Taylor & Francis Modern Monetary Theory and European Macroeconomics
This book provides a new methodological approach to money and macroeconomics. Realizing that the abstract equilibrium models lacked descriptions of fundamental issues of a modern monetary economy, the focus of this book lies on the (stylized) balance sheets of the main actors. Money, after all, is born on the balance sheets of the central bank or commercial bank. While households and firms hold accounts at banks with deposits, banks hold an account at the central bank where deposits are called reserves. The book aims to explain how the two monetary circuits â central bank deposits and bank deposits â are intertwined. It is also shown how government spending injects money into the economy.Modern Monetary Theory and European Macroeconomics covers both the general case and then the Eurozone specifically. A very simple macroeconomic model follows which explains the major accounting identities of macroeconomics. Using this new methodology, the Eurozone crisis is examined from a fr

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Origins and Evolution of Consumer Capitalism
Book SynopsisConsumer capitalism arose with the second industrial revolution, the application of continuous-mass production to consumer goods during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This book adopts a Veblenian, Keynesian viewpoint, presenting an evolutionary view of consumption combined with the need to increase demand to match increases in production. The book traces the history of consumer capitalism, examining the paradox posed by applying continuous-mass production to produce armaments for dynastic ambitions versus consumer goods for the masses, manifesting itself in the world wars of the twentieth century. Multiple paradoxes at the heart of the story address booms leading to busts, over-producing countries in Asia relying on over-consuming countries in the West, and the expansion of demand depending on increasingly inventive ways of liquefying assets, in light of stagnant incomes. The book persuasively argues that these paradoxes result from capitalism's incessant drive tTrade Review"John P. Watkins’ new book constructs a coherent historical narrative of the emergence of modern mass consumer capitalism out of late nineteenth-early twentieth century capitalism. It is masterfully written, and hopefully, will be read by many economists and, most importantly, by the next generation."William Waller, Hobart and William Smith College"In his new book, John P. Watkins has utilized the insights of two of the greatest analysts of the paradoxical nature of American economic development, Thorstein Veblen and John Maynard Keynes, to interpret the key moments of the last one hundred and fifty years of American capitalism. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Dynamics of EU External Energy Relations
Book SynopsisThe Dynamics of EU External Energy Relations examines the behaviour of the European Commission in EU external energy relations paying particular attention to the dynamics existing between the Commission and the member states. It examines the Commission as a constrained policy-entrepreneur trying to expand its power, budget and competences, yet frustrated by member states protective of their national sovereignty.Analysing the Commission as agent and the member states as its principals, the book proposes a more nuanced examination of behaviour where the agent tries to satisfy its own interests but is still responsive to the preferences of the principals. Using a wide range of original primary and secondary data, the book argues that EU external energy relations reflect the dynamics of the relations between the Commission and the member states. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of European Union studies and politics, EU energy and foreign Table of Contents1. Taylor & Francis Ltd Dependency Theory Revisited
Book SynopsisThis title was first published in 2001. An important critical study of the theories of dependency both past and present. Since the theories of dependency are based on the Marxian notion of exploitation and backwardness, the book starts with the elaboration of the Marxian theory of development and underdevelopment. The book analyses various concepts and precepts of dependency as well as critically discussing the individual theories of Baran, Frank, Amin, Emmanuel, Prebisch and Singer. The contributions of more recent writers including Furtado, Kay, Wallerstein and Marini are also considered. The main focus of the book lies in the thorough analysis of all the important traditional as well as modern theories of dependency. The main message of the present book is that the phenomenology of dependency is still relevant as a methodology of study of development and underdevelopment. The book incorporates some pressing contemporary issues to give fresh flavour to the old dependency debate. A spTrade Review’The fundamental message of the present book is that the theory of dependency is still relevant, alive and kicking...a real contribution.’ Associate Professor Mohd. Isa Haji Bakar, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia '...Ghosh has produced a very useful eclectic study of dependency, which is jargon free and therefore accessible to undergraduates, whilst postgraduates will find it an invaluable text...the last chapter is the most original chapter in the book, and here he is able to link the various theoretical issues discussed in earlier chapters, with issues confronting Third World governments...' Taylor & Francis Ltd Routledge Handbook of Sport and Politics
Book SynopsisSport is frequently considered to be an aspect of popular culture that is, or should be, untainted by the political. However, there is a broad consensus among academics that sport is often at the heart of the political and the political is often central to sport. From the 1936 Olympic Games in Nazi Germany to the civil unrest that preceded the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, sport and politics have remained symbiotic bedfellows. The Routledge Handbook of Sport and Politics goes further than any other book in surveying the complex, embedded relationships between sport and politics. With sections addressing ideologies, nation and statehood, corporate politics, political activism, social justice, and the politics of sports events, it introduces the conceptual foundations that underpin our understanding of the sport-politics nexus and examines emergent issues in this field of study. Taylor & Francis Ltd Routledge Handbook of Macroeconomic Methodology
Book SynopsisThe present macroeconomic crisis has demonstrated that a deeper understanding of the importance of relevant macroeconomic theories and methods is wanting. Additionally, lack of methodological awareness is behind much of the disagreement within macroeconomics which, looked upon from outside, often appears incomprehensible. The Handbook gives a structured presentation of the study of principles and procedures by which macroeconomics is researched, taught and communicated both within academia and to a wider audience, and why specific theories, research strategies and teaching are preferred. The principles of selecting theory relevant to real-world problems are the core of methodology. This book contains a broad range of arguments behind theory construction and appraisal and the consequences of these choices within the field of macroeconomics. An international range of experts provide clear analysis of key concepts, ideas and principles to give academics, studeTrade Review“Within the bulk of the existing literature on economic methodology the distinctive methodological questions concerning the methodology of macroeconomics, despite their relevance, have been so far comparatively neglected. This comprehensive Handbook eventually fills the gap in a way that would be hard to beat. It deserves, therefore, to be warmly recommended to all readers with an interest in the methodology and philosophy of economics, in the history of economic thought and, last but not least, in macroeconomics per se.”Andrea Salanti, University of Bergamo“Due to the economic crises of recent years there is an increasing interest by students to look for answers outside the mainstream macroeconomic understanding. As such, students are not only looking for an alternative theoretical macroeconomic universe, they are also increasingly interested in methodological aspects of macroeconomic theory. Taylor & Francis Ltd Theories of International Economics
Book SynopsisInternational economic theories emerged within particular social, economic and political frameworks and were developed as solutions to the problems of contemporary economics. In order to understand the increasingly complex and interdependent state of today's international economy, we need to realise the importance of those theories that came before. However, many international economics textbooks do not place the theories they discuss within this historical context.Theories of International Economics aims to redress the balance by taking a pluralistic approach, presenting with authority both orthodox and heterodox international economic theories. Each chapter shows the necessarily interdependent nature of schools of international economic theories by including an historical component that shows how each school of thought developed, why it developed and what it has to say about the contemporary world. This text examines a wide range of theories with an emphasis on theTrade Review'This remarkable book sets out the theories of international trade of no fewer than eleven schools of thought, from mercantilism to feminism, taking in Ricardo, Marx, Veblen, Hayek, Keynes, Krugman and many others on the way. It is an outstanding example of what can be achieved by taking a pluralist approach to economic theory, and it should be read by anyone with the slightest interest in international economics.' — John E. King La Trobe University and Federation University Australia‘Theories of International Economics offers a masterly and comprehensive guide in clear and accessible terms. It's quite a journey - from mercantilism to feminism - but in contrast with other surveys Lichtenstein keeps past histories and global diversities well in mind. In that way his book is balanced, critical and highly recommended.’ — Terrell Carver, Professor of Political Theory, University of Bristol, UK‘This text is a rare gem. It has everything you need: historical context, thorough coverage of contemporary issues, careful treatment of orthodox and heterodox approaches and lucid prose throughout.’ — William M. Dugger, Professor of Economics, The University of Tulsa, USA'This is just the type of pluralist textbook that is now increasingly in demand. Peter Lichtenstein offers an admirably broad-ranging account of several different approaches to international economics, building on an account of the history of thought in this area and of the real economic context. The text will be welcome, not only to students seeking an accessible pluralist text, but also to the general reader.' — Sheila Dow, Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Stirling and Adjunct Professor of Economics at the University of Victoria, UK‘The financial crisis has given support to the suspicion that economic orthodoxy has become stagnant and irrelevant. Lichtenstein’s book offers a unique and sorely-needed alternative that not only does a marvelous job in capturing the essence of mainstream and heterodox theory, but in a manner that is clear and set in the relevant historical, institutional, and social context. Book SynopsisContemporary Regional Development in Africa interrogates well-known concerns in the areas of regionalism and economic integration in contemporary Africa, while offering an added uniqueness by highlighting the capacity imperatives of the issues, and proposing critical policy guideposts. The volume juxtaposes a set of 'dynamic' entanglements - new and micro-regionalism, informal cross-border trade, intra-African and African FDI plus cross-border investments, infrastructure development, science and technology, regional value-chains, conflict management and regional security - with fluid interpretations of regional development. The chapters provide snapshots of the several emerging and complex regionalisms and highlight a set of relevant and often overlapping analyses - drawing on authors' nuanced and granular understanding of the African landscape. The varied, yet interlinked, nature of issues covered in this study make the book valuable and attractive to academics, researchers, policymakTrade Review’At a time when regionalism seems increasingly caught between micro-regional initiatives and mega-regional negotiations, this timely discussion of contemporary regional development in Africa helps to clarify the issues involved. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Economics of Conflict and Peace
Book SynopsisThis work addresses new directions in research on the economic theory of conflict, the cost of war, and the benefits of peace. A collection of 17 papers drawing on contributors from all continents, the volume is divided into four sections. The first discusses novel ways to think about the economics of conflict and peace from theory perspectives. These include discussions of conflict from the perspectives of standard neoclassical analysis and economic geography. An especially interesting paper in this section addresses conflict in the context of the emerging theory of international public finance. A second section deals with military expenditures, economic/human development and economic growth in the US and developing nations of Asia and Africa. The volume enters new territory in sections three and four. Section three contains a set of papers on the economic cost of war and war’s aftermath, significantly expanding economists’ rather modest efforts to date.
