Book SynopsisAn immersive, beautifully illustrated revelation of Henry David Thoreau’s final project—a monthly almanac of natural phenomena. In the last years of his life, Henry David Thoreau created something new. Part blueprint for a major new work, part scientific chart, and part re-envisioning of the way we experience the passage of time, Thoreau’s Kalendar was more a tool than a text. Comprised of six multipage charts of “general phenomena,” the Kalendar was an instrument for recording not just natural and weather-related phenomena, but also the hidden relations among them—between the skies of one June and the skies of past and future Junes—relations we often feel but can’t quite hold, rooted as we typically are in our own brief moment of linear time. Combining reproductions of Thoreau’s hand-drawn charts with transcriptions of the Kalendar’s text and essays by acclaimed poet and scholar Kristen Case, this gorgeously crafted volume illuminates the final project of one of America’s most treasured writers and naturalists and offers a timeless, transformative vision of how to live harmoniously with the living world around us.

Monthly Review Press,U.S. Harbors Rich with Ships: The Selected
Book SynopsisA bold new collection of the writings of Miroslav Krleza, in English for the first time Miroslav Krleza was a giant of Yugoslav literature, yet remarkably little of his writing has appeared in English. In a body of work that spans more than five dozen books, including novels, short stories, plays, poetry, and essays, Krleza steadfastly pursued a radical humanism and artistic integrity. Harbors Rich in Ships gives English-speaking readers an unprecedented opportunity to appreciate the astonishing breadth of Krleza's literary creations. Beautifully translated by Zeljko Cipris, this collection of seven representative early texts introduces a new audience to three stories from Krleza's renowned antimilitarist book, The Croatian God Mars; an autobiographical sketch; a one-act play; a story from his collection of short stories; One Thousand and One Deaths; and his signature drama, The Glembays, a satirical account of the crime-ridden origins of one of Zageb's most aristocratic families. Born in 1893 Zagreb, then a city in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Miroslav Krleza died in 1981 Zagreb, after it had become part of Croatia, a republic in socialist Yugoslavia. He was educated in military academies that served the Hapsburg monarchy, however, after fighting on the Eastern Front during the First World War, he was sickened by the War's lethal nationalism and became a fervent anti-militarist. Krleza joined the Communist Party of Yugoslavia in 1918, but his opposition to Stalin's artistic dictum of social realism, as well as his refusal to support Stalin's purges, led to his expulsion from the Party in 1939. He nevertheless helped found several literary and political journals, and became a driving force in Yugoslavia's literature. This collection will help readers of all interests and ages see just why Krleza is considered among the best of the literary moderns.Trade ReviewKrleza was and shall remain a pivotal figure, and no one interested in twentieth-century Croatian and South Slavic literature can ignore him. He fully deserves to be ranked among the luminaries of contemporary world literature.-Ante Kadic, Professor Emeritus, Indiana University, Russian and East European Institute

Featuring the work of key scholars, The Bloomsbury Companion to Anarchism will be an essential tool for both the scholar and the activist.Trade ReviewThe Continuum Companion to Anarchism...attempts something much more ambitious than a basic overview of anarchist theory, offering instead a comprehensive guide to the current state of contemporary anarchist studies...It is indispensable. -- Matthew S. Lexington Books Constitutionalism and Liberty
Book SynopsisConstitutionalism and Liberty: Essays in Honor of David K. Nichols explores the relationship between liberty and constitutionalism in American politics and political theory, and is organized around the question of how human liberty is preserved and advanced while empowering government to have the necessary authority to effectively govern society. The essays themselves are divided into three areas reflecting the breadth and diversity of David K. Nichols?s scholarship. The first assesses how we should understand separation of powers and checks and balances in the American constitutional system. The second area treats different aspects of American legal practice and jurisprudence, including the powers and role of the American judiciary philosophically and institutionally as well as questions of administrative power, civil rights, parental rights, and symbolic speech. The final section examines a range of issues in political philosophy and theory, including two chapters on the intersection of political theory with literature and art. The array of subjects covered by these chapters is a testament to the broad influence of Nichols? teaching and scholarship, and to the widening interest in aspects of American politics, constitutional law, and political theory that cross traditional barriers in political science.

Academica Press Enemies of the Innocent
Book SynopsisThe real "enemies of the innocent" – the vulnerable in society – are the visionaries: those intellectuals, idealists, philosophers, and social engineers who aim to destroy traditional values under the guise of an ideological social justice theory. Nils Haug's penetrating new book explores these critical challenges to our society with its established way of life. Long-standing political, legal, and cultural arrangements, with the essential freedoms inherent in the democratic political order, are under lethal threat. Yet, the core conflict is between Judeo-Christianity and heretical secular humanist, new age, neo-pagan ideologies, with focus on the deep issues of truth, personal identity, meaning, and purpose of life. These heresies are not new, originating in ancient times, but arising again to cause much discord in our culture.Trade ReviewA critical insight into malignant ideals devastating Western civilization"" - Peter Titlestad, Professor Emeritus of English Literature, University of Pretoria""A perturbing but necessary exploration of primary human values struggling for survival"" - Henk Stoker, Professor of Apologetics & Ethics, North-West University""The harmful effects of complex ideological forces threatening the legal and ethical order of society are revealed in this compelling study"" - Hilton Staniland, Professor of Law, Queen Mary University
