Centre for the Study of Language & Information Cilungu Phonology
Book SynopsisCilungu is an underrepresented language spoken in northern Zambia and Tanzania whose future is far from certain, given ongoing urbanization and the ascendancy of other regional languages. The product of over fifteen years of fieldwork, "Cilungu Phonology" presents a comprehensive description and analysis of this endangered language. Featuring a reference grammar and formal analysis of Cilungu, this volume will be a major contribution to our understanding of tonology, since several of the forty-four processes analyzed appear to be unique to the language. It also includes a discussion of morphology, both nominal and verbal.

Equinox Publishing Ltd Phonetics for Speech Pathology
Book SynopsisThe new, third, edition of this indispensable guide for speech pathology and therapy students is completely updated, applying the results of the most recent research into speech disorders. Phonetics for Speech Pathology introduces normative aspects of phonetics and describes how these may go wrong in atypical speech, and the consequences when they do. The book deals with the three main areas of phonetics: articulatory, acoustic, and auditory, this last being often neglected in phonetics textbooks. The chapters are copiously illustrated, with most diagrams and figures newly drawn for this edition. Correct use of phonetic symbolizations and the importance of adequate transcription in the clinic are stressed, as is the use of instrumental analyses to augment impressionistic descriptions of speech. A range of modern instrumental techniques in speech analysis is covered, as are developments in hearing research including auditory processing disorder. The book concludes with an introduction to current models of speech production and perception.Table of ContentsPreface Introduction Part 1 Articulatory Phonetics Chapter 1 The Vocal Organs Chapter 2 Initiation Chapter 3 Phonation Chapter 4 Manner of Articulation Chapter 5 Place of Articulation Chapter 6 Orality and Nasality Chapter 7 Plosives Chapter 8 Vowels Chapter 9 Primary, secondary, and double articulations Chapter 10 Phonetic Transcription Chapter 11 Parametric Phonetics Chapter 12 Suprasegmentals: Length, stress and pitch Chapter 13 Suprasegmentals: Voice Quality Chapter 14 Speech Imaging Part 2 Acoustic Phonetics Chapter 15 Frequency and Pitch Chapter 16 Intensity and Loudness Chapter 17 Resonance Chapter 18 Recording Speech Chapter 19 Acoustic Analysis: Spectrography Chapter 20 Acoustic Characteristics of Vowels Chapter 21 Acoustic Characteristics of Sonorants Chapter 22 Acoustic Characteristics of Obstruents Chapter 23 Acoustic Characteristics of Suprasegmentals: Stress Chapter 24 Acoustic Characteristics of Suprasegmentals: Pitch Chapter 25 Acoustic Characteristics of Suprasegmentals: Connected speech Chapter 26 Acoustic Characteristics of Suprasegmentals: Voice Quality Chapter 27 Acoustic Characteristics of Child Speech Disorders Chapter 28 Acoustic Characteristics of Acquired Speech Disorders Part 3 Auditory Phonetics Chapter 29 Hearing: The Ear Chapter 30 Hearing: Perception Chapter 31 Hearing: Comprehension Chapter 32 Perceptual Units of Speech Chapter 33 Hearing Impairment Chapter 34 Phonetics of Hearing Impaired Speech Chapter 35 Audiological Measurement Chapter 36 Auditory Processing Disorder Chapter 37 Feedback in Speech Chapter 38 Psychoacoustic Experiments Chapter 39 Delayed Auditory Feedback Chapter 40 Dichotic Listening Chapter 41 Time-Variated Speech Chapter 42 Models of Speech Production and Perception Appendices: Phonetic Symbols and Notes on Transcription Appendix I The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) Appendix II The Extensions to the IPA for Disordered Speech (extIPA) Appendix III VoQS symbols for Voice Quality

Equinox Publishing Ltd Prosodic Variation (With)in Languages:
Book SynopsisThis volume focuses on research on prosodic variation, comprising intonation, prosodic phrasing, and segmental phenomena that are prosodically motivated or constrained, in several languages and language varieties. Besides Portuguese (European, Brazilian, and African varieties), the book covers another three unrelated languages and their varieties: Romanian, Arabic, and Assamese (spoken in India and Bangladesh). Language coverage is thus diverse, including understudied languages/varieties. The approaches followed are both experimental and theoretical. All the chapters share a common goal: to add to the knowledge of prosodic variation in each of the languages and varieties studied, and to contribute to the understanding of prosodic grammar, in general.Table of ContentsIntroduction Marisa Cruz and Sónia Frota Part I: Intonation 1. Equinox Publishing Ltd Syntax-Prosody in Optimality Theory: Theory and
Book SynopsisOptimality Theory has become the dominant approach to studying phonology, including analyses of the mapping from syntactic structure to prosodic structure. However, when syntactic and prosodic structures are represented as trees, it is difficult, if not impossible, to systematically generate by hand all the possible prosodic parses that must be considered in an Optimality Theory investigation for any given syntactic input. Consequently, most existing syntax-prosody analyses are in this way incomplete, compromising their validity. This volume presents a series of complete analyses of the syntax-prosody interface, thanks to their use of the Syntax-Prosody in Optimality Theory (SPOT) application. This JavaScript application, developed by the editors of this volume, automates candidate generation and constraint evaluation, making a rigorous Optimality Theory analysis of syntax-prosody possible. SPOT allows the user to test the typological predictions of the numerous proposed constraints on prosodic markedness and syntax-prosody mapping, so that researchers can make progress toward determining which formulations of the constraints should actually be part of the universal constraint set. A theme of the volume is comparing Selkirk’s Match Theory with the older Align Theory of syntax-prosody mapping, finding that both are needed, at least in some languages.Table of Contents1. University of Toronto Press Optimality Theory Phonological Acquisition and Disorders
Book SynopsisFocusing on the phonologies of children with functional (non-organic) speech disorders, this volume reports the latest findings in optimality theory, phonological acquisition and disorders. The book is based on typological, cross-sectional, longitudinal, and experimental evidence from over 200 children. It stands out because of the unique test case that the population offers to optimality theory, particularly with respect to puzzles of opacity, lawful orders of acquisition, and language learnability. Beyond its theoretical significance, this research holds clinical relevance for the assessment and treatment of disordered populations, most notably the systematic prediction of learning outcomes. The volume bridges the gap between theory and application by showing how each informs the other. It is intended for linguists, psychologists, speech pathologists, second-language instructors and those interested in the latest developments in phonological theory and its applied extensions.

University of Toronto Press Intonation in the Grammar of English
Book SynopsisIntonation in the Grammar of English is written for scholars who are interested in language, but not necessarily linguists or phoneticians. The introduction covers speech sound, locating it in relation to other phenomena and disciplines, discusses its representation and interpretation, and introduces the systems and strata which frame its analysis in terms of systemic functional linguistics. The three kinds of meaning - textual meaning (relating language to its ever changing context), interpersonal meaning (allowing us to enact our social exchanges with others) and ideational meaning (construing the logic through which we represent the world we live in) - are each achieved in part through intonation. We make these meanings through choices: in terms of locating the main rise or fall in an intonation contour; in terms of fitting an intonation contour to part of a clause, to a whole clause, or to more than a clause; and in terms of the shape of the intonation contour. Sound and video files are available providing examples of the systems of intonational choices presented in the book, and also giving examples of these systems being drawn on in different dialects of English, and in the many different exchange situations in which speakers find themselves in the course of a day (contact publisher for details).
