Whittles Publishing Untangling the Knot, Belugas and Bears: My
Book SynopsisThe beginning of the author's adventure with a camera - filming wildlife across the world for the BBC Natural History Unit and other major TV companies - began in 1978 when he joined the RSPB's film unit. Untangling the Knot gives an in-depth look into what is involved in capturing the sequences needed for a natural history film, using comprehensive diaries and over 200 photographs. Mike describes the stresses of international flying with 20 cases of film equipment, sometimes alone, to distant corners of the world. The hardships of living and working for weeks in remote regions, avoiding tropical diseases, the onslaught of forest insects, long hours of waiting from dawn to dusk, and of frustration and disappointment when the elements or circumstances conspired against him. There are times of great elation too, when animal behaviour never seen before is captured on film. Working with top biologists and highly-experienced pilots was an essential partnership in understanding the subject to be filmed, often in remote regions where the challenge was reaching the subject in rainforest canopies, on remote islands or in featureless arctic tundra. In a career spanning 35 years, several of the programmes in which he was involved have won major awards. He describes filming Attenborough in Paradise in New Guinea with Sir David Attenborough as a career highlight, where he filmed behaviour of Birds of Paradise that had never been seen before. His last programme, Jewelled Messengers was the fulfilment of an ambition to make the ultimate film on hummingbirds with producer Paul Reddish, using the latest high-speed, high-definition cameras, and which was shot mainly in Brazil and Ecuador. The story concludes when he realizes his dream of visiting the Ross Sea region of the Antarctic. Mike considers himself lucky to have worked in so many spectacular regions of the world and this book enables readers to travel with him and share his incredible experiences.

Book SynopsisThe images reproduced in this book are photographed by Chloe Sells in Botswana, using large and medium format cameras that use film. The work is later printed in a traditional darkroom. The darkroom process is spontaneous and consuming, layering light, texture and form to interact with photographic alchemy. Some of the images are drawn on after they have been printed with paint and marker. Because of Sells’ method of working, each outcome is unique.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Colour Films in Britain: The Eastmancolor
Book SynopsisThe story of Eastmancolor's arrival on the British filmmaking scene is one of intermittent trial and error, intense debate and speculation before gradual acceptance. This book traces the journey of its adoption in British Film and considers its lasting significance as one of the most important technical innovations in film history. Through original archival research and interviews with key figures within the industry, the authors examine the role of Eastmancolor in relation to key areas of British cinema since the 1950s; including its economic and structural histories, different studio and industrial strategies, and the wider aesthetic changes that took place with the mass adoption of colour. Their analysis of British cinema through the lens of colour produces new interpretations of key British film genres including social realism, historical and costume drama, science fiction, horror, crime, documentary and even sex films. They explore how colour communicated meaning in films ranging from the Carry On series to Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979), from Lawrence of Arabia (1962) to A Passage to India (1984), and from Goldfinger (1964) to 1984 (1984), and in the work of key directors and cinematographers of both popular and art cinema including Nicolas Roeg, Ken Russell, Ridley Scott, Peter Greenaway and Chris Menges.Trade ReviewRooted in detailed primary research into aesthetics, production practices, technologies and institutions, Colour Films in Britain, provides a comprehensive and illuminating consideration of the adoption, diffusion and popularization of colour in British cinema from the mid-1950s. -- Duncan Petrie, University of York, UKColour Films in Britain is a landmark study of the transition to colour that occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. No other book has yet tackled this transition with such depth, breadth and precision. The collaborative efforts of Sarah Street, Keith M. Johnston, Paul Frith and Carolyn Rickards are a model for research that I hope will soon be taken up in other national and transnational contexts. -- Joshua Yumibe, Michigan State University, USATable of ContentsIntroduction Section 1: What is Eastmancolor? 1. Book SynopsisIllustrated throughout with archival photographs, this book examines the photographic and film practice of the Canadian government, the Anglican Church of Canada, and the Hudson's Bay Company, the three major colonial institutions involved in the arctic and sub-arctic.Trade ReviewIn many ways, Geller’s Northern Exposures is ground-breaking. It is the first book to describe and document, with many superb illustrations, some of the extensive camera work done in the Canadian North; it is also the first book ... to provide a critique of certain key institutions and individuals whose images have constructed and conditioned southern Canadians’ perceptions of the North. But I want to begin with one aspect of this book that deserves special praise – the illustrations ... readers owe Geller and UBC Press much thanks ... each image is nicely subtitled and perfectly placed ... MP-NCA Uni of North Carolina In This Timeless Time Living and Dying on Death
Book SynopsisIn this stark and powerful book, Bruce Jackson and Diane Christian explore life on Death Row in Texas and in other states, as well as the convoluted and arbitrary judicial processes that populate all Death Rows. They document the capriciousness of capital punishment and capture the day-to-day experiences of Death Row inmates in the official ‘non-period’ between sentencing and execution.Trade ReviewIf opponents of the death penalty were to choose one book for their cause, this could well be it. . . . Jackson and Christian write in a direct, journalistic style, poignant and to the point. This book will appeal to those with a specific interest in criminal justice and the death penalty as well as curious casual readers.""- Library Journal Starred Review;""Jackson and Christian's book gives some of those men a face. Therein lays its beauty.""- The Rag Blog;""All readers concerned about the U.S. prison system and capital punishment will benefit from this important work.""- ForeWord;""In This Timeless Time is as close to perfection as a publisher can produce.""- The Federal Lawyer;""An unflinching commentary on the judicial system and the fates of the men they met on the Row. . . . They made a body of work no one else could.""- Prison Photography blog;""A uniquely powerful contribution to the literature on prisons, criminal justice, and capital punishment in the United States. . . . Not to be missed.""- Journal of Southern History;""In this comprehensive, well-crafted book . . . Jackson and Christian build upon the photographs and interviews from death row in Texas that yielded their 1979 book and documentary Death Row (DVD included). Here, photos and text reveal inmate life, discuss capital punishment, and share the fate of each man: execution, a commuted sentence, parole, or after more than two decades, an innocent verdict. . . . [T]he book raises important questions about the judicial system and the practice of capital punishment in our society.""- Publishers Weekly;""The book deals in emotion magnificently. . . . A moving piece of photojournalism and a fitting argument against the death penalty.""- Texas Books In Review;""In This Timeless Time is a cry of the heart . . . and should become the definitive book on the medieval cruelty of our Death Rows. Once read, none of us can turn our view away and say, 'We did not know.""- Michael Ratner, attorney and president emeritus of the Center for Constitutional RightsIn This Timeless Time presents images and words of condemned men who are otherwise abstractions and provides a compelling history of death row over the last thirty years. Nothing like this book exists, or could ever exist again. I could not recommend this book more strongly.--Billy Sothern, death penalty lawyer and author of Down In New Orleans: Reflections from a Drowned CityWith absolute fairness and profound honesty, Bruce Jackson and Diane Christian carry us into the tragic world of a group of prisoners living on a Texas Death Row. Through unforgettable stories and photos, we come to feel the suffering, guilt, and confusion of these men, as well as their inextinguishable human dignity. We are also given a vital lesson in the strange element of chance that lies at the foundation of capital punishment, our correction system's 'most significant act.' This powerful book calls us to reflect on the extraordinary circumstance of prisoners not 'doing time' but waiting for time to run out on Death Rows all over America.--Sister Helen PrejeanIn In This Timeless Time, authors Bruce Jackson and Diane Christian have accomplished something quite remarkable. Granted virtually unprecedented access to one of the darkest, least-seen sectors of American society (Death Row), and they have emerged from this foreboding place with something terrible and beautiful. For what is more terrible than this modern-day place of skulls, this (to quote a former Supreme Court justice, Harry Blackmun) ""machinery of death""?Beauty? Where can beauty be in such a haunting, fatal place? And then one looks at photos, black and white, showing men at play, men in tight discussion, men with visages of hopelessness, loss, and hope. Yes, hope. The access shown here, to make such a project possible with few restrictions, would scarcely happen today. The authors reveal a Death Row (in Texas's infamous Ellis Unit) that was, as horrible as it was, light years better than the bitter present.A revelation came to me as I gazed at these pictures from the recent past, and over a thousand miles away: every death row is different; and every death row is the same.Jackson and Christian have pulled back the proverbial curtain so that all can see the American Way of Death.--Mumia Abu-Jamal, co-author of The Classroom and the CellIn the over twenty years since Bruce Jackson and Diane Christian's work on a Texas death row began, correcting the injustices of capital punishment has been much too slow. In This Timeless Time underscores how urgent and critical it is to give voice to the voiceless, hope to the hopeless. This first-rate work speaks to our shared need as Americans to right the wrong that is capital punishment.--John Lewis, U.S. congressman and civil rights leaderMost us us have formed whatever opinion we hold on the death penalty without any direct experience of what life is like inside an institution specially designed by trial and error to utterly dehumanize its inhabitants (and by inevitable, toxic osmosis, its employees) in order that WE THE PEOPLE are able to take their lives at a given time on a given date. Pray that In This Timeless Time is as close as you ever get.--Steve Earle, singer-songwriter and author of I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive""These photos rewind, then freeze, time, catapulting me back to a place that still invades the core of who and what I am today, nearly thirty-four years later. Most everyone in this book was executed. Most everyone said they were innocent. I did too . . . and I was. 'It's not about innocence or guilt, Kerry,' Bruce Jackson told me in 1979 as I peered out of my cell during our first interview. 'It's about what we do as a society.' I didn't get it back then, but I do now. With this book, Bruce and Diane have captured the face of America's death penalty machine.--Kerry Max Cook, former prisoner ""Cook, Ex: 600,"" exonerated through DNA testing after serving 22 years

Wayne State University Press The Queen Next Door
Book SynopsisLinda Solomon met Aretha Franklin in 1983 when she was just beginning her career as a photo journalist and newspaper columnist. The Queen Next Door is a book full of firsts as Solomon was invited not only to capture historical events in Aretha'smusic career showcasing Detroit, but to join in with the Franklin family's most cherished moments.Trade Review“Aretha and I grew up together. She was the sister I never had. Her parents were parents of both of us. She is more than a Queen of Soul. She’s a Queen of Caring, a Queen of Social Justice. She stood with Dr. King and she stood for Nelson Mandela. This beautiful book captures her essence.– Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Jr., founder and president of Rainbow PUSH Coalition”Linda’s got ‘it’"—what a great artist!– Tony Bennett, entertainer”To most, Aretha Franklin is an icon. But to Linda, she was also a friend. And Linda’s intimate photographs of Aretha reveal the true lady beyond the legend. What a gift for all her fans!– Meredith Vieira, television journalist and host”A picture is worth a thousand words, and with Linda no words were needed with she and Aretha. A powerful, emotional journey of photos that are beyond words and inspires us all to ‘say a little prayer.’ Thank you, Linda Solomon!”– Isiah Thomas, Basketball Hall of Fame inductee and Detroit Pistons champion”Linda Solomon is a Michigan treasure. She photographs celebrities and friends with equal enthusiasm, all the while devoting much of her time teaching others to enjoy the profession she loves.”– James J. Blanchard, former Governor for the State of Michigan”I feel like I’ve known Linda all my life. She intuitively seems to know how to catch that déjà vu moment with her camera lens—giving the pictures a unique and special touch like no other. She amazes me.”– Kim Novak, screen actress and visual artist”Her voice, her presence lives and breathes in her music which is kicking it to this day in my world. And now add some beautiful visuals. Thanks Linda for the wonderful images of the Queen of Soul.”– Tim Allen, actor and comedian”Aretha Franklin trusted very few journalists—a handful of us were lucky enough to be in that number, and that includes Detroit-based photojournalist Linda Solomon. You can see in the Queen of Soul’s soft, unguarded expressions in Linda’s photographs in The Queen Next Door that she was at ease with her. Linda had unprecedented access, but she didn’t overwhelm Aretha with a barrage of shots, instead capturing sensitive, evocative photos of a woman with the mystique of an icon, who was also the down-home woman ‘next door.’ This trove of beautiful images is a must for fans of the Queen.”– Susan Whitall, editor of Joni on Joni: Interviews and Encounters with Joni Mitchell and author of Fever: Little Willie John’s A Fast Life, Mysterious Death and the Birth of Soul”In The Queen Next Door, Linda Solomon gives us a rare photojournalistic glimpse into the life, lady, and legacy of one of the greatest talents of all time, Aretha Franklin—the Queen of Soul. Like Motown, Aretha Franklin is synonymous with the city of Detroit; she represented Detroit royalty and realness at the same time. While Aretha never signed to Motown Records, she was undoubtedly part of the Motown family and, like my grandmother, Esther Gordy Edwards, founder of the Motown Museum, Aretha used her celebrity to elevate the city she loved, Detroit.”– Robin R. Terry, chairwoman and CEO, Motown Museum”I met Linda Solomon in the early eighties while enjoying one of the Queen’s lavish parties. Linda was very charming and so professional in capturing that perfect and special moment. Linda will be always be special to all of us in the Queen’s court.”– Beverly Bradley, Aretha’s close friend”No one but Linda Solomon could have captured in moving words and photographs the real Queen, the Aretha Franklin who was sister-mama-daughter-friend, the woman who was larger-than-life star in her career, but down-to-earth Detroiter at home. Linda has given those who loved Ms. Franklin an intimate and needed tour of life off the stage.”– Rochelle Riley, essayist, arts advocate, and editor of The Burden: African Americans and the Enduring Impact of Slavery (Wayne State University Press, 2017)”[. . .] the 140 photographs collected in the volume reveal the Aretha Franklin who lived outside the spotlight, sure to intrigue music lovers and pop culture enthusiasts alike.”– Danielle Ballantyne, Foreword Reviews”A unique and inherently fascinating visual tribute to one of America's greatest vocal talents of her day, "The Queen Next Door: Aretha Franklin, An Intimate Portrait" is an extraordinary, coffee-table sized volume that should be considered a 'must' for the legions of Aretha Franklin fans, and would prove to be an immediate and enduringly popular addition to personal, community and academic library collections.”– Mary Cowper, Midwest Book Review
