Pan Alp The Alps: A Bird's-eye View

    2 in stock

Book Synopsis"The Alps: A Bird's-Eye View" is a major project with completely new aerial photographs of the entire Alpine chain and up to date texts from experts in the world of geology; climate change; geography; Alpine tourism; natural environment; and, more. This is physically a big hardback book - 512 pages, 28cm wide, 37.5cm tall and weighing 4.95 kilos. The book has been compiled under the patronage of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) and includes a foreword by the Director-General of UNESCO, and introductions by Sir Chris Bonington and the Alpine Convention. The Alps are a single geographical and geological entity, yet they also constitute a culturally and climatically very diverse region. Besides the Mediterranean region, the Alps are the second largest ecosystem in Europe. The Alpine region today is home to 8 million people who speak eight major languages with many dialects and who are divided into eight nations. "The Alps: A Bird's-Eye View" is a stunning collection of new aerial photographs with 250 colour images (of which 200 are double spread) showing the Alpine region as it has never been seen before in one collection. From the air, professional photographer, mountaineer and pilot, Matevz Lenarcic has captured the diversity of the 1200 km between Monaco and Vienna. He reveals the variety of the region, including the contrasting Verdon gorges in France; the Mont Blanc glaciers; and, the granite walls of Bregaglia, the baroque ridges of the Dolomites and the light coloured limestone faces of the Julian Alps. Whilst the majority of the book is devoted to stunning photography, there is a significant contribution in text with chapters including the Alps as the birds see them; the myth about avalanches; landscapes of wine; geology; glacier changes; climate and expected changes; water, forests, flora & fauna; protected areas; landscape; population; and, tourism. The contributing authors are all specialists in their field and have been brought together to showcase the Alpine region in a complete work of photography and text.

    3 in stock

Book Synopsis"Beijing Portrait of a City" is a captivating collection of stories, essays, poetry and reminiscence by leading China authors, storytellers and academics, about a city they know from the inside. The book is the shared work of some of the city's finest writers who lead us through 'hutong' alleys, antique markets, artists' communities, gay bars, parks and the nostalgic streets of memory. They beguile with poems, amuse with camel anecdotes and thrill with two murder stories - one a genuine antique, the other a fictional contemporary. They take us back to the often-ignored Mongolian roots of the city and project forward to ask whether spectacular modern architecture will suffice to return Beijing to what it sees as its ancient place at the centre of the world. Compiled by Alexandra Pearson and Lucy Cavender, the book interweaves its written work with a collection of wry and telling photographs of different aspects of the city, creating a compelling portrait of Beijing. The contributors - including Zhu Wen, Adam Williams, Roy Kesey, Ma Jian, Alfreda Murck, Tim Clissold, Catherine Sampson, Peter Hessler, Karen Smith, Paul French, Michael Aldrich, Hong Ying and Rob Gifford, all published authors and experts in their field - have spent many years living in Beijing and know it from the inside. Their individual contributions combine to leave a highly original and unforgettable impression of one of the world's oldest and most fascinating cities.Trade ReviewA gloriously idiosyncratic mix of form and flavor that takes us into territory no guidebook can reach. There is immense substance here, but that is almost beside the point. This is not just a book to learn from; it is a treat to be savoured. (Jonathan Watts, Guardian)

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisIn 1872, Ismail Pasha, the khedive of Egypt, was the first to adopt the European custom of positioning heroic statues on public display as a symbolic message of the continuing authority of the ruling Muhammad Ali dynasty to which he belonged, but it was not until the early twentieth century and the determination of sculptor Mahmoud Mukhtar that such public art gained general acceptance, and today statues stand, ride, or sit in the streets, squares, and gardens of Cairo. Each sculpture adds a piece to the jigsaw of history spanning personalities and events that shaped the city and wider Egypt from 1805 to 1970, and here Cairo-based author Lesley Lababidi provides a unique perspective on Egyptian history through looking at more than thirty statues and monumental sculptures and the stories behind them. Between statues, she explores Cairo’s growth and its multidimensional identity, as manifested in the development and changing use of city space over the centuries, and examines the relationship of Cairo’s modern denizens with the landscapes, districts, palaces, archaeological sites, cafés, bridges, and gardens of their great and maddening city, the Mother of the World. Illustrated throughout with color photographs and archival pictures, Cairo’s Street Stories presents a unique and lively view of the history that fashioned the city’s streets and open spaces, and of the many and often unexpected uses to which its inventive inhabitants put them.

Book SynopsisThis is a unique and surprising photographic presentation that invites us to look and think again about what we are seeing. In "Re:viewing Egypt", Xavier Roy's breathtaking photographs of Egypt offer us a haunting vision of a country and its people. They are also a lesson in the art of photography itself, inviting us to experience images as metaphor, to extend our notions of reality. Roy draws us into Egypt's mystique, its scintillating waters, bucolic vistas, ruins, and places of worship. We observe the correspondences of shape and texture, perspective and repetition, light and shadow, and the vitality in the mundane and commonplace. A photograph of an acacia tree is juxtaposed with one of birds in flight, their formation and movement echoing the outline and feather-like aspect of the tree. The sea, both formless and metallic, can be an expression of the emotions of the woman who looks at it, or an image of ambivalence and uncertainty, of life and death. Each photograph is at once an offer of tranquility and a call to interpret. Gamal al-Ghitani's profoundly contemplative introduction is both inspiring and inspired by Roy's gallery of one hundred images, compelling us to observe Egypt's riches not as passive onlookers, but as engaged, reflective beings.

Book SynopsisThe map of a city is a palimpsest of its history. In Cairo, people, places, events, and even dates have lent their names to streets, squares, and bridges, only for those names often to be replaced, and then replaced again, and even again, as the city and the country imagine and reimagine their past. The resident, wandering boulevards and cul-de-sacs, finds signs; the reader, perusing novels and histories, finds references. Who were ?Abd el-Khaleq Sarwat Basha or Yusef el-Gindi that they should have streets named after them? Who was Nubar Basha and why did his street move from the north of the city to its center in 1933? Why do older maps show two squares called Bab el-Luq, while modern maps show none? Focusing on the part of the city created in the wake of Khedive Ismail’s command, given in 1867, to create a “Paris on the Nile” on the muddy lands between medieval Cairo and the river, A Field Guide to the Street Names of Cairo lists more than five hundred current and three hundred former appellations. Current street names are listed in alphabetical order, with an explanation of what each commemorates and when it was first recorded, followed by the same for its predecessors. An index allows the reader to trace streets whose names have disappeared or that have never achieved more than popular status. This is a book that will satisfy the curiosity of all, be they citizens, long-term residents, or visitors, who are fascinated by this most multi-layered of cities and wish to understand it better.Trade ReviewThis guidebook is anything but ordinary . . . rekindles memories and brings to life the forgotten streets, lanes, alleys, and passageways of Central Cairo. -- Lisa Kaaki * Arab News *Table of ContentsIntroduction Glossary of Terms List of street names Index of Former and Alternative Names Sources

  • Talisman Publishing India: Living in an Ornate World

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIndia, Living in an Ornate World explores as to why India is so rich in colour and ornamentation and why it has such a diversity of culture and architecture. There is still a large part of the population who prefer to continue living their traditional life in old-world settings. Their buildings reflect their long artistic and creative history. This can be seen in all levels of society. A modest dwelling in India can give as much an indication of this as can a palace. The lives of people in streets tend to be lived in public. The street is the extension of the house. A large part of this life is carried out on the streets and is often shared with many different animals due to the Hindu love of them. The photographs in this book aimed to catch many of these scenes.

Book SynopsisAs Singapore is constantly reinventing itself, this book is a timely publication. After all, anything on contemporary Singapore that doesn't include the Marina Bay Sands' iconic towers, Gardens by the Bay and the new Business District extension is hopelessly out of date. Yet, this book is much more than a round-up of Singapore's new urban cityscapes. Rather, it traces the development of the city-state, showing how so much of the old has been retained and celebrated alongside the new. In addition to an assessment of the downtown core, chapters include an analysis of Singapore's eco credentials as it strives to become a truly green City within a Garden; how its varied population contributes to its success (and how the various peoples came to its shores); a sober reflection on World War II and Occupation, and reminders thereof; a showcase of all things stylishly Singaporean; and finally, a short look back in time with a selection of evocative black-and-white photographs to Singapore's early days as a colonial city.Beautifully photographed by Danish photographer, Jacob Termansen, with insightful texts by Kim Inglis, this is a must-have for anybody interested in the history and culture of Singapore.Table of Contents1) The Making of a Modern Nation2) The Garden City3) East Meets West4) War and Peace5) Singapore Style6) This was Singapore
