  • Das Tier in dogmatischer Perspektive: Neuere

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Das Tier in dogmatischer Perspektive: Neuere

    1 in stock

  • A Gift from England: William Ames and his

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG A Gift from England: William Ames and his

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is the first extensive study of William Amess (1576-1633) Latin polemical writings against Arminianism during his exile in the Dutch Republic. Through these writings, Ames quickly established himself as a champion of Reformed orthodoxy. This reputation led him to be appointed as a theological advisor to the president of the Synod of Dort (1618-9) and then to be nominated for the newly established chair of practical theology at Leiden University. The Dutch Reformed theologian who compiled Amess Latin works believed that Ames was indeed a precious gift from England. By exploring Amess significant but neglected Latin corpus, this book uncovers Amess theological contributions to the central issues of the Arminian controversy. It provides a corrective to current readings of Amess theology by highlighting the links between his polemical writings and his better-known work, The Marrow of Theology. Ames was not, as previous scholarship has suggested, making a compromise or softening Reformed thought by finding a needed corrective in Arminianism. Instead, he was steadfastly defending the Reformed tradition against the threat of Arminianism without being blind to new philosophical and exegetical challenges. By exploring the medieval scholastic background behind his key arguments, this book also addresses the recent scholarly debate about the medieval roots of early modern Reformed thought. It shows that, by combining Thomistic ideas of physical premotion with Scotistic metaphysics of contingency, Ames trod a path which many other Reformed theologians would follow.

    2 in stock

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Kirche

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Protestant church theory views the church as a modern organization, as a social institution and as a staging of the Christian faith. Michael Meyer-Blanck explains sociological, legal, cultural and theological perspectives in his work in a generally understandable way and assigns them to each other. In 15 chapters, the author deals firstly with the basics of Protestant church theory (including a brief outline of church history), secondly with perspectives such as church and state, church and politics, Protestant and Catholic church and thirdly with the situations in which one comes into contact with the church : Church services on Sunday and in the individual CV, church membership, church tax, parish offices and church professions, committees and power structures. A chapter is also devoted to dealing with sexuality and sexualised violence. Finally, the aesthetic reality of the church plays an important role: the church building, the church art and the church music make up the beautiful side of the church, which is not only there for the church members.

  • Stellvertretung: Studien zur theologischen

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Stellvertretung: Studien zur theologischen

    3 in stock

Book Synopsis"The Baptist movement is a post-Reformation church in the Reformation tradition, as it was understood and received by English Puritanism on its separatist wing. Since its inception, it has not been uniform but varied. In this volume, therefore, numerous contributions by different authors are combined, each in the translation of the editor, which is initially devoted to the emergence and development of the Baptist movement, then to its missionary endeavors and to the Baptist teachings. After a separate subsection on women in the Baptist movement, a comprehensive overview of Baptists in all parts of the world rounds off the overall picture. "

  • Crimen Obicere: Forensic Rhetoric and Augustine's

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Crimen Obicere: Forensic Rhetoric and Augustine's

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisWe all know that Augustine was a teacher of rhetoric before he became a highly influential Church leader. We know that he never stopped using rhetoric as a bishop. What we do not always know is what we mean by Augustines rhetoric. Is it the style, the figures of speech, encrypted in strange names like hendiadys or homoioteleuton? We also know that Augustine wrote letters throughout his ecclesiastical career, some of them highly polemical. The scholars tend to see the ancient correspondence as a part of a celebrated ritual of friendship. But has Augustine really used the letters written in the heat of the Donatist controversy within this cultural context? For decades the works of Augustine have been of interest mostly for Church historians and theologians, and rightly so. It is worth noticing, however, that the people who read or listened to them at the time of their composition were alumni of rhetorical and law schools, where they had to read Ciceros speeches and learn from rhetorical handbooks (some authored by himself, other written under his influence). The aim of this study is to prove that Augustines polemical correspondence is teeming with examples of rhetorical tricks commonly used in courtroom argumentation. I argue that the backbone of Augustines anti-Donatist letters, that is his patterns of argumentation and strategies of persuasion, is largely formed by the techniques of forensic rhetoric. My aim here is to offer an insight into how Augustine used rhetorical tools inherited from classical theory in building and developing polemical strategies in his anti-Donatist letters. This study should expand our knowledge on such various topics as history of rhetoric, ancient epistolography, polemical literature and Augustines art as a polemicist.

  • Systematic Theology as a Rationally Justified

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Systematic Theology as a Rationally Justified

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisFor centuries it has been discussed whether systematic theology is a scientific discipline. But it is not obvious what is meant by either systematic theology or scientific discipline. Michael Agerbo Mørch presents an understanding of systematic theology as a tripartite discipline and science as a rationally justified public discourse about a given topic. Systematic theology is shown to meet the most generally accepted criteria for scientific work, since its theories can be tested and even falsified in an intersubjective setting. This can be done by the most proper tool we have for assessing and comparing scientific theories, which is coherence theory. Therefore, even though systematic theology is a distinct and normative discipline, it is not compromising for its theories because it can present its theses in a transparent way that can be checked and criticized by peers and compared to relevant alternatives. As such, the book shows that systematic theology is a scientifically strong discourse that meets accepted criteria to the same degree as other disciplines.

Book SynopsisJohn Calvin had a keen interest in what the Scriptures teach about the nature and faculties, as well as the role and responsibilities, of human beings. For him, the proper way were created: in the image and likeness of God.Jason Van Vliet examines Calvins's explanation of the imago Dei within the times and ecclesiastical circumstances in which he lived. He aims at giving a satisfactory answer to the question of whether Calvins's teaching on the imago Dei can be considered one of the stronger or weaker points of his reformatory work.

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume contains the results of research into the dialogue between theology and biology, particularly neuroscience and evolutionary theory. With regard to neuroscience, the representational paradigm is abandoned in favor of the ecological brain theory, which understands the brain as an organ of resonance between the living body and its surrounding environment. In relation to theological epistemology, this account not only leads to fruitful convergences, but also shows that revelation, as perception of Gods triune presence in creation, has to be understood as a resonating and non extra-ordinary or general kind of perception, instead of being a special interpretation of experiences that are beyond the ordinary. With regard to the theory of evolution, the Neodarwinian paradigm is expanded with the help of the theory of niche-construction, in which the relationship between organisms and their environment is understood to be reciprocally resonating. This new and emerging paradigm in biology fits to a relational-narrative theological ontology, in which the relationship between the life of the triune God and creation can be modeled on basis of the key metaphor of niche construction understood as a reciprocally resonating dramatic coherence. Theologically, Markus Mühling presents a theory of revelation as perception and a relational-narrative ontology based on the concept of dramatic coherence, in which the triune life is understood not as an exception to ontology, but as the decisive condition of its possibility. For neuroscience and evolutionary theory it provides the insight that taking the concepts of internally related external relata and a phenomenological approach into account leads to new horizons for solving those problems seen in certain older paradigms as posing irreconcilable contradictions. Mühling also argues that a dialogue between theology and the natural sciences in order to be fruitful must be maintained in relative dependence and independence, that any such dialogue must take philosophical considerations into account, and that it is decisive for each of the dialogue partners to speak on behalf of their proper and particular areas of research. The proposed results also reflect the authors participation in the dialogue between leading theologians and scientists at the Center of Theological Inquiry, Princeton (NJ) on Evolution and Human Nature in 2013.

Especially the new challenges of today require to contemplate newly the fundaments of our Christian belief: the revelation of God, gratitude, the Christian sermon. Trowitzsch applies Barth's theology critically on the present. The author sets off a dialogue between Barth's theology and philosophy, the arts and poetry of the modern age and of German or European origin achieving a diverse discussion.
