Book SynopsisJewellery art is a small but easily discernible voice amid the great choir that is the art scene. It has been the impetus for innovation and a seismograph for current discourse within the applied arts for several decades. Now, for the first time, the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts is presenting its holdings of modern jewellery, ranging from the mid-twentieth century to the present day. Analysed and assembled, it provides insights into the multifaceted oeuvres of around 180 jewellery artists from around the world. The collection is broadly representative of the international developments in jewellery art and as such it especially grants a special view of the approaches from GDR before the unification. Images by 11 photographers from Leipzig show just how varied and versatile the perception of jewellery on a person can be. Text in English and German.

  • Joyful Architecture: European Architectural

    AVEdition Joyful Architecture: European Architectural

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA catalogue for an exhibition of photographs submitted for the architekurbild award 2019 on the theme of "Joyful Architecture", which explores the playful in the built environment. This travelling show opens at the German Architecture Museum (DAM) on May 3rd 2019. The European Architectural Photography Prize architekturbild has been awarded every other year since 1995. The theme for 2019 is "Joyful Architecture". The most common expectations of architecture can be described in terms such as usability, urban planning, economy, sustainability and aesthetics. The fact that architecture can also trigger well-being, induce happiness, be playful, and have a sense of humour, is (rarely) considered. This award highlights architecture - whether subtle or striking - which is joyful in shaping and positively influencing the built environment and those who move within it. Text in English and German.

Book SynopsisAccepting the steirischer herbst invitation to its 50th anniversary, in March 2017 I entered the room where all regional, national and international press releases concerning the festival have been filed for the past fifty years. A total of around 100,000 cut-out articles glued on A4 sheets or whole newspaper pages folded in A4 format. When I opened the first files from 1967, some of the articles dropped out as the glue had dried out over time. On the back of one article, that was cut out at a bit of an angle, there was a remarkable picture in the bleed area that had no bearing whatsoever on steirischer herbst, but which had been unintentionally archived too. I then went about viewing the archive for other strays. You find them in practically all archives and they open up parallel side stories.Peter Piller For more than twenty years Peter Piller (born 1968 in Germany) has been making peripheral excursions, or Peripheriewanderungen (Periphery Walks) in various European cities. In Hamburg, the Ruhr region, Bonn, Graz, and Barcelona he has explored small sections of areas marking the outer borders of urban settlement in cities and regions of varying size. In carrying out these walks Piller follows things that catch his eye as well as cues from his memory, ending his excursion once he feels unable to take in anything more. When something particularly interests him on one of his explorations, he departs from his determined routes, wanders around through the area, or even simply waits for a key moment. Archives of photographs result, which he subsequently expands upon in his studio with his Erinnerungszeichnungen (Drawings from Memory). In these mental maps the medium of drawing supplements that of photography and vice versa.

Book SynopsisStories of Chinese Insect PetsThis project deals with a thousand-year-old tradition that lives on in China: raising crickets to hear them sing or see them fight. Laurence Kubski spent weeks in the country to make this series of images, starting in the largest insect market in Shanghai. She followed cricket hunters in the shadows of remote cornfields in Shandong Province and met mafia members buying millions of yuans' worth of crickets for illegal fighting. Immersing herself in this tradition, she learned the symbolism of flowers in traditional Chinese painting to compose her still life photographs. With a text by Laurence Kubski.

  • Maximilian Stejskal - Folklig Idrott

Edition Patrick Frey Maximilian Stejskal - Folklig Idrott

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisMaximilian Stejskal (1906-1991), an ethnologist and gymnastics teacher from Helsinki, carried out a study for his PhD thesis on folk athletic contests amongst Finland's Swedish-speaking male rural population in the early 20th century. For his study Stejskal biked across large swaths of southern and eastern Finland as well as Estonia for a month or two every year from 1929 to 1937 and then again in 1948, equipped with two bellows cameras and a box of photographic glass plates. On these excursions he systematically collected information about the traditional games, or folk athletics as he calls them, which were hardly practiced anymore even then. For the most part elderly farmers and craftsmen would tell him in detail about the exercises and tests of strength and courage with which they had tried to prove their virility in their younger days. According to these descriptions, their sons, relatives and farm hands were asked to perform the exercises in front of the camera so Stejskal could photograph them. During his field research, which took over 20 years, Stejskal amassed a considerable collection of documentation, which he divided up into 11 different sections, one for each excursion. It comprises over two thousand handwritten pages of travelogs, descriptions of exercises, tables, sketches, musical and phonetic recordings and 433 photographs. This book focuses on a small selection of those photographs. With texts by Maximilian Stejskal, Marie-Isabel Vogel and Alain Rappaport in English and Swedish. Marie-Isabel Vogel and Alain Rappaport are artists and scenographers based in Zu?rich.

  • Casa Verdi

    Edition Patrick Frey Casa Verdi

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisAs the clocks slowly advance towards lunchtime, some very curious lone figures can suddenly be seen shuffling across Milan's Piazza Buonarotti. One of them has a strikingly broad-brimmed hat on, which he waves in greeting, bowing benignly, elegantly, whenever an acquaintance (even if merely a supposed acquaintance) crosses his path. Another, wearing a dark tuxedo-like suit in broad daylight, puts on a face as though he were sick and tired of forever being asked for his autograph. These peculiar figures are making their way to a fancy-looking edifice, a small palace with a neo-Gothic-inspired façade. They are residents of the Casa di Riposo per Musicisti, an old-age home founded in 1896 by Giuseppe Verdi for musicians and opera singers who find themselves penniless in their sunset years whether because their passion for a labor of love made them have-nots their whole lives long or because, as Verdi put it in his modest way, they simply had less luck than I. In 1981, even before Daniel Schmid presented a deeply compassionate portrait of retired singers at the Casa Verdi in his 1984 film Il Bacio di Tosca, Swiss photographer Eric Bachmann and German journalist Christian Kämmerling put together a report on the elegiac world of this remarkable retirement home for a Swiss magazine. Casa Verdi now brings together in a single volume the bulk of Bachmann's photo archive, Kämmerling's sensitive essay, and by and large reconstructed biographies of the retired musicians and singers. What precious few biographical facts were available after the war serve here as posts between which mostly imagined life stories have now been stretched. And yet despite all the questions about the reasons for their own bad luck, there is a silver lining here at the Casa di Riposo, where those taken in need worry no more about their twilight years: Verdi bequeathed to the home which he called his finest work the cornerstone of his huge fortune, namely the rights to all his operas.

Book SynopsisBob Steffen stood out as the flamboyant star among the window dressers of stuffy postwar Bern. His exuberant backdrops for furs, fabrics and lingerie were the talk of the town, as was the globetrotting nonconformist gay bon vivant himself. Of humble origins, Steffen slept his way up, as an upscale hustler / nude model, into the jet set of the gay beau monde, blossoming out into a successful decorator who was to remain a central figure of Bern's bohemian scene up until a ripe old age. Flamboyant and brazenly promiscuous, he lived by his own rules and didn't care a fig about the norms of bourgeois society or, as a window dresser, about the standards of good taste. Art Décor delves into the rich legacy of pictures Bob Steffen left behind, exploring the kaleidoscopic facets of his life. It brings back to life the forgotten art of window-dressing as well as artists' masquerade balls, a forgotten world of the 1950s and '60s, and follows Bob on his world travels. The portraits of the born poser become a springboard for musings on the nature of posing. His affair with an Afro-American ballet dancer leads us to the remarkable history of Afro-American dance companies in Europe before and after World War II. His life is retraced in interviews and collaged snippets of conversations. Art Décor is a potpourri as lavish as Bob Steffen's store windows.

Book SynopsisJosé de Jesús Chucho León Hernández is a part of Mexico City's nightlife. For over twenty years he has been documenting the city's vibrant music scene, the carryings-on at underground venues and gay clubs, the newcomers and leavers, rising stars and departing legends. A huge cultural magnet with its population of 20 million, the Mexican metropolis is constantly reinventing its nightlife, providing a stage for those who seek the limelight and perfect hunting grounds for Chucho, whose presence and camera significantly shape the ambiance around him, to chase and capture the creatures of the night. His subjects vary from the young and beautiful to the queer; from drug- and sex-driven exuberance to Mexico's eternal and omnipresent flirtation with death. Although Chucho's work is included in some of Mexico's major collections, it has yet to receive the recognition it deserves. Vida puts José León on the map in Mexico, where international recognition is often a prerequisite for recognition at home. Chucho is influenced by the aesthetics of Mexican Catholicism as well as by fashion magazines and photobooks, which he studies obsessively. Although an autodidact, his works reveal a thoroughgoing knowledge and understanding of the history of photography and an uncanny feel for his surroundings.
