Book SynopsisImagine a place of unspoiled beaches, windswept dunes, and dramatic natural beauty. A place free of traffic lights and blaring commercial come-ons. A place whose rich historical heritage is visible everywhere—from the antiques-shop windows filled with handmade baskets and scrimshawed ivories to the spare, shingle-clad houses that coexist harmoniously with the surrounding land- and seascapes. Imagine a place designed, by man and nature, to relax and restore you. Nantucket Island is that place. Thirty miles off Cape Cod, Nantucket is both geographically isolated and—as an internationally regarded vacation resort—culturally sophisticated. Nantucketers are rightly proud of a manner of living that couples the casual comforts of small-town life with an urbane sense of glamour, taste, and style. In this handsomely illustrated book, longtime Nantucket residents Leslie Linsley and Terry Pommett give you an insider’s look at the on-island lifestyle: the restored historic homes of Nantucket town and ’Sconset village, the appealingly humble beachfront cottages that dot the island’s shoreline, and the beautifully tended gardens—formal and informal—that grace Nantucket’s private houses and public buildings. More than 200 color photos document the other attractions—panoramic views, home-grown handicrafts, seasonal celebrations —that make Nantucket such a rewarding place to spend a day, a summer, or a lifetim

  • Eland Publishing Ltd Gavin Maxwell: A Life

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisGavin Maxwell was a romantic, self-destructive adventurer, brave and handsome, with a deep sympathy for the underdog, a wonderfully curious mind and a dogged commitment to discovering the truth. It was said of him that he was loved by women, had sex with men but his emotional life was ruled by animals. His father died in the trenches in the year of his birth, so he and his brothers enjoyed a wonderfully carefree childhood, living in passionate proximity to their mother, the widowed daughter of the Duke of Northumberland, in an isolated house on the south-west coast of Scotland. He became one of the most brilliant and quixotic of British travel-writers, who wrote about Iraq (where he travelled with Wilfrid Thesiger in 1956 and acquired his first otter), Sicily (where he befriended both Communist peasants and Mafia hitmen) and Morocco (where he spent six years chronicling the rise and fall of a Berber dynasty). But he would become even more famous for his trilogy of books set in the north-west coast of Scotland, which was a true fulfilment of his affinity with nature and a love of wild things, most especially otters. Despite the success of Ring of Bright Water, The Rocks Remain and Raven Seek thy Brother, the vast bulk of his life remained a closely guarded secret. He was by turns a shark-hunter, a wartime secret agent, portrait-painter, racing car-driver, naturalist, poet and a social renegade. Often poised on the edge of bankruptcy he could also be insanely profligate and generous.Trade Review'Totally absorbing, wonderfully written. David Attenborough; 'Here is a life woven from the stuff of high romance, a tragic and fascinating quest. Book SynopsisThis full-colour kaleidoscope of over 150 photographs by one of North America's leading photographers evokes a pre-Celtic Tiger Ireland, recording a world on the cusp of radical change: a time-capsule of personalities and landscapes, professions and activities, caught in the amber of the camera's eye. Beginning with an Irish assignment from British Vogue in 1969, Woods' interest deepened with marriages to two Irish husbands, and she developed an abiding love for the people and places documented in subsequent decades. This Valentine to Ireland is now gathered into one resonant volume of images and visual epiphanies. The work ranges across the Irish countryside. Departing from Dublin and Wicklow, it extends to Roscommon and the Shannon estuary, recording street scenes, Travellers, the hunt, cattle marts and pub, cottage and country-house interiors. Six of the eight photo-essays focus on leading personalities: Garech Brown of Luggala, founder of Claddagh Records; the late Desmond FitzGerald, last knight of Glin; Marina Guinness, chatelaine; the late J.P. From Dickens, Dr Johnson, Tower Bridge, and the Shard to the Diamond Jubilee, Wimbledon, pigeons, and jellied eels, all London life is here. • Papadakis Spirit of the Amazon: The Indigenous Tribes of

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book includes a foreword by Sting, plus an introduction and endorsements by Sir Ghillean Prance, the British botanist and ecologist, and John Hemming, the historian and explorer and expert on Incas and indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin. Sue Cunningham's photography has been published all over the world. She has exhibited in the UK, Switzerland, Brazil, USA and Japan. The heart of the Amazon is inaccessible and inhospitable, and contact with the tribes is something rarely experienced by outsiders. This book was only made possible because of Sue Cunningham's relationship with the Xingu tribes, developed over the past 30 years. The book highlights the resilience of the indigenous people against deforestation, dams and pollution. Photojournalist Sue Cunningham and writer Patrick Cunningham celebrate cultural difference and call for better stewardship of the world. Sue's stunning photographs demonstrate the spiritual and material value of the Xingu tribes to all mankind; they keep the forest alive and they protect the climate of South America and the rest of the world. Their spiritual connection to their environment and the wider Earth shows us an alternative way to connect to the natural richness of the planet, built on foundations completely different from those of global materialism. During their expedition by boat, the authors followed the course of the Xingu river, a tributary of the Amazon, travelling 2500 km through the heart of Brazil. They visited 48 tribal villages in this remote part of the Amazon, accessible only by small plane or by negotiating the rapids of the Xingu. This is the story of the tribal communities they met; their daily lives, their connection to the land and to the rivers, the threats which pervade each day of their lives. It is also a validation of their importance to the rest of the world; why these small, remote and often secretive indigenous communities are so important to our own lives and to our shared planet. It is a celebration of their vibrant cultures, their rituals and their rites of passage, of cultures very different from each other, but with a shared spiritual basis which respects the trees, the rivers and the rain. And it is a call for the world to protect them, their lands and their forests and rivers from the destruction which our avaricious greed for natural resources drives ever closer and deeper into their realm.Trade ReviewIncredibly it has been almost 30 years since Sue Cunningham and I first shared a visit to the Xingu. We were younger then, and filled with hope for the future of our Kayap friends. We were encouraged by the recently-adopted 1988 Brazilian constitution which explicitly recognised the rights of all of Brazil's indigenous peoples. Great things have been achieved since then. By setting up the Rainforest Foundation we persuaded the Brazilian government to establish the Menkragnoti Indigenous Territory, which is twice the size of Wales, back in 1991. By 2012 deforestation had fallen to its lowest level since records began, and nowadays there are many well-qualified indigenous teachers, nurses, even lawyers and town councillors, all working for their communities. Our indigenous friends are more confident in the strength of their culture and in their own spiritual values. Sue and Patrick have never ceased to fight for the rights of indigenous people by dedicating their time to raise public awareness of the challenges facing them, and working tirelessly to support the Indians at every step. This book charts the changes in the lives and fortunes of these incredible people. It focuses on their humanity and on their individuality. It shows that they are people, just as we are people, and not simply exotic objects. It tells us that they have a fundamental right to our respect, and that we have an obligation to protect their land, their environment and their chosen way of life. But the book is a timely reminder that Brazil's indigenous people live under constant threat. In the last five years deforestation has crept upwards again, reaching dangerous levels which threaten to undermine global efforts to curb climate change, and recently the politics of Brazil has turned against its indigenous peoples. Demarcation of their lands has ground to a halt and there are powerful moves to remove many of the rights recognised in the 1988 constitution.--Sting "This book charts the changes in the lives and fortunes of these incredible people. It focuses on their humanity and on their individuality. It shows that they are people, just as we are people, and not simply exotic objects. It tells us that they have a fundamental right to our respect, and that we have an obligation to protect their land, their environment and their chosen way of life."--Sting As someone who has travelled extensively in the Amazon forest and amongst Its native peoples this book brings back so many memories for me. The Cunningham's journey down the Xingu River was no easy task, but they achieved and recount here an epic journey that so vividly describes their adventures, the Amazon rainforest and particularly the inhabitants with whom they have such a special relationship.--Professor Sir Ghillean Prance FRS Sue and Patrick Cunningham's vision of the indigenous peoples of the Xingu river basin is unique in many ways. They were the first outsiders ever to take six months descending the full length of that mighty Amazon tributary. On that epic and many other journeys, they had permission to visit almost fifty villages, of a wide variety of tribes. They were welcomed as old friends, so could join in everyday life, shamanic rituals, and spectacular festivals. They were accomplished photographers and observers. And they were seeing Brazilian Indians at a fascinating time in their transition from traditional to more modern society.--Dr John Hemming CMG

Book SynopsisThe North Downs are a range of hills that run east-west from the south-east tip of England, at Dover in Kent, to Farnham in Surrey. They skirt the southern edge of London, so for a long time have offered Londoners beautiful countryside to escape to, or for a home to commute to work from. A hundred years ago, they were still quite remote, but London has grown, spreading onto Downland, and rail and road links have ensured that the many towns across the hills have also grown substantially in size. Despite development there is still a lot of unspoilt landscape, from farmland, to deep woods, to open grassland ridges with fantastic views across the weald of Surrey and Kent; and it is these places that are the focus of this book. North Downs Landscapes takes the reader on a journey from the White Cliffs of Dover, through the rolling Kentish farm land with its open vistas and small villages, across the River Medway at Rochester, with its’ castle and cathedral, on to the wooded ridges past Sevenoaks, into Surrey and across the River Mole to explore Leith Hill, then to Guildford and the River Wey, and over the Hogs Back to Farnham. The core of this book are beautiful full-page colour photographs illustrating the beauty and distinctive landscapes of the Downs. The text explores the history, geography, geology and ecology of the countryside and some of its towns and villages. Together photographs and text capture the character and atmosphere of a special part of the British Isles.Trade ReviewIt will increase everyone’s little bit of knowledge about Kent and Surrey’s background – you might think you know your county – think again. And if you do buy this book (and I do recommend it) you will find yourself going back to it again and again because… the images of towns and villages, rolling hills and woods, wild flowers, fruits, and butterflies, and, yes, even a motorway are exceptionally reviewable. * Kent History Journal *
