Berghahn Books, Incorporated The Triumph of Propaganda: Film and National
Book Synopsis The Nazis saw film as a major vehicle for both indoctrination and escapist pacification of the "masses"; in fact, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels tried to create a German counter-Hollywood. This highly acclaimed study, by one of Germany's leading commentators and authors on cultural policy, analyses the pictorial and spoken language of the various film genres in the Third Reich, including news reels, documentaries, feature and "cultural" films. It shows how a powerful and sinister propaganda machine emerged which, by deploying a wide range of psychological techniques, exerted a strong fascination on the masses. These methods were so successful that they continue to serve as models for totalitarian régimes to this day.Trade Review "This book has no scholarly equivalent in English." · ChoiceTable of Contents Preface Chapter 1. London Publishing Partnership A Heretic's Manifesto: Essays on the Unsayable
Book SynopsisCan a woman have a penis? Is the West forever stained by racism? Are we all going to die from climate change? To the liberal establishment of London, New York or Sydney, the answer to all of these questions is 'Yes'. And anyone who disagrees is a racist, climate-denying transphobe. Our elites have become convinced of some very strange and extreme ideas. And yet there is precious little pushback against them. Critics are cowed by the threat of shaming, cancellation, even arrest. The new orthodoxies of our age are risible, and yet the space for dissent is shrinking. We need more heretics. Throughout history, it has been those brave enough to puncture the prevailing groupthink who have propelled society forward. But they are in shockingly short supply today. In this collection of original essays, Brendan O'Neill remakes the case for heresy - and commits a few heresies of his own along the way.Trade Review"Brendan O'Neill brings a sharp eye and cutting wit to the follies of our times. Chelsea Green Publishing Co The Truth About COVID-19: Exposing The Great
Book SynopsisMultiple New York Times best-selling author Dr. Joseph Mercola and Ronnie Cummins, founder and director of the Organic Consumers Association, team up to expose the truth—and end the madness—about COVID-19. Since early 2020, the world has experienced a series of catastrophic events—a global pandemic caused by what appears to be an engineered coronavirus; international lockdowns and border closings causing widespread business closures, economic collapse, and massive unemployment; and an unprecedented curtailment of civil liberties and freedoms in the name of keeping people safe by locking them up in their homes. We are now living in a world that is increasingly ruled, not by our democratic systems and institutions, but by public health fiat, carried out by politicians who rule by instilling fear and panic. In The Truth About COVID-19, Dr. Mercola and Cummins reveal new and emerging evidence that: The SARS-CoV-2 virus was, indeed, lab-engineered and emerged from a negligently managed bioweapons lab in Wuhan, China The global pandemic was long anticipated by global elites who have used it to facilitate and hide the largest upward transfer of wealth in human history PCR testing, case counts, morbidity, and vaccine safety and efficacy data have been widely manipulated and misrepresented Obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are known to worsen COVID-19 outcomes, but the junk food industry continues to push its agenda at the expense of public health Safe, simple, and inexpensive treatment and prevention for COVID-19 have been censored and suppressed to create a clear path for vaccine acceptance Effectiveness of the vaccines has been wildly exaggerated and major safety questions have gone unanswered The good news in all of this is that we can take control of our health and that, together, we have the power to unite and fight back for our health, democracy, and freedom. The time is now for a global awakening. As Dr. Mercola and Cummins remind us, this is the fight of our lives.Trade Review"The most mind-blowing book I've read lately."—Ben Greenfield, New York Times bestselling author

Ebury Publishing Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire: A 500-Year
Book Synopsis You’re entitled to your own opinion but not your own factsFantasy is the USA’s primary product. From the Pilgrim Fathers onward America has been a place where renegades and freaks came in search of freedom to create their own realities with little objectively regulated truth standing in their way. The freedom to invent and believe whatever the hell you like is, in some ways, an unwritten constitutional right. But, this do-your-own-thing freedom also is the driving credo of America's current transformation where the difference between opinion and fact is rapidly crumbling. So how did we get to this weird pseudo-reality, where science and objective facts are dismissed in favour of opinions and wild speculation, or indeed, fantasies? The post truth, fake news, free-for-all mentality isn’t exactly a new phenomenon. If you want to understand Trump's America, how the lines between reality and illusion have become dangerously blurred, you have to go back to the very beginning and take a dizzying road trip across five centuries of crackpot delusion and make-believe from Salem to Scientology.Fantasyland is a journey that connects the dots between crazed franchises of true believers – a rich freak show tapestry from Mormons to Flat-Earthers and satanic panic, new age quacks to anti-vaxxers, conspiracy theorists of every stripe, creationists to climate change deniers, UFO-obsessives to gun-toting libertarians, showmen hucksters from P T Barnum to Trump himself, all topped off with a dangerous dose of anti-government paranoia and pseudoscience. Along the way, New York Times bestselling author Kurt Andersen has created a unique and raucous history of America and a new paradigm for understanding our post-factual world.Trade ReviewNot only a must-read for anyone wanting to understand Trump’s America but also a laugh-out-loud undiluted pleasure -- Will Storr, author of SelfieThis is an important book - the indispensable book - for understanding America in the age of Trump. It’s an eye-opening history filled with brilliant insights, a saga of how we were always susceptible to fantasy, from the Puritan fanatics to the talk-radio and Internet wackos who mix show business, hucksterism, and conspiracy theories. -- Walter Isaacson, author of Steve JobsFantasyland presents the very best kind of idea – one that, in retrospect, seems obvious, but which took a seer like Kurt Andersen to piece together. The thinking and the writing are both dazzling; it is at once a history lesson and an oh-so-modern cri de coeur; it’s an absolute joy to read, and will leave your brain dancing with excitement long after you’re done -- Stephen Dubner, co-author of FreakonomicsAn absorbing, must-read polemic. * Newsday *The most important book that I have read this year. -- Lawrence O'Donnell * The Last Word, MSNBC *

Templeton Foundation Press,U.S. Primal Screams: How the Sexual Revolution Created
Book SynopsisWho am I? The question today haunts every society in the Western world. Legions of people—especially the young—have become unmoored from a firm sense of self. To compensate, they join the ranks of ideological tribes spawned by identity politics and react with frenzy against any perceived threat to their group. As identitarians track and expose the ideologically impure, other citizens face the consequences of their rancor: a litany of “isms” run amok across all levels of cultural life, the free marketplace of ideas muted by agendas shouted through megaphones, and a spirit of general goodwill warped into a state of perpetual outrage. How did we get here? Why have we divided against one another so bitterly? In Primal Screams, acclaimed cultural critic Mary Eberstadt presents the most provocative and original theory to come along in recent years. The rise of identity politics, she argues, is a direct result of the fallout of the sexual revolution, especially the collapse and shrinkage of the family. As Eberstadt illustrates, humans have forged their identities within the kinship structure from time immemorial. The extended family, in a real sense, is the first tribe and teacher. But with its unprecedented decline across various measures, generations of people have been set adrift and can no longer answer the question Who am I? concerning primordial ties. Desperate for solidarity and connection, they claim membership in politicized groups whose displays of frantic irrationalism amount to primal screams for familial and communal loss. Written in her impeccable style and with empathy rarely encountered in today’s divisive discourse, Eberstadt’s theory holds immense explanatory power that no serious citizen can afford to ignore. The book concludes with three incisive essays by Rod Dreher, Mark Lilla, and Peter Thiel, each sharing their perspective on the author’s formidable argument. Trade Review "Primal Screams is and should be controversial. It is also quite brilliant. I can think of few books in recent memory that eschews academic and journalistic orthodoxy in as cutting and well defended away. Anyone interested in the roots of our current identity-driven dilemmas would be remiss in not reading it."—The Federalist “Eberstadt is a shrewd, thoughtful analyst of our culture, and scrutinizes her subject through a nonpartisan lens….Primal Screams is, then, important for readers of all political and ideological complexions.”—Washington Examiner “Mary Eberstadt manages the nearly impossible: finding something new—and worthwhile—to say about identity politics. . . . If we see more books about identity politics in the near future, and doubtless we will, they will have to grapple with Eberstadt's argument and take a look through the lens she provides.”—Washington Free Beacon "Mary Eberstadt’s thesis is exactly right, and she backs it up with evidence."—Public Discourse “Eberstadt’s work is not only for conservatives but also for everyone who thinks about contemporary society and finds himself puzzled, worried, or in a foreboding frame of mind about the alarming spike in identity politics as well as suicide, depression, substance abuse, and loneliness.”—National Review “Vintage Eberstadt: clearly argued with conviction. . . . This is a good and helpful book, and the responses of Dreher and company are thought-provoking and constructive. . . . Eberstadt’s greatest strength is her consistent calm and compassionate tone. As such, she offers us a model for how political discussion should be pursued.”—The Gospel Coalition "An incredibly influential, intellectual, precise commentary about current culture, philosophy, and the fate of the post-modern man."—Jonathan Van Maren, LifeSite News "Insightful."—The Conway Daily Sun "I wait for Mary Eberstadt’s books the way some people used to wait for the next Harry Potter installment." —Fr. John Hollowell, Pastor of Annunciation and St. Paul's Catholic Church "Primal Screams provides a cogent, prophetic take on how and why it is that so many well-educated, materially well-off people—after all, this is mostly a Western political development — do not seem to know who they are."—Black Christian News Network One "A cogent, prophetic take on how and why it is that so many well-educated, materially well-off people...do not seem to know who they are." —The Christian Post "Mary Eberstadt is one of America’s foremost public intellectuals." —John Stonestreet, Breakpoint "Primal Screams stands as essential reading for all pastors, educators, church leaders and workers, and, supremely, parents." —John J. Bombaro, The Mod "Mrs. Eberstadt’s study is a welcome contribution to the current crisis in an increasingly secularized society. It is an attempt to pick away at a problem that is a vast tangle of personal motivations, subconscious drives and desires, societal currents, historical trends, socio-economic factors, and the irrational reactions of the mob. She’s done well to hone in on a crucial aspect to shed light on the problem."—Dwight Longenecker, The Imaginative Conservative “Mary Eberstadt’s book is a thought-provoking, informed lead-in to a discussion that the world urgently needs to have.” —Margaret Hickey, Position Papers “A well-researched, powerfully argued, and profound account of the deepest sources of our current cultural crises. Wise and courageous, Mary Eberstadt has written an indispensable book for understanding our time.” —Leon R. Kass, professor emeritus, Committee on Social Thought, The University of Chicago “Primal Screams is a deeply thought-provoking reflection on human nature and the fate of our republic.” —Mary Ann Glendon, Learned Hand Professor of Law, Harvard University "Some basic questions of identity have overtaken Western politics in the 21st century, and before they can be addressed, they must be understood. With her characteristic clarity and breadth of learning, Mary Eberstadt offers a powerfully persuasive guide to why we are beset by these challenges, and how to take them on." —Yuval Levin, editor of National Affairs “Mary Eberstadt proves, yet again, that she is one of America's most insightful—as well as compassionate—social analysts.”—George Weigel, Distinguished Senior Fellow and William E. Simon Chair in Catholic Studies, Ethics and Public Policy Center "Mary Eberstadt understands ‘identity politics’ better than its practitioners and critics to date. She considers why so many people need the sense of belonging that identity politics seeks to provide. Her answer is terrifying—a loss that human beings of modern times have suffered but of which we have been almost entirely unaware. Until now.”—Tod Lindberg, author of The Heroic Heart: Greatness Ancient and Modern “It is scarcely a foregone conclusion that our society will return to sanity on questions of sexual morality and marriage. But if we do, then prophets like Mary Eberstadt will be celebrated in song and story.”—Robert P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence, Princeton University “In Primal Screams, Mary Eberstadt responds to the deepest cries of the wounded souls of our time. HarperCollins Publishers Whats Left
Book SynopsisFrom the much-loved, witty and excoriating voice of journalist Nick Cohen, a powerful and irreverent dissection of the agonies, idiocies and compromises of mainstream liberal thought.Nick Cohen comes from the Left. While growing up, his mother would search the supermarket shelves for politically reputable citrus fruit and despair. When, at the age of 13, he found out that his kind and thoughtful English teacher voted Conservative, he nearly fell off his chair: ''To be good, you had to be on the Left.''Today he''s no less confused. When he looks around him, in the aftermath of the invasion of Iraq, he sees a community of Left-leaning liberals standing on their heads. Why is it that apologies for a militant Islam that stands for everything the liberal-Left is against come from a section of the Left? After the American and British wars in Bosnia and Kosovo against Slobodan Milosevic''s ethnic cleansers, why were men and women of the Left denying the existence of Serb concentration camps? Trade Review'A roaring polemic of outrage against the moral and political crisis of the liberal tradition. It is already one of the most discussed current affairs books of the new year…At the very least it forces anyone on the left to think carefully about where their movement has ended up in the modern world.' The Guardian ‘The book is a superbly sustained polemic.' Sunday Times ‘Exceptional and necessary…Do not feel you have to be a leftist or liberal to read it, because it engages with an argument that it crucial for all of us, and for our time.’ Christopher Hitchens, Sunday Times ‘This is a brave, honest and brilliant book. Every page has a provocative insight that makes you want to shake the author's hand or collar him for an argument. Who could ask for more?’ The Observer '(He writes with) a genuine passion and human sympathy about people who have experienced appalling suffering.' Michael Burleigh, The Evening Standard ‘Undoubtedly controversial and provocative “What’s Left?” is, as its title suggests, a bleakly witty but perhaps dimly hopeful examination of what it means to be liberal in an age where the lines that have been drawn in the sand are in danger of being washed away.’ Waterstones Books Quarterly ‘One of the most powerful denunciations of the manner in which the Left has lost its way…Cohen's is a brave voice.'Michael Gove, The Spectator 'Nick Cohen explains how contemporary liberals have lost their way with his usual polemical brio.' The Observer 'An essay of wide reference and great brilliance.' John Lloyd, Financial Times

HarperCollins Publishers Wake Up
Book SynopsisThe Sunday Times Number One BestsellerIt's time we get back to common sense. It's time to cancel the cancel culture. It's time to Wake Up.If, like me, you're sick and tired of being told how to think, speak, eat and behave, then this book is for you.If, like me, you think the world's going absolutely nuts, then this book is for you.If, like me, you think NHS heroes and Captain Tom are the real stars of our society, not self-obsessed tone-deaf celebrities (and royal renegades!), then this book is for you. If, like me, you're sickened by the cancel culture bullies destroying people's careers and lives, then this book is for you. From feminism to masculinity, racism to gender, body image to veganism, mental health to competitiveness at school, the right to free speech and expressing an honestly held opinion is being crushed at the altar of woke' political correctness. In 2020, the world faced its biggest crisis in a generation: a global pandemic. In the UK, it exposed deep divisions within society and laid bare a toxic culture war that had been raging beneath the surface. From the outset, Piers Morgan urged the nation to come to its senses, once and for all, and held the Government to often ferocious account over its handling of the crisis.COVID-19 shed shocking light on the problems that plague our country. Stockpilers and lockdown-cheats revealed our grotesque levels of self-interest and the virtue-signalling woke brigade continued their furious assault on free speech, shutting down debate on important issues like gender, racism and feminism. Yet just as coronavirus exposed our flaws, it also showcased our strengths. We saw selfless bravery in the heroic efforts of our healthcare staff. A greater appreciation of migrant workers. A return of local community spirit. And inspiring, noble acts from members of the public such as Captain Sir Tom Moore.Wake Up is Piers' rallying cry for a united future in which we reconsider what really matters in life. It is a plea for the return of true liberalism, where freedom of speech is king. Most of all, it is a powerful account of how the world finally started to wake up, and why it mustn't go back to sleep again.Trade Review‘A fast, entertaining read’ The Guardian ‘A very timely trumpet blast’ Saga

Here the grandparents and great-grandparents of today sum up in their own words - for the first and perhaps the last time - the vast changes that have overtaken China''s people over a century. The book is at once a journey by the author through time and place, and a memorial to those who have lived through war and civil war, persecution, invasion, revolution, famine, modernization, Westernization - and have survived into the 21st century. We meet everyday heroes, now in their seventies, eighties and nineties, from across this vast country - a herb woman at a market, retired teachers, a legendary ''double-gun woman'', Red Guards, oil pioneers, an acrobat, a female general, a lantern maker, taxi drivers, and more- those whose voices, as Xinran says, ''will help our future understand our past''.

Vintage Publishing Enough Said
Book SynopsisLONGLISTED FOR THE ORWELL PRIZE 2017How do we discuss serious ideas in the age of 24-hour news? What was rhetoric in the past and what should it be now? And what does Islamic State have in common with Donald Trump? We've never had more information or more opportunity to debate the issues of the day. Yet the relationship between politicians, the media and the public is characterised by suspicion, mistrust and apathy. What has gone wrong?Enough Said reveals how political, social and technological change has transformed our political landscape and how we talk about the issues that affect us all. Political rhetoric has become stale and the mistrust of politicians has made voters flock to populists who promise authenticity, honesty and truth instead of spin, evasiveness and lies.Featuring Ronald Reagan and Sarah Palin, Tony Blair and George Osborne, Silvio Berlusconi and many more star performers, Enough Said shows how public laTrade Review[A] superb book… Thompson’s own experience in the media is brilliantly deployed throughout for insight… Thompson is a sharp and entertaining analyst of political language itself. -- Steven Poole * Guardian *He writes restlessly and compellingly… [An] intricately but also urgently argued book. -- John Lloyd * Financial Times *Thompson’s great virtue in this book is his steady and cool-headed historicism… Thompson is lucid, well read, level-headed and thoughtful. His range of reference is wide…He has a robust familiarity with the history of scholarship on rhetoric, and scatters his text with easeful and on-point references to Max Weber, Martin Heidegger and Marshall McLuhan… The detail is excellent. Enough Said’s particular glories, to this reader, are Thompson’s frequent and sensitive close readings of particular instances of public language. -- Sam Leith * Prospect *[An] important study ... [Thompson] usually advances his case in cool, nuanced and forensic prose, but he is a blistering flame-thrower about the consequences of the digital revolution. -- Andrew Rawnsley * Observer *Ranging masterfully from Aristotle and Pericles to the age of Trump and Twitter, Mark Thompson makes the case for political rhetoric as a democratic art. This vividly-written, trenchant book is a much-needed antidote to the miasma of spin, incivility, and "truthiness" that afflicts politics today. -- Michael Sandel, author of What Money Can't Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets

Book SynopsisThe epic, disturbing story of how the FBI is America''s real secret service''Such creatures of passion, disloyalty, and anarchy must be crushed out. The hand of our power should close over them at once'' President Woodrow Wilson, 1919The United States is a country founded on the ideals of democracy and freedom, yet throughout the last century it has used secret and lawless methods to destroy its enemies. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is the most powerful of these forces. Following his award-winning history of the C.I.A., Legacy of Ashes, Tim Weiner has now written the first full history of the F.B.I. as a secret intellligence service. Drawn entirely from firsthand materials in the F.B.I.''s own files, Enemies brilliantly brings to life the entire story, from the cracking of anarchist cells to the prosecution of the ''war on terror''. Albania, the last Stalinist outpost in Europe, was almost impossible to visit, almost impossible to leave. It was a place of queuing and scarcity, of political executions and secret police. To Lea, it was home. People were equal, neighbours helped each other, and children were expected to build a better world. There was community and hope. Then, in December 1990, everything changed. The statues of Stalin and Hoxha were toppled. Almost overnight, people could vote freely, wear what they liked and worship as they wished. There was no longer anything to fear from prying ears. But factories shut, jobs disappeared and thousands fled to Italy on crowded ships, only to be sent back. Predatory pyramid schemes eventually bankrupted the country, leading to violent conflict. As one generation''s aspirations became another''s disillusionment, and as her own family''s secrets were revealed, Lea found herself questioning what freedom really meant.Free is an engrossing memoir of coming of age amid political upheaval. With acute insight and wit, Lea Ypi traces the limits of progress and the burden of the past, illuminating the spaces between ideals and reality, and the hopes and fears of people pulled up by the sweep of history.THE SUNDAY TIMES MEMOIR OF THE YEARWINNER OF THE SLIGHTLY FOXED BEST FIRST BIOGRAPHY PRIZESHORTLISTED FOR THE COSTA BIOGRAPHY AWARDSHORTLISTED FOR THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE FOR NON-FICTIONSHORTLISTED FOR THE GORDON BURN PRIZECHOSEN AS A BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE GUARDIAN, FINANCIAL TIMES, SUNDAY TIMES, TLS, DAILY MAIL, NEW STATESMAN AND SPECTATORTrade ReviewIf you read one memoir this year, let it be this * Sunday Times, Books of the Year *A magical, timeless and important account of what life was really like under communism. Oxford University Press Key Thinkers of the Radical Right
Book SynopsisSince the start of the twenty-first century, the political mainstream has been shifting to the right. The liberal orthodoxy that took hold in the West as a reaction to the Second World War is breaking down. In Europe, populist political parties have pulled the mainstream in their direction; in America, a series of challenges to the Republican mainstream culminated in the 2016 election of Donald Trump. Oxford University Press Making Crime Pay Law and Order in Contemporary American Politics Law Order in Contemporary American Politics Studies in Crime and Public Policy
Book SynopsisMost Americans are not aware that the US prison population has tripled over the past two decades, nor that the US has the highest rate of incarceration in the industrialized world. Despite these facts, politicians from across the ideological spectrum continue to campaign on law and order platforms and to propose three strikes--and even two strikes--sentencing laws. Why is this the case? How have crime, drugs, and delinquency come to be such salient political issues, and why have enhanced punishment and social control been defined as the most appropriate responses to these complex social problems? Making Crime Pay: Law and Order in Contemporary American Politics provides original, fascinating, and persuasive answers to these questions. According to conventional wisdom, the worsening of the crime and drug problems has led the public to become more punitive, and tough anti-crime policies are politicians'' collective response to this popular sentiment. Katherine Beckett challenges this interpretation, arguing instead that the origins of the punitive shift in crime control policy lie in the political rather than the penal realm--particularly in the tumultuous period of the 1960s.Trade Review...well-written, sharply focused....provides a useful perspective on an immensely consequential issue. * Choice *...Beckett does an excellent job deconstructing the politics of crime policy in this country. * The ICCA Review of Books *Beckett immerses herself in the political, social, historical, and discursive context of crime contol in America. The result is an excellent example of how interdisciplinary research can enhance our understanding of complex social phenomena. * Journal of Criminal Justice *Table of Contents1. Oxford University Press An Introduction to Global Health Delivery
Book SynopsisAn Introduction to Global Health Delivery, Second Edition expands the scope of global health delivery to include Black Lives Matter, climate justice, and COVID-19 as part of its mission to address injustice, reduce global health disparities, and deliver health care as a human right.Trade ReviewThis book is excellent. It describes in a very clear, well-organized, and readable manner the causes of healthcare inequalities and what can be done to address them. Its message is equally applicable to underserved rural areas, reservations, and poor inner-city neighborhoods of the U.S. as it is to poor countries that bear the burden of colonialism. This edition's sections addressing the COVID-19 pandemic present a much-needed update. * Anna A Helm, BS, MPH, Multnomah County *An Introduction to Global Health Delivery [is] a highly readable, inspiring book that firmly places global health in the context of equity and human rights. * Madhukar Pai, Nature Microbiology *A must-read for both newcomers and established professionals in the field of global health. Mukherjee captures the essence of global health, presenting concrete examples of the stepping stones involved in transforming health in countries throughout the world. * Agnes Binagwaho, former Minister of Health, Rwanda *A comprehensive, essential resource linking theory, data, and implementation in ways that are novel and, most importantly, immediately useful for anyone working in global health. This book guides the reader through the evolution of the field, then into a much more pragmatic approach that holds at its center the moral conviction that all people in the world have a right to quality health care. * Jim Y. Kim, former President, World Bank Group *This book helps us understand why health systems in poor countries are weak and how to analyze health inequality from a social perspective integrated with biological concerns. The big challenge now is to improve the health of the world's poor based on what we know. Mukherjee radically recasts global health into a field centered on the systemic, long term, and high-quality public provision of care. Both the pursuit of sustainable development and the honoring of health as a human right will be greatly aided by her penetrating investigations and presentation. * Amartya Sen, Harvard University *

Oxford University Press Inc Free Speech
Book SynopsisAn engaging guide to the most important free speech rules, rationales, and debates, including the strongest arguments for and against protecting the most controversial speech, such as hate speech and disinformation. This concise but comprehensive book engagingly lays out specific answers to myriad topical questions about free speech law, and also general explanations of how and why the law distinguishes between protected and punishable speech. Free Speech provides the essential background for understanding and contributing to our burgeoning debates about whether to protect speech with various kinds of controversial content, such as hate speech and disinformation: the applicable legal tenets and the strongest arguments for and against them. The book focuses on modern First Amendment law, explaining the historic factors that propelled its evolution in a more speech-protective direction - in particular, the Civil Rights Movement. It highlights the many cases, involving multiple issues, in which robust speech-protective principles aided advocates of racial justice and other human rights causes. The book also shows how these holdings reflect universal, timeless values, which have been incorporated in many other legal systems, and have inspired countless thinkers and activists alike. Without oversimplifying the complexities of free speech law, the book''s lively question-and-answer format summarizes this law in an understandable, interesting, and memorable fashion. It addresses the issues in a logical sequence, presenting colorful facts and eloquent language from landmark Supreme Court opinions. It will be illuminating to a wide range of readers, from those who know nothing about free speech law, to those who have studied it but seek a well-organized summary of major doctrinal rules, as well as insights into their background, rationales, and interconnections.

Oxford University Press (UK) The Culture of Control Crime and Social Order in Contemporary Society Clarendon Studies in Criminology
Book SynopsisThe Culture of Control charts the dramatic changes in crime control and criminal justice that have occurred in Britain and America over the last 25 years. It then explains these transformations by showing how the social organization of late modern society has prompted a series of political and cultural adaptations that alter how governments and citizens think and act in relation to crime. The book presents an original and in-depth analysis of contemporary crime control, revealing its underlying logics and rationalities, and identifying the social relations and cultural sensibilities that have produced this new culture of control. In developing a history of the present in the field of crime control, David Garland presents an intertwined history of the welfare state and the criminal justice state, a theory of social and penal change, and an account of how social order is constructed in late modern societies. Drawing on extensive research in the UK and the USA, he shows in detail how the social, economic and cultural forces of the late 20th century have reshaped criminological thought, public policy, and the cultural meaning of crime and criminals. The Culture of Control explains how our responses to crime and our sense of criminal justice came to be so dramatically reconfigured at the end of the 20th century. The shifting policies of crime and punishment, welfare and security - and the changing class, race and gender relations that underpin them - are viewed as aspects of the problem of governing late modern society and creating social order in a rapidly changing social world. Its theoretical scope, empirical range and interpretative insight make this book an indispensable guide to one of the central issues of our time.Trade ReviewThere is a tremendous readability and clarity about The Culture of Control that almost disguises the mass of learning and information in the book. In fact, it is difficult to know which feature is to be admired more: the extraordinary sophistication, the integration of so many different approaches and disciplines, the snappy writing, or the lucid ordering of the argument. There is compelling realism about Garland's work. Much of it rings true, although some may find the reading of recent social history rather left wing. Against the backdrop of the new, dispiriting, CJS White Paper, here is a prophet for our times. * Legal and Criminological Psychology *Garland's book is more than just an important contribution to criminology. It is also a major work of social analysis, which deserves to be read more widely ... his account of changes in crime control also provides one of the clearest and most convincing characterizations of contemporary society in general. * Robert Reiner, The Times Literary Supplement *Table of Contents1. Oxford University Press Disrupt and Deny
Book SynopsisDisrupt and Deny is the untold story behind Britain''s secret scheming against both enemies and friends from 1945 to the present day. British leaders use spies and Special Forces to interfere in the affairs of others discreetly and deniably. Since 1945, MI6 has spread misinformation designed to divide and discredit targets from the Middle East to Eastern Europe and Northern Ireland. It has instigated whispering campaigns and planted false evidence on officials working behind the Iron Curtain, tried to foment revolution in Albania, blown up ships to prevent the passage of refugees to Israel, and secretly funnelled aid to insurgents in Afghanistan and dissidents in Poland. MI6 has launched cultural and economic warfare against Iceland and Czechoslovakia. It has tried to instigate coups in Congo, Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and elsewhere. Through bribery and blackmail, Britain has rigged elections as colonies moved to independence. Britain has fought secret wars in Yemen, Indonesia, and Oman - and discreetly used Special Forces to eliminate enemies from colonial Malaya to Libya during the Arab Spring. This is covert action: a vital, though controversial, tool of statecraft and perhaps the most sensitive of all government activity. If used wisely, it can play an important role in pursuing national interests in a dangerous world. If used poorly, it can cause political scandal - or worse. In Disrupt and Deny, Rory Cormac tells the remarkable true story of Britain''s secret scheming against its enemies, as well as its friends; of intrigue and manoeuvring within the darkest corridors of Whitehall, where officials fought to maintain control of this most sensitive and seductive work; and, above all, of Britain''s attempt to use smoke and mirrors to mask decline. He reveals hitherto secret operations, the slush funds that paid for them, and the battles in Whitehall that shaped them.Trade ReviewReview from previous edition Revelatory and meticulously researched. Rory Cormac moves in the forensic footsteps of Peter Hennessy, patiently sleuthing his way through forgotten archives and private papers, finding disturbing documents that Whitehall civil servants hoped had long been buried. Half a century after we began to learn about SOE and Bletchley Park, there are still surprises. * Richard Aldrich, The Times Literary Supplement *A welcome and most timely book [which] provides plenty of evidence to show why it is time [that policy makers and spy chiefs] absence of accountability and freedom to break the law with impunity must end. * Richard Norton-Taylor, Literary Review *A work of outstanding scholarly originality. * Richard Davenport-Hines, Times Literary Supplement *Disrupt and Deny is a bold study of the postwar history of British covert action [and] Cormac attacks the subject with impressive energy and industry. The result is an engrossing journey through the history of a stubbornly opaque area of the secret world. * Huw Dylan, BBC History Magazine *A ground-breaking book ... It reads like a thriller and shines valuable light on how Britain's Secret Intelligence Service, M16, has spread misinformation designed to divide and discredit targets from the Middle East to Eastern Europe. * Francis Ghiles, ES Global *This excellent book relies on a high amount of archival material and represents the first detailed history of British covert action. * Lucy Trenta, Intelligence and National Security *An enthralling, well-written and authoritative history of Britain's role in covert operations from the Second World War to the present day. * Geraint Hughes, International Affairs *An important book about an important subject Disrupt and Deny should be read by anyone, citizens, scholars or those in government interested in Britain's place in the world, past and present. * Calder Walton, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University *A pioneering and highly readable book uncovering how Britain secretly used spies and special forces to stem national decline. * Professor Michael Goodman, King's College, London *Rory Cormac is one of the brightest rising stars in the expanding firmament of Intelligence Studies. Here he takes on one of the most difficult of research endeavors: probing the ins-and-outs of covert action as practiced by the British. He comes up with a balanced assessment written in lovely prose that is a pleasure to read. This book is a valuable dissection of an important topic that few have had the audacity to address. * Loch K. Oxford University Press General Theory of Domination and Justice
Book SynopsisIn all societies, past and present, many persons and groups have been subject to domination. Properly understood, domination is a great evil, the suffering of which ought to be minimized so far as possible. Surprisingly, however, political and social theorists have failed to provide a detailed analysis of the concept of domination in general. This study aims to redress this lacuna. It argues first, that domination should be understood as a condition experienced by persons or groups to the extent that they are dependent on a social relationship in which some other person or group wields arbitrary power over them; this is termed the ''arbitrary power conception'' of domination. It argues second, that we should regard it as wrong to perpetrate or permit unnecessary domination and, thus, that as a matter of justice the political and social institutions and practices of any society should be organized so as to minimize avoidable domination; this is termed ''justice as minimizing domination'Trade ReviewIt is surprising that a phenomenon of such obvious political and ethical significance as domination has largely escaped comprehensive analysis in the modern debate. As the title of Frank Lovett's book suggests, however, he aims to do something about this unfortunate fact. The result is a well researched and well argued book that deserves attentionLovett has thrown much needed light on a politically and morally consequential matter, and produced a work of impressive comprehensiveness in the process.
