Springer Verlag, Singapore Reforming State-Owned Enterprises in Asia:
Book SynopsisThis book analyzes state-owned enterprises (SOEs), which are still significant players in many Asian economies. They provide essential public services, build and operate key infrastructure, and are often reservoirs of public employment. Their characteristics and inherent competitive advantages as publicly owned enterprises allow them to play these critical roles. Their weaknesses in governance and inefficiencies in incentive structures, however, also often lead to poor performance. SOEs must be efficient, transparent, and accountable to level the playing field for private companies, secure the growth of a vibrant private sector, and achieve sustained and inclusive economic growth. This book analyzes the reform of SOEs in Asia, the results of which are mixed. The volume concludes that some key conditions generally need to be met for SOE reforms to be successful: national bureaucracies must have the capacity to implement the reforms, and adverse impacts on international trade and investment must be avoided.Table of ContentsSection 1: Corporate Governance, Strategy and the Legal framework Chapter 1: Strategy, Independence, and Governance of State-owned Enterprises in Asia Henrique Schneider Chapter 2: Enhancing the Transparency and Accountability of State-Owned Enterprises Chung-a Park and Hans Christiansen Chapter 3: Regulatory Frameworks for Reforms of State-Owned Enterprises in Thailand and Malaysia Pornchai Wisuttisak and Nasarudin Bin Abdul Rahman Chapter 4: Reforming State-owned Enterprises in Asia: Lessons from Competition Law and Policy in India Vijay Kumar Singh Chapter 5: State-owned Enterprises in Uzbekistan: Taking Stock and Some Reform Priorities Umidjon Abdullaev Section 2: Privatization: Challenges and Solutions Chapter 6: The Effects of Privatization and Corporate Governance of SOEs in Transition Economy: Case of Kazakhstan Keun Jung Lee Chapter 7: The Privatization of Japan Railway and Japan Post: Why, How, and Now Chul Ju Kim and Michael C. Springer Verlag, Singapore Contract Farming, Capital and State:
Book SynopsisThe book argues that an increasing corporatisation of agriculture in India that is enabled by its neoliberal State, in the name of ‘development’, is contributing towards deepening of inequality in the rural India. It says that Contract Farming (CF) acts as a conduit that enables the coming together of myriad production relations (mercantile, finance, productive) to sell agri-commodities to the capitalist peasant. It is an accumulation strategy that brings together various factions of domestic and foreign capital together. It shows that CF as an accumulation strategy is enabled by an active interventionist state and this neoliberal Indian state mediates the relation between the agri-capital and Indian peasantry. The book further analyzes contract farming as a part of the totality of the capitalist mode of production in context of developing countries with a large agrarian base--- asking three fundamental questions – what is CF, how and why is it done and what are the implications of it.Table of Contents1: Introduction and Rethinking Contract Farming.- 2: Punjab: An Interesting place to study Agrarian Change .- 3: Understanding the Social Relations of Contract Farming .- 4: Stating the (not so) obvious: The ‘Interventionist Neoliberal State’ in India.- 5: Understanding CF: CF as a strategy to enable dispossession-free accumulation strategy.- 6:Implications of CF 01: Technology Rhetoric in Contract Farming.- 7: Implications 02: Social Effects of Contract Farming.- 8: Conclusion: Are the Global Agri-Corporates saving the Third World Peasantry?.

Springer Verlag, Singapore State on Board!: Navigating Corporate Governance
Book SynopsisResearch in this book focuses on the strategic behaviour of the State as a shareholder in businesses, and the implications it has for the other shareholder(s) and business performance. It investigates the institutional characteristics of State-linked and State-owned firms (SIEs & SOEs), in emerging markets using Vietnam as a case study with comparative analysis on China and selected ASEAN countries. In doing so, the book adopts an evidence-based approach to explain the State’s role as a shareholder in the different aspects of corporate governance, including CEO appointment, board structure and impact of State ownership on business strategy and performance. It highlights the influence of the State as a shareholder by investigating institutional factors consistent with “path dependence” theory, which postulates that the initial and underlying structure of an economy influences its performance. In addition, the book presents empirical evidence of the dynamics of corporate governance arising from interactions between the State and other shareholders, which has not yet been addressed in the literature, and is distinctive in providing new insights from both qualitative and empirical research on how to successfully navigate the emerging market business environments from the perspective of the State as an “owner-participant”. Explaining the theoretical constructs in corporate governance in State-invested firms, empirical research methodologies, and results to draw and validate inferences, the book is comprehensive and provides a practical guide for practitioners as well as a reference for academics, undergraduate and postgraduate students. The new theoretical models proposed integrate traditional political-economic and agency theories, which also underpin tertiary business courses and academic research. Springer Verlag, Singapore The Classical Liberal Case for Israel
Book SynopsisThis book offers a unique perspective on the State of Israel based on classical liberalism, both on a historical and theoretical level. Specifically, it makes a classical liberal and libertarian analysis based upon homesteading and private property rights to defend the State of Israel. As such, this work explores the history of the Jewish State, both to provide a positive case for its right to exist, and to clarify the myths surrounding its origin and development. At the same time, it deals with other relevant related subjects, such as the complex situation between Israel and the Palestinian Arabs, the military campaigns against the Jewish State, the connection between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism, and Israel’s economic miracle. The thorough analysis presented in this work intends to show not only why the voices and movements against Israel are wrong (including the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, BDS), but more importantly, why Israel is an example of human flourishing and freedom that every advocate for liberty should celebrate. The Classical Liberal Case for Israel makes the practical and moral case for Israel. It is based on truths and facts that need to be repeated over and over. Block & Futerman understand that the only way to defeat a big lie is with a big truth. Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of the State of Israel, Jerusalem, Israel Classical Liberalism, often associated with the spread West from Northern Europe in creating free nations, is argued here as applying to Israel, with ancient roots in the principles of human freedom. Argyros Endowed Chair in Finance and Economics, Professor of Economics and Law, Smith Institute for Political Economy and Philosophy, at Chapman University. Trade Review“Walter Block and Alan Futerman’s book is a valuable introduction to the problems between the Israelis and the Palestinians, especially when presented with more liberal or pro-Palestinian treatments. I appreciate the quantitative rigor with which the authors backed up their claims. This book helped me delve into previously unexplored areas. I am grateful. It should be required reading for college students worldwide, especially the professors and administrators.” (Milton, The Times of Israel, timesofisrael.com, November 29, 2023)Table of ContentsCommentary by Benjamin Netanyahu.- Introduction.- Chapter 1. Springer Verlag, Singapore Monetary Policies in the Age of Uncertainty
Book SynopsisThis book provides an interesting review of Japanese monetary policies after the bubble economy. The Bank of Japan was the first central bank in advanced economies to implement the unconventional monetary policies during the period. After the Lehman shock, most advanced economies also carried out similar monetary policies to boost their own economies. The Japanese experience in the 1990s and 2000s no doubt played a key role during the period. Although various aspects of the experiences have been examined, not many books have been published based on intensive discussions between the macro and monetary theorists who have been active in academics and the practitioners who have actually been involved in monetary policy. This small but important book has focused on the Japanese experience. Evaluation of that experience found that three solid pillars are of crucial importance: theory, institution, and experience. Those form the basis of the book, without theory, no policies will be formulated and implemented, and implementation depends crucially on institution. Chapter 1 provides a clear theoretical background for the unconventional monetary policies and inflation targeting. Chapter 2 intensively explores the meaning and desirability of the independence of central banks. Chapter 3 reviews the consequences of the Japanese monetary policies in recent decades in comparison with those in other advanced economies.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Effects of Unconventional Monetary Policy and Inflation Target.- Chapter 2 Central Bank Independence under Changing Environment.- Chapter 3 Japanese Experiences in International Comparison.- Afterword.

Springer Verlag, Singapore New Frontiers of Policy Evaluation in Regional
Book SynopsisThis book is especially valuable for its policy evaluation studies using both a theoretical model for policies carried out at national and regional levels and for gathering policy evaluation studies in diverse disciplines by empirical study.Policy analysis shown here employs theoretical models such as an international trade model, an optimal tariff, and spatial reorganization. At the same time, factors in well-being are taken into consideration with land development, changes in migration and local economies by natural disasters, validation of efficiency for emission control methods, the relationship between cyberspace and physical space in urban networks, and NPOs’ investment activities. The empirical research reported in this volume analyzes Japan, China, and Asian-Pacific cities. In the case of Japan, studies focus on the finances of local governments, the real estate industry, the role of consumer cooperatives in a food system, and agriculture and its productivity in hilly and mountainous areas. As well, the effects of industrial clusters in megacities and investment in high-speed railways and prediction of human behavior during an earthquake are studied. In China’s case, studies focus on food policy and the effect of ecology and environment on migration policy. For Asia-Pacific cities, studies show performance rankings of “super cities” in the region. The book defines the frontier of policy evaluation following a middle path between theoretical study and empirical study with regard to evaluation. In addition, the book contributes to an understanding of the relationship between the goals and targets of sustainable development. This book is highly recommended for graduate students, policymakers, and researchers concerned with policy evaluation.Table of ContentsTable of Contents Preface Section 1: Chapter 1 Trade, capital accumulation, and wage differentials: A dynamic model of the comparative advantage theory.- Chapter 2 Ex-post Risk Management of Environmental Contamination of Municipal Water.- Chapter 3 Endogenizing the Reservation Value in Models of Land Development over Time and Under Uncertainty Revisited.- Chapter 4 Illegal Dumping of Industrial Garbage and an Optimal Tax System.- Chapter 5 Natural Disasters, Disaster Recovery Policies, and Regional Economy.- Chapter 6 An investigation of hierarchical central place systems and optimal spatial structures for improving regional welfare.- Chapter 7 Agglomeration and dispersion mechanism of cities system with interior structure.- Chapter 8 Emission Standards versus Emission Taxes with Foreign Firms.- Chapter 9 Budget Deficits of the Central Government and the Decentralization of Local Governments Section 2: Chapter 10 Socio-Economic Factors Affecting the Innovativeness of Start-ups in Japan: Comparative Analysis between Social Enterprises and Commercial Enterprises.- Chapter 11 Multi-agent Simulation for Prediction of Human Behavior during a Hypothetical Earthquake.- Chapter 12 Dynamic Changes in Food Consumption in China: Focusing on the Rice Retail Market.- Chapter 13 Ecological migration policy and livestock farm management.- Chapter 14 Assessment of Policies on Environmental Impacts of Socioeconomic Activities: A Case Study of Kasumigaura Basin, Japan.- Chapter 15 Industrial Agglomeration Due to High-Speed Railway Investment: A Monopolistic Competition Model Impact Assessment.- Chapter 16 Performance Rankings of Asia-Pacific Super Cities by means of Data Envelopment Analysis.- Chapter 17 Econometric Analysis of Economic Growth and Internal Population Migration Based on Three Regions of China.- Chapter 18 Output and Profit Effects of Backward Integration through Joint Projects: A Successive Cournot Oligopoly Model of the Real Estate Industry.- Chapter 19 Analysis of Regional Agricultural Productivity Growth Using the Malmquist Productivity Index: The Case of Chugoku, Japan Section 1: Chapter 1. Springer Verlag, Singapore Regional Development Planning and Practice:
Book SynopsisThis book, through a bunch of systematic and analytical notes and scientific commentaries, acquaints the readers with the innovative methods of regional development, measurement of the development in regional scale, regional development models, and policy prescriptions. Conceptualizing development as a regional process is a geographer's brainchild, and the sense of region has long been rooted deeply in the fundamental research practices that geographers are accustomed to. The geographical perspective of regions entails conceptualizing them nested horizontally as the formal region and hierarchical relationships in space with spatial flows or interactions as the functional region. In geographical research, the region works as a tool by serving as a statistical unit of analysis. More importantly, however, regions serve as the fundamental spatial units of management and planning by specifying a territory or a part of it for which a certain spatial development or regulatory plan is sought. This book addresses the complex processes in different regions of the world, particularly South Asia, to perceive the regional development planning involved and the sustainable management practiced there. The book is a useful resource for socio-economic planners, policymakers, and policy researchers. Springer Verlag, Singapore Periphery and Small Ones Matter: Interplay of
Book SynopsisThis open access book analyzes the dualism and inequality in Indonesia insofar as how it affects micro, Small & Medium enterprises. The author considers how the general direction of policy should be to mitigate the effects of agglomeration forces leading towards concentration of activities in developed areas, and exploit the same forces by encouraging small businesses to operate in a close proximity and enable them to enjoy the external economies. If serious efforts to foster inclusive growth are to be made, conducting these two tasks should be the focus of social planners. The question is, how? The book addresses this question by focusing on the role of interactions between policies and institutions, of which social capital is an important part. Table of Contents1. Introduction.- 2. Book SynopsisThis edited book is written by six authors from Asia and Africa. The individual authors focus on their own country's case or cases that they have been working on. The book features local conflicts in six countries in Asia and Africa and identifies how the local conflicts are affected by the forces of globalization. Cases include Nigeria's oil-related conflicts, the Democratic Republic of Congo's timber conflicts, continuing instability in Mozanbique, Thailand's conflict with regard to AIDS medicine, Myanmar's local conflicts after its reforms, and the Afghanistan’s conflicts over minerals. From these diverse case studies, the book examines how globalization and international politics affect local politics and conflicts, and vice versa. Even seemingly internal conflicts are shown to be significantly influenced by globalization forces and to create new dynamism in local politics. While there are other books that explore globalization and conflicts, many of them are conceptually organized with a small number of case studies. The present volume examines local conflicts in relation to globalization and demonstrates how structural inequality vis-a-vis weak stateness and statehood are significantly affected by global political economy.Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisThis book explores the establishment process, mechanism design, and role orientation of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) under the new background of global economic governance. After the international financial crisis in 2008, the process of economic globalization and the comparison of international forces have presented a new situation, and the global economic governance system since has entered a period of deep adjustment and transformation. At the same time, the problems and drawbacks of the original multilateral development financial system have become increasingly prominent. This not only provides a historical opportunity for the establishment of the AIIB, but also gives it a new important role in the global multilateral development financial system. The innovation of the AIIB’s governance model, such as organizational structure, equity, and voting rights allocation, makes it more efficient in operation. And in practice, it is playing an increasingly important role in promoting policy connectivity, infrastructure connectivity, trade connectivity, financial connectivity and people-to-people connectivity of Asian region.Table of ContentsPreface.- Foreword.- Chapter 1 Global Economic Governance in an Era of Transformation.- Chapter 2 Realistic Needs: Development Financial System Calls for New Members.- Chapter 3 The Creation of AIIB: Preparation and Operation.- Chapter 4 Mechanism Design: Governance Structure and Rules of AIIB.- Chapter 5 Vision and Mission: AIIB and Regional Connectivity.- Annex I: Articles of Agreement of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.- Annex II Members, Subscriptions and Voting Power of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.- References.- Postscript.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Legitimacy of China’s Counter-Terrorism Approach:
Book SynopsisThis book examines how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has sought to legitimise its counter-terrorism strategy in the eyes of its domestic and international audiences. An important element of CCP policy in Xinjiang has been the deployment of ordinary Chinese citizens, or the 'mass line,’ to create new realities on the ground. This book explores how the history of ideological struggle in the PRC has taken on new characteristics, as well as offering insight into how the CCP has maintained legitimacy in the eyes of its population, even as it pursues policies which are internationally controversial, shedding light on the past and future of the behaviour of the Chinese state, a subject of interest to China scholars, scholars of the Belt and Road, and counter-terrorism experts.Trade Review“Legitimacy of China’s Counter-Terrorism Approach remains a noteworthy contribution to the field. It is concisely written and contains both insight and provocative arguments relevant to not only specialists in Xinjiang and Uyghur studies but also those with an interest in Chinese security policy and terrorism and counter-terrorism studies.” (Michael Clarke, The China Quarterly, July 31, 2023)Table of ContentsTablesFiguresAcknowledgementDisclaimerChapter 1 IntroductionThe PuzzleTerrorismTerrorism threats in XinjiangTerrorism ResearchChinaMass LineA Note on Sources and MethodologyChapter OutlineChapter 2 From ‘Class Enemies’ to ‘Three Forces’Hostile ForcesMao Era: Peaceful Evolution and Two Types of ContradictionsDeng Era: Peaceful Development and Bourgeois LiberalisationJiang and Hu Era: Submerged Friend/Enemy TensionsXi Era: Revival of the Mass LineConclusionChapter 3 The Mass Line Ethos and People’s War on TerrorFengqiao ExperienceCommunity Policing‘Re-centralisation’ of security policy under Xi JinpingPeople’s War on Terror‘Hard’ and ‘soft’ approachesConclusionChapter 4 Mass Mobilisation Tactics for Countering TerrorismCo-optation of Local ActorsPatriotic believersCultural workersGrassroots propagandistsPopularisation of the state narrativesBetween Education and PropagandaConclusionChapter 5 Conclusion

Springer Verlag, Singapore Utilization of Geospatial Information in Daily
Book SynopsisThis book focuses on geospatial information in living spaces, providing many examples of its collection and use as well as discussing the problems of how it is used and its future prospects.Geospatial information science is in the process of evolving and being systematized, with the technical and usage aspects of the real world stimulating each other. This book systematizes the technical aspects of positioning; of geography, which manages and represents what is measured in units of earth coordinates; and of data science, which aims to efficiently express and process geographic information, all by introducing contemporary examples that are systematized with regard to their use in our living spaces. Examples of geospatial information used in almost all aspects of our lives, including urban areas, transportation, disaster prevention, health and medical care, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, culture, ecology, and topography, are presented, along with examples of their use in each area. One of the major features of this book is that it describes the use of data from earthquake disasters that is unique to Japan, as well as the use of open data and personal data in Japan, which is a trend that is gaining attention in many countries. In this way the book systematically describes events and circumstances in living spaces that are revealed by the expression and analysis of geospatial data, with case studies and discusses their use in the IoT era.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Institute for Southeast Asian Studies Living Next to the Giant: The Political Economy of Vietnam's Relations with China under Doi Moi
Book SynopsisThis book examines how the interaction between political and economic factors under Doi Moi has shaped Vietnam's China policy and bilateral relations since the late 1980s. After providing a historical background, the book examines the conflicting effects that Doi Moi has generated on bilateral relations. It demonstrates that Vietnam's economic considerations following the adoption of Doi Moi contributed decidedly to the Sino-Vietnamese normalization in 1991 as well as the continuous improvements in bilateral ties ever since. At the same time, Vietnam's economic activities in the South China Sea and China's responses have intensified bilateral rivalry and put their ties under considerable strains. The book goes on to argue that Doi Moi has indeed brought Vietnam newfound opportunities to develop a multi-level omni-directional hedging strategy against China. Finally, the book concludes by looking at the prospects of democratization in both countries and assessing the future trajectory of their relations under such circumstances. As the most comprehensive and up-to-date survey of Vietnam's relations with China over the past thirty years, the book is a useful reference source for academics, policymakers, students, and anyone interested in contemporary Vietnam foreign policy in general and Vietnam–China relations in particular.

ISEAS The Dragon's Underbelly: Dynamics and Dilemmas in
Book SynopsisThis book shows why Vietnam has not become the dragon it is often touted to be. The team of authors include both long-time observers and junior scholars who present cutting-edge research on the latest trends as well as major challenges facing the country's economy and political system. As Vietnam seeks to escape from poverty and the legacies of mistaken socialist policies, its economy has become fully integrated into the global economy. Yet, without an effective and far-sighted leadership, it is still occupying a low position in the global value chains and becoming increasingly dependent on China. Politically, after three decades of reform, the Vietnamese Communist Party's grip on power has well adapted to the market economy, but is confronting deep vulnerabilities as observed in its eroding ability to control workers, the media, public universities, and state-owned enterprises. The book also includes a section that applies formal and statistical methods to compare Vietnam with China in two critical areas of political accountability and anti-corruption policy.

NUS Press The Business of Politics and Ethnicity: A History
Book SynopsisFounded in 1906, the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry is a leading cultural and economic organization dedicated to promoting the interests of the Chinese business community. The first extended history of the Chamber, Sikko Visscher's ""The Business of Politics and Ethnicity"" describes its changing relationship with the state and with businesses in the region. Some of the wealthiest and most influential businessmen in Singapore and Malaysia have served as leaders of the Chamber. Drawing on archival materials and extensive interviews, Visscher provides lively biographical sketches to illustrate the circumstances and personal values that propelled these and other leading Chinese businessmen to success and to prominence. He also examines Chinese business practices, considering cultural elements as well as state and market forces, and highlights unique features of the Chinese experience in Singapore. By viewing Singapore from the perspective of a well established non-governmental organization as it struggled, negotiated, and cooperated with the state, this book offers an alternative to conventional political histories.

NUS Press Law, Institutions and Malaysian Economic
Book SynopsisThis pioneering volume develops an institutionalist analysis of Malaysia's post-colonial economy by exploring the political economy of development and particularly the interface between economics and law. The various authors show that economic policy initiatives in Malaysia have often been accompanied by corresponding legislative and regulatory reforms intended to create an appropriate legal environment, and that economic problems or crises arising from earlier policies have led to major legislative innovations. The volume begins with a survey of Malaysia's colonial legal heritage and significant postcolonial developments, and the relationship between economic change, institutional developments and the law. Colonial land law transformed the rural Malay population, and the authors show that the routine depiction of this sector of the economy as a 'traditional' relic of the pre-colonial era is misleading. With regard to industry, the government changed course after independence, promoting manufacturing investments and technological progress, and forging new industrial relations between the state and trade unions. Drawing on this background the book rejects claims that corporate governance failures caused the financial crisis of the 1990s, and criticizes claims for the superiority of Anglo-American arrangements for corporate governance.

Oxford University Press (UK) Exorbitant Privilege
Book SynopsisFor more than half a century, the dollar has been not just America''s currency but the world''s. It is used globally by importers, exporters, investors, governments and central banks alike. This singular role of the dollar is a source of strength for the United States. It is, as a critic of U.S. policies once put it, America''s exorbitant privilege. But now, with U.S. budget deficits extending as far as the eye can see, holding dollars is viewed as a losing proposition. Some say that the dollar may soon cease to be the world''s standard currency, which would depress U.S. living standards and weaken the country''s international influence. In Exorbitant Privilege, one of our foremost economists, Barry Eichengreen, traces the rise of the dollar to international prominence. He shows how the greenback dominated internationally in the second half of the 20th century for the same reasons that the United States dominated the global economy. But now, with the rise of China, India, Brazil and othTrade ReviewA brisk and invigorating account of a century of international monetary developments ... extremely well informed, cogently argued...erudite and readable. * Andrea Boltho, New Left Review *incredibly relevant work * Business Destinations *Short and eminently readable...In just 177 pages of text, [Eichengreen] provides a wealth of material for both the lay reader and the scholar...You can't do better than Eichengreen for a solid read on the dollar's wild ride. * American Prospect *A truly superb book on the role and global standing of the dollar--past, present and future. Oxford University Press The Politics of the New Welfare State
Book SynopsisSince the early 1990s, European welfare states have undergone substantial changes, in terms of objectives, areas of intervention, and instruments. Traditional programmes, such as old age pensions have been curtailed throughout the continent, while new functions have been taken up. At present, welfare states are expected to help non-working people back into employment, to complement work income for the working poor, to reconcile work and family life, to promote gender equality, to support child development, and to provide social services for an ageing society. The welfare settlement that is emerging at the beginning of the 21st century is nonetheless very different in terms of functions and instruments from the one inherited from the last century. This book seeks to offer a better understanding of the new welfare settlement, and to analyze the factors that have shaped the recent transformation.Table of ContentsList of Figures ; List of Tables ; List of Contributors ; Introduction ; The Politics of the 'New' Welfare States: Analysing Reforms in Western Europe ; PART I: PERSPECTIVES ON THE NEW WELFARE STATE ; 2. Oxford University Press, USA Achieving Development Success
Book SynopsisThis book presents development strategies and lessons based on a large range of ''success'' countries across the developing world. In addition to the country cases, it presents regional and overall syntheses that cover orthodox vs. heterodox policies; the importance of capability, primary exports, diversification and financing; managing diversity; the role of institutions and governance; and human development. The book reveals much diversity in successful development strategies offered by the various select countries: for example, the ''disinterested-government'' political economy of China; the democratically supported, high-service-sector development approach of India; the ''Washington-Consensus-based'' reforms of Ghana and China; the diversification strategies of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Oman; the dynamic orthodox-heterodox strategy of Malaysia and Vietnam; the effective natural-resource management of Botswana, Oman, Bahrain and the UAE; the social-sector underpinniTrade ReviewThis valuable collection of studies is full of new insights. It confirms that a deep understanding of economic history really matters for policy makers in developing countries. * Nicholas Crafts, Professor of Economic History, Warwick University *Comparative analysis of development successes based on country case studies is a useful complement to statistical cross-country regressions. While they have no claim at establishing causality, they give us a richness of detail that reliably suggests policy approaches to success. The 21 case studies from all five continents presented in this book show that success can be achieved, that there are many ways of engineering success, but that good governance and market forces play key complementary roles. While we have a good understanding of how markets work, knowing how to make developing country governments assume developmental functions is one of the greatest challenges to the development profession. This book makes an important contribution in that direction that will be of great assistance to both scholars and policy makers. * Elisabeth Sadoulet, Professor, Agricultural & Resource Economics, University of California at Berkeley *Nations are not destined to fail, however most fail to be successful. The case studies in this book provide both aspiration and insights on how to guide a nation away from failure towards success. This book will become an essential reading for scholars and for policy makers in developing countries, international development community, and in developed countries as well. * Justin Yifu Lin, Professor and Honorary Dean, National School of Development, Peking University and Former Chief Economist, World Bank *Table of ContentsPART I: EAST ASIA AND THE PACIFIC (SOUTH KOREA, MALAYSIA, THAILAND, AND VIETNAM); PART II: THE EMERGING ASIAN GIANTS (INDIA AND CHINA); PART III: SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA (BOTSWANA, MAURITIUS, SOUTH AFRICA, AND GHANA?; PART IV: LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN (BRAZIL, CHILE, COSTA RICA, AND THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC); PART V: MIDDLE-EAST AND NORTH AFRICA (OMAN, BAHRAIN, TUNISIA, AND THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES)
