Meridian Czernowitz The life of Mary: 2015
Book SynopsisThe easiest thing to do in times of war is to hate others. The hardest thing is to reach an understanding. Even with your own people. But we must try, otherwise the war will never end. And to reach an understanding, you need to talk. With anyone, in any way and about anything. The main thing is not to lose humanity, that is, love and attention.

Karolinum,Nakladatelstvi Univerzity Karlovy,Czech Republic A Book of Fans
Book SynopsisThe National Gallery in Prague has in its collection a unique Japanese illustrated manuscript of ogi no soshi, a genre of waka poems illustrated in fan-shaped pictures, which blossomed from the late Muromachi to the early Edo period. Book of Fans, with 120 poems, is the largest such book extant in the world. This facsimile of an ancient illustrated manuscript of waka poetry reveals hitherto unknown aspects of Japanese traditional culture at the close of the sixteenth century, after the end of a century of destructive civil wars. The illustrated fans contain both classical waka poetry and poetry with close affinity to renga, haikai no renga, and Noh drama. The introductory text, from specialists on three continents, sheds new light on a literature and art that were instrumental in the renewal of the country in the Momoyama period. The literary quality of the translations and the beauty of the illustrations will be welcomed by both academic and general audiences around the world.

Museum Tusculanum Press 100 Danish Poems: From the Medieval Period to the
Book SynopsisText in English & Danish. Danish poetry is coloured by the distinctive tone of its language, shaped by the contours of the landscape, the rhythms of modern small-town life, and derives impressions from the luminous nights, the autumn storms, and the long dark winter months. This anthology provides a representative selection of 100 Danish poems by sixty-four poets, ranging from the medieval balladeers to poets already of international standing as well as younger poets. The edition is bilingual, allowing readers the possibility of reading the English and Danish texts side by side, and contains a lengthy introduction outlining the central developments in the history of Danish poetry, situating its most important oeuvres and themes within a larger international framework. The majority of the poems have not previously been made available in English. Published in collaboration with the University of Washington Press.

Zubaan Of Mothers and Others – Stories, Essays, Poems
Book Synopsis"Taking care of our women and children builds not just a generation but the nation itself," writes the Indian film star Shabana Azmi in her introduction to this unique volume. "We neglect mothers at our own peril, at the peril of society. If we are to lead as a nation, we must put our women and children first." Of Mothers and Others takes a step toward the fulfillment of this goal. A thought-provoking collection of stories, essays, and poems by a wide range of Indian writers, it challenges cozy assumptions about motherhood to reveal messy but affirming truths about this vital role and the way we experience it. These works portray motherhood from a variety of perspectives, illuminating its difficult, funny, and tender moments while addressing such topics as single motherhood, adopted children, surrogacy, bereavement, special needs children, grandmothers, and reluctant mothers. Motherhood emerges as far more than a state of being: it has profound implications, the contributors show, for personal identity, one's place in society, and the very nature of the self. Contributors to this book include Urvashi Butalia, Tishani Doshi, Shashi Deshpande, Namita Gokhale, Manju Kapur, and Bulbul Sharma.

The Chinese University Press Chinese Rhyme-Prose
Book SynopsisSelected as one of the sixty-five masterpieces for the UNESCO Collection of Representative WorksThe fu, or rhyme-prose, is a major poetic form in Chinese literature, most popular between the 2nd century b.c. and 6th century a.d. Unlike what is usually considered Chinese poetry, it is a hybrid of prose and rhymed verse, more expansive than the condensed lyrics, verging on what might be called Whitmanesque. The thirteen long poems included here are descriptions of and meditations on such subjects as mountains and abandoned cities, the sea and the wind, owls and goddesses, partings and the idle life.Burton Watson is universally considered the foremost English-language translator of classical Chinese and Japanese literature for the past five decades. Gary Snyder calls him a “great and graceful scholar,” and Robert Aitken has written that “Burton Watson is a superb translator because he knows what literature is.” Here his seemingly effortless translations are accompanied by a comprehensive introduction to the development and characteristics of the fu form, as well as excerpts from contemporary commentary on the genre. A path-breaking study of pre-modern Chinese literature and an essential volume for poetry readers, the book has been out of print for decades. For this edition, Lucas Klein has provided a preface that considers both the fu form and Watson’s extraordinary work as a whole.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Birth Of China Seen Through Poetry, The
Book SynopsisThe book introduces Chinese culture to readers of English, using poetry from the various periods rendered into English verse to bring back to life past Chinese society as it developed from about 1000 B.C to the form we see today. With China's increasing importance on the world stage today, many readers, no doubt, would want to learn more about its ancient culture. However, to learn about a culture from its history alone, especially one as long as that of China, is time-consuming and requires a historian's expert skill. This book offers the general reader a direct glimpse into the human core of it via the universally accessible channel of poetry. It provides an outline of Chinese history from prehistoric times to the present printed mostly on left-hand pages, accompanied on the right by a selection of Chinese poems of the corresponding periods translated into English verse by the author. The poems total about eighty in number and come mostly from the classical phase dating from around 1000 B.C. to 1200 A.D.Table of ContentsPoems of the Spring and Autumn Period (7); Of the Warring States (3); Of the Qin Dynasty (1); Of the Han Dynasty (10); Of Wei, Jin and the Northern and Southern Dynasties (9); Of the Tang Dynasty (30); Of Song and the Preceeding Five Dynasties (18); Of Modern Times (4); Time-Line and Maps; Original Poems in Chinese; Glossary of Chinese Names and Terms.

Shantarin Five Coimbra Poets
Book SynopsisFive Coimbra Poets takes historical contingency - the accident - as a pretext that would seem to unify profoundly different poetical voices from diverse centuries. Dom Dinis and Sá de Miranda are joined by the two 19th century poets who most marked the memory of literature which the city keeps alive and which the poems themselves keep alive of the city. Both Antero de Quental and Camilo Pessanha are, in this sense, crucial. The lyrical intensity of landscape and cityscape is alive as well in Fernando Assis Pacheco, who perhaps wrote the most penetrating and moving poems about Coimbra and its worlds, which were those of his childhood, adolescence and early manhood. Edited by Luís Quintais. Translation by Martin Earl and illustrations by Alya Kuznetsova.
