Book SynopsisEccentric, sentimental and homespun, John Betjeman''s passions were mostly self-taught. He saw his country being devastated by war and progress and he waged a private war to save it. His only weapons were words - the poetry for which he is best known and, even more influential, the radio talks that first made him a phenomenon. From fervent pleas for provincial preservation to humoresques on eccentric vicars and his own personal demons, Betjeman''s talks combined wit, nostalgia and criticism in a way that touched the soul of his listeners from the 1930s to the 1950s. Now collected in book form for the first time, his broadcasts represent one of the most compelling archives of twentieth-century broadcasting, reawakening the modern reader to Betjeman''s unique perspective and the compelling magic of the golden age of wireless.Trade Review'A real treat ... • The Gorgeous Nothings

New Directions Publishing Corporation The Gorgeous Nothings

Book SynopsisThe Gorgeous Nothings is a pivotal book: the first full-color publication of Emily Dickinson’s complete envelope writings in facsimile from her visually stunning manuscripts, here in a deluxe, large-scale editionTrade Review"The Gorgeous Nothings claims our attention with a new Emily Dickinson. This edition itself is a work of art." -- Susan Howe"This exquisitely produced book [The Gorgeous Nothings]—lovingly curated by Bervin and Werner—allows you to encounter Emily Dickinson’s ‘envelope poems’ in full-color facsimile for the first time. It’s an experience suspended between reading and looking, of toggling between those two modes of perception, and it thoroughly refreshes both." -- Ben Lerner - The New Yorker"The Gorgeous Nothings works as both an engrossing visual treat and an affecting work of literature, giving us a keen and tangible sense of not only of Dickinson’s writing, but of how she wrote." -- Bookforum"The first and immediate shocks are in the words, with other, lingering, aftershocks following in the visual details of their settings. The great thing about [The Gorgeous Nothings] is, of course, that it gives us all of this, complete." -- Holland Cotter - The New York Times"This book is a rare gift for all poetry lovers." -- Craig Morgan Teicher - NPR"Visual poets around the world will soon be mining these endlessly suggestive fragments." -- Marjorie Perloff - Times Literary Supplement"The beautiful reproduction, on the pages of The Gorgeous Nothings, of what might seem only negligible scraps of waste paper brings us closer to the restlessness of the constantly thinking poet who, in her later years, repeatedly seized her pencil and a fragment of an envelope to write about the lowliest and the most exalted states of being." -- Helen Vendler - New Republic"We see from The Gorgeous Nothings the way [Dickinson's] art and life were not separate endeavors. Dickinson wrote poetry every time she addressed or received an envelope. Whenever there was paper around, she put quill or pencil right to it. Dickinson, master of paradox. started these un-conversations with nobody, and so many years after her death, now — in curled script, with their sweet, perfect Ms and half-formed Ys, unpublished and unseen until now — they speak to us. And they have so much yet to say." -- Brenda Shaughnessy - Los Angeles Times"This book is a testament to the lasting power of Dickinson’s work and a new insight into the way her work arose. It’s suitably gorgeous production and lyrical accompanying essays make it a treat for the eye and the mind. " -- The Australian"An insightful new volume, The Gorgeous Nothings, edited by Jen Bervin and Marta Werner, also provides a fascinating glimpse of Dickinson by assembling images documenting the poetry she scrawled on repurposed envelopes — envelopes that have themselves been elevated to a new sort of art." -- Chicago Tribune"For years, Dickinson critics have been looking for some kind of order among the manuscripts - some way to describe or theorize the 'filing system' that the poet left and we found. In The Gorgeous Nothings, instead, what's restored to these traces of the work is a sense of occasioned disorder. What's been preserved through time in her handwriting is the decision to occupy the page. The page becomes just as important as the writing." -- Los Angeles Review of Books"The Gorgeous Nothings is one of the most ambitious, important literary feats of the year. It’s stunning, revelatory, and it functions as a key text to Dickinson’s oeuvre: seeing it demands a tectonic shift in the way we read her, brings her back to us even more extremely idiosyncratic than we could have guessed." -- The Rumpus"[The Gorgeous Nothings] opens up an aspect of her craft that suggests she was, in the so-called late ecstatic period of her career, experimenting with creating texts in relation to the visual, spatial, and technological possibilities of her medium—composing in response to the confines of her writing world rather than despite it." -- Quarterly Conversation"The Gorgeous Nothings is proof that one of our most important poets can still amaze and teach us new thing about the practice of poetry." -- Tupelo Quarterly

Book SynopsisA poetic odyssey through the origins of the universe from one of Britain’s leading physicists. There raged a thumping cosmic ballyhoo, A manic dance - a rumpus to arouse The universe: of Higgs and W, Electrons, gluons, muons, Zs and taus… For centuries, poetry and science have been improbable, yet constant, bedfellows. Chaucer was an amateur astronomer; Milton broke bread with Galileo; and before turning to the arts Keats was a doctor. Meanwhile, scientific luminaries like Ada Lovelace and James Clerk Maxwell moonlighted as poets, composing verse between experiments and equations. Following in this tradition, theoretical physicist Joseph Conlon spins a dazzling intergalactic epic. Drawing on his own scientific expertise, Conlon reveals the origins of our universe, through two long-form poems - ‘The Elements’ and ‘The Galaxies’. Journeying from the Big Bang to the edges of our ever-expanding cosmos, Origins offers a delightful and revelatory adventure through contemporary physics.

Book SynopsisHere is the good stuff: poetry written by women that actually excites the thinking reader. This anthology, spanning work of the last 75 years, will broaden its readers' notions of what defines erotic poetry. For what is more intriguing, more satisfying than strong, self-assured writing? This groundbreaking anthology includes some of our most powerful women writersamong them Sharon Olds, Elizabeth Alexander, Anne Sexton, Dorianne Laux, Denise Levertov, Adrienne Rich, Lucille Clifton, and Louise Glück. These poets fully demonstrate that, far from being prurient, the erotic can permeate even the most mundane aspects of life, from reading a book to buying clothes. At the same time, the collection affirms the enormous meaningfulness of poetryits ability to express the inexpressible and to illuminate the most private and intimate of human experiences. The poets included here represent different ethnicities, geographies, social classes, and sexual preferences. The onlyTrade ReviewAll We Know of Pleasure: Poetic Erotica by Women was featured in the July 2019 issue of Cosmopolitan "All We Know of Pleasure: Poetic Erotica by Women is a breathtaking, eros driven, somatic poetic loveletter to women's bodies. So many of the poets who changed my life and writing live inside this book, and isn't that the truth of it, that poets give our desires and ecstasies back to us? I read it with my whole body, dripping with delight." —Lidia Yuknavitch, author of The Book of Joan “I absolutely loved these poems and devoured them in one night— like a lover who wants to take her time but can’t. They reminded me of what I first learned stealing Erica Jong off my mom’s shelf when I was a teenager: sex is the force that drives the world, and women writing about it, with all that energy, particularity, sensuality, and humor, is the powerful force that cracks the world open.” ―Jenna Blum, New York Times bestselling author of Those Who Save Us and The Lost Family "It's the verve of the lines in each of these poems that will electrify a reader. [. . .] Many of the poems play with the language of the erotic the same way lovers play, with a potent and beguiling imagination for both what's observed and experienced. [. . .] The anthology's poems tie love and passion together brilliantly, striking readers as much with their music and magic as their erotic energy." ―Apalachee ReviewTable of ContentsALL WE KNOW OF PLEASURE: Poetic Erotica by Women Edited and with an Introduction by Enid Shomer I. Noted American visionary, writer, speaker and television personality "Svendsen has really thought about the essence of things, the emotional machinery of living, and there is something really appealing about her crisp and almost visionary observations. She shifts the shadows to show light, shifts the light to show shadows. There is no cleverness, no word-magic, just the offering of some cold and warming eternal truths." Peter Thabit Jones editor Seventh Quarry Poetry Magazine, Wales "Nanna's poems are full of the charm of an innocent child, the passion of a feminine heart and the wisdom of the deepest soul. I am always opened and transformed by them. " Eva Sanner Swedish author and therapist

Book SynopsisOn 10 May 1936 the 27-year old Greek poet Yiannis Ritsos saw a newspaper photograph of a woman weeping over the body of her son, a Salonica tobacco-factory worker killed by police during a strike. Two days later the Communist Party newspaper Rizospastis published a long poem by Ritsos. Dedicated ''to the heroic workers of Salonika'' and drawing on the fourteenth-century Greek Orthodox Epitaphios Thrinos, the poem combines Mary''s lament at Christ''s tomb with popular Greek folk traditions of resurrection and Spring to create a universal lament sung by every bereaved mother ''who sits and mourns on the blood-stained street with her heart flayed, her wing broken.''

Book SynopsisFormally ambidextrous, teethed with wit and uncompromising dignity.' – Ocean VuongBread and Circus is a hybrid and palimpsestic memoir-in-verse: it combines poetry, photography and spectral imaging to explore the realities of economic necessity and marginal poverty through a personal lens.Examining the experience of the US urban Black community from a variety of perspectives, it draws heavily on Airea D. Matthews's archival research on Adam Smith, the eighteenth-century Scottish economist, as well as his magnum opus, The Wealth of Nations. As the perspective shifts from watchful child, to teacher, mother, writer and citizen, Bread and Circus asks what it is to have survived, indeed to have flourished, and at what cost.Trade Review'This book enacts, with tenderness and intelligence, an erudition that matches the capacious love of its ambitions. Formally ambidextrous, teethed with wit and uncompromising dignity, Matthews engages the archive as a breathing document, refusing to let history be done with itself, and thereby accomplishes what I love most about poetry— especially hers—that it lives, is living.' -- Ocean Vuong, author of On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous 'Matthews's writing is bold, innovative and complex.' * Washington Post *'Matthews is virtuosic, frantic, and darkly, very darkly, funny.' * New Yorker *'Discerning and significant' * Poetry Foundation *'Unflinching. . . Full of humane wisdom, this powerful volume forces readers to acknowledge systemic inequality.' * Publishers Weekly *'Matthews has earned a place in the accomplished company of Adrienne Rich and Muriel Rukeyser.' * Booklist *'When sinking into the work of Airea Matthews within Bread and Circus, "gratitude" is the word that most eagerly leaps to mind. I am grateful to be witness to a writer dismantling the boundaries of form, shape, and language, while not sacrificing any brilliance on the page. This is a stunning collection of work, which feels both ahead of its time and also abundantly on time.' -- Hanif Abdurraqip, author of The Little Devil in America 'From page to unrelenting page in this fierce and brilliant book, Airea Matthews shows us just how high the stakes of poetry should be. If you are not writing to save your life, you are not writing in Airea Matthews’ league.' -- Linda Gregerson, author of Canopy 'Roman poet Juvenal criticized a public distracted with free wheat and mindless entertainment. Toni Morrison said the point of racism is to keep us distracted from fully living our lives. With the genius and ferocity of mother love, Airea Matthews’s Bread and Circus shreds our expectations of what poems can be and do while clearing the air of the illusions that cloud our understanding of past, present, self and other. Lift the cover and breathe in the clarity concentrated on these pages." -- Gregory Pardlo, author of Digest
