other. Bidet's impetus and clarity however serve a greater purpose: uniting two souls of critical social theory, in order to overcome what has become an age-long separation between the 'old left' and the 'new social movements'.Trade ReviewCompetent and lucid … hold[s] out hope of reconnecting what used to be called the "new social movements" with struggles against capitalism.' * Marx and Philosophy Review of Books *Represents yet another contribution to the eventual overcoming of an academic skirmish between advocates of Foucault and Marx, itself a smaller conflict in the larger battle of postmodernism versus Marxism. * Contrivers' Review *Highly accomplished...a superb theoretical synthesis. * LSE Review of Books *In the growing literature confronting and combining the legacies of Marx and Foucault, Jacques Bidet’s contribution will stand out with exceptional relevance. It is both firmly anchored in the author’s doctrine of the “dual” nature of capitalist domination (capital as property and capital as knowledge) and full of imaginative readings of the texts. * Etienne Balibar, co-author of Reading Capital *The ongoing confrontation between Marx and Foucault is a primary theoretical issue implicit in every political struggle today, whether domestic or international. Bidet's careful and detailed staging of the intersections of these two quite different bodies of theory is an indispensable exercise. * Fredric Jameson, author of The Political Unconscious and Marxism and Form *In this important work, Jacques Bidet shows with patient and piercing insight why it is necessary to link Foucault with Marx (and Marx with Foucault) in order to make sense of the contemporary world. It will undoubtedly become an essential work for anyone seeking to think through the productive relations between the two thinkers. * Nick Srnicek, co-author of Inventing the Future: Postcapitalism and a World Without Work *Bidet creatively interrogates Marx’s critique of property and class relations and Foucault’s critique of knowledge-power relations to produce an original synthesis that informs a novel approach to resistance and struggles for counter-hegemony in the present neoliberal conjuncture. * Robert Jessop, author of The Future of the Capitalist State *Table of ContentsIntroduction: Why Unite Marx and Foucault, and How? 1. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Gaza Under Hamas: From Islamic Democracy to
Book SynopsisHamas is designated a terrorist organization by Israel, the EU, the USA and the UN. It has made itself notorious for its violent radicalism and uncompromising rejection of the Jewish state. So after its victory in the 2006 elections the world was watching. How would Hamas govern? Could an Islamist group without any experience of power - and with an unwavering ideology - manage to deal with day-to-day realities on the ground? Bjorn Brenner investigates what happened after the elections and puts the spotlight on the people over whom Hamas rules, rather than on its ideas. Lodging with Palestinian families and experiencing their daily encounters with Hamas, he offers an intimate perspective of the group as seen through local eyes. The book is based on hard-to-secure interviews with a wide range of key political and security figures in the Hamas administration, as well as with military commanders and members of the feared Qassam Brigades. Brenner has also sought out those that Hamas identifies as local trouble makers: the extreme Salafi-Jihadis and members of the now more quiescent mainstream Fatah party led by Mahmoud Abbas. The book provides a new interpretation of one of the most powerful forces in the Israel-Palestine arena, arguing that the Gazan Islamists carry a potential to be much more flexible and pragmatic than anticipated - if they would think they stand to gain from it. Gaza under Hamas investigates the key challenges to Hamas's authority and reveals why and in what ways ideology comes second to power consolidation.Trade ReviewAgainst heaps of reductionist literature and media portrayals that render Hamas as an extremist terrorist group, Bjorn Brenner provides in this book an authoritative and empirical study that debunks such Western, and mainly official, depictions of the movements. Disintersted in either vilifying or glorifying Hamas, this finely structured book is based on four years of direct field research, firsthand observations, and data collection. * Journal of Palestine Studies *What makes Brenner’s account especially valuable is its focus on how Hamas has managed to create a functioning government in Gaza – a subject that is little known – as opposed to Hamas’s behavior towards Israel, which the author explains is not discussed in this book as it has been extensively studied by others [...] This book is recommended for providing other insights into the nature of its [Hamas's] rule which, due to the author’s access to Hamas leaders and operatives, will not be found in other studies. * Perspectives on Terrorism *A useful contribution to the study of Hamas’s exercise of state power. * The Times Literary Supplement *For academic researchers, policy makers, NGOs and broader civil society members interested in Islamist experiences and practices of governance this is a must read. The book not only helps address many misconceived notions about the challenges which Hamas has faced since it was elected in 2006 but it also assists readers in nuancing the particular context in which such a case of Islamist governance actually operates. * Michelle Pace, Professor of Politics and International Studies, Department of Social Sciences and Business, Roskilde University; Honorary Professor, University of Birmingham *This is one of the rare books about Hamas that manages to be both balanced and insightful. Based on a broad range of primary sources, this in-depth study of Gaza under Hamas rule provides as full and comprehensive a picture as possible. A must-read for scholars, students, and diplomats alike! * Peter Neumann, Professor of Security Studies at the War Studies Department, King’s College London; Director of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation *Björn Brenner has contributed invaluable research through his book “Gaza under Hamas: from Islamist democracy to Islamist governance” (2017). Apart from establishing the centrality of Hamas rule to a political solution for Palestine, the book also expounds upon the spectrum of misconceptions, strengths and flaws associated with the movement. This approach provides a detailed assessment of Hamas in relation to Gaza and its unique circumstances, while dispelling mainstream manipulation, to which, as Brenner points out, academia has also contributed. * Israel Book Review *Constitutes a significant contribution to the Hamas-related literature. It departs from the conventional discussion about the group's role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and treats Hamas as an instance of Islamic governance. Moreover, the book is written in a way that renders it useful to both the specialized and the general readership. It contains information that helps one reconstruct the conditions leading to the status quo in the Gaza Strip and also provides the full picture, including the background and aftermath, of incidents that made headlines but soon fell into oblivion. * Middle East Policy *Table of ContentsPreface Foreword by Magnus Ranstorp Glossary of terms 1. Collective Ink Capitalism vs. Freedom: The Toll Road to Serfdom
Book SynopsisFor years, we’ve been taught that capitalism is good for freedom. Dominant right-wing talk radio hosts to this day recommend “libertarian” classics like Hayek’s Road to Serfdom and Friedman’s Capitalism and Freedom that claim markets free us, and this picture still dominates the schools and the political spectrum. Well get bent, one percent, because Rob Larson’s Capitalism vs. Freedom: The Toll Road to Serfdom puts big business under a microscope. This book debunks the conservative classics while demonstrating that the marketplace has its own great centers of power, which the libertarian tradition itself claims is a limit to freedom. In fact, Larson illustrates how capitalism fails both this and other concepts of human liberty, not just failing to establish a right to a share of society’s production, but also leaving us subject to the great power plays of the one percent’s corporate property.

Biteback Publishing Alternative: Towards a New Progressive Politics
Book SynopsisThe 2015 election result was a disaster for progressives in British politics, delivering a majority Conservative government at Westminster. And the outlook for the next election is not auspicious either, particularly amid the aftershocks of the momentous 2016 EU referendum result and with possible boundary changes in the offing. There is a growing recognition, however, that cross-party cooperation among the progressives could reinvigorate politics and inspire a credible alternative to the Conservatives. Those who want a good society can and must work together - and, by doing so, they can deliver better answers and more inclusive government. With contributions from a broad range of left and centre-left voices - including Sian Berry, Mhairi Black, Frances O'Grady, Tim Farron, Peter Hain, Carys Afoko, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, Zoe Williams and Neal Lawson - The Alternative sets out a base of core values around which progressives can unite, proposes a number of big policy ideas that embody those values and, crucially, explores an urgently needed new form of politics to achieve them.Trade Review"A thoughtful and original intervention at a time when creative thinking in politics is rare and desperately needed." - Rafael Behr, The Guardian; "The next big topic that everyone who wants a better government must embrace." - Paddy Ashdown, former Liberal Democrat leader; "A welcome shot of optimism in difficult times." - Shami Chakrabarti

Skillfully combining theoretical analysis with a myriad of empirical references from numerous historical and geographical contexts he offers a critical reading of the existing literature on populism, demonstrating its dependency on the theorists of "mass psychology" such as Taine and Freud. He demonstrates the relation of populism to democracy and to the logic of representation, and differentiates his approach from the work of Zizek, Hardt and Negri, and Ranciere. This book is essential reading for all those interested in the question of political identities in a world marked by figures such as Trump, Farage, Le Pen as well as Sanders, Iglesias and Mélenchon.Trade ReviewWhat needs to be politically articulated at the present time is the possibility of a leftist populism. This is what makes Laclau's long-awaited book so important. Arguably, populism has always been the governing concept in Laclau's work and in On Populist Reason, he lays out his position with great power and analytical clarity. -- Simon CritchleyLaclau played a key role in reformulating Marxist theory in the light of the collapse of communism and failure of social democracy. -- Robin Blackburn * Guardian *

Collective Ink For a Ruthless Critique of All that Exists:
Book SynopsisFor a Ruthless Critique of All that Exists takes as its point of departure two profound and interrelated phenomena. The first is the pervasive sense of what Mark Fisher had called “capitalist realism", in which (to cite the famous expression variously attributed to Fredric Jameson and Slavoj Žižek) it is easier to imagine the end of the world than then end of capitalism. As Jameson in particular has noted, “perhaps this is due to some weakness in our imaginations,” and the attenuation of the imaginative function in cultural criticism has far-reaching implications for the organization and reformation of institutions more generally. This manifests itself as a waning of speculative or theoretical energy, which in turn leads to a general capitulation to the tyranny of “what is,” the actually existing state of affairs, and the preemptive disavowal of alternative possibilities. Connected to this is the second phenomenon: the prevalent tendency in literary and cultural criticism over the past 30 or more years to eschew critical theory and even critique itself, while championing approaches to cultural study that emphasize surface reading, thin description, ordinary language philosophy, object-oriented ontology, and post-critique. Together these forms of anticritical and antitheoretical criticism have constituted a tendency that has in its various incarnations come to dominate the humanities and other areas of higher education in recent years. The latter has served to reinforce the former, and the result has been to align literary and cultural criticism with the broad-based forces of neoliberalism whose influence has so deleteriously transformed not only higher education but the whole of society at large. Robert T. Tally Jr. argues that, in order to counter these trends and empower the imagination, the time is ripe for “a ruthless critique of all that exists,” to borrow a phrase from the young Marx. This book is intended as a provocation, at once a polemic and a call to action for cultural critics.

Book Synopsis''Stimulating and provocative'' The TimesThe once-dominant philosophy of the West, defined by free expression, equal treatment of individuals, national solidarity and scientific rationality, is under threat. Cultural socialism' which advocates harsh restrictions on free speech, due process and national symbols in order to reduce psychological harm and bolster the esteem of formerly marginalized groups is on the rise.Rather than focusing on Marxist revolutionaries or equality law, Eric Kaufmann concentrates on well-meaning left-liberals. He argues that the genesis of woke' cultural socialism emerged from liberal taboos around race that arose in the 1960s and came to be weaponised and extended to other areas, such as gender. Using extensive survey data, he shows that this process is driven mainly by values, not fear, and is only going to accelerate as culturally leftist generations enter the workforce and electorate. Its rise suppresses the open debate that makes effective policy-making possible, harming the minorities cultural socialists purport to help. Only if we shift from encouraging minority fragility to building minority resilience, using state power to check institutional illiberalism, can we resist cultural socialism and restore cultural flourishing. This is the authoritative study of the radical shift in values that has turbo-charged the culture wars of our time. No-one concerned with the cultural and political conflicts of our times can afford to miss it.
