Random House Publishing Group Things Become Other Things
Book SynopsisA transformative 300-mile walk along Japan?s ancient pilgrimage routes and through depopulating villages inspires a heartrending remembrance of a long-lost friend, documented in poignant, imaginative prose and remarkable photography.Photographer and essayist Craig Mod is a veteran of long solo walks. But in 2021, during the pandemic shutdown of Japan?s borders, one particular walk around the Kumano Kodo routes?the ancient pilgrimage paths of Japan?s southern Kii Peninsula?took on an unexpectedly personal new significance. Mod found himself reflecting on his own childhood in a post-industrial American town, his experiences as an adoptee, his unlikely relocation to Japan at nineteen, and his relationship with one lost friend, whose life was tragically cut short after their paths diverged. For Mod, the walk became a tool to bear witness to a quiet grace visible only when ?you?re bored out of your skull and the miles left are long.?Tracing a 300-mile-long journey, Things Become Other Things folds together history, literature, poetry, Shinto and Buddhist spirituality, and contemporary rural life in Japan via dozens of conversations with aging fishermen, multi-generational inn owners, farmers, and kissaten cafe ?mamas.? Along the way, Mod communes with mountain fauna, marvels over evidence of bears and boars, and hopscotches around leeches. He encounters whispering priests and foul-mouthed little kids who ask him, ?Just what the heck are you, anyway?? Through sharp prose and his curious archive of photographs, he records evidence of floods and tsunamis, the disappearance of village life on the peninsula, and the capricious fecundity of nature.Things Become Other Things blends memoir and travel writing at their best, transporting readers to an otherwise inaccessible Japan, one made visible only through Mod?s unique bicultural lens.

River Books Siam & China Through the Lens of John Thomson
Book SynopsisThe photographs of these journeys form one of the most extensive records of any region taken in the 19th century. The range, depth and aesthetic quality of John Thomson’s photographic vision mark him out as one of the most important travel photographers. Thomson arrived in Siam in 1865 and with the help of the British Consul in Bangkok, he was able to gain an audience with King Mongkut who granted him permission to take some formal portraits of the King, his royal family and chief ministers, as well as recording important ceremonies and travelling to Ayutthaya, Petchaburi and the surrounding countryside. Staying in Bangkok for several months he photographed many aspects of the city, river scenes, its surrounding countryside and people, before journeying to Cambodia and the amazing Angkor Wat ruins. After an arduous and dangerous journey, Thomson became the first photographer to document Angkor Wat before returning to London. Between 1868-1872 Thomson turned his attention to China, making extensive trips to Guangdon, Fujian, Beijing and China’s north-east travelling down the Yangtze river and covering nearly 5,000 miles. In China, Thomson’s photographic skills reached their zenith and his portraits of women are particularly remarkable. Merrell Publishers Ltd Hunting with Eagles: In the Realm of the
Book SynopsisKazakh nomads have been grazing their livestock near the Altai Mountains in western Mongolia for many hundreds of years. Here, in this desolate landscape, where temperatures plummet to minus 40 degrees Celsius in winter, live the last of the men who use eagles to hunt on horseback. Rugged, formidable, proud, the golden eagles share the same qualities as the men with whom they ride. Only the toughest survive here. Fascinated by the special bond that develops between hunter and eagle, award-winning photographer Palani Mohan has spent the last few years documenting the burkitshi, as the hunters are known in Kazakh. As Mohan explains in his introduction to a collection of breathtaking duotone images, this is a culture under threat. There are no more than 50 to 60 'true' hunters left, and each winter claims a few more. Having taken a pup from the nest, given it pride of place in their home and trained it, all hunters describe the eagle as part of their family. With its massive wingspan, sharp eyesight and powerful, flesh-tearing beak and talons, the golden eagle is the perfect predator. Its usual prey, fox, provides a welcome meal for the hunter's family, while the pelt can be made into warm clothing. Mohan's photographs of the stark landscape, the isolation of the hunt, and most of all the trusting relationship between man and bird, convey the huge importance that the eagle plays in the lives of the last remaining Kazakh hunters. This is an enthralling, timely record of these noble men and their majestic eagles in an unforgiving part of the planet. AUTHOR: Indian born, Australian raised Palani Mohan is an award-winning photographer whose work has been featured in many international publications, including National Geographic, Stern, Geo, the New York Times, Timeand Newsweek. He has previously published four books, including 'Hidden Faces of India' (2002) and 'Vanishing Giants: Elephants of Asia' (2008). He currently lives in Hong Kong. SELLING POINTS: . Stunning duotone images document the unique relationship between the hunters and their eagles . A captivating, sensitive appreciation of a little-known and now threatened way of life . Getty Trust Publications Herb Ritts – L.A Style
Book SynopsisThis is a stunning collection of photographs - many never before published - celebrating the remarkable talent of Herb Ritts. "Herb Ritts" traces the life and career of the iconic photographer through a compelling selection of both renowned and previously unpublished, photographs and two insightful essays. Herb Ritts (1952-2002) was a Los Angeles-based photographer who established an international reputation for distinctive images of fashion models, nudes, and celebrity portraits. During the 1980s and 1990s, Ritts was sought out by leading fashion designers such as Armani, Gianfranco Ferre, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Valentino, and Versace, as well as magazine editors from "GQ", "Rolling Stone", and "Vanity Fair", among others, to lend glamour to their products and layouts. Largely self-taught, Ritts developed his own style, one that often made use of the California light and landscape and helped to separate his work from his New York-based peers. From the late 1970s until his untimely death from AIDS in 2002, Ritts' ability to create photographs that successfully bridged the gap between art and commerce was not only a testament to the power of his imagination and technical skill, but also marked the synergistic union between art, popular culture, and business that followed in the wake of the Pop Art movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

David Zwirner William Eggleston: The Outlands, Selected Works
Book SynopsisThe Outlands, a series of photographs taken by Eggleston between 1969 and 1974, establishes the groundbreaking visual themes and lexicon that the artist would continue to develop for decades to come. The work offers a journey through the mythic and evolving American South, seen through the artist’s lens: vibrant colors and a profound sense of nostalgia echo throughout Eggleston’s breathtaking oeuvre. His motifs of signage, cars, and roadside scenes create an iconography of American vistas that inspired a generation of photographers. With its in-depth selection of unforgettable images - a wood-paneled station wagon, doors flung open, parked in an expansive rural setting; the artist’s grandmother in the moody interior of their family’s Sumner, Mississippi home - The Outlands is emblematic of Eggleston’s dynamic, experimental practice. The breadth of work reenergizes his iconic landscapes and forms a new perspective of the American South in transition. Accompanying the ninety brilliant Kodachrome images and details, a literary, fictional text by the critically acclaimed author Rachel Kushner imagines a story of hitchhikers trekking through the Deep South. New scholarship by Robert Slifkin reframes the art-historical significance of Eggleston’s oeuvre, proposing affinities with work by Marcel Duchamp, Dan Graham, Jasper Johns, and Robert Smithson. A foreword by William Eggleston III offers important insights into the process of selecting and sequencing this series of images.

More than five years in the making, it is a work of extraordinary commitment and originality. With an emphasis on the mountain heights, Lee captures the otherworldliness and majesty of the 'English Alps' in all seasons and conditions. An experienced climber, Lee brings all his skill and tenacity to the task of capturing sunrise from the summits of the highest peaks in England, moonlight on icy slopes and seas of cloud filling the familiar valleys of Lakeland.Ascents of seemingly unscalable crags such as Pillar and Gimmer Crag are celebrated, and 360-degree panoramas in ethereal upland light from high peaks including Helvellyn, Bowfell and Great Gable are complemented by a series of identifying sketches. In a book which is full of revelations for Lakelanders and visitors alike, Alastair Lee renews and redefines the magic of this much-loved landscape.Trade Review'Lee's Cezanne-like obsession with capturing and recording a rocky feature in all lights, conditions and weathers makes his quest a fascinating one.' (The Independent on Sunday). 'They're not just pretty pictures but images that speak of a fundamental appreciation of the hills as a refuge from the world and a visionary vantage point, a unique wild character in the landscapes of our imagination.' (The Guardian). 'Jaw-droppingly stunning views of Lake District fell tops feature in this quite breathtaking book from award-winning photographer Alastair Lee. No one leafing through this collection of inspirational images can fail to be impressed by the mood and majesty of the mountains that Lee has managed to capture through his lens.' (Westmorland Gazette). 'Any photography fans with an affection for the area should get hold of a copy and stick it on their bookshelf for emergency inspiration.' (Cameron McNeish, TGO Magazine). 'This beautiful 'coffee-table' collection of photographs is probably the most stunning I have ever received for review. Few photographers have produced such evocative pictures. This stunning volume is a gift to be treasured and enjoyed for years.' (Keswick Reminder). 'Lake District Mountain Landscape is a gorgeous look at the less-travelled route, where peaks meet sky, the summits of the landscape whose lower reaches were made famous by Wordsworth. Lee's photographs are compelling, and stunningly rendered in a large format book that carries its panoramic power to the eye.' (Steven Ross Smith, Director of Literary Arts, The Banff Centre). 'Some of the photographs in this collection of landscapes of the high Lakeland hills are sumptuous beyond words, and offer quite staggering detail. I've seen little else that captures what it's like to be high on the fells with the same expansive pleasure.' (Ed Douglas, calmandfearless.com).

Getty Trust Publications Icons of Style - A Century of Fashion Photography
Book SynopsisIn 1911 the French couturier Paul Poiret challenged Edward Steichen to create the first artistic, rather than merely documentary, fashion photographs, a moment that is now considered to be a turning point in the history of fashion photography. As fashion changed over the next century, so did the photography of fashion. Steichen's modernist approach was forthright and visually arresting. In the 1930s the photographer Martin Munkacsi pioneered a gritty, photojournalistic style. In the 1960s Richard Avedon encouraged his models to express their personalities by smiling and laughing, which had often been discouraged previously. Helmut Newton brought an explosion of sexuality into fashion images and turned the tables on traditional gender stereotypes in the 1970s, and in the 1980s Bruce Weber and Herb Ritts made male sexuality an important part of fashion photography. Today, following the integration of digital technology, teams like Inez & Vinoodh and Mert & Marcus are reshaping our notion of what is acceptable-not just aesthetically but technically and conceptually-in a fashion photograph. From glossy pages in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar to framed prints on museum walls, fashion photography encompasses both commercial advertising and fine art. This survey of one hundred years of fashion photography updates and reevaluates this history in five chronological chapters by experts in photography and fashion history. It includes more than three hundred photographs by the genre's most famous practitioners as well as important but lesser-known figures, alongside a selection of costumes, fashion illustrations, magazine covers, and advertisements.Trade Review"Though the images are powerful in their own right, a hefty, 368-page exhibition catalog adds to the scholarship with thoroughly documented and illustrated chapters on the medium's evolution." --Los Angeles Times "A historical roadmap through the world of fashion photography. . .The artfully curated book. . . is more than a beautiful ornament meant to collect dust atop your coffee table."--The Daily Beast "An enlightening survey of one hundred years of fashion photography."--Photo District News ." . . this impressive tome is an elegant exploration of where fashion, advertising, history and art come together. A must-have for any fashion or fashion photography aficionado." --Photographer's Forum "This stupendous compendium makes an alluring case for fashion photography as art . . . ." --Financial Times "This coffee table companion to the upcoming exhibition is a comprehensive survey of developments in 20th-century photographic style and taste through that lens, and it's gorgeous." --The Globe and Mail

Amber Books Ltd Bridges
Book SynopsisFrom abandoned structures that have long ceased to take you anywhere to today’s feats of engineering, Bridges is a pictorial celebration of 150 suspension bridges, iron bridges, stone bridges, aqueducts, viaducts, railway bridges, footbridges and rope bridges. Organised in sections such as abandoned bridges, classic bridges and superstructures, the book contains an immense range of wooden, stone, iron, steel and concrete bridges. There are tiny village bridges and vast bridges, narrow bridges and motorway-wide bridges, bridges that act as dams and bridges that support buildings, covered bridges, famous bridges and little-known gems. From San Francisco’s Golden Gate bridge to the 21st century Millau Viaduct in France – the tallest bridge in the world, from the Roman aqueduct in Segovia, Spain, to farmers still building bamboo bridges, the book draws examples from all over the world. Ranging from the Rocky Mountains to Siberia and Iran, a picture emerges of not only how new technologies have made it possible for bridges to be built, but also how bridges have themselves been catalysts for social change. And when they have been abandoned, such as in former gold rush towns, these bridges tell their own stories of how the world moves on. Presented in a landscape format and with 150 outstanding colour photographs, Bridges is a stunning collection of images.Table of ContentsContents to include Ancient and Medieval bridges, 62 BCE–1499 Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), Lucerne, Switzerland Ponte Fabricio, Rome, Italy Puente Trajan (Trajan's Bridge) Alcántara, Estremadura, Spain Ponte di Tiberio (Tiberius Bridge), Rimini, Italy Acueducto de los Milagros (Aqueduct of the Miracles), Mérida, Spain Pont du Gard, Nîmes, France Puente Romano (Roman Bridge), Córdoba, Spain Segovia Aqueduct, Spain Segura Aqueduct, Castelo Branco, Portugal Adana Roman Bridge, Turkey Ponte Sant' Angelo, Rome, Italy Aqueduct of Valens, Istanbul, Turkey Malabadi Bridge, Diyarbakir Province, Turkey Anji (Zhaozhu) Bridge, Hebei Province, China Dicle Bridge, Diyarbakir, Turkey Puente la Reina (Queen's Bridge), Navarre, Spain Pont Vieux (Old Bridge), Albi, France Puente Viejo (Old Bridge), Besalú, Catalonia, Spain High Bridge, Lincoln, England Lugou or Marco Polo Bridge, Beijing, China Vieux Pont (Old Bridge), Béziers, France Hasankeyf Bridge, Anatolia, Turkey Salahin Bridge, Alaverdi, Armenia Citadel Bridge, Aleppo, Syria Ponts Couverts, Strasbourg, France Monnow Bridge, Monmouth, Wales Starý Most (Old Bridge), Písek, South Bohemia, Czech Republic Ponte Castelvecchio, Verona, Italy Kraemerbrücke (Merchant's Bridge), Erfurt, Germany Pont Valentré, Cahors, France Puente de San Martin, Toledo, Spain Puente de Frías, Burgos Province, Spain Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge), Florence, Italy Ponte Visconti, Valeggio sul Mincio, Italy Kasteel Doorwerth, Gelderland, Netherlands Obere Brücke (Upper Bridge), Bamberg, Germany Karlův Most (Charles Bridge), Prague, Czech Republic The Early Modern Period, 1500-1700 Brig o' Doon, Alloway, Scotland Slaters' Bridge, Cumbria, England Old Bridge, Stirling, Scotland Dyavolski Most (Devil's Bridge), Ardino, Bulgaria Bar Aqueduct, Stari Bar, Montenegro Stari Most ('Old Bridge'), Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina Essex Bridge, Shugborough, England Padre Tembleque Aqueduct, Tepeyahualco, Mexico Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge, Visegrad, Bosnia-Herzegovina Ponte dei Tre Archi, Venice, Italy Puente de Segovia, Madrid, Spain Seher-Cehajina Ćuprija (Governor's Bridge), Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina Japanese Covered Bridge, Hoi An, Vietnam Ponte di Rialto, Venice, Italy Stara Ćuprija (Old Bridge), Konjic, Bosnia-Herzegovina Malmsmead Bridge, Oare, Somerset, England Yulong Bridge, Yangshuo, China Shaharah Bridge, Yemen Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs), Venice, Italy Si-o-se Pol (33-Arch Bridge), Isfahan, Iran Pont Neuf, Paris, France Puente de Piedra (Stone Bridge), Zamora, Spain Arta Bridge, Arachthos River, Greece Somerset Lifting Bridge, Bermuda Gongchen Bridge, Hangzhou, China Korenbeursbrug (Cornmarket Bridge), Leiden, Netherlands Pol e-Khaju (Khaju Bridge), Isfahan, Iran Watendlath Bridge, Cumbria, England Kintai Bridge, Iwakuni, Japan Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Bridges Puente Nuevo (New Bridge), Ronda, Spain Holzbrücke (Wooden Bridge), Bad Säckingen, Germany Luding Chain Bridge, China The 'Seventeen Hole' Bridge, Beijing, China Arcos da Lapa, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Puente de Toledo, Madrid, Spain Lejonströmsbron (Lejonström Bridge), Skellefteå, Sweden Venedictos Bridge, Grevena Prefecture, Greece Jade Belt Bridge, Beijing, China Pulteney Bridge, Bath, England Figured Bridge, Tsaritsyno Park, Moscow, Russia Siberian Marble Gallery, Tsarskoe Selo, Russia The Iron Bridge, Ironbridge, England Lomonosov Bridge, St Petersburg, Russia Alte Brücke (Old Bridge), Heidelberg, Germany Pont de la Concorde, Paris, France Halfpenny Bridge, Lechlade, England Puente Nuevo (New Bridge), Ronda, Spain Norrbro (North Bridge), Stockholm, Sweden Old Bridge, Bewdley, England Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Llangollen, Wales Ha'penny Bridge, Dublin, Ireland Sligachan Old Bridge, Isle of Skye, Scotland Conwy Suspension Bridge, Conwy, Wales Pont de Pierre (Stone Bridge), Bordeaux, France Kilenclyukú Híd (Nine-Hole Bridge), Hortobágy National Park, Hungary Széchenyi Bridge, Budapest, Hungary Royal Border Bridge, Berwick, England U Bein Bridge, Amarapura, Myanmar Bridge of Sighs, Cambridge, England 'Bridge of Lies', Sibiu, Romania Rakotzbrücke, Park Kromlau, Germany Huc Bridge, Hanoi, Vietnam Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol, England Konitsa Bridge, Greece Kuldiga Bridge, Latvia Margit Híd (Margaret Bridge), Budapest, Hungary Brooklyn Bridge, New York, USA Capilano Suspension Bridge, Vancouver, Canada Flume Covered Bridge, New Hampshire, USA Forth Railway Bridge, Scotland Lispole Viaduct, Kerry, Ireland Tower Bridge, London, England Twentieth Century Bridges Tower Bridge, Sacramento, USA Mexican Canyon Trestle, New Mexico, USA Victoria Falls Bridge, Zimbabwe/Zambia Solkan Bridge, Slovenia, Europe Glienicke Bridge, Germany Yutengping Bridge, Taiwan Zverynas Bridge. Aperture Tim Davis: I'm Looking Through You
Book SynopsisI’m Looking Through You is an expansive, visual poem celebrating the glamorous surface of Los Angeles and its reach. Animating Davis's wry observations and mesmerizing, color-pop geometry of the images is his decades-long gimlet-eyed meditation on making pictures. As photographer and writer Tim Davis states, “The camera is a machine that sees only surfaces. The world casts its spell, and the camera gobbles up its glamour, uncritically, with pure certainty, assuming there is nothing underneath.” Davis’s keenly observational images, interspersed with a selection of his writings on the medium—the joys and pitfalls of camera seeing—solidify I’m Looking Through You as an unabashed celebration of photography.Trade Review“Davis’s book is a timely reminder of the breathtaking pleasure one can experience in approaching the world with sincere curiosity, eyes wide open, a camera in hand.” —British Journal of Photography “A kaleidoscopic visual record of everyday street encounters tinged with a sense of otherworldly strangeness.” —Financial Times
