It is broken up into nine chapters containing short descriptions of over 100 games or exercises that facilitate an aspect of homework - perfect for dipping into. -- Special ChildrenWhile the book aims to help parents of children with ADHD, it is something that any parent would benefit from. I wish I had come across it years ago. -- Special ChildrenVeteran educator Green offers some sound ideas for creatively approaching that dreaded nightly task called homework--a task made exponentially more difficult with an ADHD child. Designed for children in grades K-8, each activity is designed to engage, enable, enrich, and encourage the ADHD child by leveraging the traits associated with the disorder. From answering multiplication problems by jumping the correct number of times to learning spelling words by using a variety of writing tools (e.g., finger in air, glitter pens, computer keyboard), Green addresses everything from preparing the external environment to tools for dealing with ADHD-specific challenges and provides tips for individual subject areas such as writing, spelling, and math. VERDICT Her overriding philosophy is that parents cannot bestow enough positives. Green's creative and empowering tools will become go-to strategies for many families and teachers. Enthusiastically recommended. -- Library JournalChange homework helplessness to homework excitement when you follow suggestions in "AD/HD Homework Challenges Transformed!" by Harriet Hope Green. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisCreativity stimulates older adults both mentally and emotionally and has numerous cognitive and social benefits. Providing culturally-sensitive strategies for improving memory through creativity, this timely book outlines innovative techniques and gives essential insight into effective clinical work in a world with an increasing number of diverse older adults and incidences of Alzheimer's disease. Amanda Alders Pike clearly explains how to structure sessions and use artistic creativity to improve memory, mood and socialization. She covers everything from how to introduce art materials and techniques, to how to enhance cross-cultural interaction. Graphs, charts, and tables illustrate how artistic creativity can parallel cognitive training to provide optimal benefits to a wide audience of older adults, and accompanying online material is provided for use in sessions and workshops.Trade ReviewThis is the book I've been waiting for. With one fell swoop Dr Amanda Pike has answered all the questions I've been asking for over 20 years while developing art programs for older people and observing the remarkable improvement in quality of life as they become absorbed in creative expression. Dr Pike argues her case lucidly and logically. She explores the scientific evidence in depth without overwhelming the reader. An essential handbook for all art facilitators. -- Nancy Tingey, Founder and Coordinator of Painting with Parkinson's, Churchill Fellowship project, 1996 - Art as a Therapy for Parkinson'sArt therapy has often been labelled inaccurately in the health profession as a past-time, “arts and crafts” modality. Amanda Alders Pike's well written and promising book sets the record straight. Improving Memory through Creativity demonstrates how art and science come together, and how creativity is an essential component to neural development. An inspiring book that validates the importance of art, memory and quality of life. -- Angel C. Duncan, M.A. MFT, ATR, Neuropsychiatric Research Center of Southwest Florida, and Ambassador for the American Art Therapy AssociationThis book deals with complex neurological concepts around ageing, cognitive impairment and creativity in a very readable way. The theoretical knowledge Amanda presents from her own research and experience, as well as an overview of current thinking is fascinating. Throughout she shows how information might be practically applied, and makes suggestions of how to use this in therapeutic art sessions with older adults. Rather than a recipe book Amanda's ideas are a springboard, I'm really excited to see where they will take me! -- Sarah Crockett, day care officer, activities provider, and author of Activities for Older People in Care Homes: A Handbook for Successful Activity PlanningThe use of graphs, photographs, charts, art work of participating older people make this book accessible, user friendly and a joy to read. -- Angelika Welzel-Connolly * Journal of Mental Health *Table of Contents1. • Marching to a Different Tune: Diary About an ADHD

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Marching to a Different Tune: Diary About an ADHD

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWritten by the mother of Stefan, a boy diagnosed with ADHD, Marching to a Different Tune is a day-by-day, moment-by-moment account of how his unusual and difficult behaviour affects and disrupts their family life inside and outside the home. Jacky Fletcher describes in intimate detail the struggles, embarrassments and triumphs her family experiences throughout a four year period of Stefan's childhood. The diary ends with an expression of the family's love for Stefan - as he approaches adolescence, they will learn new ways to cope with the challenges of his behaviour, applying the knowledge they have gained through experience.Marching to a Different Tune gives an essential new perspective to the understanding of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - it describes this complex set of behaviours from the inside. It complements and deepens the clinical presentation of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, at a time when this diagnosis is being applied to more and more children. The last chapter of the book gives a clinical description of ADHD; the appendix contains useful addresses for more information and support networks, and a list of recommended reading. This book will inform the practice of teachers and psychologists who work with ADHD children, and guide and support these children's parents and families.Trade ReviewThe author's description are beautiful and her style is elegant and compassionate. She conveys an honest view of her son that evokes emotions in the reader…Overall, a very thought provoking, stimulating (ADHD term) account of a mother's acceptance of and compassion for her son'. -- Book ReviewsJacky Fletcher's diary of her son who has ADHD provides an emotive insight into the relentless onslaught of challenging behaviour that can frequently render any carer feeling impotent. The vignettes provide clear examples of the traits of someone with ADHD. -- British Journal of Occupational TherapyThe diary could usefully be read by professionals as it gives an insight into the full, awesome experience of living with ADHD, and by parents who desperately need to know that they are not alone in their struggles to cope with their endearing but exasperating child. -- Therapy WeeklyThe title of this book accurately describes its intent and its product. It is a series of entries over a period of four years as the main actor, Stefan, moves from childhood to early adolescence. The book details the activities of Stefan as well as the frustrations of his parents and siblings with dealing with his amazing repertoire of adventures…For families seeking conformation that they are not alone in dealing with a child with ADHD, this book is useful. -- Disability Studies QuarterlyDescriptions of his daily activities are extremely illuminating and witty, giving the reader an insight into the constant challenges of living with a child with ADHD -- NAPOT JournalWhilst not a serious text book on ADHD, it is a very easy and entertaining read. Nevertheless I feel that this is a very important book which makes a valuable contribution to the subject. Text books can increase one's knowledge and learning about a subject. This book does the same but does so by telling how the experience is lived, not through facts or figures. Like most people I particularly enjoy a book that makes me feel something. This book did just that. I found myself fluctuate between sadness, anger and tears of laughter, classic elements of a good book. It offers a glimpse of what it is like to live day-to-day with a child with ADHD…Raising a child with ADHD is obviously difficult at times and whilst bearing in mind that Stefan's story may not be typical of every child with ADHD, there is no sense of despair in this book. I was left with a feeling of hope. Amid the difficulties there is love and affection. At the centre is a boy, a son, a unique personality who happens to have ADHD. -- Rostrum, The Voice of Social Work in ScotlandStefan, diagnosed with a severe form of ADHD, creates havoc on an almost daily basis. His mother, Jacky Fletcher, has written a diary about their family life. There is no doubt that turmoil follows wherever he treads but, in a funny, moving and inspirational account, the reader gains a unique insight into the frustrations of living with ADHD. Although admiration and compassion must go to Stefan's exhausted and endlessly patient family, Stefan's personality shines through. He is charming, difficult, unpredictable, intelligent and very much loved. -- JuniorTable of ContentsPreface. Chapter One: 1995. Chapter Two: 1996. Chapter Three: 1997. Chapter Four: 1998. Harwood-Academic Publishers Axonal Conduction Time and Human Cerebral

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAxonal Conduction Time and Human Cerebral Laterality-A Psychobiological Theory; takes a detailed look at the hypothesis that the psychological difference between the left and right hemispheres of the brain has a definite neurological basis. There is a multitude of literature concerning the difference between the two hemispheres of the brain but none which suggest a biological explanation. This book plugs that gap by making a connection between the psychological and the biological. Robert Miller has surveyed a wealth of material in researching his hypothesis, making it an essential review of the literature in this area which will be indispensable to workers in the fields of neuroscience, psychology, neurolinguistics, neuroanatomy, and neurocytology. This book takes a new and up-to-date look at the prominent theory that the left hemisphere is specialised for representing patterns extended in time whereas the right hemisphere represents simultaneous or 'spatial' patterns. What makes it unique in the field is that it looks at this theory from a neurobiological basis. It suggests that the difference resides in the range of conduction times in the axons connecting different regions of the cortex in each hemisphere. This hypothesis is discussed with respect to theoretical models of brain dynamics, and both gross and microscopic structure of the hemispheres. It deals with the psychological implications of the hypothesis for higher functions of the human cerebrum and outlines testable implications wherever Possible.Table of Contents1. Introduction 2. Book SynopsisThe aim of this work is to provide a comprehensive treatment-oriented introduction to the practice of child-clinical neuropsychology, focusing exclusively on the assessment of children and adolescents. The book has been designed specifically for those who wish to pursue education and training in this area of professional endeavor. The volume gives consideration to the following issues: treatment-oriented model of neuropsychological assessment (specification of brain-behavior relationships, dimensions of neuropsychological assessment, psychometric considerations, validity issues, modes of approach to neuropsychological interpretation, influence of demands of the environment, prediction of behavioral outcomes, development of realistic remedial plans and availability of resources for effective implementation of remedial plan, and continuing relationship between neuropsychological assessment and intervention); principles and hypotheses concerning the remediation of brain impairments in childhood and early adolescence; Variables related to the known or hypothesized brain lesion; determination of the child's remedial needs and remediable capacities, approaches to treatment (general treatment strategies, formats for intervention, treatment styles and techniques), and implementation of the remedial plan; learning disabilities (empirically derived LD subtypes, neuropsychological profiles, psychosocial typologies, and implications for treatment) and case studies (nonverbal learning disabilities and basic phonological processing disorder); and neurological disease, disorder, and dysfunction (approach to characterization of neurological disorders) and case studies (stroke, Asperger syndrome, traumatic brain injury, brain tumor, and Tourette syndrome). This book will be of critical interest to child-clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists who specialize in the assessment and/or treatment of adults with brain impairment and have some interest in childhood disorders, pediatric neurologists, child psychiatrists, and a host of other professionals whose practice brings them in contact with children whose behavior may be affected by brain dysfunction. Indeed, for all of these professionals and those in training to become such, this book will serve as a comprehensive introduction to a systematic approach to neuropsychological assessment and intervention for children and adolescents with suspected or established brain impairment.Trade Review'One of the strengths of this text is in its practical approach. There is much for the clinician, with the contents covering professional issues, advances in clinical assessment, neuropsychological interpretations, as well as a review of evidence-based interventions. The greatest contribution, however, comes from the numerous detailed case studies presented throughout the text and the authors' thoughtful, but scientific attempts to provide readers with a model for collating and integrating clinical information to achieve appropriate diagnosis and intervention.' - V. • The Ageing Brain

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Ageing Brain

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhen confronted with a neurological or psychiatric disorder in an elderly individual, a clinician or researcher is likely to ask how the processes of ageing have influenced the aetiology and presentation of the disorder, and will impact on its efficient management. There are many urban myths about ageing, and some of these apply to the brain. The reviews included in this book are an attempt to flush out some of these myths, and arm the clinician and general researcher with the empirical facts that can be mustered to substantiate claims about ageing. There are many salient questions: is cognitive change to be expected in an elderly individual? Is this change progressive, relentless and unselective, or is it focal and constrained? Would every person who lived long enough develop Alzheimer’s disease? Do our neurones die as we get old? What happens to the size of the brain and its metabolic activity? How do our hormones change with age? Can anti-oxidants slow or even stop the process of ageing? Are genes important in the ageing brain or is it all in the environment? How much of what we are is due to what we eat? The contributors to this book, each an expert in their field, have addressed some of these questions in a language simple enough for a general reader to understand. The book also deals with some of the most prominent brain disorders of old age - Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, vascular dementia, and depression. The focus is on the impact of ageing on these disorders. The discussions lay out a broad map for the clinician dealing with neuropsychiatric disorders, and the future researcher of brain ageing. In a field in which the developments are too numerous for any one individual to keep pace with, this book presents up-to-date summaries that can be a useful starting point. The field of brain ageing abounds in tabloid science. This book counters this by providing a strong empirical grounding and considered synthesis of the research.Table of ContentsSection 1.
