  • From Fire To Light

HarperCollins India From Fire To Light

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisIn From Fire to Light, acclaimed academic Arvind Sharma argues that the present understanding of the Manusmriti - regarded as a text designed by the higher castes, especially brahmanas, to oppress the lower castes and women - only tells one side of the story. As he demonstrates, this perception, when examined against textual, commentarial and historical evidence, is limited to the point of being misleading (and sometimes downright wrong).Providing an alternative reading of the Manusmriti, From Fire to Light accepts some of the conclusions associated with the existing interpretation but presents them in a new light, mitigating and at times contradicting some of its other features. In taking the plural character of the Hindu tradition and the Manusmriti''s historical context more deeply into account, it brings about a paradigm shift in our understanding of this ancient text. The Manusmriti emerges as an attempt at social engineering, but of a rather different kind than imagined till now.

Book SynopsisThe first English translation of the book that established Paolo Virno as one of the most influential Italian thinkers of his generation. With the 1986 publication of this book in Italy, Paolo Virno established himself as one of the most influential Italian thinkers of his generation. Astonishingly, this crucial work has never before been published in an English translation. This MIT Press edition, translated by Italian philosopher and Insubordinations series editor Lorenzo Chiesa, is its first English-language version. Virno here engages, in an innovative and iconoclastic way, with some classical issues of philosophy involving experience, singularity, and the relation between ethics and language, while also offering a profoundly transformative political perspective that revolves around the Marxian notion of the general intellect. Virno reconsiders Walter Benjamin's idea of a loss of the aura (brought on, Benjamin argued, by technical reproducibility), and postula

Book SynopsisWhat does it imply for Nigerian philosophers to conscientiously and engagingly reflect on Nigeria as a place of philosophy and as a dynamic plural context of socioeconomic, political, cultural and ethnic problems? Any answer to this question automatically constitutes the opening salvo to the reflection on the evolution of a Nigerian tradition of philosophy and philosophizing. This book represents such an initial salvo in in its attempt to hammer out the conditions for the possibility of a Nigerian tradition of philosophy by placing that endeavor in between the triadic challenges of the Nigerian political economy, the African philosophical theorizing and the global epistemological hegemony. How do these three dynamics condition the evolution and functional relevance of the philosophical enterprise in Nigeria? How have Nigerian philosophers responded to them? What is Nigerian philosophy? How can there be a Nigerian philosophy when there are no Nigerians? This book is also an attempt to contribute to the trajectory of philosophy education in Nigeria within the context of a postcolonial educational system and university dynamics that stultifies the role of the intellectuals in development. From Plato to Wiredu, from Bodunrin to Bourdieu, and from Heidegger and Nietzsche to Fanon, Mignolo and Santos, the book traces a trajectory of dynamics rethinking of existing paradigms and epistemological assumptions that could enable a robust evolution of a Nigerian tradition of philosophy that possesses sufficient clout to confront its historicity and its place in Nigeriaâs development impasse. • Psychoanalysis in a New Light

Cambridge University Press Psychoanalysis in a New Light

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat kind of a science is psychoanalysis? What constitutes its domain? What truth claims does it maintain? In this unique and scholarly work concerning the nature of psychoanalysis, Gunnar Karlsson guides his arguments through phenomenological thinking which, he claims, can be seen as an alternative to the recent attempts to cite neuropsychoanalysis as the answer to the crisis of psychoanalysis. Karlsson criticizes this effort to ground psychoanalysis in biology and neurology and emphasizes instead the importance of defining the psychoanalytic domain from the vantage point of the character of consciousness. His understanding of the unconscious, the libido and the death drive offer new insights into the nature of psychoanalysis, and he also illuminates and develops neglected dimensions such as consciousness and self-consciousness. Karlsson's approach to psychoanalysis is rigorous yet original, and this book fills an intellectual gap with implications for both the theoretical understandiTrade Review'An invaluable study of Husserl's phenomenology and Freud's psychoanalysis in relation to modern neuroscience. Karlsson's engaging writing and crystal-clear style make this an extremely worthwhile book.' Juliet Flower MacCannell, University of California, Irvine'I do not know of any other books that approach the problem of the unconscious from a phenomenological epistemological perspective. This book fills an intellectual gap, is highly original and very persuasive.' Jo Nash, University of Sheffield'What [Karlsson] does across eight short chapters is to define and trace phenomenological philosophy's approach to understanding the human and then apply that understanding to psychoanalysis, using both Freud's writings and other analysts' interpretations of Freud's work. In the end, [he] both clarifies and complicates psychoanalysis, offering up an interpretation that somehow manages to be true to Freud's ideas while also offering a new view on an old subject.' PsycCRITIQUES'Karlsson's book redefines the significance and purpose of psychoanalysis from a phenomenological perspective that conceives of psychoanalysis as a science (searching for truth) and 'not merely as a method of treatment' … This project is clearly executed with helpful chapter summaries along the way. Overall, it casts a powerful phenomenological searchlight upon the couch, levering the intelligibility of psychoanalytic theory off from dependence on its own empirical moment …' Sara Beardsworth, Notre Dame Philosophical ReviewsTable of ContentsPreface; 1. Phenomenology and psychoanalysis; 2. The life-world as the ground for sciences; 3. A critical examination of neuropsychoanalysis; 4. The conceptualization of the psychical in psychoanalysis; 5. The libido as the core of the unconscious; 6. The grounding of libido in the life-world experience; 7. Beyond the pleasure principle: the affirmation of existence; 8. Book SynopsisThe students of today tell their stories of adversity and growth in letters to the original Freedom Writers—authors of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Freedom Writers Diary—who write supportive and powerful letters in response.Over twenty years ago, the students in first-year teacher Erin Gruwell’s high school class in Long Beach, California, were labeled “unteachable”—but she saw past that. Instead of treating them as scores on a test, she understood that each of them had a unique story to tell. Inspired by books like Anne Frank’s diary, her students began writing their own diaries, eventually dubbing themselves the Freedom Writers. Together, they co-authored The Freedom Writers Diary, which launched a movement that remains incredibly relevant and impactful today. Their stories speak to young people who feel as if those around them do not care about their lives, their feelings, and their struggles.

  • Longchenpas Three Cycles of Natural Freedom

Shogam Publications Longchenpas Three Cycles of Natural Freedom

Book SynopsisLongchenpa''s Three Cycles of Natural Freedom: Oral translation and commentary is a seminal Dzogchen text that is divided into three cycles: Mind, Ultimate Reality and Equality. The ninth Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche (1959-2012) of the Kagyu Nyingma tradition, one of the great meditation master and scholars to come out of the Tibetan diaspora, has provided a detailed oral commentary and spontaneous translation of Longchenpa''s text to help reveal the essential meaning of these profound teachings. A glimpse at each cycle - in the Mind Cycle, Longchenpa is in part concerned with our ability to comprehend and experience the freedom within the authentic state; in the Ultimate Reality Cycle, all dualistic notions are challenged as the nature of self and phenomena are revealed as the same; in the Equality Cycle, our aboriginal state is described as that which transcends conditioned existence. Within each cycle, Lonchenpa also gives concise guidelines on approaching one''s practice within a retreat situation. Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche''s renowned fluency with the English language, coupled with his own profound levels of realization, makes this translation an exciting opportunity for these transformative teachings to not only be known, but also experienced in these modern times.

Book SynopsisOn Ceasing to be Human explores and develops a question posed by Stanley Cavell, "Can a human being be free of human nature?" particularly in terms of the link between freedom and nonidentity.Trade Review"On Ceasing to be Human is a must read in terms of recent discussions relating to the man/animal distinction. It does a brilliant job of bringing together strands of intellectual history—Deleuze, Nancy, Derrida, Agamben, Bataille, Blanchot, and Levinas—whose interconnections enable us to read French theory in an entirely new way even as they inform questions about the end of the human." -- Herman Rapaport"On Ceasing to be Human lays out with exemplary clarity the stakes of recent debates over the human. Bruns provides a commentary on the major positions presently in play, placing them in dialogue with one another and sketching out alternatives, fault lines, and disagreements. In his account, the human, as a concept or category, is inseparable from a conservative program to shore up currently dominant practices and institutions. He asks whether, in conceiving non-human others principally on the basis of their lack of human capacities, we remain fully human ourselves." -- R.M. Berry"Bruns has written yet another interesting book on his lifelong passions: the relation of literature and philosophy to their language; and the theme of poetry and ethics belonging to the domain of openness, responsibility, the singular, and the irreducible—versus traditional respect for rules . . . Overall, this short book is a wonderful aid in understanding current French thought on the title's topic . . . Recommended." -- S. Correa * CHOICE *

Fordham University Press Thinking about Thinking

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThinking about Thinking examines philosophy from a variety of perspectives as a the practice realized by persons who communicate with one another while reflecting about the meaning of human life and thought.Trade ReviewRather than elaborate types, values, classics, or even a phenomenology of conversation, Peperzak draws the reader into an engaging dialogue to rediscover how thought and life can enrich each other. By reconfiguring an array of premodern, modern, and postmodern stances, he presents a mature evaluation of Levinas, human affectivity as an original dative of manifestation that cannot be mastered or exhausted by any conversation, and abundant untimely but eminently applicable wisdom on philosophy’s mediating role in the university and in our culture. In the process we awake from dogmatic and anti-dogmatic slumbers to engage with equal fervor thought and one another. Both his wide circle of grateful readers and newcomers to Peperzak’s oeuvre have much to learn from this stimulating collection.---—Peter Casarella, DePaul University"Thinking about Thinking comprises a set of meditations about the dialogical nature of philosophy and the philosophical life. The fruit of twenty-five years of teaching by a gifted and spirit-filled philosopher, these ten meditations gather around the themes of trust and faith in its several forms, including religious faith and Hegel’s “faith in reason.” As dialogical, philosophizing entails the receiver who is also a responder. Its focus is on the dative case, each participant bringing along the “tradition” that has helped fashion the person he or she is. In effect, it requires the risk that the honest conversation entered into by trusting interlocutors will leave neither party unchanged by the experience. Reading this thoughtful account is itself transformative. It is reminiscent of Foucault’s famous “parrhesiastic contract.”---—Thomas R. Flynn, Emory University

Book SynopsisThis publication is a parallel edition of the English and Latin versions of a book designed by Hutcheson for use in the classroom. General Editor Knud Haakonssen remarks that Hutcheson''s Institutio was written as a textbook for university students and it therefore covers a curriculum which has an institutional background in his own university, Glasgow. This was a curriculum crucially influenced by Hutcheson''s predecessor Gershom Carmichael, and at its center was modern natural jurisprudence as systematised by Grotius, Pufendorf, and others . . . The Institutio is the first major [published] attempt by Hutcheson to deal with natural law on his own terms . . . It therefore encapsulates the axis of natural law and Scottish Enlightenment ideas, which so many other thinkers, including Adam Smith, worked with in their different ways. It is of great significance that this work issued from the class in which Smith sat as a student.

Book SynopsisThe essays selected here for translation derive largely from Thomasius''s work on Staatskirchenrecht, or the political jurisprudence of church law. These works, originating as disputations, theses, and pamphlets, were direct interventions in the unresolved issue of the political role of religion in Brandenburg-Prussia, a state in which a Calvinist dynasty ruled over a largely Lutheran population and nobility as well as a significant Catholic minority. In mandating limited religious toleration within the German states, the provisions of the Peace of Westphalia (1648) also provided the rulers of Brandenburg-Prussia with a way of keeping the powerful Lutheran church in check by guaranteeing a degree of religious freedom to non-Lutherans and thereby detaching the state from the most powerful territorial church. Thomasius''s writings on church-state relations, many of them critical of the civil claims made by Lutheran theologians, are a direct response to this state of affairs. At the same

Book SynopsisIn 1759, at the height of the Seven Year''s War, when Great Britain was suffering a series of military reversals, Montagu considered his country''s plight in an historical contect formed by the study of five ancient republics: Sparta, Athens, Thenes, Carthage and Rome. Montagu''s focus on the ancient republics gives his contribution a distinctive twist to the chorus of voices lamenting Britain''s decline, and his analysis exerted influence in three momentous eighteenth-century crises: the Seven Year''s War, the American War of Independence, and the French Revolution. This is the first modern edition of Montagu''s work.
