Book SynopsisThis book investigates how we should form ourselves in a world saturated with technologies that are profoundly intruding in the very fabric of our selfhood. New and emerging technologies, such as smart technological environments, imaging technologies and smart drugs, are increasingly shaping who and what we are and influencing who we ought to be. How should we adequately understand, evaluate and appreciate this development? Tackling this question requires going beyond the persistent and stubborn inside-outside dualism and recognizing that what we consider our inside self is to a great extent shaped by our outside world. Inspired by various philosophers â especially Nietzsche, Peirce and Lacan âthis book shows how the values, goals and ideals that humans encounter in their environments not only shape their identities but also enable them to critically relate to their present state. The author argues against understanding technological self-formation in terms of making ourselveTrade Review“Understanding how self-formation works is crucial as we increasingly find ourselves in pervasive and intense technological environments. This book uses insights from Peirce, Nietzsche, Lacan and Freud to argue that the self is not only already unsettled, but becomes even more unsettled when technology, meant to enhance us, becomes an intrinsic part of us. The proposed interactionist perspective on self-formation and the concept of sublimation proposed by Ciano Aydin helps us to think about this problem and opens up new avenues for thinking about how new technologies mess with human existence as we struggle to integrate them into our lives.” – Mark Coeckelbergh, University of Vienna, Austria"This is a fascinating effort to reflect on how modern technologies have honed Nietzsche’s challenge, as he put it at the outset of his Genealogy of Morals: ‘We don't know ourselves, we knowledgeable people—we are personally ignorant about ourselves. And there's good reason for that. We've never tried to find out who we are.’ Ciano Aydin answers with an intriguing Technological Sublimation Theory." – Paul van Tongeren, Radboud University, The Netherlands"This work is a benchmark fusion of the philosophy of self with the philosophy of technology. Ciano Aydin addresses the ever increasing incorporation of new technologies into our way of life and exposes the current drift back toward essentialist and dualist thinking about self. Inspired by Nietzsche and Peirce, Aydin develops a radical interactionist view of the formation of selves, culminating in his Technological Sublimation Theory. Aydin’s application of his theory to examples of the permeation of new technologies throughout modern life lays the groundwork for a new research paradigm. Peirce’s normative thought and his philosophy of mind are treated masterfully throughout and the recognition of the resonance of some streams of Peirce’s thought with Nietzsche’s is long overdue." – Nathan Houser, Indiana University, Indianapolis, USATable of ContentsIntroductionPart I: What Is the Self?1. • Taylor & Francis The Philosophy of Fiction

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book presents new research on the crucial role that imagination plays in contemporary philosophy of fiction. The first part of the book challenges the main paradigm set by Kendall Walton and Gregory Currie, according to which there is a necessary connection between fiction and a prescription that we engage imaginatively with its content. The contributors address the fundamental questions of how we can define fiction, and especially whether we can define fiction in terms of imagination. The second part focuses on a distinct but related question: can we point to some distinctive experiential features of our engagement with fiction? In the third part, the focus lies on the cognitive value of fiction and on the role that imagination plays in that respect. The chapters in this part discuss the cognitive value of fiction with respect to issues such as the training of the faculty of imagination, phenomenal experience, empathy, and the emotions. The Philosophy of Fictio

This volume explores how the principles and values of pragmatic philosophy serve as orienting perspectives for critical thinking in contemporary psychotherapy and clinical practice. Drawing on the contributions of William James and John Dewey, Neuroscience, Psychotherapy, and Clinical Pragmatism introduces a model of clinical pragmatism emphasizing the individuality of the person, open-ended dialogue, experiential learning, and the practical outcomes of ideas and methods. In a second part, chapters show how recent developments in neuroscience and interpersonal neurobiology deepen our understanding of change and growth in accord with the principles of clinical pragmatism. Finally, the volume reviews paradigms of psychotherapy across the psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, and humanistic traditions. Case studies show how the pluralist orientation of clinical pragmatism enlarges concepts of therapeutic action. This text has been written for psychotherapists

  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Historical Experience

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume brings together a collection of recent essays on the philosophy and theory of history. This is a field of lively interdisciplinary discussion and research, to which historians, philosophers and theorists of culture and literature have contributed. The author is a philosopher by training, and his inspiration comes primarily from the continental-phenomenological tradition. Thus the influence of Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty and Ricoeur can be discerned here. This background opens up a unique perspective on the issues under discussion. Phenomenology differs from other philosophical approaches, like metaphysics and epistemology. Phenomenology asks, of anything that exists or may exist: how is it given, how does it enter our experience, what is our experience of it like? Very broadly we can say: phenomenology is about experience. At first glance, this approach may seem ill-suited to history. In our language, history usually means either 1) what happened, i.e. past eTable of ContentsIntroduction 1PART 1Historicity, narrative, and time 91 On historicity 112 Reflections on temporal perspective: the use and abuse of hindsight 243 The stories of our lives: aging and narrative 344 On being historical 46PART 2Teleology and history 595 Teleology and the experience of history 616 Husserl and Foucault on the historical a priori: teleological and anti-teleological views of history 757 Historical teleology: the grand illusion? 868 On the metaphilosophy of history 97PART 3Embodiment and experience 1139 Intersubjectivity and embodiment 11510 History as orientation: Rüsen on historical culture and narration 12811 Erlebnis and history 14412 Experience and history 153
