    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book about Cesare Colombo (Milan, 1935-2016) is an essential reference for 20th century Italian photography. Animated by a strong civil sense, Colombo was also an historian, critic, curator of important exhibitions since the post-war period, and promoted debates which have contributed to a significant growth of photographic culture in Italy. Alongside his advertising and industrial activities, he collaborated with the Agfa Advertising Service, the 3M Foundation, the Archive of the Italian Touring Club, the Alinari Archives, together with a constant presence in prestigious photography magazines. This volume brings together 250 images that testify to the variety of interests and themes of his research: a nucleus is dedicated to his city, Milan, narrated in 60 years of urban, cultural and social transformations; included here are also photographs of political subjects, those dedicated to work, trade and finally art and culture. Text in English and Italian.

Book Synopsis"..new studies of Verger’s archive show a greater range of interest in his pictures, many of which celebrated jazz age nightlife and an emergent professional class. The rediscovered images are collected in a new book that offers a nuanced portrait of black America before the war." "Verger’s pictures offer a different perspective: thoughtful, often hopeful images of arresting individuals in black communities, full of aspirational intent and not shy of beauty." "Verger devoted his life to the study of the African diaspora across the world, always alive to human joys as well as social hardships." - The Observer "...illuminating collection of images.." "The 150 photographs – most previously unpublished – are, indeed, vibrant and full of energy, while the accompanying texts and images shine a light on this part of his life as well as his later career. This is an excellent study of a 20th-century great, for existing fans and those new to his work." - B&W Magazine Pierre Fatumbi Verger is considered one of the most outstanding photographers of the twentieth century as well as a recognized researcher in the field of African Diaspora and religion studies. Verger traveled to the United States of America in 1934 and 1937, during the Great Depression, producing a collection of stunning images that document the national symbols that configure American identity and the challenging social and economic atmosphere of the time. Verger was able to capture with great sensibility the complex cultural and racial diversity of the country where many citizens still confront segregation and poverty, while struggling to live a better life. Verger´s photographs constitute an extraordinary contribution to our understanding of the 1930´s in the U.S., and to the growth of photojournalism, documentary and artistic photography, representing the world from new and enriching perspectives. In the introduction, Javier Escudero Rodríguez frames Verger´s significant contribution to modern photography as well as the lasting relevance of this new collection of iconic images of the Great Depression. The 150 images included in the book, the majority of them never published before, were selected among 1110 negatives, after a meticulous research from Verger´s archive at the Pierre Verger Foundation in Salvador.

Damiani Steve Schapiro and Theophilus Donoghue: seventy

    15 in stock

Book Synopsis'Seamlessly woven together, the book explores their [father and son] shared passion for humanism and social activism, using the photograph as a means to foster intimate connections and explore meaningful truths -- a lesson Steve learned studying with illustrious photojournalist W. Eugene Smith.' - i-D Vice 'The dynamism of the images and the inventive sequencing make this not just a book of great photographs, but a great photography book full of energy and verve... a fitting tribute to [Shapiro's] legacy' - B&W Photography Famed photojournalist Steve Schapiro and his son Theophilus Donoghue have collaborated on seventy thirty, a photo project that is 70% Schapiro, 30% Donoghue. Seventy thirty depicts the various faces and expressions of humanity, from metropolitans to migrants, unseen homeless to conspicuous celebrities, such as Alec Guinness, Allen Ginsberg, Muhammad Ali, Robert De Niro, René Magritte, Janis Joplin, Andy Warhol, and the Velvet Underground. Schapiro photographs early New York skateboarders while Donoghue documents current Colombian breakdancers. Father and son both capture philosophically poignant moments that rouse reflection. Schapiro includes his classic photo “Man on Iceberg,” which was the opening double-page spread of a Life story on existentialism. In a similar fashion, Donoghue contributes his contemplative “Hindsight Intersection,” which was recently featured in ARTSY’s 20 21 Artists in Support of Human Rights Watch benefit auction. Shooting in monochrome with an occasional dash of colour, Schapiro and Donoghue portray the proud and lofty as well as the humble and humorous. Alternately profound and playful, Schapiro and Donoghue’s photographs capture a vast range of human emotion and experience. Like his father, Donoghue is equally concerned with social justice issues. For this project, Schapiro has selected images from the 60s civil rights movement and, with Donoghue, provided photos from today’s Black Lives Matter protests and environmental rallies. Apart from numerous stateside locations, their project includes images from India, Italy, Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Ecuador. Together father and son provide a touching overview of humanity throughout the world from the 1950s to present day.

    15 in stock

Book Synopsis"Patrick's work offers a mesmerising journey around the world in search of the divine, offering a timeless portrait of people living on the fringe, creating life on their own terms." - i-D For more than 25 years, French photographer Patrick Cariou has traveled to far out places around the globe, documenting people living on the fringes of society and making a way for themselves. Whether photographing surfers, gypsies, Rastafarians, or rude boys of Kingston, Cariou celebrates his subjects as they are: peoples of the earth who meet the struggles of life with honor, dignity, and joy. Bringing together works from his groundbreaking monographs including Surfers, Yes Rasta, Trenchtown Love, and Gypsies, Works 1985-2005 takes us on a scenic journey around the world, offering an intimate and captivating look at cultures that distance themselves from the blessings and curses of modernism. Given access to these hermetic realms, Cariou presents a fascinating portrait of resistance in a multiplicity of forms. The landscape plays a vital role in Cariou’s work, revealing how people live shapes their identity and destiny in equal part. Whether following the waves, living in the mountains, or surviving urban and rural poverty, Cariou’s subjects reval the importance of preserving one’s native culture at a time of Western cultural hegemony. The spirit of pride and defiance comes alive in his work; each of the peoples portrayed have found a way to survive despite the brutality facing them and the earth alike.

BAI NV Koen Lauwaert: Shot in Time

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis"To my mind, Koen is the photographer of the instant. Whatever the subject, the format, the colour may be, the emotion that is implied is always expressed vigorously; either with a sense of humour, seriousness, or with lots of tenderness. Unlike other photographers, he is not the prisoner of a style; his goal is to express the sincerity of the moment in its widest variety. Koen's freedom also lies in a real physical need to be in motion, on a journey. In this way, systematically taking pictures beyond the borders allows him to focus, to find himself, and to come as close as possible to the essence of his soul." Antoine Reyre, CEO CAPA Pictures Shot in Time is the first anthology by the Belgian photographer Koen Lauwaert, who displays his talent for developing an original and poetic language that alternates the different registers of contemporary photography, from portraiture to abstraction through reportage. Partly academically trained, studying at the Brussels Filmschool and the Photo Academy Rhok, Koen Lauwaert devised his own language in the field, working as a film operator during his military service and for an agency specialising in portraits of children and families as well as a cover author for rock band albums. Shot in Time is an autobiographical narrative in which the passion for photography goes hand in hand with Koen's nomadic soul, the images are taken all over the world, notably in Italy, a country for which the author has a predilection. Text in English and Italian.

Stichting Kunstboek BVBA Teddy Mazina: Africalia Editions

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisFrom the disbelief and outrage that the 2004 massacres in his beloved homeland Burundi had been ignored by the international media, simply because of the lack of an image archive, Teddy Mazina decided to become a photographer, a visual activist documenting his country. After a period of political asylum in Belgium, he returned to Burundi in 2007 where he set up the multimedia studio STUDIO-CLAN DESTIN. In the all-important Burundese election year 2010, he founded 'PIGA PICHA 2010' an independent image bank as well as a training centre for young photographers. Mazina's visual memory shows the unvarnished reality, the political and social upheavals, the catastrophes, the despair, but also the passion and hope of the Burundians. The raw and confrontational images are not necessarily meant to shock and disturb, but hope to create a new awareness in a country where death, discrimination and violence have become nothing more than banal faits divers. This book is a testimony to Mazina's artistic-social struggle against the indifference and the collective amnesia in his country.

Book SynopsisSarajevo to Paris, fashion or reportage, deciding on the title of a book is mind-boggling. I call myself a documentary photographer that accidentally ended up doing fashion. The end of the 80s was an interesting and intense time in world history, and a particularly creative time in the world of fashion. As a young female photographer I was interested in both worlds. Thirty years later, when looking back, those two worlds documentary and fashion still define my work. Both are equally represented in my archives. This book, of my fashion work, is the first to be published. I called it Sarajevo to Paris because sometimes I would travel directly from one to the other. These two cities had a big impact on my life.Sarajevo to Paris by Marleen Daniëls captures the set before the fashion show. This robust encyclopaedia is an A-Z of designers preparing for the big moment. Over the course of 30 years she photographed backstage in Paris, London, New York and Milan.

  • THANK YOU BYE

Hopper & Fuchs THANK YOU BYE

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisTHANK YOU BYE was born out of a need to put down somewhere what I have experienced over the last five years. Although it gives the impression of a veil being lifted, it is simply a record of my personal experience. The intention, through these hundreds of photos, is to transcribe the absurd, crazy and little-known world of modelling, by means of an unpublished souvenir album of my time spent in fashion. The result is THANK YOU BYE, which owes its name to the phrase uttered by casting directors every time you walk in front of them. It recounts my moments of sadness, my anxieties, my unease, my questions, but also our laughter, our travels, our togetherness, our mutual support. Five years during which I fought not to lose myself. Thrown at the age of 18 at a speed I found hard to manage into a dimension that was not my own, I embrace all the models who pose' in this book and who, without realising it, helped me to escape. What you hold in your hands is none other than the last chance to prove that I was still worth something. When you turn the last page, you'll know that I've resigned and can finally say that I'm happy. - Clémentine Balcaen

Karwansaray BV Rails to the Front: The Role of Railways in

    7 in stock

Book Synopsis“The North can make a steam engine, locomotive, or railway car [...] You are rushing into war with one of the most powerful, ingeniously mechanical, and determined people on Earth — right at your doors.”~ William Tecumseh Sherman, 1860The military use of railways derives from their ability to move troops or materiel rapidly and, less commonly, on their use as a platform for military systems (like armoured trains and heavy artillery). Until recently, the mobility of large armies generally depended on control of railways to move reinforcements, ammunition and food, as the locomotive and railway cars proved far superior to animal-drawn equipment. In Rails to the Front, historians Augustus J. Veenendaal and H. Roger Grant capture the critical impact of railways in an abundance of conflicts worldwide, from the German revolutions in the 1840s to the Gulf War in the 1990s. This lavishly illustrated, careful study is the first of its kind in English.Trade ReviewI thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a fine addition to my collection and has shone a spotlight into a crucial aspect of military history that I should have paid better attention to in the past. * Classic Military Vehicle Magazine *This terrific book celebrates the most important innovation in the history of mankind - the railways, which took over as the main means of transport all over the world from the beginning of the Victorian era. And the impact it had was influential almost immediately in the various conflicts, although it really came into its own in the early years of the first World War. Amazing photos, an amazing slice of social history combine to make this a genuine enthusiast's delight. * Books Monthly *As modellers, we have arguably become accustomed to concentrating on ever finer details, perhaps at the expense of considering the broader picture: this book certainly counters that tendence and puts railways in a wider context. * Continental Modeller *This rather excellent publication covers the use of railways from its inception for military purposes...Both armoured trains and rail artillery receive coverage, with some interesting photos. This book is worth the price for the artwork alone. * Scale Military Modelling International Magazine *This book is an excellent value for the money. It fulfills its broad purpose of presenting the role of railways in warfare and provides an excellent launching platform for those wishing to know more about detailed individual circumstances. * Railroad History *This is an authoritative work, engagingly written, attractively designed, and given its nice price, easily recommendable as the go-to work in its field. * The Lexington Quarterly *

Book SynopsisWhen Egyptians began demonstrating against the regime of President Hosni Mubarak on 25 January 2011, few could anticipate that the demonstrations would grow into a revolution to astonish the world. Millions of Egyptians were soon joining in every day in cities across the country, but Tahrir Square became the beating heart of the revolution, its center, its life force, and its spirit, a spirit that was peaceful, inclusive, creative, and determined. Swedish photographer Mia Gr ndahl returned day after day to the square, to record the incredible tent city within a city that would not budge until the president did, and to capture the great humanity of the revolution that impressed Cairo, Egypt, and the world. This book presents a selection of her moving photographs from those historic days, along with the testimony in words of some of the people who were there.
