Book SynopsisDecades of war, social upheaval and political change have not lessened the enduring interest of the people of East Timor (Timor-Leste) in their oral traditions, something they share with their neighbors in the eastern islands of Indonesia. Although oral literature continues to occupy a central place in Timorese cultures, new forms of expression are emerging (for instance via published fiction and in social media). Nonetheless, the corpus of Timorese oral narrative largely retains an underlying metaphysical unity. Among others, it continues to express indigenous notions about gender and precedence - two important sociocultural markers that are among the most prominent topics currently under discussion by scholars of the region today. What has yet to be done, however, is to bring Timorese oral narratives into mainstream social science scholarship by subjecting them to a rigorous scholarly analysis. That is the purpose of this masterly study by the veteran Timor scholar, David Hicks. Drawing upon more than a half century of fieldwork and publishing, he discusses the tropes found in and illuminating Timorese metaphysical thought and literature. No other work has discussed these tropes before nor indeed attempted to discern patterns of thought in Timorese narratives. Certainly, the study will be of interest to scholars of literature, social science, structural analysis, Indonesian cultures and philosophy, as well as to those interested in the country's colonial past and in efforts to conserve its natural environment. The book should also appeal to educated citizens of Timor-Leste; here is a work illuminating how future aspirations might be grounded in a common heritage.

Book SynopsisThe question of 'the end of metaphysics' is generally considered as a central issue concerning the nature and significance of A"philosophy as suchA", and, accordingly, as belonging to the realm of 'pure' or 'fundamental' philosophy. By contrast, this book investigates to what extent the end of metaphysics might be related to specific influences from outside philosophy. Focusing on the period between 1830 and 1848, it argues that metaphysics was not so much challenged by internal philosophical argument, but rather by a transformation of Western culture in its entirety. Metaphysics was overtaken by the modern spirit of the age. In consequence, this book approaches 'the end of metaphysics' as a problem of the philosophy of culture. Three historians of culture provide an overview and analysis of the 'Age of Revolution' by focusing upon the political revolution in France, the industrial revolution in England and the intellectual revolution in Germany respectively. The proclamations of the end of metaphysics by Auguste Comte, Friedrich Engels and Otto Friedrich Gruppe are shown to mirror this threefold cultural transformation. Against this backdrop, the A"ideaA" of the end of metaphysics is brought into relief as a A"historical realityA" during the years 1830 to 1848. The editors are members of the A"Centre for Metaphysics and CultureA" at the University of Antwerp.

Book SynopsisLa question de savoir quel type de rapport entretiennent la physique et la métaphysique est au cœur du système philosophique d’Aristote. Ce rapport, toutefois, n’est pas facile à saisir, non seulement parce qu’Aristote ne l’a jamais défini de façon claire, mais parce qu’il est délicat d’en comprendre la nature à la lumière de la théorie de la science exposée dans les Seconds Analytiques. En effet, Aristote affirme d’une part que la métaphysique, conçue comme science universelle, n’a pas de genre-sujet propre, et d’autre part que la physique, quoique seconde par rapport à la métaphysique, en assure le fondement. C’est de ce rapport ambivalent que découle le plus grand nombre d’apories liées au statut épistémologique de chacune des deux sciences comme à la nature de leur rapport. Les contributions réunies dans ce recueil s’inscrivent dans ce contexte théorique complexe. Elles portent moins sur la difficulté de comprendre le critère ou les critères d’organisation des traités qu’on appelle Métaphysique et Physique que sur celle de présenter et de justifier l’entrelacement épistémologique de ces deux sciences, conçues comme deux disciplines unitaires mais plurielles. Sans prétendre reconstruire l’histoire de la question, l’un des enjeux de ce volume fut aussi de dégager, passé le texte même d’Aristote, certains points nodaux de l’histoire grecque et arabe du débat.
