Book SynopsisIn the 21st century we need a new philosophy as opposed to the old philosophy: a philosophy of man or philosophical anthropology. The importance of a new philosophy of man is that it addresses people all over the world, thus helping us to overcome our differences. And if we look a bit further into the world of the 21st century, we see that the most pressing project will be the search for meaning in the lives of human beings in a globalised world. Following the complete existential deconstruction that took place in the 20th century, our confusion on the foundations of our life abounds. The next step, consolidation in the 21st century, has been achieved in my philosophical anthropology. The theoretical basis for the new philosophy was laid by American philosopher and member of the American Philosophical Association James Joseph Dagenais (1923-1981), who came to the conclusion that philosophical anthropology is not a science, but a domain unto itself and cannot be replaced by any other anthropology. The final explanation of man lies outside all possible scientific views that have ever been formulated, because they lie within the origins of every branch of science, including the science of philosophy. It is the final ground on which the philosophies, of any nature whatsoever, can be practised implicitly or explicitly.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn 1580, Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) published a book unique by its title and its content: EssaysR. A literary genre was born. At first sight, the Essays resemble a patchwork of personal reflections, but they engage with questions that animate the human mind, and tend toward a single goal: to live better in the present and to prepare for death. For this reason, Montaigne''s thought and writings have been a subject of enduring interest across disciplines. This Handbook brings together essays by prominent scholars that examine Montaigne''s literary, philosophical, and political contributions, and assess his legacy and relevance today in a global perspective. The chapters of this Handbook offer a sweeping study of Montaigne across different disciplines and in a global perspective. One section covers the historical Montaigne, situating his thought in his own time and space, notably the Wars of Religion in France. The political, historical and religious context of Montaigne''s Essays reTrade ReviewIn conclusion, it is in the domain of pedagogy that The Oxford Handbook of Montaigne has the potential to shine the brightest. It can provide instructors not only with a sense of what is at stake in Montaigne, but with an idea of what essays to assign or excerpt, as well as readymade secondary readings and useful, albeit somewhat scant, suggestions for further reading. Hopefully, Desan and his fellow contributors have started a trend that will someday see Oxford Handbooks for other luminaries of early modern France. * Scott M. Book SynopsisDoes philosophy gain or lose when it is embedded within literature or embodied by drama? Does literary criticism gain or lose when it turns to literary works as occasions for abstract reflection? Leading literary scholars and philosophers interrogate philosophical dimensions of Shakespeare''s Hamlet with these urgent questions in view.Scholars probe Hamlet''s own insights, assess the significance of philosophy''s literary-dramatic framing by this play, and trace the philosophically-relevant underpinnings revealed by historical transformations in Hamlet''s reception. They focus on the play''s thematizations of subjectivity, knowledge, sex, grief, self-theatricalization.Examining Shakespeare''s play from a philosophical standpoint sharpens the questions the play itself so famously poses: What counts as a proper response to injustice upon realizing that whatever one does, there can be no undoing of the initial wrong?
