  • The Case for Religion

Oneworld Publications The Case for Religion

Book SynopsisLong before the release of The God Delusion, Keith Ward was defending religious belief on all sides from its detractors. In the new paperback edition of this influential bestseller, Keith Ward examines the arguments put forward by a host of scientists, sociologists, and psychologists, who claim that religion is nothing more than a host of naïve superstitions and delusions. Exploring the work of thinkers from Sigmund Freud to Emile Durkheim, Ward offers an alternative view, demonstrating religion’s key contribution to the human condition and its crucial relevance to the world today.Trade Review"a lively and interesting survey" * Reviews in Religion and Theology *"This book contains all the familiar War characteristics of clarity, verve and humour." * Church Times *"A lively and interesting survey" * Reviews in Religion and Theology *"The book offers a simple introduction to its main features and provides a useful basic background as well as an invaluable resource for visual material, with clear photo-copiable line drawings of important features of a world faith, together with explanatory text." * Christian Marketplace *"He writes so well that this rather difficult subject becomes completely gripping." * The Good Book Guide *"Professor Ward will convince most reasonable readers that human nature would be poorer if the religious impulse were denied. • Philosophy of Religion: A Beginner's Guide

Oneworld Publications Philosophy of Religion: A Beginner's Guide

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisA much-needed introductory level book on this widely studied subject. Isaac Asimov said that "whatever the tortures of hell, I think the boredom of heaven would be even worse." Such quandaries are the bread and butter of philosophy of religion. Questioning why evil exists, whether God could create a stone he couldn’t lift, and if the wonder of life suggests a Creator, this fascinating branch of philosophy is concerned with arguments for and against religion, and what form an immortal god (or gods) would take if in existence. Assuming no prior knowledge of philosophy from the reader, Taliaferro provides a clear exploration of the discipline, introducing a wide range of philosophers and covering the topics of morality and religion, evil, the afterlife, prayer, and miracles. Also containing sections dedicated to Hinduism, Buddhism and the Eastern religions, this helpful primer is perfect for students or the general reader.

Quercus Publishing Dangerous Illusions: How Religion Deprives Us Of

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisBased on 10 years of dedicated research, Dangerous Illusions is a battle cry for the human race to throw off religion in favour of logic and reason. In this committed and passionate book, author Vitaly Malkin - a philanthropist, business man and investor - argues for a radical shift in humanity's thinking about religion; that reason and religion cannot co-exist, and that mankind will only be truly happy if we are able to shake off the illusions of religion in order to live a life more rooted in the present. Dangerous Illusions sets out to explore the irrational demands that religion makes of man and asks the reader to question what benefit these acts offer human beings in this life. Malkin scrutinises topics such as suffering and evil, pleasure and asceticism, sex and celibacy, and circumcision and excision, through the lens of the three major world monotheistic religions - Christianity, Islam and Judaism. In doing so, the book fearlessly refutes our most careless beliefs, encouraging us to be more aware of the dangers religions pose to our society and, even to change our intellectual practices altogether.

  • Antitheologie: Theologische Spuren bei Martin

JCB Mohr (Paul Siebeck) Antitheologie: Theologische Spuren bei Martin

    1 in stock

    1 in stock

    1 in stock

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisText in German. How can God allow evil in the world? This question of theodicy (God's justification in the face of suffering and evil in the world) marks the intersection of theology and philosophy. To put it in terms of everyday life: How can God (if he exists) allow wars to wipe out entire ethnic groups, that thousands of people fall victim to natural disasters, so that evil is apparently more powerful than good? This book is not about a belated justification of God in the face of the victims of history, but about the question: How must and can one speak of God at all in view of the history of suffering of mankind and of creation as a whole? "Theistic" premises such as omnipotence and omnipotence are called into question. Instead, a new approach to this problem is attempted using biblical and theological case studies (Abraham, Hiob, D. Bonhoeffer, H. Jonas, J. B. Metz). At the end of the book, the old question of evil is therefore explicitly taken up again. This second edition has been supplemented to better prepare the author's proposal for overcoming the problem of theodicy.

Book Synopsisn terms of concept and layout, the teaching work follows the volume Competent Evangelical 5 from 2017 and 6 from 2018. An important core concern of the volume is to guide the pupils to learn independently with competent support from the teacher. There is increasing emphasis on knowledge of the most important operators and on the independent acquisition and transfer of knowledge. The five learning areas of the curriculum correspond to five interlinked chapters that can be combined in different ways; they are supplemented by a concluding method chapter, which allows you to independently look up and deepen the methodological knowledge you have acquired. 7.1 Faith becomes visible: We understand the central role of the Holy Spirit and learn how and where he works faith. Faith becomes visible to us and others in church construction from different eras and in different elements of worship. 7.2 Church begins: We learn how Pentecost marks the birth of the Church and how the first Christians lived their faith. With Paul we get to know one of the founders of Christianity and discover how the persecution of the first Christians came to an end with Emperor Constantine. 7.3 Muslims in our area: We learn the basics about Islam, the prophet and the five pillars and see how the everyday life of Muslims is determined by their religion. In comparison with Christianity, we discover similarities and differences - and how we deal well with different conflict issues. 7.4 Mirror, mirror on the wall: We think about how wishes are influenced by the media and role models, and discover the Christian faith and biblical visions as an important source of impulses for a life-friendly handling of our desires. We recognize that longings can lead to addiction and dependency on the one hand, but on the other hand can also motivate people to realize their visions of a better world. 7.5 Supporting each other: We perceive the need for help in our environment and think about the possibilities and limits of our help. We recognize the great importance of charity from biblical stories and can demonstrate its implementation in the helping actions of the Church in the past and today. 6. Methods: Operators / Digital presentation / Feedback / Group puzzle / Radio play / Pro and contra debate / Presentation / Thesis rally / Word collage / Selected methods from class 6. All chapters also refer to methods that were learned in the sixth year of school to activate spiral and networked learning at appropriate points. The lexicon, which also rounds off this volume, lists many new terms, but also already contains explanations in volume 5, insofar as it also plays a role in the texts of the 6th school year. Possible presentation topics, which are distributed over the chapters, are listed in a directory for better preselection.

  • Brill Projections of Spanish Jesuit Scholasticism on

Book SynopsisSpanish Jesuits such as Francisco Suárez (1548–1617), José de Acosta (1540–1600), Pedro de Ribadeneira (1526-1611) and Juan de Mariana (1536-1624) had a powerful impact on English thinkers of the magnitude of John Locke (1632–1704), Francis Bacon (1561-1626), Robert Persons (1546-1610), Algernon Sidney (1623-1683), and, later, William Robertson (1721–1793), Thomas de Quincey (1785–1859) and Hilaire Belloc (1870–1953). An influence that was sometimes hidden and always controversial. This work highlights the importance of this influence regarding thought on politics, law and natural rights. A constitutionalist understanding of political power, the recognition and promotion of innate rights and the necessary subjection of rulers to the law, all form part of the important legacy of these scholastic doctors for European intellectual heritage. Book SynopsisSince Sankara Saranam's groundbreaking book God Without Religion was released 10 years ago, thousands have been enlightened by his teachings and revelations. Now, in this special 10-year anniversary edition, Sankara returns with new insights and a renewed message of spiritual guidance and inspiration. Disillusioned with organized religion, millions of people turn to secular humanism, neo-atheism, New Age thinking, Eastern religious practices, and mysticism while others retreat from spirituality altogether. A more satisfying and transformative option is to embark on a quest to discover what is real to you. Using time-tested tools of investigation into your own sense of self, you can examine your present beliefs, explore the nature of reality, and ultimately expand your identity and awareness. God Without Religion introduces this age-old approach to self-inquiry for today's readers. Step by step, it offers a bridge between organized religion and self-realization for anyone questioning traditional dogma or its legacy of divisiveness. It also assists in overcoming limitations and notions of exclusivity promoted by modern-day movements. Included are 17 universal techniques for developing a personal understanding of the underlying substance of existence and broadening your view of yourself, others, and all of life. This updated edition includes new details about Sankara's personal experiences with each technique. These highly relatable new passages will help you connect with each concept in a personal way, so that you can discover--or rediscover--your own spiritual path to clarity.Trade Review"God Without Religion asks some difficult questions and advocates a more intelligent and thoughtful approach to the spiritual life... Read it slowly, in sections, and become a positive influence toward religious understanding in the world." --Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul and Dark Nights of the Soul "This fine, fierce, wise, and deeply helpful book challenges everyone to find a direct relationship with the divine beyond the confines of the past, and offers rich advice and a bevy of powerful practices that can sustain such a relationship and continue to expand it." --Andrew Harvey, author of The Direct Path and Sun at Midnight "In this day when religions seem to be caught in stages of mindnumbing dogma, justification of violence, and meaningless ritual that do no more than sanctify greed and secular superiority, Sankara Saranam's book offers hope and relief. You don't have to be Jewish, Christian, or Muslim to see the real message here--God is part of us all and Western religions may be getting in the way of that realization if they continue on their present paths." --Fred Alan Wolf, Ph.D., theoretical physicist, author of The Yoga of Time Travel, and a National Book Award winner "This book's bold message is vital. It is a path straight up the mountain that avoids the swamps of religious dithering, divisiveness, and destructiveness. It is a way out of darkness. It affirms the unity of all humans not only with one another, but with all of life and the Absolute. If we are to survive on the earth, heeding this message is not merely optional but required." --Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Healing Beyond the Body and Reinventing Medicine "This is a courageous, stand-out book for readers ready to part the veil of illusion and see the truth that every religious tradition must periodically and systematically reexamine itself and account for its teachings." --Meredith Jordan, author of Embracing the Mystery "Written with clarity and elegance, [God Without Religion] explores the mysteries of faith and spiritual commitment with sensitivity and wisdom." --Ahrar Ahmad, PH.D., professor of political science, Black Hills State University "Sankara Saranam has created one of the most extraordinary books of our time ... presenting us with a historical perspective on the political underbelly of our organized religions, then drawing science and spirituality together to offer us a new profile of divinity--one that casts light on the relationship between human existence and the cosmos, one that extends salvation to us all." --Hank Wesselman, PH.D., anthropologist and author of The Spiritwalker Trilogy and The Journey to the Sacred Garden "God Without Religion is a rare book, combining spiritual insight and practice with social criticism and an appreciation of the many contradictions of modern life. I highly recommend this book for anyone seeking to maintain intellectual integrity while simultaneously retaining reverence for the unity of all things." --Jeffery Mishlove, PH.D., President, Intuition Network; author of The PK Man; and former host of Thinking Allowed, a national public television series "Unlike other books that tear religion down without offering anything in its place, God Without Religion sets out helpful alternative approaches to personal spirituality. This is an inspiring, positive, wonderful book that emphasizes the truth that we are spiritual beings making a human journey. Reading it will greatly enhance your personal relationship with the creator-energy." --Joseph Dispenzam, author of The Way of the Traveler and Live Better Longer "God Without Religion opens a door to spiritual practice that organized religions have closed for centuries. Sankara Saranam has written a spiritual masterpiece. I highly recommend it to all spiritual seekers." --Rev.

  • Arts of Wonder

University of Chicago Press Arts of Wonder

Book SynopsisThe fate of our times is characterized by rationalization and intellectualization and, above all, by 'the disenchantment of the world.' Max Weber's statement remains a dominant interpretation of the modern condition: the increasing capabilities of knowledge and science have banished mysteries, leaving a world that can be mastered technically and intellectually. And though this idea seems empowering, many people have become disenchanted with modern disenchantment. Using intimate encounters with works of art to explore disenchantment and the possibilities of re-enchantment, Arts of Wonder addresses questions about the nature of humanity, the world, and God in the wake of Weber's diagnosis of modernity. Jeffrey L. Kosky focuses on a handful of artists Walter De Maria, Diller + Scofidio, James Turrell, and Andy Goldsworthy to show how they introduce spaces hospitable to mystery and wonder, redemption and revelation, and transcendence and creation. What might be thought of as religious longings, he argues, are crucial aspects of enchanting secularity when developed through encounters with these works of art. Developing a model of religion that might be significant to secular culture, Kosky shows how this model can be employed to deepen interpretation of the art we usually view as representing secular modernity. A thoughtful dialogue between philosophy and art, Arts of Wonder will catch the eye of readers of art and religion, philosophy of religion, and art criticism.

Book SynopsisA century ago Canada was considered to be a Christian nation and the vast majority of Canadians claimed they were devoutly religious. But some vigorously resisted the dominance of Christianity. Towards a Godless Dominion explores both anti-religious activism and the organized opposition religious unbelievers faced from Canada in the 1920s and ’30s.Trade Review“Engaging, insightful, well-written, and solidly researched. Elliot Hanowski adds a new dimension to our understanding of religion and irreligion in twentieth-century Canada. The book further expands our knowledge of the religious spectrum in Canadian society, importantly deflecting attention away from the historic mainstream churches and beliefs.” David B. Marshall, University of Calgary and author of Secularizing the Faith: Canadian Protestant Clergy and the Crisis of Belief, 1850–1940“Towards a Godless Dominion reminds us that repression works. Elites remain as ready and able as ever to stifle the kinds of speech that they find threatening. It takes courage or at least eccentricity to resist them.” Literature Review of Canada
