  • Critical Realism for Psychologists

    Taylor & Francis Critical Realism for Psychologists

    1 in stock

    Book SynopsisThis is the first dedicated text to explain and explore the utility of critical realism for psychologists, offering it as a helpful middle ground between positivism and postmodernism. By introducing its basic concepts, Pilgrim explains critical realism to psychologists and shows how the interface between the natural and social worlds, and the internal and external, can be used to examine human life. This both/and aspect of human life is important in another sense: we are both determined and determining beings, making choices but within the material constraints of both our bodies and the social context of our unique existence. The book offers an exploration of academic and applied psychology with that inward and outward curiosity in mind, beginning with the premise that both inner and outer reality are the legitimate interest of psychologists. In doing so, it shows how critical realism endorses the remaining advantages of positivism and postmodernism, while discarding their philosophical errors. A range of case studies are presented to show how psychologists can use critical realism when working with real life problems, as researchers or practitioners. Taylor & Francis The Explanation of Behaviour

    1 in stock

    Book SynopsisThe Explanation of Behaviour was the first book written by the renowned philosopher Charles Taylor. A vitally important work of philosophical anthropology, it is a devastating criticism of the theory of behaviourism, a powerful explanatory approach in psychology and philosophy when Taylor's book was first published. However, Taylor has far more to offer than a simple critique of behaviourism. He argues that in order to properly understand human beings, we must grasp that they are embodied, minded creatures with purposes, plans and goals, something entirely lacking in reductionist, scientific explanations of human behaviour.Taylorâs book is also prescient in according a central place to non-human animals, which like human beings are subject to needs, desires and emotions. However, because human beings have the unique ability to interpret and reflect on their own actions and purposes and declare them to others, Taylor argues that human experience differs to that of othTrade Review"A vehemently interesting book. • The Phenomena of Awareness

    Taylor & Francis Ltd The Phenomena of Awareness

    1 in stock

    Book SynopsisWhat is awareness? How is dreaming different from ordinary awareness? What does mathematics have to do with awareness? Are different kinds of awareness related? Awareness is commonly spoken of as mind, soul, spirit, consciousness, the unconscious, psyche, imagination, self, and other. The Phenomena of Awareness is a study of awareness as it is directly experienced.  From the start, Cecile T. Tougas engages the reader in reflective notice of awareness as it appears from moment to moment in a variety of ways. The book draws us in and asks us to focus on the flow of phenomena in living experience, not as a theoretical construct, nor an image, nor a biochemical product, but instead as phases, moments, or parts that cannot exist without one another. Tougas shows how these parts exist in mutual dependence as a continuum of awareness, as the flow of lived time, and how noticing time deepens psychological self-understanding and understanding of another.Trade Review"‘Jung would have appreciated clarification from Husserl’, says Tougas, a judgement that is justified by this short masterful book... It is written in the best new scientific style, which seamlessly melds both the subjective, that is, the experiences of Tougas as she writes the book, and the objective, the ideas of Husserl couched in his engendering experiences... Phenomena is an avowed labour of love and Tougas’s love illuminates everyone she writes about. As it is with us humans, the more we look, the more we see, and so we never tire of looking if the intent is exercised with thoughtfulness and agape-like goodwill, the attitude that the Kabbalah calls kavannah. To take this book in is once more to make such a journey oneself."- David Tresan, The Journal of Analytical PsychologyTable of ContentsPart 1 Seeking and noticing awareness; Chapter 1 Medieval Metaphysics; Chapter 2 The Equal; Chapter 3 Jung's “images” and Husserl's “phenomena”; Chapter 4 Edith Stein and Husserl in Göttingen; Chapter 5 Seeing the world as Husserl did; Chapter 6 World without soul; Chapter 7 Husserl, Jung, and the “unconscious”; Part 2 Observing and understanding the flow of phenomena; Chapter 8 Transfinite whole; Chapter 9 Transfinite number as limit and essence; Chapter 10 Subjectivity; Chapter 11 Double intenationality in time-consciousness; Part 3 Distinguishing intentional acts; Chapter 12 Memory and feeling; Chapter 13 Expectation and its double intentionality; Chapter 14 Double intentionality in dreaming; Chapter 15 Intentional activity as the work of spirit; Chapter 16 Nebulous knowing; Chapter 17 The Other in us; Part 4 Work in progress; Chapter 18 Analytical psychology; Chapter 19 Animus in a woman; Chapter 20 Child analysis and the dark mother;

  • Freud

    Taylor & Francis Ltd (Sales) Freud

    1 in stock

    Book SynopsisIn this fully updated second edition, the author clearly introduces and assesses all of Freud''s thought, focusing on those areas of philosophy on which Freud is acknowledged to have had a lasting impact. These include the philosophy of mind, free will and determinism, rationality, the nature of the self and subjectivity, and ethics and religion. He also considers some of the deeper issues and problems Freud engaged with, brilliantly illustrating their philosophical significance: human sexuality, the unconscious, dreams, and the theory of transference. The author''s approach emphasizes the philosophical significance of Freud's fundamental rule to say whatever comes to mind without censorship or inhibition. This binds psychoanalysis to the philosophical exploration of self-consciousness and truthfulness, as well as opening new paths of inquiry for moral psychology and ethics. The second edition includes a new Introduction and Conclusion. The text is revisedTrade Review"Probably the best philosophical introduction into the central ideas and concepts of Freud’s theories and practice." - The Guardian Praise for the first edition:"Jonathan Lear is one of the most subtle and original thinkers in psychoanalysis. So a book by him simply called Freud should attract everyone is at all psychoanalytically minded. They will not be disappointed. This is simply the best introduction to Freud I know." - Marcia Cavell, The International Journal of Psychoanalysis"This book will be viewed by philosophers interested in psychoanalysis as a major contribution. It will also be read and intensively discussed by many professors of literature and of intellectual history who lecture on Freud." - Richard Rorty"If I were to answer the question: who, among contemporary psychoanalysts, is best qualified to write an introduction to Freud as a philosopher, my choice would be: Jonathan Lear." - Slavoj Žižek, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia"Jonathan Lear succeeds brilliantly in revealing Freud’s philosophical significance … a philosophically ambitious, passionate and exciting book." - Sebastian Gardner, University College London, UK"Lear does very well to explain a fundamental modification in Freud's clinical work…this is definitely worthwhile for anyone wanting a serious briefing on the undoubted accomplishment on classical Freudian psychoanalysis." -Joseph Schwartz, New Humanist"This is a lucid exegesis of Freud's conception of the mind, and a satisfying demonstration of its enduring value. Freud's loudest detractors often seem simply incapable of understanding him; they will no longer have that excuse." - Mark Solms, University of Cape Town, South Africa, and International Neuro-Psychoanalysis Centre, London, UK"First rate - Lear captures the wider philosophical importance of Freud: how he makes us rethink our conceptions of ourselves as human beings, and the implications of this for morality and religion. A superb volume, and a terrific addition to the series." - John Cottingham, University of Reading, UKTable of Contents1. Interpreting the unconscious 2. Sex, Eros and life 3. This comprehensive introduction to the field of epistemology explains the concepts and theories central to understanding knowledge. Along with covering the traditional topics of the discipline in detail, Epistemology explores emerging areas of research. In a surprising yet persuasive move, Kolnai argues that disgust is never related to inorganic or non-biological matter, and that its arousal by moral objects has an underlying similarity with its arousal by organic material: a particular combination of life and death. Kolnai gives an analytic list of various kinds of disgusting objects (which should not be read just before lunch) and shows how disgust relates to the five senses.

In tracing psychology from its origins in early civilisations, ancient philosophy, and religions to the modern discipline of psychology, this book integrates overarching psychological principles and ideas that have shaped the global history of Islamic psychology. It examines the legacy of psychology from an Islamic perspective, looking at the contributions of early Islamic classical scholars and contemporary psychologists, and to introduce how the history of Islamic philosophy and sciences has contributed to the development of classical and modern Islamic psychology from its founding to the present. Clark's work influenced generations of analytical psychologists, psychoanalytic psychotherapists and trainees in England, Australia and elsewhere. His oeuvre covers important themes such as psychoanalysis as a deeply relational, mutually transformative and intersubjective endeavor; how, as wounded healers, analysts learn the art of recycling their own madness so as better to assist their patients; the clinical treatment of borderline and narcissistic disturbances and personality disorders; and psychosomatic issues as manifest and experienced in transference and countertransference relations in the analytic field. Book SynopsisTwo of the biggest design problems in Artificial Intelligenceare how to build robots that behave in line with human values and how to stop them ever going rogue. One under-explored solution to these alignment and control problems might be to examine how these are already addressed in the design of humans.Looking closely at the human blueprint, it contains a suite of capacities that are so clumsy they have generally been kept away from AI. It was assumed that robots with features like emotions and intuition, that made mistakes and looked for meaning and purpose, would not workas well as robots without this kind of code. But on considering why all these irrational properties are there, it seems that they emerge from the source code of soul. Because it is actually this junk' code that makes us human and promotes the kind of reciprocal altruism that keeps humanity alive and thriving.Robot Souls looks at developments in AI and reviews the emergence of ideas of consciTrade Review"Many people have a sense of unease about the direction in which AI is taking us. This is more than a worry about losing jobs or online content, although these are symptoms. This is a sense that something more fundamental is wrong—that the way programmers and designers understand ‘intelligence’ is itself awry. With her extraordinary ability to bridge the arts and sciences, Eve Poole not only diagnoses what is wrong, but offers an entirely novel suggestion about how to put it right. Rather than throwing up her hands in horror, Poole offers a way out of the nightmare: stop stripping out all that makes us most human—like emotions and mistakes—and put our ‘junk code’ into the programming. If it has been good enough for human survival, it is good enough for AI.Robot Souls is a brilliant book that wears its breadth of learning lightly and makes a complex subject seem simply. It is funny, readable, and important. It upends the fundamental presuppositions of AI and puts the enterprise on a new, more human, foundation."Linda Woodhead, F.D.Maurice Professor King’s College London, UK"In Robot Souls, Eve Poole advances what is a provocative—even heretical—idea: our AIs and robots not only can have souls; we need them to have souls. In developing this groundbreaking proposal, Poole not only provides a much-needed critical examination of human exceptionalism but uses this opportunity to develop an innovative conceptualization of soul as the messy but necessary “junk code” of consciousness. More than a report concerning the current and future state-of-the-art, this remarkable and thoroughly engaging book is a soul-searching meditation on the nature of the soul, the significance it has had for our own self-image as human beings, and the fact that we now are and must learn to be responsible for the souls of those artifacts that have been created in our image."David J. Gunkel, Northern Illinois University, USA"What does it mean that humans are endowed with souls? Could souls be the markers of our distinctiveness from intelligent machines, or might robots also acquire them? These questions are critical in the context of the ongoing artificial intelligence revolution, and Eve Poole's 'Robot Souls' engages them directly and skillfully at the interface between science and religion. Her 'junk code' proposal represents a bold and exciting hypothesis, making us rethink what we deem most important about being human."Marius Dorobantu, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the NetherlandsTable of Contents1. By retrieving attitudes from other times and other places, traversing the relational contours of history right up to contemporary thinkers and practitioners, the author argues that not only do relationships heal, but they offer the only safe harbour in lifeâs sea of troubles. Book SynopsisIn an impassioned defence of the importance of our own thoughts, feelings and experiences, the renowned philosopher Mary Midgley shows that there's much more to our selves than a jumble of brain cells. Exploring the remarkable gap that has opened up between our understanding of our sense of self and today's science, Midgley argues powerfully and persuasively that the rich variety of our imaginative life cannot be contained in the narrow bounds of a highly puritanical materialism that simply equates brain and self.Engaging with the work of prominent thinkers, Midgley investigates the source of our current attitudes to the self and reveals how ideas, traditions and myths have been twisted to fit in, seemingly naturally, with science's current preoccupation with the physical and material. Midgley shows that the subjective sources of thought our own experiences are every bit as necessary in helping to explain the world as the objective ones such as brain cells. Are YouTrade Review'Midgley manages in just 150 pages to say more than most scholars manage in a lifetime.' - Financial Times 'A fiercely combative philosopher … our foremost scourge of scientific pretension.' - The Guardian'She has, perhaps, the sharpest perception of any living thinker of the dangerous extremism that lurks behind so much contemporary scientistic discourse ... The Consciousness Network presents a novel account of one of the greatest scientific challenges of the twenty-first century: understanding the connection between brain and mind. The book explores remarkable cases of patients who demonstrate how our impression of reality is created by the brain. Age-old questions about dreams, colour perception, phantom sensations and hallucinations are illuminated by surprising discoveries from the latest brain research. How does consciousness differ from memory, emotions and behaviour? How did it develop during the evolution of life on earth, and does it serve a purpose? Does the brain leave room for free will? Book SynopsisThis volume presents the first major study of C.G. Jungâs curious relationship with the philosophy of Baruch Spinoza.Although Jung scarcely mentions Spinoza in his work, there is an unmistakable accord between the core ideas of both thinkers, most notably regarding Spinozaâs theory of God and the monism found in Jungâs writings. Exploring why Jung shows ambivalence toward Spinoza despite their affinity, Robert H. Langan argues that Spinoza offers Jung a radical solution to problems in his psychology. What results is a new interpretation of Jungâs metaphysics, the evidence for which has gone unheeded in Jungian studies to date. Ultimately for both Jung and Spinoza, knowledge of the self leads to knowledge of the Divine, and it is this championing of a âtranscendental immanenceâ that makes Jung an unlikely yet consummate Spinozist.Jung and Spinoza will be of interest to continental philosophers and depth psychologists who wish to bridge their respective fields, as well as general audiences curious about the ideas of both thinkers.

    Book SynopsisPsychological and psychotherapeutic orientations often neglect the notion that the individual is not one unit, but rather a coalition of affects. Providing a multi-disciplinary framework for the practice of psychotherapy and philosophy, this book explores and embraces this multiplicity within the human psyche and challenges the reader to explore and celebrate difference within society.Chapters reframe the breadth and scope of psychotherapy as an endeavour at the service of both healing and care, while also fostering bold exploration, emphasizing the risk and adventure of being alive. Through clinical studies, first-person accounts, forays into contemporary philosophy, psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, and the Arts, this book presents insights that encourage readers to be in the world with courage, compassion, and kindness, with the sense that we donât have to know who we are before becoming active citizens of the world. Bazzano then extends that exploration to the domain of public life by examining contemporary challenges related to climate change, race, gender, ethnicity, and more. This book is essential reading for therapy practitioners, and professionals of related disciplines, who want to expand their knowledge and find different ways to understand and practice their art.

While Freud thought that psychoanalysis had established a science of the mind, James maintained that the subjective could not be objectified, and psychology was left with only the crumbs of analysis. Tauberâs presentation of a conjured philosophical confrontation occasioned by their first and only meeting in 1909 uncovers the clashing philosophies of mind underlying their respective positions. Book SynopsisThis volume provides, for the first time, an almost verbatim record of Wittgenstein's lectures from the early 1930s. It forms a valuable introduction to his philosophy and will be a useful resource for scholars, undergraduate students and upper-level students of philosophy, linguistics, anthropology, logic, and the social sciences.Trade Review'The material presented in this edition is of the first importance to Wittgenstein scholarship. It helps us narrow in on early but richly developed steps in Wittgenstein's thinking on issues to do with meaning and understanding, the notion of 'grammar', rule following, notions of sense and nonsense, and the foundations of logic and mathematics … The editorial approach laid out in the rich introduction and demonstrated in the main sections of the edition seems to me to be just right, striking a balance between completeness and faithfulness, on the one hand, and readability on the other … this edition helps get us closer to hearing more fully and more directly what Wittgenstein said in his lectures from this period.' Jeff Johnson, St Catherine University, Minnesota'As we learn more about Wittgenstein's lectures, we find that he often made points in a clearer, subtler, or more elaborate fashion in his lectures than in his own writings. It is a gift to have these full lecture notes by G. E. Moore, that allow us to judge for ourselves the points Wittgenstein made as he engaged with his students over his new thoughts.' James C. Klagge, Virginia Tech'No one would have been better qualified than G. E. Moore was to take notes enabling him to draw a vivid picture helping today's readers to get a good grasp of what it was like to attend Wittgenstein's brilliant classes in the early 1930s. Stern, Rogers and Citron have done an extremely good job: readers will be indebted to them for a meticulous edition which succeeds in balancing scholarly needs and all reasonable requirements of readability. The book presenting these lecture notes constitutes an exceptional document which everyone interested in the development of Wittgenstein's mature thought will gratefully add to their shelves.' Joachim Schulte, Universität Zürich'Moore's notes on Wittgenstein's lectures from 1930 to 1933 illuminate a decisive stage in the development of Wittgenstein's thought from his early to his later philosophy. We see Wittgenstein dismantling day by day the assumptions of the Tractatus and see rising from the rubble the outlines of a fresh, new philosophizing. The volume will prove indispensable to anyone who wants to track the changes in Wittgenstein's thinking. It gains substantially from the extensive editorial and explanatory notes provided by its editors.' Hans Sluga, University of California, Berkeley'G. E. Moore's notes from Wittgenstein's 1930–1933 Cambridge lectures constitute a new and indispensable resource for students and scholars of Wittgenstein's philosophy alike. … With reference to Wittgenstein's later philosophy, one key highlight of the text under review is an Appendix containing a short paper on Wittgenstein on 'grammar', delivered to the class by Moore in February 1932. … Again, I can enthusiastically recommend the book both to students and scholars. For anyone with an interest in Wittgenstein's rich, sophisticated, and challenging philosophy, Moore's notes will prove to be a fruitful and significant, if not essential, scholarly resource.' James Connelly, Dialogue: Canadian Philosophical Review'… [This] volume is a treasure chest. Moore's notes bring Wittgenstein's genius before us by inviting us to listen to his lectures and encounter the intensity of his thought before its brilliance has been disciplined by the carefully organised dialectic one finds in his famous works. Book SynopsisAn overview is offered of Wittgenstein''s groundbreaking discussion of knowledge and certainty, especially in his final notebooks, published as On Certainty. The main interpretative readings of On Certainty are discussed, especially a non-propositional/non-epistemic interpretation and a variety of propositional and/or epistemic interpretations. Surveys are offered of the readings of On Certainty presented by such figures as Annalisa Coliva, John Greco, Danièle Moyal-Sharrock, Duncan Pritchard, Genia Schönbaumsfeld, P. F. Strawson, MichaelWilliams, and CrispinWright. This Element demonstrates how On Certainty has been especially groundbreaking for epistemology with regard to its treatment of the problem of radical scepticism.

He submits that the Phenomenology of Spirit holds not only many lessons for todayâs philosophy of language, but also a moral lesson much needed in todayâs increasingly polarized societies, in the form of a postmodern ethics of trust. In this outstanding collection, leading philosophers examine and assess A Spirit of Trust. Book SynopsisMemories, sensory experiences, expectations, and intentions, as well as thoughts, fears, and hopes: all share a fundamental trait, the fact that our conscious psychological states take place in time, and often are about time in some way or other. Temporality is an inescapable feature of the mind which has preoccupied philosophers and psychologists in diverse traditions such as Locke, Hume, Reid, Kant, Helmholtz, James, Husserl, Broad, and Bergson. The Temporal Mind: A Philosophical Introduction is the first book to offer a detailed critical survey of recent work on the perception of time and the temporal features of the mind. Philippe Chuard introduces some of the central topics in contemporary discussions of the temporal mind and the perception of time: how psychological states occur in time and convey temporal information the stream of consciousness, duration, and how short conscious experiences may be the continuity and unit

Christine Hauskeller is Professor of Moral and Political Philosophy at the University of Exeter, UK.Trade ReviewPhilosophy and Psychedelics is a fabulous book – it’s psychedelicious – a rich thoughtful collection which exceeds the samples I’ve considered here. It should be read slowly and sporadically rather than gorged, to avoid indigestion and prolong the pleasure. * Psychiatrie en Filosofie *This impressive multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary collection surveys the impacts of psychedelic research on philosophy, science and culture. Examinations of standard philosophical problems in light of psychedelic experience are complemented by studies of broader cultural and cross-cultural significance of psychedelia. Its inclusion of non-Western perspectives on psychedelics sets an important example. * Farzad Mahootian, Clinical Associate Prof., Global Liberal Studies, New York University, USA *Sacred plants and substances propitiate knowledge based on direct experience. Like a strong wind on fallen leaves, they disturbed previous orders, raise questions, propose new hypothesis, induce wondering at many levels. The authors of this timely book make an important contribution to a conversation that cannot be ignored any longer, one that has its deeper roots in the ancestral traditions of all continents, and which seems especially urgent in these times of extremes and uncertainty. * Luis Eduardo Luna, Director of the Wasiwaska Research Center, Brazil *Table of ContentsIntroduction – Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes and Christine Hauskeller(University of Exeter, UK) 1. Book SynopsisExamines Hegel''s insights regarding the complexity and significance of embodiment in human life, identity, and experience.Meaning and Embodiment provides a detailed study of Hegel''s anthropology to examine the place of corporeity or embodiment in human life, identity, and experience. In Hegel''s view, to be human means in part to produce one''s own spiritual embodiment in culture and habits. Whereas for animals nature only has meaning relative to biological drives, humans experience meaning in a way that transcends these limits, and which allows for aesthetic appreciation of beauty and sublimity, nihilistic feelings of meaninglessness, and the complex and different systems of symbolic speech and action characterizing language and culture. By elucidating the different forms of embodiment, Nicholas Mowad shows how for Hegel we are embodied in several different ways at once: as extended, subject to physical-chemical forces, living, and human. Many difficult problems in philosophy and everyday experience come down to using the right concept of embodiment. Mowad traces Hegel''s account through the growth and development of the body, gender and racial difference, cycles of sleep and waking, and sensibility and mental illness.

    Book SynopsisWhat happens in our unconscious minds when we listen to, produce or perform popular music? The Unconscious a much misunderstood concept from philosophy and psychology works through human subjects as we produce music and can be traced through the music we engage with. Through a new collaboration between music theorist and philosopher, Smith and Overy present the long history of the unconscious and its related concepts, working systematically through philosophers such as Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, psychoanalysts such as Freud and Lacan, to theorists such as Deleuze and Kristeva. The theories offered are vital to follow the psychological complexity of popular music, demonstrated through close readings of individual songs, albums, artists, genres, and popular music practices. Among countless artists, Listening to the Unconscious draws from Prince to Sufjan Stevens, from Robyn to Xiu Xiu, from Joanna Newsom to Arcade Fire, from PJ Harvey to LCD Sound System, each of Trade ReviewExploring how conscious and unconscious states of mind are channeled through musical expression, Kenneth Smith and Stephen Overy collaborate here to offer post-Freudian and post-Lacanian readings of popular songs. With clear reference to psychoanalytic concepts, their analytic applications reveal remarkable ways in which states of being emerge through expressive musical strategies. Listening to the Unconscious will reward readers with persuasive and stimulating reflections on how music channels the very core of human experience. * Lori Burns, Professor of Music, University of Ottawa, Canada *Three particular values strike me in reading Smith and Overy's Listening to the Unconscious. First, they provide an entry-level, cogent introduction to key psychoanalytic concepts and the ways they enable navigation of the unconscious, but with a musical purpose in mind. Second, they give much all-too-rare attention to musical detail in the light of these concepts, leading to persuasive elucidations of a wide range of songs at rather greater depth than often found. And, third, they present sufficient richness of demonstration to enable interested readers to apply these ideas to music of their own choosing, and thus to understand music more convincingly from this useful perspective. What more could one want? * Allan Moore, Professor Emeritus, University of Surrey, UK *Listening to the Unconscious provides a compelling approach to music listening. It is an invaluable addition to the field of popular music studies, demonstrating deftly the relevance of psychoanalysis in music scholarship. Comprising an extensive collection of musical examples, Smith and Overy have developed an impressive array of theories that lay the foundations for important forms of critical thinking. * Stan Hawkins, Professor Emeritus, University of Oslo and University of Agder, Norway *Kenneth Smith and Stephen Overy present a unique approach to the analysis of popular music that links conventional music theoretic and Freudian/Lacanian psychoanalytic concepts providing the analyst a window into the unconscious drives shaping popular music. * Ciro Scotto, Associate Professor of Music Theory, Ohio University, USA *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Book SynopsisThe philosophical significance of Maurice Blanchot's writings has rarely been in doubt. Specifying the nature and implications of his thinking has proved much less easy, particularly in reference to the key figure of G. W. F. Hegel. Examination reveals that Blanchot's thinking is persistently oriented towards a questioning of the terms of Hegel's thought, while nevertheless remaining within its themes, whichshows how rigorously he studied Hegel's works but also how radical his critique of them became. Equally, it allows for a crucial discussion of the differences between Blanchot's responses to Hegel and those of Jacques Derrida, with the implicit suggestion that in some ways Blanchot's critique of Hegel is more far-reaching than that developed by Derrida. William S. Allen demonstrates those aspects of Hegelian thought that permeate Blanchot's writings and, in turn, develops a detailed three-way analysis of Derrida, Hegel, and Blanchot. The key question around which this analysis deveTrade Review[Allen’s] work offers a forceful corrective to the simplifications or even outright parodies of Hegel one sometimes finds in work on Blanchot and many of his fellow-travellers in twentieth-century French literary philosophy ... Allen’s book is unlikely to be surpassed as a philosophically robust and clearsighted guide to the entretien infini between Hegel and Blanchot, philosophy and literature, and negation and negativity. * Hegel Bulletin *How does one approach a written work that problematizes the regulative ideal of a legible book? This question is associated with Derrida’s deconstruction of Hegel. As William S. Allen demonstrates in this fascinating study, it was posed in a unique way by Blanchot, whose own engagements with Hegel invite us to rethink the relation between the terms différance and aufheben. * Andrew Cutrofello, Professor of Philosophy, Loyola University Chicago, USA *Illegibility: Blanchot and Hegel applies near-exhaustive knowledge, and laser-like insights, to develop a reading of Hegel through Blanchot, with judicious reference to other thinkers such as Derrida. Hegel stands as a figure for a type of double, even dialectical reflection, in which Blanchot found inspiration even as he challenged and rewrote the Enlightenment philosopher's thinking. Allen’s profound and sustained analysis, based on careful attention to texts, represents what the humanities is best able to do, and he proceeds by means of a nonetheless rigorous scientificity that should be the gold standard for researchers in any field. * David Wills, Professor of French Studies and Director of Graduate Studies, Brown University, USA *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Abbreviations Introduction: Marks of Experience 1. Book Synopsis‘Combining neurology, philosophy, computer science and artificial intelligence. . . a fascinating and illuminating account’ - The GuardianUnderstanding the human mind and how it relates to the world of experience has challenged scientists and philosophers for centuries. How do we even begin to think about ‘minds’ that are not human? That is the question explored in this ground-breaking book. In The Book of Minds, Award-winning science writer Philip Ball argues that in order to understand our own minds and imagine those of others, we need to move on from considering the human mind as a standard against which all others should be measured.Science has begun to have something to say about the properties of mind; the more we learn about the minds of other creatures, from octopuses to chimpanzees, to imagine the potential minds of computers and alien intelligences, the more we can begin to see our own, and the more we can understand the diversity of the human mind, in the widest of contexts. By understanding how minds differ, we can also best understand our own.

    Book SynopsisWHAT EXACTLY ARE HALLUCINATIONS? ARE THEY ACTUALLY DOORS TO ANOTHER REALITY? Anthony Peake thinks so. In this stunning new book Peake takes the work of Aldous Huxley and updates it using the latest information from such seemingly unrelated fields as quantum mechanics, neurochemistry and consciousness studies. This work follows on from Peake's groundbreaking books The Out-of-Body Experience and The Infinite Mindfield.Trade Review“This book not only opens the doors to perception, its careful attention to scholarship and exceptional intellectual clarity throws them wide open.” —Whitley Strieber, author of Communion and co-author of Super Natural “Anthony Peake’s fascinating book explores the underlying nature of consciousness as it is revealed through various syndromes and disorders. The book combines scientific evidence with philosophical inquiry in an elegant way, posing deep questions about what we experience as reality. A great read!” —Daniel Pinchbeck, author of How Soon is Now? and Breaking Open the Head “In this deeply insightful book, Peake discusses the neurological, neurochemical, physiological and psychological correlations between pathological conditions and anomalous states of consciousness that are often associated with these conditions. Peake draws attention to commonalities between some of these conditions in regards to how they are linked on the spectrum of consciousness and highlights that a renewed perspective on consciousness could remove the seemingly ‘paranormal’ labels given to anomalous states. More importantly, it gives us a deeper understanding of pathological conditions such as epilepsy, migraine and schizophrenia and provides us with insight into how to develop potential therapeutic strategies for those who live with these conditions.” —Dr Penny Sartori, author of The Wisdom of Near-Death Experiences “Anthony Peake is engaged in one of the most important strands of ontological inquiry of modern times, unravelling the Gordian Knot that is the mystery of our existence. Boldly researched, patiently detailed and with clearly explained examples of ‘experience anomalies’, this book underpins his non-mystical model of immortality, showing how our bi-cameral brains might interface with the universal Pleroma.” —Bob Rickard, founder and editor of Fortean Times
