Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Physics of Solid Surfaces: Subvolume B
Book SynopsisThe reader will get an overview of the past and present research in all fields of Surface Science. Readers not familiar with a given field will benefit from the tutorial character of the Introductions, as a rule present in every chapter. Throughout the book emphasis is mainly given to clean surfaces although sometimes adsorbate-covered surfaces are also accounted for. Many readers will be particularly interested in chapters dealing with recently developed topics (graphene, nanotubes, metal oxides, solid-liquid interfaces, theoretical simulations, manipulation of atoms at surfaces with the methods of scanning probe microscopy, Casimir effect, etc.), for which research is continuously evolving. As it is customary in the LB Series, the results obtained in a given field are quoted as thoroughly as possible. The most relevant among them are presented in the form of figures (or tables), and comments or comparisons with other results are usually provided.Table of ContentsGeneral introduction.- Theoretical foundation and simulation of surface structures.- Surface reconstruction and relaxation.- Structural defects at surfaces.- Photoelectron Spectroscopies applied to Condensed Matter Systems.- Raman scattering at surfaces.- Field electron and ion emission: basic formulae and constants.- Epigraphene.- Fullerenes on surfaces.- Surfaces at solid-electrolyte interfaces.

Table of ContentsAllgemeine Strukturprinzipien - Thermisch-kalorische Messverfahren - Kolligative und hydrodynamische Methoden - Strukturuntersuchungen - Spektroskopische Methoden - Biochemische Reaktionen - Radioaktive Nuklide

Birkhauser Verlag AG Solution Structure and Solution Dynamics in
Book SynopsisThis book introduces some methods for the determination of the three-dimensional geometry of molecules in solution and the occurrence of dynamical processes (interaction with the solvent, rearrangements in the molecular geometry, interactions with other molecules) in several ytterbium complexes. An especial attention has been deserved to the study of some important catalysts that were recently developed in the scientific research. The determination of molecular geometry and dynamics in solution, even if it is generally a hard task, is often a crucial step to understand and rationalize the catalytic mechanism, as well to design new catalysts. The proposed methods are applied here to several systems, even chiral, and are founded on a detailed analysis of the paramagnetic and optical properties of the ytterbium ion, and combining several instrumental techniques (mainly Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Circular Dichroism).

Springer Battery Management Systems: Design by Modelling
Book SynopsisBattery Management Systems - Design by Modelling describes the design of Battery Management Systems (BMS) with the aid of simulation methods. The basic tasks of BMS are to ensure optimum use of the energy stored in the battery (pack) that powers a portable device and to prevent damage inflicted on the battery (pack). This becomes increasingly important due to the larger power consumption associated with added features to portable devices on the one hand and the demand for longer run times on the other hand. In addition to explaining the general principles of BMS tasks such as charging algorithms and State-of-Charge (SoC) indication methods, the book also covers real-life examples of BMS functionality of practical portable devices such as shavers and cellular phones. Simulations offer the advantage over measurements that less time is needed to gain knowledge of a battery's behaviour in interaction with other parts in a portable device under a wide variety of conditions. This knowledge can be used to improve the design of a BMS, even before a prototype of the portable device has been built. The battery is the central part of a BMS and good simulation models that can be used to improve the BMS design were previously unavailable. Therefore, a large part of the book is devoted to the construction of simulation models for rechargeable batteries. With the aid of several illustrations it is shown that design improvements can indeed be realized with the presented battery models. Examples include an improved charging algorithm that was elaborated in simulations and verified in practice and a new SoC indication system that was developed showing promising results. The contents of Battery Management Systems - Design by Modelling is based on years of research performed at the Philips Research Laboratories. The combination of basic and detailed descriptions of battery behaviour both in chemical and electrical terms makes this book truly multidisciplinary. It can therefore be read both by people with an (electro)chemical and an electrical engineering background. Table of ContentsList of abbreviations. List of symbols. Series preface. Preface. 1. Springer Chemistry from First Principles
Book Synopsis"Chemistry from First Principles" examines the appearance of matter in its most primitive form. It features the empirical rules of chemical affinity that regulate the synthesis and properties of molecular matter, analyzes the compatibility of the theories of chemistry with the quantum and relativity theories of physics, formulates a consistent theory based on clear physical pictures and manageable mathematics to account for chemical concepts such as the structure and stability of atoms and molecules. This text also explains the self-similarity between space-time, nuclear structure, covalent assembly, biological growth, planetary systems, and galactic conformation.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews: "This book is deeply thought-provoking and sets itself the task of taking a critical look at the arcane world of quantum mechanics especially in its applications to the realm of chemistry. … This groundbreaking book which is not heavily mathematical is certainly not be missed by anyone with an interest in quantum theory."
