Titan Hollywood Movie Stills
Book SynopsisMarlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe... It is through the eye of the stills camera that we experience and recall some of the cinema''s most memorable events and faces. Still images are so powerful that they can easily pass for actual scenes for the movies they represent - rather than separately posed, lighted and photographed shots that may not even find their way into the finished film. This book is the most detailed and perceptive survey ever devoted to this neglected aspect of film-making. It traces the origin of stills photography during the silent era and the early development of the star system, through to the rise of the giant studios in the 1930s and their eventual decline. Finler focuses on the photographers, on the stars they photographed, and on many key films and film-makers.Hollywood Movie Stills is illustrated with hundreds of rare and unusual stills from the author''s own collection, including not only portraits and scen

Cannibal/Hannibal Publishers Belgicum
Book SynopsisBelgicum is a photo project about Belgium. It is not an objective representation of a country but rather a subjective photographical document in black and white. It's a journey of exploration into a small country in the heart of Europe, at the turn of the centuries. More than fifteen years Vanfleteren has wandered through and hunted in the 'Belgicum' territories, guided by emotion and by the love for his homeland. He made a journey through a scarred land, in search of the irretrievable identity of a country with the melancholic soul of an old nation. Over the past ten years, over 11,000 copies were sold of this international bestseller. Belgicum grew out to be a reference work in the Belgian history of photography. On the occasion of the tenth birthday of this cult book, it was reprinted. With text by David Van Reybrouck. Text in English, French and Dutch.Trade Review"Belgicum is brilliant. It's an epitaph for a country that disappeared before Vanfleteren's eyes, like a sand castle in the breaking waves." - Eric Min in De Morgen

Taschen GmbH Rome. Portrait of a City
Book SynopsisThis hefty photographic portrait of Rome brings together hundreds of photographs from the 1840s through to today to explore the extraordinary history, beauty, and art of this incomparable cultural capital. From sepia and black and white to color, these outstanding images dating from the 1840s to the present day allow us — through the eyes of such photographers as Giacomo Caneva, Pompeo Molins, Giuseppe Primoli, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Carlo Bavagnoli, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Pasquale De Antonis, Peter Lindbergh, Slim Aarons, and William Klein — to discover Rome in its many compelling guises: as the center of the Roman Empire, as one of the cradles of the Renaissance, as a favorite destination for travelers and a rich patchwork of varied neighborhoods, as the seat of the Roman Catholic Church, a stage for politics, and as the perfect backdrop for film and fashion shoots. Reaching back into illustrious archives, some of the book’s early images offer us a privileged Grand Tour glimpse of some of Rome’s most treasured landmarks, revealing the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Spanish Steps almost void of crowds. Later pictures survey the city’s contrasts—from the luxurious homes and leisure activities of the privileged to street stalls and laundry lines in the working class districts of Trastevere and Testaccio. Some documentary-style shots show us the dark power of Mussolini, the city bedecked with his own iconography and imagery of strength, athleticism, and the fatherland. As color photography comes in, the city transitions from a neo-realismo aesthetic to postwar recovery and hedonism: all the glamorous gowns, exotic celebrities, and Via Veneto café culture immortalized by Fellini. Many famous faces are here, including Louis Armstrong, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Marcello Mastroianni, Sophia Loren, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Anna Magnani, and Valentino.

Kerber Verlag Piet Niemann: Expo 2000
Book SynopsisPhotographer Piet Niemann (b. 1991) re-visited the EXPO-site and documented the current state in a comprehensive body of work, 20 years after the world fair took place. Sustainability and the successful development of the exhibition site into a “city of the future” are often promised by politicians – similar to the Olympics. But is this actually the case? Twenty years later, it is interesting to find out what has remained and been delivered from these often full-bodied promises — or not. Piet Niemann has planned to make a photographic observation of all EXPO sites, twenty years after the world expositions have taken place. Thus, the declared goal is a documentary work that grows steadily, enabling a reflective view of the past and ideally initiates reflections on responsible action in the future.

Following in the footsteps of the successful book Negative, this spectacular new book presents a more personal and more visceral collection of Stein's photographs of the era. The images presented here take readers from self-portraits in his run-down East-Village apartment to candid photographs of pop-cultural icons of the time and evocative shots of New York City streTrade Review"...[It] is a fascinating document, not only of the punk scene of the early and middle 1970s but more generally of New York City in its years of chaos, decay and creative energy." —Luc Sante, New York Times"Although most well-known for his iconic images of Debbie Harry, which were documented in his book Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk, Chris Stein’ was shooting plenty of other subjects in 1970s New York City. Getty Trust Publications Felice Beato – A Photographer on the Easter Road
Book SynopsisThis is a survey of one of the major but least recognised photographers of the 19thC. In recent years Felice Beato (1832-1909) has come to be recognised as one of the major photographers of the 19thC, yet there has been no general survey of his singular life and work. Born in Venice, Beato came of age in the Ottoman capital of Constantinople. As an apprentice in 1856, he photographed the sites of the Crimean War, thereby launching a long, remarkably adventurous career. Over the next half century he would follow in the wake of the British Empire: Egypt, Palestine, and Syria; India, where he photographed the aftermath of the Indian Mutiny; and China, where he chronicled the Second Opium War. He spent 30 years in Japan and Burma, where he was in the vanguard of Western photographers as they opened their borders to the West. This abundantly illustrated book captures Beato's entire oeuvre in both images and narrative and serves as a tribute to his extraordinary life.

MACK Shining Lights: Black Women Photographers in
Book SynopsisShining Lights is the first critical anthology of Black women photographers active in the UK during the 1980s and 1990s, providing a richly illustrated overview of a significant and overlooked chapter of British photographic history. Seen through the lens of Britain's sociopolitical and cultural contexts, the publication tells a unique story from the dual perspectives of lived experience and historical investigation. Edited and researched by Joy Gregory, one of the period's most influential photographic artists, alongside art historian Taous Dahmani, who contributes a keynote essay. The pioneering and diverse work created by Black women practitioners in the UK over the course of these two decades marked an important juncture in both documentary and conceptual practices, including the experimental use of photomontage, self-portraiture, staged imagery, and photography in dialogue with other media. Edition Skylight SHASTA African Queen
Book SynopsisShasta comes from Rwanda in Central Africa, a relatively small, landlocked country. She has strong family ties, and is proud of her origins. It was only by chance that I discovered her sedcard, and immediately found her fascinating. Photographing dark-skinned models in the Alps inevitably produces contrast-rich results, so we end up spending many hours in the mountains during a shoot. Surprisingly, Shasta has exceptionally good hiking equipment, and that motivates her to hike to the top of mountains whose peaks may still be hidden in the clouds. Unfortunately, the temperatures can be extremely fresh up high, but Shasta is brave and always ready to pose, even when the temperature is sometimes under 10 °C! In addition to modelling, Shasta designs and handmakes clothing in the fabrics, patterns and colours typical of her home country, ingeniously combining traditional African aesthetics with more modern, sensual styles. She doesnt need a model to show off her outfits as she does it all herself with selfies, of which she is the leading proponent! Of course, her experience behind the camera can be quite helpful when were posing in complicated, demanding settings. Stefan Soell

Book SynopsisWhen modern readers think of Hermann Goring, what probably comes to mind is the overweight drug addict and convicted war criminal who cheated the hangman's noose at Nuremberg by committing suicide just hours before he was due to be hanged. Or perhaps there is the image of his powerful German air force in the Second World War---the Luftwaffe---bombing defenceless European cities and towns in the early part of the war, until it was defeated by the British Royal Air Force in the epic Battle of Britain in 1940. Perhaps the reader might think of Goring the debauched art collector who pirated captured collections all over Nazi Europe during the Occupation years. All of these images are correct, but here we see another Hermann Goring: the slim, dashing fighter pilot and combat ace of an earlier struggle, the Great War, or World War I of 1914-18, which he began as an infantry officer fighting the French Army in the 1914 Battle of the Frontiers. During a hospitalization, his friend Bruno Lorzer convinced him to become an aerial observer-photographer, photographing the mighty French fortress of Verdun. He did, and began these never-before-seen personal photo albums of men and aircraft at war: up close.

The History Press Ltd R101 A Pictorial History
Book SynopsisAt the time of her construction in the late 1920s, His Majesty's Airship R101 was the largest flying object ever made as big and luxurious as an ocean liner, a Titanic of the skies designed to link the far-flung corners of the British Empire within days. As Britain recovered from the horrors of the trenches, R101's graceful lines, vast size and luxurious accommodation came to represent the supreme self-confidence and hopes of a nation. But that unclouded vision was fatally coloured by personal ambition, heroism, weakness and political intrigue that touched many lives and reached a terrible climax on a storm-lashed hillside in France in the early hours of 5 October 1930. This book is the first to tell her story through contemporary photographs, and actual material used during her construction. By returning to original sources, Nick Walmsley challenges the long-held view that R101 was a bad aircraft built by careless people. Atmospherically capturing the heady days of the 1920s, R101: A Pictorial History has wide appeal to aviation enthusiasts, social historians and anyone fascinated by a tale of an heroic dream with a horrific end.

MACK Puglia. Tra Albe e Tramonti
Book SynopsisPuglia. Tra albe e tramonti offers a brilliant account of Luigi Ghirri's relationship with Puglia - a distinctive region at the heel of Italy, which was pivotal in establishing Ghirri's career and continued to inspire him throughout it. A first visit in 1982 introduced Ghirri to Puglia's whitewashed streets, luminescent nights, doorways and arches, potted cacti, funfairs, and beaches, as well as a group of artists, critics, and curators who would become his close friends and collaborators. Over the following decade, Ghirri returned to the area almost every year, photographing, exhibiting, and deepening his understanding of its subtle terrain. These photographs, almost all of which are little-known and previously unpublished, capture the textures and rhythms of urban life, delighting in visual coincidence and tactile detail. Their sense of quiet discovery - and the colour film on which they are shot - allude warmly to the area's identity as a popular holiday destination. Ghirri maps the Apulian territory via the traces left by its inhabitants and visitors in images flooded with the distinctive light of Southern Italy - the bright sun and its eloquent shadows, and the otherworldly aura of neon and streetlights after dark. With texts by Adele Ghirri and Arturo Carlo Quintavalle.

Book SynopsisBorn in Munich, Sepp Werkmeister has over the course of the last decades made a name for himself as one of Germany’s leading jazz photographers. He created insightful black-and-white portraits of all of the greats, from Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald to Oscar Peterson and Miles Davis in Munich, New York and at international festivals. His New York cityscapes of the 1960s and 1970s, which provide fascinating insights into the everyday life of the American metropolis, have remained entirely unknown, however. Werkmeister captured the entire panorama of New York’s urban society using his Rolleiflex camera: the rubbish, the stranded and the homeless on the one hand, and the rich and fashionably dressed inhabitants on the other hand. This publication presents more than 120 pictures from the photographer’s archive.

Book SynopsisThe Namib Desert is vast, arid expanse of constantly moving gravel plains and dunes. It covers more than 31,000 square miles stretching the whole of the western coast of Namibia, into Angola and South Africa. The winds blow relentlessly and thick fog frequently blankets the towering dunes along the coast. Although it supports a wide diversity of flora and fauna, it is a harsh environment for man and mammal. In the midst of this seemingly inhospitable region, near Garub, live the elusive wild horses that have fascinated people for almost a century. And into this wilderness a young slip of a girl ventured, alone and armed with little more than a camera, a tent and a burning desire to follow the call of the wild. As the weeks turned into months, Miona Janeke followed the herd from before sunrise until after dark: learning, understanding, photographing and becoming one with the free-spirited horses. This book is the result of an intrepid pilgrimage to discover the essence of the mysterious herds of feral horses. The exquisite photographs of the horses and their surroundings show a deep, almost spiritual, connection between subject and photographer. They are testament to a rare talent and an indomitable personality.
