  • Taylor & Francis Ltd (Sales) Kant for Architects Thinkers for Architects

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book introduces architects to a philosopher, Immanuel Kant, whose work was constantly informed by a concern for the world as an evolving whole. According to Kant, in this interconnected and dynamic world, humans should act as mutually dependent and responsible subjects. Given his future-oriented and ethico-politically concerned thinking, Kant is a thinker who clearly speaks to architects. This introduction demonstrates how his ideas bear pertinently and creatively upon the world in which we live now and for which we should care thoughtfully. Kant grounded his enlightened vision of philosophyâs mission using an architectural metaphor: of the modest 'dwelling-house'. Far from constructing speculative 'castles in the sky' or vertiginous 'towers which reach to the heavens', he tells us that his humble aim is rather to build a 'secure home for ourselves', one which appropriately corresponds at once to the limited material resources available on our planet, and to our need for firm and solid principles to live by. This book also explores Kant's notions of cosmopolitics, which attempts to think politics from a global perspective by taking into account the geographical fact that the earth is a sphere with limited land mass and natural resources. Given the urgent topicality of sustainable development, these Kantian texts are of particular interest for architects of today.Students of architecture, who are necessarily trained in negotiating between theory and practice, gain much from considering Kant, whose critical project also consisted of testing and exploring the viability of ideas, so as to ascertain to what extent, and crucially, how ideas can have a constructive effect on the whole world, and on us as active agents therein.Trade Review'Diane Morgan's study on Immanuel Kant and his relevance to architectural thought and theory is a magnificent, thoughtful and provocative study of Kant's ideas about building and dwelling, but more importantly, of his notions of cosmopolitics which introduce a global perspective to the idea of building homes and worlds. Indeed, Kant's 'cosmic' and holistic understanding of the world is a necessary underpinning for any theory of sustainability, ecology and the cosmopolitan spirit.' - Prof Nicole Pohl, Editor of Utopian Studies, UK'In this brief and yet eloquent introduction to the evolving relationship between Kant's critical philosophy and the theory and practice of architecture Diane Morgan demonstrates with critical verve, lucid erudition and a wide range of vivid and luminous examples from both architecture and philosophy how the Vitruvian architectural virtues of integrity, utility and aesthetic delight can apply as much to an account of the dialogue between these two disciplines as to the problems or questions encountered within them.' - Dr. Charlie Blake, University of West London, UKTable of ContentsIntroduction: Why Kant Now? 1. • Taylor & Francis The Routledge Companion to the Philosophy of Race

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFor many decades, race and racism have been common areas of study in departments of sociology, history, political science, English, and anthropology. Much more recently, as the historical concept of race and racial categories have faced significant scientific and political challenges, philosophers have become more interested in these areas. This changing understanding of the ontology of race has invited inquiry from researchers in moral philosophy, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of science, philosophy of language, and aesthetics. The Routledge Companion to Philosophy of Race offers in one comprehensive volume newly written articles on race from the worldâs leading analytic and continental philosophers. It is, however, accessible to a readership beyond philosophy as well, providing a cohesive reference for a wide student and academic readership. The Companion synthesizes current philosophical understandings of race, providing 37 chapters on the history of philosophy and race as well as how race might be investigated in the usual frameworks of contemporary philosophy. The volume concludes with a section on philosophical approaches to some topics with broad interest outside of philosophy, like colonialism, affirmative action, eugenics, immigration, race and disability, and post-racialism.By clearly explaining and carefully organizing the leading current philosophical thinking on race, this timely collection will help define the subject and bring renewed understanding of race to students and researchers in the humanities, social science, and sciences.Trade Review"This important and timely volume addresses foundational questions concerning the impact of racial ideologies and practices on the development of Western philosophy. These interventions, profound in their ontological, epistemological and political implications, will be of keen interest to philosophers and other scholars working to better grasp the enduring legacies of racism."--Steven Gregory, Columbia University"A timely and telling collection on the philosophy of race in the critical tradition. The volume grapples in the terms of both the European and counter-European philosophical traditions concerning the driving questions of race and racism today. This is a critically valuable study of philosophical canons and disciplinary practices regarding race. A volume that is as productive to think about as it is to teach."--David Theo Goldberg, University of California, IrvineTable of ContentsTable of ContentsIntroductionHistory and the Canon Critical Philosophy of Race and Philosophical Historiography Robert Bernasconi Of Problem Moderns and Excluded Moderns: On the Essential Hybridity of Modernity Oluìfeìòmi TaìiìwoÌ Kant on Race and Transition Frank Kirkland Hegel on Race and Development Frank Kirkland Heidegger’s Shadow: Levinas, Arendt, and the Magician from Messkirch Jonathan Judaken Race-ing the Canon: American Icons, from Thomas Jefferson to Alain Locke Jacoby Carter At the Intersections: Existentialism, Critical Philosophies of Race, and Feminism Kathryn Gines Critical Theory: Adorno, Marcuse, and Angela Davis Arnold Farr Poststructuralism and Race: Giorgio Agamben and Michel Foucault Ladelle McWhorter Alternative Traditions Rights, Race, and the Beginnings of Modern Africana Philosophy Chike Jeffers Africana Thought Lewis Gordon Theorizing Indigeneity, Gender, and Settler Colonialism Kyle Whyte and Shelbi Nahwilet Meissner The History of Racial Theories in China Frank Dikötter Racism in India Ania Loomba Metaphysics and Ontology Analytic Metaphysics: Race and Racial Identity Jorge J.
