  • Australia Through Time Abandoned Perth: Memories and Photos of the Lost

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this beautifully photographed book, the author has captured abandoned places in emotive form: places as dark as time; history forgotten in the folds of the subconscious mind; beauty in decay, a presentation of life open to our personal interpretations. Atmospheric scenes unfold before the light of torches, with glass crunching underfoot, complementing the unremitting sound of dripping water. Creative wall art decorations attract attention, bordering the natural and unnatural worlds with a broad range of colours and exuding micro-organisms with compelling effects. The author describes urbexing - the pursuit of images of the abandoned and ruined - as a drug, a way of life as powerful as a state of mind. This is her world - this is Perth.

Heritage House Publishing Co Ltd Portrait of Calgary

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThere is a lot more to Calgary than its reputation as an oil boom town might suggest. With the Bow River coursing through the city and the 1988 Olympic ski jumps perched on a ridge to the south-west, Calgary is situated in a diverse landscape. A vibrant downtown, a legendary Stampede and more outdoor activities within easy reach than you can shake a hiking stick at all give Canada''s Cowtown much more to display than spurs and Smithbilts. Andrew Bradley provides dozens of full-colour photographs to the sites and scenes of the city. This spectacular photographic tour introduces the best Calgary has to offer, while accompanying text provides great information on what makes the city unique. Whether it is the rolling foothills just outside of town, the jagged crags of the Rocky Mountains or the vast and diverse architecture, this book provides a sample of everything.

  • Yes Yes We're Magicians

Figure 1 Publishing Yes Yes We're Magicians

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA brilliantly curated book of mid-20th Century found photographs collected and arranged by acclaimed photographer Jonah Samson. Yes Yes We're Magicians is a compilation of anonymous, vintage black-and-white photographs mostly found on eBay from the personal collection of the Canadian artist, collector and writer Jonah Samson. Titled after a line from Samuel Beckett's play, "Waiting for Godot", the dominant mood of the book recalls Beckett's take on human existence as tragicomic. Samson, too, reflects on the absurdity of life through slapstick and dark humor, and a warmhearted affection for the mysteries of human gestures. Involved in all aspects of making the book, Samson has created a carefully orchestrated narrative flow between various kinds of vernacular photographs. Whether a blurry snapshot or a formal portrait, the images draw out the uncanny and magical qualities of photographs. Free of any description, the compelling pictures are allowed to speak for themselves. They are often imperfect, with figures disappearing into misty and watery surfaces, and the details of time and place becoming obscured. Establishing the mood at the beginning with a mysterious color photograph of an erupting volcano, the book interweaves forgotten moments from the past where incidents of the celebratory, melancholic, surreal and bizarre are put into dialogue. As an artist who often reworks found photographs, Jonah Samson brings a distinctive sensibility to this book and treats the form as an artwork in itself. AUTHOR: Jonah Samson lives on Cape Breton Island in eastern Canada. His photographic artworks have been exhibited widely and he has produced several artist books, including Another Happy Day published by Presentation House Gallery.

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is a reverberant homage to the country of Tibet which inhabits and inspires the author. It is also a living testimony to the pilgrims who ambulate this holy land, a circumstantiation of their ardent faith, and of their desire to be free from the samsaric cycles and of the karma that perpetually propels and nourishes the Dharma Path of the earth''s ever-recurrent planetary rounds. More importantly, this volume becomes for those who peruse it, a powerful guide for meditation, reflection and comprehension for the different stages of our evolution. Moreover, it shows the path towards the Realisation of what we are called to become, as beings who are Divinely human. Behind each of the author''s visionary picture-words, is occulted a Truth which if understood, can reveal the path to follow in order to attain the Perfection of our Being, as well as the realization of a Divine humanity that seeks purely to express itself and to grow to maturity within each one of us. • The islanders

Jacana Media (Pty) Ltd The islanders

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisWhen an elderly person dies, a library vanishes, says a Mozambican proverb. Nowhere is this more poignant than in Ilha de Mozambique. There are centuries of history among the island's coral stone town and macuti (palm leaf) huts, with stories that need to be told, but this time by the people and not by the historians. "My first visit to the Ilha was in 1977 and I fell in love with everything about it; but mostly the light. It was deserted, as most of the Portuguese inhabitants left during the transitional government, and yet magical. I returned many times after the first visit. As a result, my first book, called Muipiti, was published in 1983. Sadly, soon after that, the civil war started. I was no longer able to visit safely. I waited 28 years before I finally did in 2012, and set up home. "This time round I became more aware of the people. I wanted to capture their lives and memories, to pay homage to them and give them a name and a voice before it was too late. Through their words and my photographs I could understand a little about their struggle and their frustrations. The more I got to know them the more determined I became. At first there were many more women eager to talk about their lives than men. Most of the men were away, working to support the family. Sadly, in some ways quite broken from their hard life. I found the women surprisingly free to talk about their lives, their conquests and their proud seductive powers. The cross mixing of families, sometimes intermarriage for opportunistic economic reasons, kept these families linked and protected. I discovered that black, white and Indian marry and have children. Muslim mothers accept Christian sons-in-law and daughters who convert to Catholicism for opportunistic reasons." The island people are proud and love their "Ilha" and their way of life and culture. This book shares their passion and is a tribute to Ilha's special, resilient, warm people.

  • These are the things that sit with us

Jacana Media (Pty) Ltd These are the things that sit with us

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book makes visible undocumented everyday experiences that shaped the lives of ordinary South Africans during the country's brutal and painful past. It is a record of things that "sit" within all of us. By sharing their memories, the storytellers map the scope of the wider, and difficult, conversation about the meaning of justice and the missing parts of the discourse of reconciliation in South Africa. It creates a space for a conversation about South Africa's history and what it means to talk to and to hear the other within the context of this history. In publishing each story in Xhosa, Afrikaans and English, we hope that the book will stimulate conversation among South Africans across languages. We hope that it will enable South Africans to connect with one another in a manner that seeks mutual understanding about the complicated aspects of our shared history and its continuing impact on the lives of individuals and communities. It is for this reason that we have compiled the collection of stories in this book. Stories - people narrating their memories of life under apartheid - can help introduce an alternative understanding of the painful aspects of their traumatic pasts. Twenty years after the TRC, this book is testament to our understanding that justice and reconciliation is not merely an event or a legal process but an on-going process that requires people to talk publicly about the effects of colonialism and apartheid on South Africans, and the need to listen to one another's stories. The book gives publicity to undocumented everyday experiences that shaped the lives of ordinary South Africans during this country's brutal and painful past. As such, it is an effort to depict a conversation about the meaning of transformation. We hope that by sharing their memories in this book, the storytellers will contribute towards a deeper understanding of the suffering that underpins this country and shapes our contemporary dispensation.Trade Review`The cycle of hurt and bitterness needs to be broken. It is hoped that telling these stories may help to do that by making visible the lingering pain of apartheid. By publishing these stories, a small part of the healing may begin - for the storytellers and for all South Africans.' Betina Wyngaard `Things happen, people tell stories about them. Then - life passes quickly -the events and stories are faintly remembered or totally forgotten. But in the black communities of South Africa perhaps we remember our stories for a little longer than other people do. After all, for so many years now, we have owned our stories while owning so little else.' Ellen Kuzwayo (1990)

Book SynopsisTake only photographs, leave only footprints. But if one's own photographs don't quite do justice to the towering granites, thundering waterfalls, and spectacular vistas of Yosemite, then this lovely little volume of photographs makes a superb complement. Highlights include Yosemite Valley, the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias and Wawona, Tuolumne Meadows, Glacier Point, and the high country. Ryan Alonzo's spectacular shots are accompanied by the key information visitors want to remember and share.Trade ReviewFrom National Parks Traveler: "I really appreciate this small homage to such an amazing place. Trying to show Yosemite is always a challenge, but Alonzo successfully reveals the diversity of canyon, cliff, and peak. Working for a decade in the park has taken Alonzo into areas not normally documented, and many of his locations are new, unusual, or just seen with a different eye and a different aspect. There are intimate details of natural processes, like the spring redbuds over a raging torrent and a carpet of golden-coined aspen leaves after a rain. His detail of bluish water pouring over amber granite is gorgeous...Alonzo's captions are long enough to describe what's happening, but short enough to give a lot of white space around his photos. There's also a wonderful twilight two-page panoramic of the Cathedral Range, with the peaks named: there's a lot of country outside of the Valley. The size works well too: this is not a coffee table book, but an intimate 8"X7" hardcover with a soft varnish that feels great to the fingers." --Patrick Cone

Book SynopsisThis delightful little book provides the ideal pause for contemplating the special qualities and values of Yosemite National Park, as well as other parks and wilderness. Each dazzling full-color photograph, many of them new for this tenth anniversary edition, is paired with an original quote or newly selected classic quote about nature, the environment, or America's national parks. Includes a new foreword by former Yosemite National Park superintendent Mike Tollefson and the insights of writers, scientists, poets, and leaders such as: David Brower Gary Snyder Rachel Carson Bernard Devoto John Muir Albert Einstein Diane Ackerman Terry Tempest Williams Edward Abbey Franklin D. Roosevelt Fyodor Dostoevsky Cedric Wright Marcel Proust Shelton Johnson Julia Parker Pete Hamill Sir John Lubbock Dayton Duncan Robinson Jeffers Margaret Eissler Wallace Stegner Ralph Waldo Emerson Henry David Thoreau Baba Dioum Margaret Murie Rainer Maria RilkeTrade ReviewSacramento New Thought Examiner, August 5, 2014: "Between one breath and the next-between one shutter click and the next--a breeze has moved a branch, the light source has shifted--and Yosemite is born anew... It is apparent to the casual observer why Frye has gained a following over the years. Yosemite holds such a deep meaning and purpose to him he is compelled to share his emotions. Some photographs are clean, precise and exacting in their focus that they appear to have been etched in a three-dimensional medium. Others have the slow shutter blurring of colors and lines to appear to be created through watercolor. Each captured moment is unique and arresting--as you turn the pages of this lovely book your eyes are held... For this reader, the meditation happens on seeing, feeling and communing with each photograph. " Mother Nature Network, August 22, 2014: "This summer marks the 150th anniversary of the Yosemite Grant Act, which set aside the first portion of the park for future generations and paved the way for the creation of the revered U.S. National Park System. One of the best ways to celebrate our first national park is to visit it yourself, but for all the armchair travelers out there, there's "Yosemite Meditations." ... [B]e sure to buy a copy to further experience the expansive beauty of Yosemite!" Vividlife.me, August 2014: "Although I have never been to Yosemite, I found myself transported cross country to what looks to be one of the most gloriously beautiful places on the planet. "Yosemite Meditations" is the work of photographer Michael Frye whose eye for capturing the essence of the place is highly attuned...This tenth anniversary version of the book is an exceptional companion whatever path you traverse."

Book SynopsisThe Penn Museum's first archaeological expedition to Iran took place in 1931, when Erich F. Schmidt excavated the Bronze Age site of Tepe Hissar near the town of Damghan and the monumental buildings of the pre-Islamic Sasanian Palace. In this part of his adventurous and courageous life Schmidt, then a young German WWI veteran who had received his Ph.D. degree under Franz Boas at Columbia University, documented the project with nearly 2,600 culturally significant photos—many under far from ideal conditions—of desert and mountain tribes, the sites, government administrators, and a full panoply of the people he encountered from Fara (Iraq), Damghan, Tepe Hissar, Persepolis, including aerial reconnaissance. Gürsan-Salzmann has selected 64 memorable and instructive prints from the Museum's archives for the book's interior and has assembled dozens more from the Schmidt Collection, Chicago's Oriental Institute, and from family members for an accompanying CD-ROM. She helps readers interpret the cultural and physical landscapes of the Iran and Iraq of nearly 75 years ago as their ethnographic and historical treasures came to light. Out of stock

Book SynopsisWorking with ordinary people who answered ads in local papers, posing them in their nondescript homes or unexceptional landscapes and using relatively simple equipment, Katy Grannan alchemizes these factors into extraordinary photographs. Disarming for their directness and for the provocative but casual nudity on display, her pictures capture the spirit of her subjects in the manner of Diane Arbus, but they also draw upon the artificial, posed tableaux of Gregory Crewdson and, indeed, art history. The posture of the tattooed and tanned (and nude) figure in "Mike," a 2003 portrait which appeared in the 2004 Whitney Biennial, resembles nothing so much as the awkward repose of the desert nomad in Henri Rousseau's "Sleeping Gypsy." In this first monograph, over half of the photographs are previously unpublished, providing a fresh depth to our understanding of this already widely known and accomplished young artist. Sitting on a dirt road in a knit bikini, standing defiantly in a corner of a cheaply paneled living room, leaning languidly against a chain-link fence, Grannan's photoraphs convey the dark side that we all have as well as the need to be recognized as unique individuals.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisEvery photographer, from weekend enthusiast to professional, can learn by studying the "greats". In Why Photographs Work, author/photographer George Barr analyzes fifty striking images by some of the world's top photographers. Accompanying Barr's analysis of each image is an explanation by the photographer describing the circumstances of making the image, including not only the how, but also the why. Also included is each photographer's biography, a reference to his or her websites and publications, and brief technical descriptions of the equipment used in making each image. With guidance from Barr, we learn to decipher that certain intangible "something" that makes an image go beyond the ordinary. As we gain an understanding of and appreciation for the elements that make an image truly great, we are bound to improve our own images as well. Included are images by: Charles Cramer, Bruce Barnbaum, Harald Mante, Dan Burkholder, Nick Brandt, Hans Strand, Roman Loranc, Huntington Witherill, Susan Burnstine, Ryuijie, Beth Moon, Phil Borges, Shaun O'Boyle, David Ward, Michael Levin, Michael Reichmann, Michael Kenna, Cole Thompson, George Jerkovich, Bengt Ekelberg, Sandra Davis, Brian Kosoff, Joe Lipka, Gordon Lewis, Lawrence Chrismas, Craig Richards, and many more.
