Liverpool University Press Picture Imperfect: Photography and Eugenics,
Book SynopsisDocuments and critically analyses the photographs that helped strengthen as well as bring down the Eugenics Movement. Using a large body of racial-type images and a variety of historical and archival sources, and concentrating mainly on developments in Britain, the USA and Nazi Germany, the author argues that photography, as the most powerful visual medium of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, was vital to the Eugenics Movement's success -- not only did it allow eugenicists to identify the people with superior and inferior hereditary traits, but it helped publicise and lend scientific authority to eugenicists' racial theories. The author further argues for a strong connection between the racial-type photographs that eugenicists created and the photographic images produced by nineteenth-century anthropologists and prison authorities, and that the photographic works of contemporary liberal anthropologists played a significant role in the Eugenics Movement's downfall. Besides adding to our knowledge of photography's crucial role in helping to authorise and implement some of the most controversial social policies of modern times, this book makes a major contribution to our understanding of the history of racism. Most accounts of eugenics have been written by history of science scholars, with an emphasis on the history of science and medicine. In contrast, "Picture Imperfect" looks at eugenics from the standpoint of its most significant cultural data -- racial-type photography, investigating the techniques, media forms, and styles of photography used by eugenicists, and relating these to their racial theories and their social policies and goals. Indeed, the visual archive was crucially constitutive of eugenic racial science because it helped make many of its concepts appear both intuitive as well as scientifically legitimate. Discussion of the history of the eugenics movement encompasses a wide narrative, including Nazi history, US politics, criminology and prison studies, and propaganda.Trade Review"This book makes a significant contribution to an underexamined and important topic. Eugenics had an immense (mainly negative) impact on twentieth-century social and political history, and as Anne Maxwell demonstrates this was in large part because of its use of modern visual technologies, particularly photography. This story should not be allowed to disappear from cultural memory and Anne Maxwell's careful and path-breaking scholarship will do much to keep it there." -- Simon During, Johns Hopkins University.Table of ContentsIntroduction; Racial-type Photographs in the Colonial Period; The Degenerate Face: Nineteenth-Century Prison Photographs; The Eugenics Movement Begins: Galton and the Races of Britain; Building a Healthy Nation: Eugenic Images in the United States, 1890-1935; Creating the Master Race: Photography and Racial Selection in Germany; Sub-Human Versus the Master Race: Racial-Type Photographs and Nazi Party Propaganda; Eugenics Under Fire: the Racial-type Imagery of Boas, Du Bois, Huxley and Hadden; Conclusion; Index.

La Maison de Z Wild Grass
Book SynopsisGrowing up in a small town in southern China during the strict execution of the one-child policy in the 1980s, JT witnessed the heartbreaking reality of a newborn girl being abandoned due to economic hardships. In 2014, he encountered some left-behind children while travelling, whose resilience and vitality left a deep impression on him. Reflecting on their struggles and the uncertain future they faced, JT couldn''t help but wonder about the fate of the abandoned newborn girl from childhood memory. This experience led the photographer to embark on the Wild Grass project, documenting the lives of children in unofficial orphanages across the country. JT's visits to these orphanages revealed the challenges they face, including funding shortages and a lack of specialized knowledge in caring for physically and/or mentally disabled children. Despite these obstacles, he lived among the children, seeking to understand their daily lives and provide them with a voice through photography.

APE One Head and Thousand Years
Book SynopsisThe images capture moments that arise when lost in thought, evoking a connection to memories. This sensation dwells in my chest, ascending like an elevator into my brain-the essence of my narrative. Drawing from personal experiences, I used them as the foundation. Delving into scattered memories and anxieties, I forged a nonlinear storyline centered on myself. As both narrator and subject, I embarked on a complex journey. This exploration pushed my inner and outer boundaries, confronting vulnerabilities from family ties, especially my younger sister. I faced my humanity, photographer identity and existence in the post-Soviet Muslim context.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Criticizing Photographs
Book SynopsisEmphasizing the understanding of images and their influences on how they affect our attitudes, beliefs, and actions, this fully updated sixth edition offers consequential ways of looking at images from the perspectives of photographers, critics, theoreticians, historians, curators, and editors. It invites informed conversations about meanings and implications of images, providing multiple and sometimes conflicting answers to questions such as: What are photographs? Should they be called art? Are they ethical? What are their implications for self, society, and the world? From showing how critics verbalize what they see in images and how they persuade us to see similarly, to dealing with what different photographs might mean, the book posits that some interpretations are better than others and explains how to deliberate among competing interpretations. Key Publishing Ltd Class 47s: Inverness to Dover Western Docks,
Book SynopsisFollowing on from Class 47s: Inverness to Penzance: 1982-85, this volume picks up the story and runs to the end of the summer 1986 timetable. It was a period of change, as the first 47s to be withdrawn started to fall by the wayside in the spring of 1986, since seriously damaged crash victims were no longer likely to be rebuilt. The first non-crash-damaged locos were withdrawn - sacrificed to provide a spares pool for the others. It was also a time of change with regard to how trains were heated, as steam heat became rare south of Hadrian's Wall. Christmas 1985 was a watershed as the relief trains were now routinely electrically heated, with the latest ETH conversions emerging from Crewe Works from November 1985. In 1986, regular trips to Scotland were required to sample the delights of steam heat. Further changes came in summer 1986 as InterCity started to operate some routes in Kent, and Dover Western Docks was now on the map. With over 200 images, this volume provides a visual journey of the Class 47s in 1985-86.

Prestel Michael Kenna: Rouge
Book SynopsisMore than twenty years after its initial publication, Michael Kenna's seminal collection of photographs of the Ford River Rouge industrial complex is now available in a new, revised, and expanded edition. One of the world's most acclaimed photographers working exclusively in black-and-white, Michael Kenna has traveled the world to create stunning, magical images of nature and manmade objects. Known for the ethereal tone and incredibly nuanced detail of his photographs, Kenna is also a chronicler of environmental degradation. His images of an auto plant outside of Detroit, Michigan, are some of his best-known works. Long out of print, Rouge has been brought back to life with a spectacular new design, an authoritative essay by art historian James Steward, and many previously unpublished images that were part of the original series. As the city of Detroit struggles to reclaim its heritage as an American commercial and artistic hub, these photographs resonate more than ever with the stark realities and hidden beauty of the industrial landscape.
