  • Cambridge University Press Expressivism Pragmatism and Representationalism

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisPragmatists have traditionally been enemies of representationalism but friends of naturalism, when naturalism is understood to pertain to human subjects, in the sense of Hume and Nietzsche. In this volume Huw Price presents his distinctive version of this traditional combination, as delivered in his Renà Descartes Lectures at Tilburg University in 2008. Price contrasts his view with other contemporary forms of philosophical naturalism, comparing it with other pragmatist and neo-pragmatist views such as those of Robert Brandom and Simon Blackburn. Linking their different 'expressivist' programmes, Price argues for a radical global expressivism that combines key elements from both. With Paul Horwich and Michael Williams, Brandom and Blackburn respond to Price in new essays. Price replies in the closing essay, emphasising links between his views and those of Wilfrid Sellars. The volume will be of great interest to advanced students of philosophy of language and metaphysics.Trade Review'A fascinating set of lectures, commentaries, and replies. I have learned much from the arguments that Huw Price and the commentators advance.' Allan Gibbard, University of Michigan'Price's book is a refreshing and commendable addition to recent work on representationalism. His arguments are novel and forceful.' Book SynopsisWittgenstein's Metaphysics offers an interpretation of the fundamental ideas of Ludwig Wittgenstein. It takes issue with the conventional view that after 1930 Wittgenstein rejected the philosophy of the Tractatus and developed a wholly new conception of philosophy.Trade Review"This lucidly written book is single-mindedly devoted to exhibiting Wittgenstein's work as continuous development within traditional metaphysics....A special merit of the book is the presentation, in the Introduction, of these argued for, and the so-called myths which Cook argues against." • Cambridge University Press Malebranche Dialogues Metaphysics Dialogues on Metaphysics and on Religion Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisMalebranche's Dialogues on Metaphysics and on Religion is in many ways the best introduction to his thought, and provides the most systematic exposition of his philosophy as a whole. In it, he presents clear and comprehensive statements of his two best-known contributions to metaphysics and epistemology, namely, the doctrines of occasionalism and vision in God; he also states his views on such central issues as self-knowledge, the existence of the external world and the problem of theodicy. His skilful handling of the dialogue form enables the reader to see how he responds to objections made to his earlier work The Search after Truth. This edition presents a translation of the text which is clear, readable and more accurate than any of its predecessors, together with an introduction that analyses Malebranche's central teachings and explains the importance of the Dialogues in the context of seventeenth-century philosophy.Trade Review"For those wishing to learn more about [Malebrance] thought, this volume is the place to start." Donald Rutherford, Religious Studies ReviewTable of ContentsAcknowledgments; List of abbreviations; Introduction; Chronology; Further reading; Note on the text; Dialogues on Metaphysics and on Religion; Dialogues 1–14; Index.
