Book SynopsisJohn Milton was a master of almost every type of verse, from the classical to the religious and from the lyrical to the epic. His early poems include the devotional ''On the Morning of Christ''s Nativity'', ''Comus'', a masque, and the pastoral elegy ''Lycidas''. After Cromwell''s death and the dashing of Milton''s political hopes, he began composing Paradise Lost, which reflects his profound understanding of politics and power. Written when Milton was at the height of his abilities, this great masterpiece fuses the Christian with the classical in its description of the fall of Man. In Samson Agonistes, Milton''s last work, the poet draws a parallel with his own life in the hero''s struggle to renew his faith in God.

Penguin Books Ltd The Divine Comedy
Book SynopsisBeginning with Dante''s liberation from Hell, Purgatory relates his ascent, accompanied by Virgil, of the Mount of Purgatory - a mountain of nine levels, formed from rock forced upwards when God threw Satan into depths of the earth. As he travels through the first seven levels, Dante observes the sinners who are waiting for their release into Paradise, and through these encounters he is himself transformed into a stronger and better man. For it is only when he has learned from each of these levels that he can ascend to the gateway to Heaven: the Garden of Eden. The second part of one of the greatest epic poems, Purgatory is an enthralling Christian allegory of sin, redemption and ultimate enlightenment.Trade Review“The English Dante of choice.” –Hugh Kenner“Exactly what we have waited for these years, a Dante with clarity, eloquence, terror, and profoundly moving depths.” –Robert Fagles, Princeton University“A marvel of fidelity to the original, of sobriety, and truly, of inspired poetry.” –Henri Peyre, Yale University

Book SynopsisAeschylus (525-c.456 bc) set his great trilogy in the immediate aftermath of the Fall of Troy, when King Agamemnon returns to Argos, a victor in war. Agamemnon depicts the hero''s discovery that his family has been destroyed by his wife''s infidelity and ends with his death at her callous hand. Clytemnestra''s crime is repaid in The Choephori when her outraged son Orestes kills both her and her lover. The Eumenides then follows Orestes as he is hounded to Athens by the Furies'' law of vengeance and depicts Athene replacing the bloody cycle of revenge with a system of civil justice. Written in the years after the Battle of Marathon, The Oresteian Trilogy affirmed the deliverance of democratic Athens not only from Persian conquest, but also from its own barbaric past.Table of ContentsThe Oreteian TrilogyIntroductionAgamemnonThe Choephori or The Libation-BearersThe EumenidesNotes to 'Agamemnon'Notes to 'The Choephori'Notes to 'The Eumenides'AppendixSelect BibliographyThe Pronunciation of Greek NamesGenealogical Table of the House of Atreus

Book SynopsisThe poems of two of China’s most influential classical poets: Tu Fu, called “China’s Shakespeare” (BBC), and Li Po, the subject of Ha Jin’s The Banished Immortal and “China’s most beloved poet” (The New Yorker) A Penguin ClassicLi Po (AD 701–62) and Tu Fu (AD 712–70) were devoted friends who are traditionally considered to be among China's greatest poets. Li Po, a legendary carouser, was an itinerant poet whose writing, often dream poems or spirit-journeys, soars to sublime heights in its descriptions of natural scenes and powerful emotions. His sheer escapism and joy is balanced by Tu Fu, who expresses the Confucian virtues of humanity and humility in more autobiographical works that are imbued with great compassion and earthy reality, and shot through with humour. Book SynopsisMenander (c. 341-291 BC) was the foremost innovator of Greek New Comedy, a dramatic style that moved away from the fantastical to focus upon the problems of ordinary Athenians. This collection contains the full text of 'Old Cantankerous' (Dyskolos), the only surviving complete example of New Comedy, as well as fragments from works including 'The Girl from Samos' and 'The Rape of the Locks', all of which are concerned with domestic catastrophes, the hazards of love and the trials of family life. Written in a poetic style regarded by the ancients as second only to Homer, these polished works - profoundly influential upon both Roman playwrights such as Plautus and Terence, and the wider Western tradition - may be regarded as the first true comedies of manners.Table of ContentsPlays and FragmentsPrefaceIntroductionFurther ReadingOld CantankerousThe Girl from SamosThe ArbitrationThe Rape of the LocksThe ShieldThe SikyonianThe Man She HatedThe Double Deceiver and The Two Bacchises by PlautusThe FarmerThe ToadyThe HarpistThe HeroThe PhantomThe Girl PossessedThe Girl from PerinthosTitle UnknownSome Longer FragmentsSome Fragments Doubtfully Attributed to MenanderNotes

What remains the same throughout the 40 years is the poet''s winning wit, accessibility and abiding readability'' Independent ----------------------------------''Time has confirmed ... that McGough''s talent was much more substantial than many of his long-forgotten detractors suspected. Oxford University Press Horace
Book SynopsisVery Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, InspiringHorace was one of the greatest poets during the reign of Augustus and is seen as a mark of cultural sophistication since this time. This Very Short Introduction examines how Horace''s poetry has exerted enormous influence but argues that it is best understood within the traditions of ancient literature. Llewellyn Morgan guides the reader through the dizzying vagaries of Horace''s biography, which reflects the political and social instability of the period. His poetry, and the life he artfully constructs and presents to us in it, engages both with the greatest crisis that Rome had ever faced, and its resolution by the first Emperor. Horace is Rome''s laureate, and through him we experience the anxieties and triumphs of his age. For posterity, Horace has served for a model of the good life, a promoter of enlightened retirement, but has also exemplified poetic artistry, and is the most creative manipulator of the Latin language, even among his remarkable contemporaries.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. Oxford University Press John Keats and the Perils of Posterity
Book SynopsisThis book begins with an account of the disease that killed Keats and contributed to the enduring myth that he was a doomed genius. Newspaper reports of Keats''s death and early ''tribute'' poems marking his demise form the substance of successive chapters, as do early attempts at researching and writing a biography of him. Keats''s would-be biographers included his publisher John Taylor whose biographical endeavours preceded Keats''s death, his mentor Leigh Hunt who devoted a chapter to ''Mr. Keats'' in his brilliant 1828 book Lord Byron and some of his Contemporaries, and his friend and collaborator Charles Brown whose draft life narrative remains a vital source of information. Poised to emigrate to New Zealand, Brown passed his script and source materials to Richard Monckton Milnes enjoining him to complete the work (Brown conceded that Milnes had an advantage in having not known Keats). This book explores Milnes''s efforts and success in publishing his Life, Letters, and Literary Remains of John Keats in 1848 --the first full-scale biography of the poet. Milnes''s book has proved a formative and enduring influence for all of Keats''s biographers, and the scale and resourcefulness of Milnes''s labours are explored in detail. The closing chapters trace the influence of Milnes''s book in the later nineteenth century, as new editions and fresh biographies appeared and Keats''s reputation grew. The volume devotes many pages to the life experiences of the two women who had been closest to Keats: his sister Fanny and his fiancé Fanny Brawne. It also reflects on the means by which the Keats-Shelley House in Rome, and Keats House in Hampstead, were secured as memorial sites.

Book SynopsisThe Royal Shakespeare Company''s choice of The Two Noble Kinsmen to open the Swan Theatre in 1986 demonstrated that this long-neglected play has at last come into its own as a stageworthy, humorous, and moving dramatization of the conflicting claims of love and friendship. It was first published in 1634 as `by the memorable worthies of their time, Mr John Fletcher, and Mr William Shakespeare, Gent'' and was probably first performed soon after the wedding of Princess Elizabeth, daughter of the company''s patron James I, to the Elector Palatine in February 1613. Oxford University Press Selected Poetry
Book SynopsisAlexander Pope (1688-1744) is regarded as the most important poet of the early eighteenth century. An invalid from infancy, Pope devoted his energies towards literature and achieved remarkable success with his first published work at the age of 21. A succession of brilliant poems followed, including An Essay on Criticism (1711), Windsor Forest (1713), and his masterpiece The Rape of the Lock (1712). A second period of great poetry was begun in 1728 with the appearance of the first Dunciad. All these works, which exhibit Pope''s astonishing human insight, his wide sympathies, and powers of social observation (displayed to greatest effect in his talent for satire), feature in this selection. In his introduction - an eloquent defence of Pope''s poetic practice - Pat Rogers argues that we must abandon our Romantic conception of poetry as a record of fleeting and subjective states if we are to understand Pope fully. Instead, we must see him as an accomplished practitioner of the poetry of

Book SynopsisThis volume offers 22 of the central pageants which make up York''s famous Corpus Christi cycle. The York cycle is the oldest and best-known of the English mystery cycles, and its depth and scope are reflected in the selection printed here. Included are plays on the Creation, the Fall of Man, the Incarnation, Passion, and Resurrection of Christ, and the Last Judgement. The Passion sequence has been expanded by six of the eight plays generally attributed to the great poetic dramatist known as the York Realist: the authentic text of these plays is not otherwise available in paperback. The University of Chicago Press HeardHoard
Book SynopsisWinner of the Alice Fay di Castagnola Award from the Poetry Society of America, this new collection of verse from Atsuro Riley offers a vivid weavework rendering and remembering an American place and its people.Trade Review"A landscape charged with the bright light of discernment, where emotions are stirred by rhythmic torsion and sonic density."--Julie Carr, judge, Alice Fay di Castagnola Award from the Poetry Society of America "Intoxicating. . . Sounds unheard and unrivaled since Atsuro Riley's acclaimed debut permeate Heard-Hoard. His elegant rhythms are atmospheric and robust, his neologisms transform the 'weed-embrangling snuffle-path, ' his vernacular is magical as 'dew-sparks galaxifying the crabgrass.' Amid each mesmerizing reading, like dancing to a good song for a good long time before truly hearing its lyrics, Heard-Hoard's remarkable stories crystallize; music becomes narrative. Atsuro Riley is an extraordinary poet. This book holds all the meanings of fantastic." --Terrance Hayes "Magnificently singular. If evocation of place, however pungent, were the main thing in Riley's work I wouldn't be very interested. But he's pursuing something a lot more ambitious, even abstract, that has deeply to do with, I almost want to say, sacred properties of language or language that could cast a spell against harm. He needs to make big sense; he has the deep confidence it takes to press language hard--not for self-amusement but to hear something he is desperate to hear." --Kay Ryan "The category of the 'mythic' has been much cheapened by overuse, but Atsuro Riley's Heard-Hoard restores the term to its original and originary power. The English language has rarely been so richly augmented in such little space." --Linda GregersonTable of ContentsCRACKLER CALL SUNDER SHED STRIPLINGS CHORUS: Petition MOTH CREEKTHROAT DUET CLARY CHORUS: Lobe STRANGER CAW CRAW GOLDHOUND CHORUS: Milk ORIGIN RHYTHM CHORUS: Seed ELEMENT CHORUS: Knell OAK LADDER CHORUS: Hankerer THICKET Notes Acknowledgments About the Author

The University of Chicago Press Mandible Wishbone Solvent
Book SynopsisA poetry collection that brings together word, image, and sound toreflect on fractured, fragmentary states of being. The poetry of Mandible Wishbone Solvent is situated in the space of bridges, fragmentary overlays, spectral reach, and the desire to keep reaching. Asiya Wadud's poems engage in this act, not to stake a claim or to fasten themselves, but to hold fragments together in order to offer possibilities for connection and extension. Throughout the collection lies an acknowledgment that any hold will drift, meander, and find new paths, with each separation making space for new entanglements. Drawing on a keen interest in tactility and ekphrasis, Wadud mines the repetition and extension that comes with any fractured state of existence and considers the nature of a residual and roving we. Following this selection of lyrical, ekphrastic, fragmented poems, the book concludes with two prose pieces that dwell on the concepts of isthmus and drift, respectively, which offer further Trade Review"Wadud is an astute interpreter of the world as a text. She shows us how the physical space rendered (un)available to those fleeing disaster is akin to the conceptual breadth lacking in our minds: 'If we cannot imagine a destitute journey, one born in an urgency that forces someone to voyage across borders, then it is in that moment that it is possible to empty water from jugs, again and again.' Wadud asks readers to match her connective brilliance by turning toward the world with a discerning eye, daring us to expand our minds and behold complexity. Her poems refuse to surrender to a reading that is easily impressed with her syntactic mosaic." * Harriet Books *“Wadud’s astounding new poems—many of them ekphrastic, all of them rigorously intricate, supersaturated—come across to me as both hard-edged and liminal. Enacting the dynamic relationship between figure and ground, center and edge, they frame the constant unfolding of meaning’s dimensions, its reverberations.” -- Mónica de la Torre, author of "Repetition Nineteen"“Composed of lyric poems, artwork, and prose, Mandible Wishbone Solvent distinguishes itself in both form and inquiry from much of the poetry currently published in the US. Wadud’s aesthetic, in which the lyric permutates, shifts, and merges with what flows through, is ethically aligned, as the prose makes clear, with shifting natural (rather than unyielding geopolitical) borders and with those who are ejected and must drift from place to place. Gorgeous, meditative, and spiritual, this immersive collection offers a terrain of lush language that seems precarious and vulnerable but is ultimately ungovernable, by border patrol or otherwise. ‘How can we become capacious in our rendering of the journey itself?’ Wadud asks. And this book is an example, with every gesture, of that elasticity and generosity.” -- Rosa Alcalá, Phoenix Poets consulting editor and author of "MyOther Tongue"Table of ContentsPart 1: Other ovals all along #221 ½ poised in hover hours seven desire lines one map disclose concentric centers the herring arrive as overture all excess bloomed then felled and green waters and green be a bridge over something 1.2 Part 2: Scant excess enclosed in a film Mandible Wishbone Solvent Shorn, treaded, red a symmetrical open plane, curve In the checkpoint I was all arms / all face the disc takes shape, dear cutlass Part 3: Microplane weights / accounts of first contact cobalt mirror image 1 cobalt mirror image 2 cobalt mirror image 3 cobalt mirror image 4 cobalt mirror image 5 cobalt mirror image 6 my mind makes for me a window then a door Part 4: The shroud can encase whatever we tell it Nearly Any Two Things Can Cohere Acknowledgments Drift: Against proximal distance from the center

Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group The Actors Art and Craft
Book SynopsisWilliam Esper, one of the leading acting teachers of our time, explains and extends Sanford Meisner's legendary technique, offering a clear, concrete, step-by-step approach to becoming a truly creative actor.Esper worked closely with Meisner for seventeen years and has spent decades developing his famous program for actor's training. The result is a rigorous system of exercises that builds a solid foundation of acting skills from the ground up, and that is flexible enough to be applied to any challenge an actor faces, from soap operas to Shakespeare. Co-writer Damon DiMarco, a former student of Esper's, spent over a year observing his mentor teaching first-year acting students. In this book he recreates that experience for us, allowing us to see how the progression of exercises works in practice. The Actor's Art and Craft vividly demonstrates that good training does not constrain actors' instincts—it frees them to create characters with truthful and compelling inner lives.
