Book SynopsisThis is the loose-leaf version of Kinetic Anatomy, Fourth Edition, which offers students a less expensive, printed version of the text.Kinetic Anatomy, Fourth Edition With HKPropel Access, gives students a firm concept of musculoskeletal anatomy by systematically assembling each component of the human body. Layer by layer, readers will study bones, ligaments, joints, and muscles as well as the nerves and blood vessels that supply these muscles that are essential for movement. With full-color visual aids and activities that invite readers to apply their understanding of structural anatomy to their own lives, the fourth edition is ideally suited for students studying physical activity because it explores how the structural anatomy of the human body facilitates movement. Part I of the text introduces the basics of structural anatomy. It describes how bones, joints, muscles, nerves, and other essential anatomy work together to allow for fundamental movement. Part II details the anatomy of the upper extremity region, including the shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand. Part III of the text explores the anatomy of the head, spinal column, thorax, and pelvis. These chapters include unique coverage not found in other anatomy texts, explaining how the brain, heart, and lungs—as the power centers of the nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems—affect movement. Part IV discusses the anatomy of the lower extremity region: the hip, thigh, knee, lower leg, ankle, and foot. Parts II, III, and IV each end with a summary table that offers a quick reference for the components of the body region featured in that part.Kinetic Anatomy, Fourth Edition, contains nearly 400 photos, illustrations, and infographics to help readers visualize structural anatomy and engage with their coursework. Throughout the book, Hands On exercises instruct readers to physically identify anatomical structures on themselves or on a partner, and Focus On sidebars illustrate circumstances in everyday activity that relate to the specific anatomical structures in the text. Pop quizzes provide readers an opportunity to strengthen their clinical reasoning skills by asking them to identify the muscles shown in the accompanying photo. The fourth edition is further enhanced with the addition of new online learning tools —all of which can be assigned, and progress tracked, by instructors directly through HKPropel: Anatomy labeling and coloring sheets offer students nearly 100 interactive activities that test their knowledge of anatomical structures and function. Learning activities; true-false, multiple-choice, and fill-in-the-blank questions; and functional movement exercises ensure students have a firm grasp of key points from each chapter. Chapter quizzes (assessments) may also be assigned; these are automatically graded to test comprehension of critical concepts. Readers of Kinetic Anatomy, Fourth Edition, will learn what structures are involved in movement and how those structures should function, allowing them to identify problems and correct them to enhance physical activity. Anyone interested in just how their body functions during physical activity and how certain overuse or misuse can affect certain anatomical structures will benefit from this book.Earn continuing education credits/units! Book SynopsisBiomechanics of Injury, Third Edition, explains the biomechanical principles of injury and how injuries affect the normal function of human anatomy. With a clear, accessible writing style and nearly 400 full-color photos and anatomy illustrations, it guides readers through the mechanical concepts of injuries without a heavy emphasis on mathematics.Previously titled Biomechanics of Musculoskeletal Injury, this third edition expands coverage of injuries beyond those of the musculoskeletal system to include the head, neck, and spine. Joining noted biomechanists Ronald Zernicke and William Whiting is concussion expert and athletic trainer Steven Broglio, who offers insights on head trauma and other neurological injuries. Unique in its evaluation of and appreciation for the intricacies of injury mechanisms, Biomechanics of Injury, Third Edition, comprehensively examines these issues: The mechanical aspects of injury and the concept of injury as a stimulus for beneficial tissue adaptations The effects of injury on the normal function of the human anatomy and joint mechanics Mechanical parameters such as force, stress and strain, stiffness, and elasticity and their application to tissue mechanics and injury How connective tissues respond to mechanical loading and how those tissues are studied to quantify their mechanical behavior Factors such as age, gender, nutrition, and exercise, with an emphasis on how lifestyle choices might lessen the chance or severity of injury How the principles of mechanical load and overload, use and overuse, level and progression of injury, and the many contributory factors involved in injury combine to form a backdrop for viewing specific injuries Updated sidebars present a detailed analysis of anterior cruciate ligament injuries, rotator cuff pathologies, and concussion. In addition, the text discusses topics of current concern such as falls in older populations, throwing-related rotator cuff pathologies, and youth injuries from carrying backpacks.Biomechanics of Injury, Third Edition, also employs learning aids to help readers understand and retain information. Objectives at the start of each chapter highlight the main concepts. Key terms appear in bold in the text and are defined in the glossary. Key Points at the end of each chapter summarize central concepts. Questions to Consider appear at the end of each chapter to test readers’ understanding and ability to apply the information presented. Updated Suggested Readings are included at the end of each chapter for readers who wish to dive deeper into selected topics.Knowledge of the biological responses of tissues to mechanical loading improves our understanding of injury and its consequences. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisImbalances in the human body are easily recognized in yoga. With an innovative blend of yoga and anatomy, Vayu Jung Doohwa shows how a few simple adjustments based on your postural type is all you need to correct these imbalances and take your practice to new heights! Do you struggle with certain yoga poses? Are you restricted in backward bends? Do you feel that one hip is more externally rotated than the other? Identifying Postural Imbalances Through Yoga will help you identify exactly where (and why) you hold particular patterns and, more importantly, demonstrate how to overcome them. We all house a collection of compensations in our bodies—usually the result of daily routine, injury, or emotional trauma—and these compensations impact how we move. Author Vayu Jung Doohwa has developed his own unique methodology by which he “diagnoses” yoga practitioners into four postural groups—A, P, C, and N—and then “prescribes” adjustments to release and overcome the musculoskeletal imbalances relating to each one. These corrective methods use simple prompts in each pose to help restore the pelvis to neutral and improve spinal balance, limb alignment, and breath control. Part I illustrates methods for identifying imbalances by observing how the lines and sections of the body act in a number of diagnostic yoga poses. Part II examines the four postural (body) types in greater detail by describing pelvic tilt, spinal curvature, breathing, and energy patterns. Part III presents the most effective strategies for restoring joint movement, counteracting imbalances of the core, and optimizing breathing for each body type. Also included is a quick-reference visual comparison of the four body types in 15 different yoga poses. Brought to life using over 250 engaging color diagrams and photographs, this innovative, scientific interpretation of Ashtanga yoga is a vital resource for yoga practitioners of all levels!Table of ContentsPart I. Book SynopsisThere’s a new buzzword in the fitness world: fascia. It’s the connective tissue that wraps around your muscles and organs and helps keep everything in place. But in our increasingly busy and often stressful lives, tension and toxins are often stored within our fascia, resulting in serious long-term consequences, such as excess weight, acute anxiety, chronic pain and poor posture. Fitness and alignment expert Lauren Roxburgh – who has worked with such stars as Gwyneth Paltrow, Gabby Reece and Melissa Rauch – has the solution to keep your fascia supple, flexible and strong. Using only a foam roller, you can reshape and elongate your muscles, release tension, break up scar tissue and rid yourself of toxins for a leaner, younger look. In just 15 minutes a day, Roxburgh’s 21-day programme will guide you through a simple series of her unique rolling techniques that target 10 primary areas of the body, including the shoulders, chest, arms, legs, hips, bottom, back and stomach. The end result is a healthy, balanced, aligned body that not only looks but feels fantastic. Includes over 80 photographs to help guide you through the exercises.Trade ReviewLauren’s method sculpts the body's soft tissues, slimming and streamlining whatever part you work. She’s a body whisperer! * Goop.com *Lauren is truly a physical and spiritual miracle worker. Her foam roller method transforms you inside and out ... Lauren is a magician and deftly melted it away over the course of a single session. I watched as she moved my midsection like putty and brought back an hourglass curve, something I'd resigned myself to never see again. And the resurrections seem to be here to stay. Every night now I lie on a roller to release the tension of the day: it restores my back after hunching over a laptop all day and has greatly diminished my recurring upper back pain. 5 in stock

Book SynopsisThis edited collection is the first complete guide for rehabilitation professionals seeking to engage a whole-person, biopsychosocial, and mind-body medicine integrated approach to care. Drawing on the foundations of integrative medicine, Integrative Rehabilitation Practice (IRP) goes beyond the treatment of symptoms to explore multiple levels, roots, and possible contributing factors to individual's health experience. IRP acknowledges the complex inseparability of biological, behavioral, psychosocial, spiritual, and environmental influences. The book covers both the theoretical foundations of IRP and applications to practice in the fields of physical therapy, occupational therapy, yoga therapy, speech and language therapy, and many other professions.Featuring contributions from Matthew J. Taylor, Marlysa Sullivan, Andra DeVoght and other professionals, case studies, storytelling, and reflective exercises, this cross-disciplinary clinical training guide is essential reading for all rehabilitation professionals, as well as others interested in advancing whole-person care.Trade Review"Health care" as practiced these days is dysfunctional. This detailed text was created to advance an ongoing necessary evolution of current rehabilitation practice. Utilizing realistic case examples and opportunity for personal reflection, it serves as a complex, "deep-dive" resource manual for developing holistic humanistic healthcare practices for "post normal" times. It pragmatically outlines the nuts and bolts of a model of true healthcare that offers practitioners examples of practice models based on an alternative to those currently utilized which were created from an outmoded linear science that reflects a "fix-it" mentality of disease and disability management. This manual offers an evidence-based foundation of how to provide patient care emphasizing authentic health care that is comprehensive and relational, where the patient is sovereign, and all systems coordinate and cooperate to offer comprehensive holistic care. -- Carol M. Davis, DPT, EdD, MS, FAPTA Myofascial Release Physical Therapist, Integrated Physical Therapy and Wellness Professor, Emerita Department of Physical Therapy, University of Miami, Miller School of MedicineI am not sure I can contain my enthusiasm about this textbook! Finally, a comprehensive and inclusive text that presents an expanded whole person, heart-centered rehabilitation paradigm for rehabilitation. The perfect blend of evidence, clinical examples, experimental learning, and reflection helps me personally engage with the material and feel empowered to be part of the process of transforming healthcare. I am thrilled to recommend this must-have text and cannot wait to share its contents with my students. -- Michelle Bradshaw, DC, OTR/L Associate Professor and Chair of Graduate Studies, Department of Occupational Therapy, Ithaca CollegeThis book is the most important and relevant collection of expert perspectives on integrative rehabilitation. I highly recommend this book for all healthcare professionals and even to patients. The breadth of collective knowledge and depth of experience brings together the most comprehensive wisdom on integrative rehab practice in print. This book is an empowering read and the experiential pauses throughout the book make the learning "hands on". Through stories and cases, the authors beautifully weave the importance of the whole person into the care of the physical body while recognizing the power and complexity of the mind and spirit in the healing process. -- Mari Ricker, MD Associate Professor in Family and Community Medicine and Assistant Professor in Family and Community Medicine, Director of Integrative Medicine in Residency, Andrew Weil Center for Integrative MedicineThe use of storytelling in this text brings each chapter alive engaging the reader in a practical and accessible way no matter the profession or environment you are working in. With a focus on cultivating psychological flexibility in relationship to science, within ourselves and with our clients it serves a purpose at various levels of the mind-body-environment connection. The authors humbly create a case for embracing uncertainty which is embedded within IRP. Therefore, if you are wanting to cultivate fresh eyes and clearer sight into your experience as a rehab practitioner or have just entered the field, then this is a valuable new resource for that creation to begin. -- Louise Sanguine, OTR/L Occupational Therapist, Adolescent Addiction and Mental Health Outpatient Therapist, AB, Canada Occupational Therapy Consultant, Simply Counseling Services and Imagine Psychological ServicesThis book is a totally unique book that should be read by a range of professionals. Health Professionals, students going through training in any health care field, Public Health Professionals, Politicians, and of course people that are experience anything less than acceptable levels of health should read this book. The first part of this book suggests a new base/concept/context for health. As it is stated in the book: "Not new tools on existing Practice Patterns, but a new orientation as base." I could not agree more. It is time that we stop "band aiding" a health care system that is not working towards healthy citizens and communities. We need to form a new base and this book suggests a new base that we at least should consider. It looks at relationship building between the health care worker and patient/client, and also how the environment and society has to be considered when we are looking at health. Part 1 includes many diagrams and figures that highlights the message that the editors are trying to convey and makes the writing much easier to follow. There is a lot of talk about multi-disciplinary and trans disciplinary health care. Those are buzzwords in education and health care today. The editors do a very nice job suggesting that integrated health care is a more appropriate concept for the future.Part 2 and 3 of the book are looking more at specific explorations and skills as well as public health and advocacy, and has been written by health care experts in a variety of fields. Not until the reader have a solid grounding in Part 1 should they go on and read Part 2 and 3, and then they should always tie the chapters in part 2 and 3, back to part 1. Many books become more fragmented when different contributors write individual chapters. Erb and Schmid have managed to incorporate the individual chapters with each other, without losing the connection to the vision that is laid out in part 1. Overall, I strongly recommend this book. Part 1 should be read and re-read to ground the reader in the editors vision of a new health care that will bring forth healthier citizens and communities. -- Staffan Elgelid, PT, PhD, GCFP, RYT 500, C-IAYT Professor in Physical Therapy, Nazareth CollegeIntegrative Rehabilitation Practice (IRP) is the first book of its kind to apply the powerful mind-body concepts of Integrative Medicine to the field of rehabilitation. It is a Call to Action for all rehab professionals! This comprehensive text allows clinicians to "walk the walk" of an integrated approach within our respective professions. The "Body-as-Machine" paradigm has served us well in solidifying skills in the "bio" component of rehab medicine. "YES/AND" is a tool that is expounded on throughout the text to embrace our "bio" history AND develop a whole person approach so as not to undervalue ourselves and our patients by offering a reductionistic view on health. Experiential pauses are woven throughout each chapter to encourage reflection and integration of the concepts learned. There are no easy solutions or cookie-cutter approaches. There are no five-step solutions offered, rather a breadth and depth of knowledge that is a breeding ground for clinical growth and development. With curiosity and humility, IRP serves as a guide and a resource to create the best possible future for yourself and all those you serve. As you embrace IRP, step into the future of rehab! -- Carolyn Vandyken, PT Registered Physiotherapist, Physio Works Muskoka Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, Educator, Advocate, Researcher Co-Founder, Reframe RehabThis book is the expression of an important evolution in creating the necessary bridge between mind and body and emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary care. With this book, the authors set out a new course for future-oriented rehabilitation care. The focus is not purely on the functional aspect of care but also on optimizing the well-being and empowering of the individual by promoting physical activity, exercise, movement awareness and functional movement and thus bringing together physical and mental aspects. Inviting people to the integrative rehabilitation practice is not always about finding a direct solution; it is rather about helping people to start a dialogue with their body. The versatile book provides a comprehensive overview of practices, which stress the centrality of the body to overcome psychological distress. Everyone in clinical practice will find something to suit his taste, regardless of his or her theoretical or therapeutic background. Moreover, this book provides food for thought and that is what a good book should do. Reflection is the basis of successful and quality care in the rehabilitation sector. -- Em. Prof Michel Probst, PT, Ph.D Department Rehabilitation Sciences KU Leuven,Belgium. President of the International organization for Physical Therapy in Mental HealthWhen you recognise that a holistic approach to assessment and care is the next step in your work as a rehab professional, this is the book to open. You have learned that biopsychosocial, and holistic and body-mind views are best to serve your patients, but you don't yet have the language for a coherent discussion on the topic. You understand these approaches but lack the skills to translate key concepts to effective assessment or treatment. Open this book to any chapter; had this been the framework of a compulsory pre-licensure course, your work to date would have been far more effective. -- Neil Pearson, PT, MSc(RHBS), BA-BPHE, C-IAYT, E-RYT500 Physical Therapist, Yoga Therapist Clinical Assistant Professor, University of British Columbia Lead Contributor, Pain Foundations Pain BCThis book is a missing contextual link that can be used for medical and other health care students about integrative medicine and care. The book is well organized and the exercises deepen the flow. I believe every person who has the opportunity to serve others in healthcare would benefit tremendously from reading Integrative Rehabilitation Practice. This book reminds us of the many beautiful ways we are able to interact with each other and how very powerful each interaction can be. -- Anne E. (Annie) Weisman, Ph.D., M.P.H., L.M.T. Director of Wellness & Integrative Medicine University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of MedicinePerson-centred care has long been a buzz word in healthcare. Transitioning from the biomedical model into an integrated and complexity model is challenging, and can feel so wide it's impossible to see round. This book is a great introduction to some complex theories and will give you a wide, flexible framework to develop your practice within. Opening up the 'thinking space' to nurture collaboration and tailor individualised, meaningful care. In short, it will help you do your job. -- Laura Rathbone, BA BSc MSc MCSP MACP HCPC Advanced Physiotherapist, Consultant, and Educator Specialised in complexly presenting pain conditionsIntegrative Rehabilitation Practice, compiled edited by Matt Erb and Arlene Schmid, is more than a textbook. It is a living, breathing and crucial guide to truly integrate the mind and body in a medical realm that has long only attended to the physical. They even take the needed leap to demonstrate the role of nutrition, gut health and epigenetics and give a broader view of the complexities these providers negotiate even in just one diagnosis. As an Integrative Physician myself, I was astounded at the attention to not only how to cultivate an integrative practice within the provider's practice, but to the integration of that work within the provider themselves. Studying this book is an alive experience as the reader is encouraged throughout to weave the teachings into their own selves and not just be a passive learner. There is thoughtful attention and to the language we can use and our need to wield its power in a way that empowers the patient for a collaborative relationship with us and with themselves. The guidance found in this work expands the integration of the mind and body to a new level and will no doubt forge a deeper path for Integrative Medicine within all of health care. -- Tanmeet Sethi, MD Fellowship Director and Faculty, Swedish Cherry Hill Family Medicine Residency Assistant Professor, University of Washington Medical School, Seattle, WAThe forthcoming book, Integrative Rehabilitation Practice by Matt Erb and colleagues is a landmark book for the rehab professions, particularly physical therapy. This book provides us, educators in academic and clinical settings with critical depth to concepts where we often just scratch the surface. While we talk about taking a wholistic approach to patient care and integrating all body systems, the socio-cultural-behavioral systems consistently receive little curricular attention and limited research funding, yet fully understanding the lived experience of the patient is central to all clinical care. The chapters provide sound evidence of important concepts and models that have direct clinical application. Concepts like social determinants of health and application of the ICF model are detailed in ways that makes them come "to life" for all learners, students and faculty. This book will have a transformative influence for several of us in the health professions. -- Gail M. Jensen, PT, PhD, FAPTA Professor Dean, Graduate School and College of Professional Studies, School of Pharmacy and Health Professions Creighton UniversityIn this book, INTEGRATIVE REHABILITATION PRACTICE - The Foundations of Whole-Person Care for Health Professionals, Matt Erb and Arlene Schmid seek to define and describe the complexities and philosophy of Integrative Rehabilitation Practice with success. Book SynopsisIntegrating holistic treatments into movement and wellness practices, Cultivating a Sustainable Core is an indispensable guide for initiating and organizing assessments and interventions for patients with multiple injuries.Drawing on clinical research and years of experience in physical therapy, sports medicine, athletic conditioning and yoga, this book explains why the author first addresses the body's dynamic central motor stability and efficiency when treating clients. Cultivating a Sustainable Core demonstrates how the application of breathing, mindful movement and cognitive reframing practices can counteract the effects of detrimental postural and movement habits, breath and thought patterns, pain, and chronic stress. Extensive research backs up the author's discoveries while illustrations and user-friendly practices bring the theory and practical techniques to life.Trade ReviewLiz Duncanson shares profound personal stories, insights, movement practices, and wisdom in this book. The book is a treasure for health care providers, wellness practitioners, and also those seeking to optimize their own mind, body and spirit as integrated, interdependent parts. Readers will obtain a broad myofascial, viscerosomatic, neuroendocrine and energetic view of the core of the body, in contrast to what has previously been depicted in the scientific world as a fragmented isolated centre of the body core. The use of imagery, illustrations and exercise sequencing combine to create a guide for fitness as well as rehabilitation and the results of implementing this work can lead to an aligned, mindful, fully breathing core. Liz Duncanson elegantly defines and explains the yoga practices that offer spiritual awareness, growth, and a glimpse into bliss and offers readers pearls beyond yoga Asanas and Pranayama. I highly recommend it. -- Maureen Mason, DPT, WCS, PYT, author of Pelvic RehabilitationCultivating a Sustainable Core demonstrates the necessity for Yoga Therapy as a modality right along with Athletic Training, Strength and Conditioning and Physical Therapy. Book SynopsisSongs and rhymes have been used by physicians for centuries in China as a means of memorising and passing on methods of practice and behaviour, moral attitudes, effective points, diagnostic tips and rules of thumb. Contemporary acupuncturists can see from these poems the depths of the tradition, better understand a breadth of diagnostic skills and treatment planning, and as a result greatly improve their appreciation of intent within their own practice. The poems also serve as a gentle introduction to the philosophy behind acupuncture practice. This is the first translation of these acupuncture odes, songs and rhymes from the Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion compiled by the Chinese physician Yang Jizhou during late Ming China. The book includes a comprehensive introduction that places the work in historical, cultural, and medical context, a symptom index, a point index glossary and a list of helpful points for common signs and symptoms encountered in acupuncture and physiotherapy clinics.Trade ReviewThis unique book would be of great interest of experience acupuncturists who wish to understand more about the complexities of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) assessment, diagnosis and treatment. -- Journal of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered PhysiotherapistsIt is a difficult job to read traditional Chinese medical canons in the classical style - even for the young Chinese - but an exceptional translation into English can miraculously benefit scholars worldwide who wish to study the real ancient meaning of Chinese medicine. Richard Bertschinger's The Great Intent is such a book. -- Professor Dr Bo-Ying Ma, MD, MA, PhD, FRSM, Chairman of the Federation of Traditional Chinese Medicine, UKIf you love Chinese medicine, read this book. You will actually feel that you are part of a centuries-old tradition. In a way, it's a bit like having the handouts from a Ming dynasty college. But it's more. Richard, in a labour of love, conveys across centuries some of that ineffable "stuff" called wisdom. -- John Hicks, joint principal and co-founder of the College of Integrated Chinese MedicineThe Great Intent by Richard Bertschinger truly demonstrates that the Chinese acupuncturists were much more adept at using language to aid learning when compared to the simple mnemonics and acronyms used in Western medicine. This unique book would be of great interest to experienced acupuncturists wishing to understand more about the complexities of traditional assessment, diagnosis and treatment. -- Helen Oakes, Clinical Editor of the Journal of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered PhysiotherapistsThe heritage of the ancient Chinese masters has made its way down to us via the written and the oral traditions, the latter partly in the form of songs and odes. Richard Bertschinger had the inspiration of translating for the Western world Yang Jizhou's written collection of these odes. Book SynopsisMany sports people are interested in trying yoga techniques in the hope of improved flexibility, strength, breathing and concentration, but many can be prevented from optimal results due to a lack of understanding on the part of yoga teachers of the specific physical requirements of their sport. This is a manual for professionals who work with athletes of all disciplines and shows them how to adapt yoga practice for swimmers, cyclists, runners, tennis players and more. This bridge between evidence-based modern sports medicine and the ancient practices of yoga, provides solid training guidance as well as offers psychological wisdom to help control and refine the actions of the mind. Essential reading for yoga therapists and teachers, athletic coaches and bodywork professionals who work with athletes.Trade ReviewI loved the book and the insight into yoga and sport. Being a professional big wave surfer and yoga practitioner, what interests me the most is the breath work and training in yoga and how that can help with lung capacity and training for big wave surfing. The chapter on breathing and breath work was the most interesting to me and it has some great examples to work with. People often ask me about yoga and surfing and I am so glad that I can now recommend Jim's book to them. -- Frank Solomon, Professional Surfer and Yoga PractitionerAs a competitive age group triathlete, I always struggled with my running. Working with and learning from Jim was the best move I made - he taught me everything I didn't know about breathing, form & posture to improve not only my running, but swimming & cycling as well. To this day I still do my cat/cow moves on longer bike rides amongst many other "tricks" Jim taught me. -- Britt Hyland, Swim & Triathlon Coach, K8 Sport & Lifestyle CoachingJim translates his profound knowledge of yoga into its practical, easily digestible, and very relevant application for sport performance... the book will take you and your game on a wonderful journey. -- Paddy Upton, Author, Coach and SpeakerIt has been such a pleasure to read and now review 'Yoga for Sports Performance: A Guide for Yoga Therapists and Bodyworkers' by Jim Harrington. I have followed Jims work for some time now and so I can testify that he is not just a brilliant writer and an inspirational teacher but he is also an incredible person who speaks with the authority of personal teaching experience and the adventures of life over many decades. I really respect that Jim has taken the time to research everything he is sharing his book. Nearly all his work is backed by published evidence from modern medical scientific literature and/or old indian texts. As the title of Chapter 1 of his book suggests, this work is truly a place where East meets West. I would highly recommend this book to anyone teaching activities involving posture, movement, breathing and/or mental control. -- Simon Borg-Olivier, MSc BAppSc (Physiotherapy) APAM C-IAYT, Course Coordinator/Lecturer, Masters of Wellness Degree RMIT University, Director, Yoga SynergyTable of Contents1. Book SynopsisStroke patients continue to present a major challenge to the rehabilitation professions. In particular, the "rehabilitated" patient with a useless hand remains an all too common phenomenon. This book focuses on the sensory perceptual disturbances caused by stroke which, even if slight can be the crucial factor in poor hand function. A wide-ranging review is presented of the processes of functional reorganisation by which the brain responds to the demands posed by injury as well as by learning. An inescapable conclusion from this literature is that any therapy which aims to harness these processes for the restoration of function after stroke needs to engage the patient's attention and motivation. This is followed by a detailed description of the method of Sensory Re-education developed by the author through long experience with patients and culminating in a clinical trial which establised its effectiveness. While the book is intended primarily for physiotherapists and occupational therapists, it contains much to interest all who are concerned with brain function in health and disease, including neurologists and neuropsychologists, as well as stroke patients and their families.
