Massey University Press Raiment: A Memoir

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisPioneering New Zealand poet Jan Kemp's memoir of her first 25 years is a vivid and frank account of growing up in the 1950s, and of university life in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It tracks from an innocent Waikato childhoodto the seedy flats of Auckland, where anarchic student life, drugs, sexual experimentation and a failing marriage could not keep her away from poetry. She became one of the few young women poets of her era to be allowed into the then male poet club.Weaving its own patterns and colours, Raiment shines a clear-eyed light on the heady, hedonistic hothouse of our literary community in the 1970s and reveals what it took, back then, to be an independent woman.

  • Ut Pictura Poesis Tradition & English

University Press of Southern Denmark Ut Pictura Poesis Tradition & English

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe parallel between poetry and painting harks back to Antiquity. It seemed obvious because both arts appeal to the intellect as well as the eye. In his Ars poetica (approx. 20 b.C.), Horace gave a terse formulation to the parallel: ut pictura poesis. Later critics dislodged what was in Horace just an obiter dictum, from its context, which in Horace referred to the appropriate distance of a beholder/reader from a picture/text. In English literature, the Neo-Classical cult of the Ancients straddling the year 1700 produced a spate of translations of Horace''s Ars poetica, and the translators'' accompanying comments suggest a wide range of idiosyncratic applications of the Latin poet''s maxim. One form of poetical expression of the parallel particularly favoured by English Neo-Classical poets was landscape description. However, landscapes'' had to fight opposition on two fronts, viz. the rigid Neo-Classical canon, and the prevalent mould of the description of outdoor scenery as seen in eg pastorals. This book traces the development of the maxim ut pictura poesis from a topos to a genre, viz. the Neo-Classical landscape poem. The typical poem belonging to that genre, which is given a detailed analysis in the pages of this book, contains a number of stock ingredients that meet the eyes of a beholder, who is also the narrator. Underneath the scene is a low-key social analogy, an intimation of a virtually unspoilt utopian society. At the same time, an undertone of anxiety for the preservation of this summum bonum is perceptible, and in James Thomson''s landscapes, dating from the 1720s, the reader feels the approach of the attitude to the items of natura naturata that we find in Wordsworth and Keats.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThere are creative writers and thinkers who are the origin of words and expressions that have a long life in history. One of them is Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig (1783-1872). He is perhaps best known internationally for his modern ideas about lifelong learning and a completely new type of school -- the folk high school for young people as well as adults -- that was to give people the possibility of developing freely and using their abilities for the benefit of their national community. In this book we feature a selection of his well-known hymns and songs. They are among the most powerful of his entire work marked by an artistic breadth that is immediately sensed. The present English translations -- the work of the poet and translator John Irons, in collaboration with the poet Klaus Høeck -- can and should be sung at everyday gatherings of people wishing to express themselves about what is most important in human existence: faith, hope and love.
