Book SynopsisThe goal of this book is to provide brief-but-comprehensive information that can aid in rapid differential diagnosis and allow for more thorough follow-up if needed. This guide is intended to fit easily into the pocket of a lab coat or on your desk, giving readers an efficient way to find information about a specific disease or disorder to prepare for an upcoming case. The book is divided into two parts: Part 1 involves general psychometric and reference information including score classifications, formulas for score conversion, likelihood chaining, and reliable change, psychometric data for stand-alone and embedded PVTs, and the effects of common medications on cognition. Part 2 of the book is organized alphabetically by disease or disorder to promote quick searching, and each chapter provides straightforward information including definitions, subtypes, etiology, epidemiology, course, diagnostic criteria, expectations for test results, and links to more comprehensive sources. Whenever possible, information is gathered through up-to-date literature and high quality pubilcations such as systematic reviews or meta-analyses. Helpful references are provided for more extensive follow-up or further reading.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Disorders are split into three main groups: mostly rapid onset, variable onset, and insidious onset. • Springer International Publishing AG The Myth of Executive Functioning: Missing Elements in Conceptualization, Evaluation, and Assessment

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisExecutive functioning: we measure it, assess it, document its development in youth, track its decline in age and use it as a basis for diagnoses, treatment planning and-of course-theories. Could it be possible that science has spent decades chasing a cognitive phantom?Noting the lack of consensus concerning definition, component skills, and location within the brain, The Myth of Executive Functioning calls basic assumptions, prominent theories, commonly used test methods, and even the phrase executive functioning into question. The book's deceptively simple argument takes an evolutionary/neuroscience look at the cornerstones of cognitive organization, including memory, planning, decision-making and adaptation to novel circumstances. From there, gaps are identified between systems of cognitive control and those behaviors that are evaluated in neuropsychological testing-gaps that contribute to the disconnect between how science views mind and body, brain and behavior. The author's problem-solving metaphor places new emphasis on stimulus processing and on the relationship between movement and thought as he offers thought-provoking perspectives on: The limits of neuropsychological constructs. The components of adaptive thinking. The automatic aspects of problem solving. The left-brain/right-brain dichotomy. Problems with the domain approach to cognition. New paradigms for testing cognitive functioning. A controversial presentation with the potential to change clinical practice and training, The Myth of Executive Functioning will be read, debated and learned from by neuropsychologists, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, cognitive neuroscientists and rehabilitation specialists.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Problem Solving: Practical Examples and Additional Properties.- The Problem Solving Metaphor, Neuropsychology, and Exective Functioning.- Neuropsychological Constructs, Assumptions, and Executive Functioning: Revisiting Principles of Brain Organization.- Functional Domains, Unitary Constructs, and the Intergrated Brain.- Large Scale Brain Systems.- The Application of Large Scale Brain Systems to Practical "EF" Behavior: Revisting the Introductory Examples.- The Novelty -Routinization Principle of Brain Organization.- Clues to Understanding the Phylogeny of Behavioral Control.- Ways of Generating Behavior.- Movement, Thinking, Anticipation, and Banishing Exectuvie Functioning.- The Four Steps of the Development of the Cognitive Control System.- Abolishing the Executive and the Mind-Body Problem.- Why Cognitive Control is an Expansion of Cortical-Cerebellar and Cortical-Basal Ganglia Motor Control Systems.- The Cerebro-Cerebellar Underpinning of Cognitive Control.- Structure and Function of the Cerebro-Cerebellar Circuitary System.- The Basal Ganglia Underpinning of Cognitive Control: The Fronto-Striatal System.- Cognitive Control, Reward, and the Basal Ganglia.- Basal Ganglia Dynamics, Cognition, and Social Behavior.- Interim Summary.- How Well Do These Principles “FIT” Exceptional Cases?.- Why People Who Cannot Move Are Aable to Think.- The Exceptionality of the Congenitally Blind.- The Exceptionality of Deafness.- NEeuropsychological Testing and Neuropsychological Evaluation: Is There A Difference Between These Aprroaches?.- Missing Elements in the Neuropsychological Assessment of EF.- The Tradtional Neuropsychological Assessment Paradigm.- The Motor Examination.- The Evaluation of Reward Preferences.- Summary, Conclusions, and Future Directions.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisBlockages to be solved with coaching are often the result of repressed traumatic experiences of a person or their ancestors. Pictorial models will guide the reader into the multi-layered landscape of the soul and its principles. Along the way, the book decodes traumas as the soul’s fundamental building blocks and follows them back to their origins: existential limit-experiences and their common denominator, the splitting of the soul. The consequences of this autonomous survival mechanism affect all areas of life, starting from the unconscious. Therefore, they are not accessible by conventional methods working with the conscious mind. The presented integrative approach provides means and ways that significantly expand the potential of coaching. • Brill An Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing: Sixth Edition

Book SynopsisNow available in a sixth edition, An Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing is the leading textbook in the field of auditory perception, also known as psychoacoustics. The textbook's longevity and loyal readership can be attributed to the accessible manner in which it describes the relationships between the characteristics of the sounds that enter the ear and the sensations that they produce. Wherever possible, the author has specified these relationships in terms of the underlying mechanisms. The intention is to impart an understanding of what the auditory system does and how it works: research results are not just described, but are interpreted and evaluated; knowledge is not assumed, but deduced from basic principles. Topics covered include the physics of sound, the physiology of the auditory system, frequency selectivity and masking, loudness perception, temporal analysis, pitch perception, sound localization, timbre perception, the perceptual organization of complex auditory 'scenes', speech perception, and practical applications such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and high-fidelity sound reproduction. The book also includes extensive references to recent research so that those interested in a specific area can readily obtain more detailed information. The new edition of An Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing has been thoroughly updated. New sections have been added covering perceptual methods of estimating basilar-membrane compression, informational masking of non-speech and speech sounds, experiments and theories concerning pitch perception, and the perception of speech in complex auditory environments. *This title was originally published by Emerald with ISBN 9781780520384Table of ContentsPreface to the Sixth Edition The nature of sound and the structure and function of the auditory system Absolute thresholds Frequency selectivity, masking and the critical band The perception of loudness Temporal processing in the auditory system Pitch perception Space perception Auditory pattern and object perception Speech perception Practical applications References Glossary Index

  • Brill Timing and Time Perception: Procedures, Measures, & Applications

Book SynopsisTiming and Time Perception: Procedures, Measures, and Applications is a one-of-a-kind, collective effort to present the most utilized and known methods on timing and time perception. Specifically, it covers methods and analysis on circadian timing, synchrony perception, reaction/response time, time estimation, and alternative methods for clinical/developmental research. The book includes experimental protocols, programming code, and sample results and the content ranges from very introductory to more advanced so as to cover the needs of both junior and senior researchers. • Brill Vestibular Cognition

Book SynopsisIn this volume specific cognitive sub-functions are identified and indications of how basic vestibular input contributes to each are described. The broad range of these functions is consistent with the broad spread of vestibular projections throughout the cortex. Combining vestibular signals about the head’s orientation relative to gravity with information about head position relative to the body provides sufficient information to map body position onto the ground surface and underlie the sense of spatial position. But vestibular signals are also fundamental to sensorimotor control and even to high-level bodily perception such as the sense of body ownership and the anchoring of perspective to the body. Clinical observations confirm the essential role of vestibular signals in maintaining a coherent self-representation and suggest some novel rehabilitation strategies. The chapters presented in this volume are previously published in a Special Issue of Multisensory Research, Volume 28, Issue 5-6 (2015). Contributors are: M. Barnett-Cowan, O. Blanke, J. Blouin, G.
