  • Cambridge University Press Kants Lectures on Political Philosophy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA decade prior to his main publications in political philosophy, Kant presented his views on the topic in his 1784 course lectures on natural right. This Critical Guide examines this only surviving student transcript of these lectures, which shows how Kant''s political philosophy developed in response to the dominant natural law tradition and other theories. Fourteen new essays explore how Kant''s lectures reveal his assessment of natural law, the central value of freedom, the importance of property and contract, the purposes and powers of the state, and the role of individual autonomy and the rights of human beings. The essays place his claims in relation to events and other publications of the early 1780s, and show Kant in the process of working out the theories which would later characterize his influential political philosophy.

  • Cambridge University Press Kant on the History and Development of Practical

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis Element''s focus is Kant''s history of human reason: his teleological vision of the past development of our rational capacities from their very emergence until Kant''s own ''age of Enlightenment.'' One of the goals is to connect Kant''s speculative account of the very beginning of rationality ? a topic that has thus far been largely neglected in Kantian scholarship ? to his well-known theory of humankind''s progress. The Element elucidates Kant''s hopes with regard to reason''s future progress and his guidelines for how to achieve this progress by unifying them with his vision of reason''s past. Another goal is to bring more attention to Kant''s essay ''Conjectural Beginning of Human History,'' where this account is presented, and to show that this unusual text does not stand in conflict with Kant''s philosophy and is not merely tangentially related to it, but illuminates and complements certain aspects of his critical philosophy.

  • Cambridge University Press Philosophy of Physiology

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTime is ripe to complement the question ''what is health and disease?'' in philosophy of medicine with a ''philosophy of physiology.'' Indeed, the actors in this debate share the conviction that a ''foundational'' concept dictates to this scientific field what is to be considered healthy or pathological and leaves it to explore only facts and mechanisms. Rejecting this presupposition, philosophy of physiology accepts that biomedical sciences explore and redefine their own object: the healthy, the pathological. Indeed, various theories of disease and health, that philosophers have rarely studied, form the core of biomedical research, too hastily considered as a science ''without theories.'' The Element identifies them, and clarifies their content, presuppositions, and scope. Finally, it proposes a new question about the unity of the pathological phenomenon: not ''what do all diseases have in common?'' but rather, ''why is the susceptibility to disease a universal and necessary characteristic of living beings?''

  • Cambridge University Press Kant on Rational Sympathy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis Element explains Kant's distinction between rational sympathy and natural sympathy. In rational sympathy, we freely use the imagination to step into others' first-person perspectives and associate imagined intuitional contents with the concepts others use to communicate their feelings. This prompts feelings in us that are like their feelings.
