  • Recollections of a Hidden Laos: A Photographic

Silkworm Books / Trasvin Publications LP Recollections of a Hidden Laos: A Photographic

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSo begins this lovely volume of exquisite photographs from Laos, a country whose remote regions are still hidden away to all but a few inquisitive scholars and venturesome travelers. The capital city of Vientiane and far-flung regions of the country are richly illustrated in 150 color images. The photographs recount the author's personal journey to towns and villages in the 1990s, portraying ethnic minorities and lowlanders, their traditional life and work, and the natural environment and terrain. Apart from a descriptive introduction, the captions provide the only text. The author observes signs of modernization with each subsequent visit--traditional dress replaced by Western clothing, forests destroyed by a new road. The book provides a rare and nuanced glimpse into the country and people of Laos as they stand at the crossroads of change.

  • Jessica Todd Harper: Here

    Damiani Jessica Todd Harper: Here

    5 in stock

Book Synopsis"A 'wrong' family moment that is full of truth." Like seventeenth century Dutch painters who made otherwise ordinary interior scenes appear charged with meaning, Jessica Todd Harper looks for the worth in everyday moments. The characters in her imagery are the people around her- her friends, herself, family- but it is not so much they who are important as the way in which they are organized and lit. A woman helping her child practice the piano is not a particularly sacred moment but as in a Vermeer painting, the way the composition and lighting influence the content suggests that perhaps it is.Most of the time everyday scenes don’t mean anything to us- in fact, it is a modern truism that we seek to be distracted from them. We scroll through our phones rather than be alone with our thoughts, our selves or even our families. This collection of photographs makes use of what is right in front of me, what is here, a place that many of us came to contemplate especially during the pandemic. Beauty, goodness and truth can reveal themselves in daily life, much like in Kant’s notion of the Sublime or simply in the Dutch paintings of everyday domestic scenes that are somehow lit up with purport. Our unexamined or even boring surroundings can sometimes be illuminating.

  • Gunnar Smoliansky 1933–2019

Henrik Nygren Design Gunnar Smoliansky 1933–2019

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSwedish photographer Gunnar Smoliansky has devoted himself to the medium since the 1950s, originally working as a photographer’s assistant and attending courses under Christer Strömholm. Between 1956 and 1965 he worked as an industrial photographer and since 1965 practiced as an independent artist. Smoliansky works exclusively in black and white and develops his photographs by hand in the darkroom. Stockholm has been the focus of Smoliansky’s photographic world, particularly the areas of Södermalm and Saltsjö-Boo where he has lived and worked for most of his life. This book explores Smoliansky’s photographic oeuvre, focusing on nine publications originally created by Smoliansky in cooperation with art director Henrik Nygren between 2002 and 2008. These include both slim volumes and an imposing monograph. With one exception, all were originally published in Swedish, but all have been translated to English for this publication. A newly written tenth chapter brings this essential artistic career up to the present day. Despite the range of themes and material, the intention throughout has been the same: to try to shine a light on a man of integrity, an artist whose life work was as unique as it was consistent - Henrik Nygren.Table of ContentsPrologue • Chapter 1. Book Synopsis"The Alps: A Bird's-Eye View" is a major project with completely new aerial photographs of the entire Alpine chain and up to date texts from experts in the world of geology; climate change; geography; Alpine tourism; natural environment; and, more. This is physically a big hardback book - 512 pages, 28cm wide, 37.5cm tall and weighing 4.95 kilos. The book has been compiled under the patronage of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) and includes a foreword by the Director-General of UNESCO, and introductions by Sir Chris Bonington and the Alpine Convention. The Alps are a single geographical and geological entity, yet they also constitute a culturally and climatically very diverse region. Besides the Mediterranean region, the Alps are the second largest ecosystem in Europe. The Alpine region today is home to 8 million people who speak eight major languages with many dialects and who are divided into eight nations. "The Alps: A Bird's-Eye View" is a stunning collection of new aerial photographs with 250 colour images (of which 200 are double spread) showing the Alpine region as it has never been seen before in one collection. From the air, professional photographer, mountaineer and pilot, Matevz Lenarcic has captured the diversity of the 1200 km between Monaco and Vienna. He reveals the variety of the region, including the contrasting Verdon gorges in France; the Mont Blanc glaciers; and, the granite walls of Bregaglia, the baroque ridges of the Dolomites and the light coloured limestone faces of the Julian Alps. Whilst the majority of the book is devoted to stunning photography, there is a significant contribution in text with chapters including the Alps as the birds see them; the myth about avalanches; landscapes of wine; geology; glacier changes; climate and expected changes; water, forests, flora & fauna; protected areas; landscape; population; and, tourism. The contributing authors are all specialists in their field and have been brought together to showcase the Alpine region in a complete work of photography and text.
