  • Cambridge University Press Niels Bohrs Philosophy of Physics

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book gives a clear and comprehensive exposition of Niels Bohr's philosophy of physics. Bohr's ideas are of major importance, for they are the source of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum physics; yet they are obscure, and call for the sort of close analysis that this book provides. The book describes the historical background of the physics from which Bohr's ideas grew. The core of the book is a detailed analysis of Bohr's arguments for complementarity and of the interpretation which he put upon it. Special emphasis is placed throughout on the contrasting views of Einstein, and the great debate between Bohr and Einstein is thoroughly examined. The book traces the philosophical influences on Bohr, and unravels the realist and anti-realist strands in his thinking. Bohr's philosophy is critically assessed in the light of recent developments in the foundations of quantum physics (the work of Bell and others) and in philosophy (the realism-anti-realism debate) and it is revealed Trade Review'The breadth and clarity of Murdoch's analysis makes this book a worthy addition to Bohrian scholarship.' • Cambridge University Press Nonlinear Time Series Analysis

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe paradigm of deterministic chaos has influenced thinking in many fields of science. Chaotic systems show rich and surprising mathematical structures. In the applied sciences, deterministic chaos provides a striking explanation for irregular behaviour and anomalies in systems which do not seem to be inherently stochastic. The most direct link between chaos theory and the real world is the analysis of time series from real systems in terms of nonlinear dynamics. Experimental technique and data analysis have seen such dramatic progress that, by now, most fundamental properties of nonlinear dynamical systems have been observed in the laboratory. Great efforts are being made to exploit ideas from chaos theory wherever the data displays more structure than can be captured by traditional methods. Problems of this kind are typical in biology and physiology but also in geophysics, economics, and many other sciences.Trade ReviewFrom reviews of the first edition: '… any serious physics institute should have such a book on its shelves. It will be of use to any experimental scientist dealing with nonlinear data or a theoretical physicist who desires a feeling of 'how one does it in an experiment'. The clear course of presentation should make it accessible to undergraduate students.' Daniel Wojcik, Pageoph'This book will be of value to any graduate student or researcher who needs to be able to analyse time series data, especially in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, geophysics, medicine, economics and the social sciences.' Mathematical Reviews'… a very readable introduction to the concepts and clear descriptions of the techniques, as well as cautions, where appropriate, about potential pitfalls and misuses of the methods. … the book is a good reference to the current state of the art from the nonlinear dynamics community and is important reading for anyone faced with interpreting irregular time series.' • Cambridge University Press The Surface Science of Metal Oxides

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is the first to give a comprehensive account of the fundamental properties of metal-oxide surfaces and their interaction with atoms, molecules and overlayers. The surfaces of metal oxides play a crucial role in an extremely wide range of phenomena, including the environmental degradation of high-Tc superconductors and catalysis. They are also increasingly important in processes such as the passivation of metal surfaces and gas sensing for pollution monitoring and control. As well as giving a general overview of the properties of metal-oxides, an extensive and thorough compilation of the research that has been performed on well characterised oxide surfaces is provided, thus making the book suitable for those graduate students and established researchers in materials science, chemistry or physics who have an interest in metal-oxide surfaces.Trade Review' … an extremely useful book which gives a competent and reliable survey of the field … The style of presentation, the instructive diagrams, and not least the outstandingly good treatment of the literature also make this a valuable resource for those engaged in related disciplines such as solid state physics, oxides chemistry, materials science and catalysis. Libraries are strongly recommended to buy it as a comprehensive monograph with a long life expectancy.' Angewandte Chemie'The subject covered by this excellent book is very much at the frontier of surface science. …The book represents by far the best means of getting acquainted with the field of oxide surface science. It is an invaluable reference source at a very reasonable price.' Chemistry in BritainTable of Contents1. Introduction; 2. Geometric structure of metal-oxide surfaces; 3. Surface lattice vibrations; 4. Electronic structure of non-transition metal-oxide surfaces; 5. Electronic structure of transition metal-oxide surfaces; 6. Molecular adsorption on oxides; 7.
