Book Synopsis"...a charming, beautiful and extremely aesthetically pleasing travelogue." —Roger Lush, Amateur Photographer “Stunning photography.” —Outdoor Photography What does winter look like in the far north? According to the clichés: as dark and cold as a refrigerator. And yet it is precisely in these wintertime months that photographer Michael Königshofer picks up his camera and heads to the Arctic Circle! In this rich and original photo book, the Scandinavia-savvy Austrian captures much more than the clichéd images of the Northern Lights. With an eye on the coexistence of nature and culture, Königshofer explores how lives are lived in this intense and extreme environment, from the traditional ivory carver in Greenland to the ice surfer in the North Cape. The result is an authentic portrait of Scandinavian life, showing a whole new side to life up north. Text in English and German.Trade Review"Cold enough for you? If not, you could always go on a trip with Michael Konigshofer who has a real penchant for a northern winter. Between 2016 and 2020 he visited Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands (Scotland, too, to be fair) in a bid to experience – and capture in photographs – a true northern winter." - Teddy Jamieson, Herald Scotland"Showcasing the natural wonders - alongside the people that inhabit them - of the far North (including Scotland), this is a charming, beautiful and extremely aesthetically pleasing travelogue." - Roger Lush, Amateur Photographer"In spite of claiming to be always cold in spite of multiple socks and the thermostat pushed as far as it can go, Austrian photographer Michael Konigshofer finds it hard to resist the allure of a northern European winter." - Strong Words“Stunning photography” - Outdoor Photography

Autumn will warm and enlighten anyone who opens their eyes to it' The TimesAutumn begins with a letter Karl Ove Knausgaard writes to his unborn daughter. The world feels repainted' New York TimesTrade ReviewDiverse and delightful… These sharp little essays capture the wonder of things with photographic immediacy… This is an inspiring, surprising collection * The Times *Brilliantly conveys the sense you get, as a prospective parent, that the world is brand new… It’s all beautifully done. -- William Leith * Evening Standard *In Autumn, a lyrical cabaret beside the grand opera of the My Struggle books, taboo memories and forbidden feelings disrupt the grown-up project of a compendium of fatherly wisdom... Book SynopsisSummer is the fourth volume of the Seasons quartet, a collection of short prose and diaries written by a father for his youngest daughter, with stunning artwork by Anselm Kiefer.'Knausgaard unearths the mysteries of the commonplace' Observer In Summer, Karl Ove Knausgaard writes about long days full of sunlight, eating ice cream with his children, lawn sprinklers and ladybirds. He experiments with the beginnings of a novel and keeps a diary in which the small events of his family's life are recorded. Against a canvas of memories, longings, and experiences of art and literature, he searches for the meaning of moments as they pass us by.'Wondrous... There are blissful glimpses of nature's mystery and balance' Financial TimesTrade Review[Knausgaard is] endlessly curious about the world… [and] his perceptions of it are so particular. * Observer *[Knausgaard] brings it all alive in his prose, makes it shimmer. Whether intellectually parsing for meaning or playing this existential video game of political turmoil, horror, and heartache, his writing flows easily from quiet, thoughtful engagement to ecstatic communion with the world… He may be done with this quartet, the My Struggle series, and autofiction altogether, but I still want more of it. That kind of passionate literary intimacy is rare. * Los Angeles Review of Books *Engrossing… Knausgaard’s prose evokes universal themes from intimate specifics. * Publishers Weekly *Knausgaard closes his quartet of autobiographical meditations on the seasons in an appropriately verdant and optimistic fashion. . . While interrogating the nature of storytelling, he’s priming readers for a powerful, straightforward yarn. Breezy reading that’s also a commentary on breezy reading. Some trick. * Kirkus *

  • Sebastião Salgado. Amazônia

    Taschen GmbH Sebastião Salgado. Amazônia

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSebastião Salgado traveled the Brazilian Amazon and photographed the unparalleled beauty of this extraordinary region for six years: the forest, the rivers, the mountains, the people who live there—an irreplaceable treasure of humanity. In the book’s foreword Salgado writes: “For me, it is the last frontier, a mysterious universe of its own, where the immense power of nature can be felt as nowhere else on earth. Here is a forest stretching to infinity that contains one-tenth of all living plant and animal species, the world’s largest single natural laboratory.” Salgado visited a dozen indigenous tribes that exist in small communities scattered across the largest tropical rainforest in the world. He documented the daily life of the Yanomami, the Asháninka, the Yawanawá, the Suruwahá, the Zo’é, the Kuikuro, the Waurá, the Kamayurá, the Korubo, the Marubo, the Awá, and the Macuxi—their warm family bonds, their hunting and fishing, the manner in which they prepare and share meals, their marvelous talent for painting their faces and bodies, the significance of their shamans, and their dances and rituals. Sebastião Salgado has dedicated this book to the indigenous peoples of Brazil’s Amazon region: “My wish, with all my heart, with all my energy, with all the passion I possess, is that in 50 years’ time this book will not resemble a record of a lost world. Amazônia must live on.” INSTITUTO TERRA Founded in 1998 at Aimorés in the state of Minas Gerais, Instituto Terra is the culmination of Lélia Wanick Salgado and Sebastião Salgado’s lifelong activism and work as cultural documentarians. Through a scientific program of planting and raising saplings, the organization has performed a miraculous reforestation of the once infertile region and furthered the Salgados’ mission of reversing the damage done to our planet. TASCHEN is proud to reach carbon zero status through our continued partnership. Also available in a Collector's Edition and four Art Editions, each with a signed silver gelatin print, all with a book stand designed by Renzo Piano.Trade Review“Sebastião Salgado has spent more than two decades documenting the complex lives of Indigenous Amazonian people as they stand strong in the face of unrelenting colonial forces.” * Scientific American *“Superb….. Salgado mythologises the landscapes he photographs.” * theguardian.com *“A revealing and intimate study.” * thisiscolossal.com *“If one of the purposes of art is to help us see the world around us, then Sebastião Salgado’s photographs in Amazônia does so in the most spectacular way imaginable.” * spectator.co.uk *“In over 500 pages of stunning and captivating photos and text, Salgado delivers a piercing look at a lost world, still surviving but under immense threat.” * ecowatch.com *“If Salgado’s book Genesis was a quest to document places on Earth unblemished by humans, his latest volume Amazônia speaks to the idea that humans can live on this planet in a sustainable way, through profiling the forest’s indigenous communities, and offering fresh perspectives on the forest itself.” * CNN.com *“Amazônia, a stunning succession of black and white panoramas. Looking through his images, I feel the same awe I would feel in front of sublime paintings: serpentine rivers flow through seemingly limitless forests, sheer-sided rock escarpments vanish into skies, and apocalyptic clouds loom over wispy treetops.” * The Guardian *“Capture[s] the sheer scale of the still-unspoiled heart of this wilderness.” * The Guardian *“[Sebastião Salgado] spent six years capturing the Amazon rainforest and its Indigenous inhabitants, making a case for their ecological and cultural importance.” * The New York Times *“This book is a powerfully persuasive voice in an increasingly urgent campaign.” * The Times *“An exceptional book on the beauty of this almost lost paradise, threatened by a galloping deforestation.” * Le Soir *“This book is dedicated to the indigenous peoples of Brazil’s Amazon region. It is a celebration of the survival of their cultures, customs, and languages. It is also a tribute to their role as the guardians of the beauty, natural resources, and biodiversity of the planet’s largest rainforest in the face of unrelenting assault by the outside world. We are eternally grateful to them for allowing us to share their lives.” * Sebastião Salgado and Lélia Wanick Salgado *

Book SynopsisAs read on BBC Radio 4 'Book of the Week'Shortlisted for the Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year AwardLonglisted for the RSL Ondaatje Prize'Sherman’s is a special book. Every sentence, every thought she has, every question she asks, every detail she notices, offers something. The Bells of Old Tokyo is a gift . . . It is a masterpiece.' - The SpectatorA hauntingly original book about Tokyo and the Japanese relationship to time, memory and history. For over 300 years, Japan closed itself to outsiders, developing a remarkable and unique culture. During its period of isolation, the inhabitants of the city of Edo, later known as Tokyo, relied on its public bells to tell the time.In her remarkable book, Anna Sherman tells of her search for the bells of Edo, exploring the city of Tokyo and its inhabitants and the individual and particular relationship of Japanese culture - and the Japanese language - to time, tradition, memory, impermanence and history.Through Sherman’s journeys around the city, The Bells of Old Tokyo presents a series of hauntingly memorable voices in the labyrinth of the Japanese capital: An aristocrat plays in the sea of ashes left by the Allied firebombing of 1945. A scientist builds the most accurate clock in the world, a clock that will not lose a second in five billion years. A sculptor eats his father’s ashes while the head of the house of Tokugawa reflects on the destruction of his grandfather’s city.'This mesmerising cultural history explores the neighbourhoods where Tokyo's bells once rang . . . As our own locked-down days squeeze and elongate, Tokyo time feels strangely familiar.’ - Daily TelegraphTrade ReviewSherman’s is a special book. Every sentence, every thought she has, every question she asks, every detail she notices, offers something. The Bells of Old Tokyo is a gift . . . It is a masterpiece. * Spectator *[Sherman's] perambulations around the bells yield fascinating, frequently moving narratives . . . In Tokyo's every nook and cranny, she finds the possibility of something profound, something elevating. * New Statesman *A subtle, beautifully written meditation . . . Profoundly moving . . . The bells of old Tokyo are no longer heard, but this lyrical yet serious work deserves ringing endorsement. * Literary Review *A completely extraordinary book, unlike anything I have read before. At once modest in tone and vast in scale and ambition . . . Delicately wrought, precise, lucid and strange as a dream. -- Olivia LaingBeautifully written, surprising, original and humane . . . A truly stunning debut. -- Joanna KavennaThe Bells of Old Tokyo is part personal memoir, part cultural history, but wholly unique . . . It is the best book I have read about Tokyo written this century, and deserves to take its place alongside the works of Donald Richie, Edward Seidensticker and Paul Waley as one of the great interpretations of this great city. -- David PeaceDelightful . . . Bells is unknowable, but brilliantly so. * Japan Times *Good travel writing is often hard to come by - it’s a delicate balance of bringing a destination to life while also informing of its noteworthy aspects, but Anna Sherman does so flawlessly. * Japan Today *In her haunting, beautiful debut travel narrative, Anna Sherman takes the reader along on her quest to find the bells of old Tokyo, illuminating a lost world hidden in plain sight . . . The Bells of Old Tokyo paints an intricate, rich portrait of this labyrinthine city . . . as much a history of Japan as it is a travelogue. * South China Morning Post *Only a handful could match Sherman for respectful curiosity, detailed knowledge and sensitivity to her surroundings. * Canberra Times *It is very possible – refreshingly, exhilaratingly, possible – for a great book to exist that is all at once a memoir, a travelogue, a history book, and an examination of what defines a culture and its people: their customs, arts, architecture, habits, and priorities. That is what The Bells of Old Tokyo is. It is also a masterwork. * Books and Bao *A staggering reassembling of an ancient city turned neon metropolis . . . An exceptional and exceptionally original piece of writing. * The Big Smoke *A fascinating portrait of a city and its people, epic and intimate at the same time * The Weekly Times *A reading treasure . . . A work of literary art . . . Magnificent both in its content and in the exquisite, lyrical writing of its author. * Cape Times *Sherman’s writing is elegant and accessible, and the story of Tokyo quickly becomes the story of time itself. -- Best Books of Summer 2019 * Uproxx *A beautifully written evocation of a place and a philosophical inquiry into the nature of time itself. An astonishing gift. * Shelf Awareness *A tour-de-force mapping, in four dimensions, of the amazing place we call “Tokyo.” I realized I barely know the city . . . So much is dealt with so beautifully – Mishima, the 1945 firebombs, the tangle that is Shinjuku . . . Wonderful . . . -- Liza DalbyAn enchanting read, drawing you into Sherman’s Tokyo world in a way that makes you wonder why you shouldn’t fly there right this minute, with her book as the only guide you’ll ever need. -- Xu Xi

Through the changing seasons, on city streets and on buses, in parks and cafes, Miranda notices things: moments between friends, the interactions of strangers, children delighting in the world around them, the quiet melancholy of lost items on the pavement.Accompanied by stunning watercolour illustrations from Luci Power, Miranda's poetic vignettes take us on journeys of discovery and share with us the joy of stopping to notice. Book SynopsisThe first volume in Tim Robinson's phenomenal Connemara Trilogy - which Robert Macfarlane has called 'One of the most remarkable non-fiction projects undertaken in English'. In its landscape, history and folklore, Connemara is a singular region: ill-defined geographically, and yet unmistakably a place apart from the rest of Ireland. Tim Robinson, who established himself as Ireland's most brilliant living non-fiction writer with the two-volume Stones of Aran, moved from Aran to Connemara nearly twenty years ago. This book is the result of his extraordinary engagement with the mountains, bogs and shorelines of the region, and with its folklore and its often terrible history: a work as beautiful and surprising as the place it attempts to describe.Chosen as a book of the year by Iain Sinclair, Robert Macfarlane and Colm Tóibín'One of the greatest writers of lands ... Whether you want to know more about florals or simply have an appreciation for the exquisite, Jamie Beck’s book is a treasure trove of inspiration.”—Chloé Crane-Leroux, author, photographer, and tastemaker“Jamie is, without a doubt, one of the most talented photographers of our time. If you’re looking for a beautiful book that instantly transports you to Provence, this is it!”—Gaby Dalkin, New York Times bestselling author and TV host“Jamie’s newest creation, The Flowers of Provence, is a delightful escape to the French countryside for those of us who have a love affair with flowers. The book is a visual feast of fragrant blooms I can nearly smell through each page.”—Jenny Cipoletti, writer, designer, and content creator“Jamie Beck’s The Flowers of Provence awakens the pure, bordering-on-spiritual awe of nature that exists within each of us. It’s a salve for the mind and the soul.”—Eva Kosmas Flores, author and photographer“To open the pages of Jamie’s book is to enter a world of natural beauty, ethereal dreams, and photographic inspiration. Her portraits and still life photos of flowers will transport you to Provence. This book is where I want to live when the world around me feels chaotic.”—Aran Goyoaga, creator of Cannelle et Vanille and three-time James Beard Award finalist“Jamie’s lush floral photography captures the essence of the natural beauty of Provence, but her images also nod reverentially to the art historical cannon, with her decadent Dutch Renaissance–style still lifes and tableaux that animate beloved paintings like Monet’s famous Poppy Field. This book is a seduction of the senses and the intellect.”—Fanny Singer, author of Always Home and founder of Permanent Collection

Book SynopsisThe second volume in Tim Robinson''s phenomenal Connemara Trilogy - which Robert Macfarlane has called ''One of the most remarkable non-fiction projects undertaken in English''. The first volume of Tim Robinson''s Connemara trilogy, Listening to the Wind, covered Robinson''s home territory of Roundstone and environs. The Last Pool of Darkness moves into wilder territory: the fjords, cliffs, hills and islands of north-west Connemara, a place that Wittgenstein, who lived on his own in a cottage there for a time, called ''the last pool of darkness in Europe''. Again combining his polymathic knowledge of Connemara''s natural history, human history, folklore and topography with his own unsurpassable artistry as a writer, Tim Robinson has produced another classic.A native of Yorkshire, Tim Robinson moved to the Aran Islands in 1972. His books include the celebrated two-volume Stones of Aran. Since 1984 he has lived in Roundstone, Connemara.''The Proust & Ruskin of modern place-writing, deep-mapper of Irish landscapes, visionary thinker, and human of exceptional intellectual generosity & kindness. Book SynopsisThe triumphant conclusion to Tim Robinson''s extraordinary Connemara trilogy, which Robert Macfarlane has called ''one of the most remarkable non-fiction projects undertaken in English''. Robinson writes about the people, places and history of south Connemara - one of Ireland''s last Gaelic-speaking enclaves - with the encyclopaedic knowledge of a cartographer and the grace of a born writer. From the man who has been praised in the highest terms by Joseph O''Connor (''One of contemporary Ireland''s finest literary stylists''''), John Burnside (''one of the finest of contemporary prose stylists''), Fintan O''Toole (''Simply one of the best non-fiction prose writers currently at work'') and Giles Foden (''an indubitable classic''), among many others, this is one of the publishing events of 2011 and the conclusion of one of the great literary projects of our time.''One of the greatest writers of lands ... Hunter Davies has lived within a stone's throw of Hampstead Heath for more than sixty years and has walked on it nearly every day of his London life. For him, it is not just a place of recreation and relaxation but also a treasure-house of memories and emotions. In The Heath, he visits all parts of this, the largest area of common land in Britain's capital city: from Kenwood House to the Vale of Health, from Parliament Hill to Boudicca's Mound, and from the Ladies Bathing Pond to the fabulous pergola. As he walks, Davies talks to the diverse array of individuals who frequent the Heath: regulars; visitors; dog walkers; stall holders at the weekly farmer's market; famous faces having their morning stroll; twenty-first-century hippies spreading peace, love and happiness.Trade ReviewAn affectionate book which blends personal anecdote, history and interviews with key players from The Heath and Hampstead Society and City of London Corporation, to swimmers and dog walkers * Ham & High *A love letter, both to the Heath and to his late wife...
