Taylor & Francis Philosophy of Evolutionary Biology Volume I The
Book SynopsisThe impact of evolutionary theory on the philosophy of science has been no less profound than its impact on the science of biology itself. Advances in this theory provide a rich set of examples for thinking about the nature of scientific explanation and the structure of science. Many of the developments in our understanding of evolution resulted from contributions by both philosophers and biologists engaging over theoretical questions of mutual interest. This volume traces some of the most influential exchanges in this field over the last few decades. Focal topics include the nature of biological functions, adaptationism as an explanatory and methodological doctrine, the levels of selection debate, the concepts of fitness and drift, and the relationship of evolutionary to developmental biology.Table of ContentsContents: Introduction; Part I Function and Purpose in Biology: Functions as selected effects: the conceptual analyst's defense, Karen Neander; A modern history theory of functions, Peter Godfrey-Smith; Function without purpose: the uses of causal role function in evolutionary biology, Ron Amundson and George V. Lauder; Function, homology and character individuation, Paul E. Griffiths. Part II Adaptionism, Optimality and Adaptive Co-Variation: Adaptationism and the power of selection, Peter Godfrey-Smith; Optimality models and the test of adaptionism, Steven Hecht Orzack and Elliott Sober; Testing adaptationism: a comment on Orzack and Sober, Robert N. Mills and John H. Beatty; Chance and natural selection, John Beatty; The indeterministic character of evolutionary theory: no 'no hidden variables proof' but no room for determinism either, Robert N. Brandon and Scott Carson; Is indeterminism the source of the statistical character of evolutionary theory?, Leslie Graves, Barbara L. Horan and Alex Rosenberg; Are random drift and natural selection conceptually distinct?, Roberta L. Millstein; The trials of life: natural selection and random drift, Denis M. Cambridge University Press The New Cambridge Companion to Aquinas
Book SynopsisThis new Companion to Aquinas features entirely new chapters written by internationally recognized experts in the field. Taylor & Francis Ltd Personal Identity and Buddhist Philosophy
Book SynopsisSince the publication of Mark Siderits'' important book in 2003, much has changed in the field of Buddhist philosophy. There has been unprecedented growth in analytic metaphysics, and a considerable amount of new work on Indian theories of the self and personal identity has emerged. Fully revised and updated, and drawing on these changes as well as on developments in the author''s own thinking, Personal Identity and Buddhist Philosophy, second edition explores the conversation between Buddhist and Western Philosophy showing how concepts and tools drawn from one philosophical tradition can help solve problems arising in another. Siderits discusses afresh areas involved in the philosophical investigation of persons, including vagueness and its implications for personal identity, recent attempts by scholars of Buddhist philosophy to defend the attribution of an emergentist account of personhood to at least some Buddhists, and whether a distinctively Buddhist antirealism can avoid problemTrade Review’Siderits’s fusion philosophy replaces comparative philosophy, but this book transcends even his fusion philosophy.’ Chang-Seong Hong, Minnesota State University Moorhead, USA ’Mark Siderits is one of the few philosophers in the world today who is equally expert in Buddhist philosophy and contemporary analytic philosophy; who is as lucid and penetrating on ethical matters as on metaphysical ones; and who, as a scholar of Buddhist thought, can charitably discuss Abhidharma discourse with as much ease and insight as he can handle the themes of Mahayana philosophy. This book is especially valuable for its balanced treatment of these two major streams of Buddhist philosophy, the first half exploring - and extending - an Abhidharma approach to personhood and psychological reality, and the second half illuminating Mahayana approaches with a rare analytic clarity. Though balanced in its scholarship, the book is also stirringly provocative in its philosophical argumentation. Despite divergences between the two Buddhist traditions, Siderits highlights points of convergence, ones that he supports ingeniously with additional philosophical argument of his own. Already seminal in its first appearance, this second edition significantly refines the arguments and conceptual apparatus that Siderits uses to support his ecumenically Buddhist understanding of life, value and experience.’ Gordon Davis, Carleton University, Canada Praise for the 1st edition: 'Analytic philosophers should be awakened from their East-shunning dogmatic slumber by this seductive synthesis of vintage Buddhism, philosophical ingenuity and analytical rigour. In this path-breaking study in Buddhism-inspired analytic philosophy , Mark Siderits has critically reconstructed the intricate chain of arguments behind Buddhist reductionism and anti-realism about persons. ...Siderits establishes himself as one of those handful of contemporary philosophers of language who can handle Indian and Western materiaTable of ContentsPreface to the first edition; Preface to the second edition; Introduction; Situating reductionism; Refuting the self; Getting impersonal; Wholes, parts and emergence; Ironic engagement; Establishing emptiness; Empty knowledge; The turn of the true; Empty persons;

Cambridge University Press Jesus and the Genome
Book SynopsisIs a coherent worldview that embraces both classical Christology and modern evolutionary biology possible? This volume explores this fundamental question through an engaged inquiry into key topics, including the Incarnation, the process of evolution, modes of divine action, the nature of rationality, morality, chance and love, and even the meaning of life. Grounded alike in the history and philosophy of science, Christian theology, and the scientific basis for evolutionary biology and genetics, the volume discusses diverse thinkers, both medieval and modern, ranging from Augustine and Aquinas to contemporary voices like Richard Dawkins and Michael Ruse. Aiming to show how a biologically informed Christian worldview is scientifically, theologically, and philosophically viable, it offers important perspectives on the worldview of evolutionary naturalism, a prominent perspective in current science?religion discussions. The authors argue for the intellectual plausibility of a comprehensive worldview perspective that embraces both Christology and evolution biology in intimate relationship.

Taylor & Francis On the Resurrection of the Dead
Book SynopsisChristian tradition has largely held three theological affirmations on the resurrection of the physical body. Firstly, that bodily resurrection is not a superfluous hope of afterlife. Secondly, there is immediate post-mortem existence in Paradise. Finally, there is numerical identity between pre-mortem and post-resurrection human beings. The same tradition also largely adheres to a robust doctrine of The Intermediate State, a paradisiacal disembodied state of existence following the biological death of a human being. This book argues that these positions are in fact internally inconsistent, and so a new theological model for life after death is required. The opening arguments of the book aim to show that The Intermediate State actually undermines the necessity of bodily resurrection. Additionally, substance dualism, a principle The Intermediate State requires, is shown to be equally untenable in this context. In response to this, the metaphysics of the afterlife in ChrTrade Review"James T. Turner’s On the Resurrection of the Dead is an important contribution to the literature on analytic theology, which helpfully integrates philosophy of religion, biblical studies, and systematic theology. Provocatively, Turner critically objects to a traditional view of Christian anthropology and develops a fascinating case for the immediate resurrection view of the afterlife."– Joshua R. Farris, Houston Baptist University and Heythrop College, University of London"Turner makes an original and significant theological contribution to the resurgent debate about substance dualism as he explores the question of afterlife in Christian theology. Notably, Turner rejects substance dualism not because it lacks philosophical coherence but because he finds it inconsistent with his view of the overriding theological importance of embodiment in afterlife. The work moves deftly across the philosophical and theological landscape to challenge the consistency of a disembodied intermediate state, advocating instead an immediate resurrection underpinned by a novel combination of hylemorphism and eschatological presentism. The book gives substance dualists reason to check their theological foundations and is an excellent example of contemporary analytic theology."– Jonathan J. Loose, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy and Psychology, Heythrop College, University of London"Turner’s engagement with the subject is intelligent and creative, and merits serious attention from serious scholars."- Daniel Lendman, Reading ReligionTable of ContentsForeword by Oliver D. Taylor & Francis Ltd Ethical Monotheism
Book SynopsisThe term Ethical Monotheism is an important marker in Judaism's tumultuous transition into the modern era. The term emerged in the context of culture-wars concerning the question of whether or not Jews could or should become emancipated citizens of modern European states. It appeared in arguments whether or not Judaism could be considered a Religion of Reasona symbolic, motivational representation of a universal morality, and in debates about whether or not Judaism could or should reform itself into a Religion of Reason. This book is both a decisive departure from such discussions and an attempt to add a further, post-modern, statement to their ongoing development. As departure, it refuses to take for granted a philosophical conception of Religion of Reason as the standard for Ethical Monotheism according to which Judaism was to be evaluated or reformed. As continuation, the book undertakes a phenomenology of Jewish modes of ethical religiosity that allowTable of ContentsIntroduction: Holistic Study of Judaism 1. Taylor & Francis Ltd The God of Philosophy: An Introduction to
Book SynopsisFor centuries philosophers have argued about the existence and nature of God. Do we need God to explain the origins of the universe? Can there be morality without a divine source of goodness? How can God exist when there is so much evil and suffering in the world? All these questions and many more are brought to life with clarity and style in The God of Philosophy. The arguments for and against God's existence are weighed up, along with discussion of the meaning of religious language, the concept of God and the possibility of life after death. This new edition brings the debate right up to date by exploring the philosophical arguments of the new atheists such as Richard Dawkins, as well as considering what the latest discoveries in science can tell us about why many believe in the existence of the divine.Trade Review"A timely addition to resources ... illuminating without being overbearing." - Times Educational SupplementTable of ContentsIntroduction 1.
