Philosophy Books
Cambridge University Press Making Sense of Heritability Cambridge Studies in Philosophy and Biology
Book SynopsisIn this book, Neven Sesardic defends the view that it is both possible and useful to measure the separate contributions of heredity and environment to the explanation of human psychological differences. He critically examines the view - very widely accepted by scientists, social scientists and philosophers of science - that heritability estimates have no causal implications and are devoid of any interest. In a series of clearly written chapters he introduces the reader to the problems and subjects the arguments to close philosophical scrutiny. His conclusion is that anti-heritability arguments are based on conceptual confusions and misunderstandings of behavioural genetics. His book is a fresh and compelling intervention in a very contentious debate.Trade Review"This si an intelligent book that addresses one of the most controversial and emotional debates that has occurred in psychology over the last half of the 20th century." - David A. Mrazek, PsycCritiquesTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1. The nature-nurture debate: a premature burial?; 2. A tangle of interactions: separating genetic and environmental influences; 3. Lost in correlations? Direct and indirect genetic causes; 4. From individuals to groups: genetics and race; 5. Genes and malleability; 6. Science and sensitivity; 7. Conclusions.

Cambridge University Press The Principle of Sufficient Reason A Reassessment Cambridge Studies in Philosophy
Book SynopsisThe Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR) says that all contingent facts must have explanation. In this 2006 volume, which was the first on the topic in the English language in nearly half a century, Alexander Pruss examines the substantive philosophical issues raised by the Principle Reason. Discussing various forms of the PSR and selected historical episodes, from Parmenides, Leibnez, and Hume, Pruss defends the claim that every true contingent proposition must have an explanation against major objections, including Hume's imaginability argument and Peter van Inwagen's argument that the PSR entails modal fatalism. Pruss also provides a number of positive arguments for the PSR, based on considerations as different as the metaphysics of existence, counterfactuals and modality, negative explanations, and the everyday applicability of the PSR. Moreover, Pruss shows how the PSR would advance the discussion in a number of disparate fields, including meta-ethics and the philosophy of mathemaTrade ReviewThe scope of the book is truly encyclopaedic...Pruss’s book is an excellent summary of arguments for and against Principle of Sufficient Reason, and will provide much food for thought for philosophers of many different persuasions. - Kevin Davey, University of Chicago, Religious Studies"This is a masterly treatment of the Principle of Sufficient Reason in a multitude of its philosophical guises and contexts...the book is an excellent achievement, and I can think of no sufficient reason why it should not grace the shelves of any philosopher." --Dean Rickles, University of Calgary: Philosophy in ReviewTable of Contents1 Introduction; 2. Cambridge University Press Adam Smith and the Character of Virtue
Book SynopsisThis book revisits the moral and political philosophy of Adam Smith, capitalism's founding father, to recover his understanding of morality in a market age. Focusing on Smith's analysis of the psychological and social ills endemic to commercial society, Hanley argues Smith sought to combat corruption by cultivating the virtues of prudence, magnanimity and beneficence.Trade ReviewReviews of the hardback: 'Ryan Patrick Hanley's excellent Adam Smith and the Character of Virtue succeeds in bringing a fresh perspective to the study of Smith's works. It offers a brilliant reinterpretation of Smith's moral philosophy that not only unifies Smith's work but offers larger lessons for us today. In an increasingly crowded field, Adam Smith and the Character of Virtue distinguishes itself as one of the most important books on Smith in more than a decade.' James Otteson, Yeshiva University'An original view of Adam Smith, arguing that he goes beyond self-interest and sympathy to the nobility of classical virtue. Ryan Hanley shows calm intelligence, fairness, and accuracy in this impressive new interpretation.' Harvey Mansfield, Professor of Government, Harvard University'The great originality of Ryan Hanley's book is twofold: first it exhibits Smith's pervasive, surprising, and previously ignored focus on 'nobility.' Even more surprising is that Hanley is persuasive in explaining how in deploying this concept, Smith attempts to merge Christian and Pagan virtues appropriate to commercial times. Second it shows that Smith offers his readers a program of self-actualization that can transform their various manifestations of self-love into socially beneficial activities. In the process, Hanley puts to rest the idea that Smith was sanguine in relying on market forces or the invisible hand alone. Moreover, Hanley shows how Smith capitalized on humanity's religious longings. Hanley wisely avoids the question about Smith's religious views and focuses on Smith's treatment of the role(s) of religion in commercial society. By letting Smith regularly engage with Aristotle, Rousseau, and Tocqueville, Hanley makes Smith seem like a helpful and instructive companion in a world where the victory of Liberalism and Enlightenment are not to be taken for granted. Along the way, Hanley articulates a detailed account of Smith's intellectual development over time.' Eric Schliesser, Leiden University, editor of New Voices on Adam SmithTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1. The problem: commerce and corruption; 2. The solution: moral philosophy; 3. Interlude: the what and the how of TMS VI; 4. Prudence, or commercial virtue; 5. Magnanimity, or classical virtue; 6. Beneficence, or Christian virtue; Epilogue.

Cambridge University Press Dilthey Selected Writings
Book SynopsisDilthey is a figure of real importance in European philosophy and social theory. He exerted a significant influence on Husserl, Heidegger and Weber (among others) through his work on the nature of philosophy and the methodology and epistemology of human and social studies. He was also a distinguished and original historian of ideas and, indeed, many of his philosophical interests arose from the insights and practical difficulties he encountered as a historian. He produced a monumental biography of Schleiermacher, and a series of shorter, but no less striking studies of Hegel, Dickens, Shakespeare, Schiller and many others.Trade Review"...Over three and a half decades later, Rickman's book carries the hope of introducing Dilthey to a new generation of readers.... Rickman's Selected Writings provides an excellent introduction to Dilthey. Rickman provides a brief survey of Dilthey for those who are unfamiliar with his work. He includes passages on a variety of topics and methods that Dilthey explored, and thus grants this thinker the broad scope he deserves. Rickman also provides helpful commentary which connects the various themes and underlines the coherence of Dilthey's thought as a whole. In addition, Rickman orients the reader by providing a general introduction with a summary of key concepts, as well as section introductions to give information about the excerpts: why they were selected, and the significance of each selection for Dilthey's philosophical project. Rickman unravels the ideas and explains them in clear, relatable terms. As a whole, the book is very approachable." --Rebecca Hansen, Emory University, Philosophy NowTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1.
