Book SynopsisThis book analyses the concept of disease, as defined in the context of evolutionary medicine. Upon introducing the reader to evolutionary medicine in its current form and describing its approach to disease instances, the book leverages thoughts and instruments of knowledge of epistemology, social sciences, and ethics to answer the question: “How can we build a timely and appropriate concept of disease?” At first, it looks at the social concerns of medicalization, for example focusing on the suffering of people who have not been diagnosed, or whose suffering is not caused by certain elements that falls under the definitions of disease. In turn, it merges different, both conceptual and empirical considerations in one comprehensive analysis, with the aim of fostering a multidisciplinary understanding of the phenomenon of disease. This book also highlights certain kinds of epistemic injustices that are taking place in the healthcare system, as this is currently conceived in post-industrial societies, thus offering a timely contribution to the current debate around social justice in healthcare.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Finding Value in Concepts.- Meaning as Definition and Meaning as Use.- Locating the Conceptual Change in Scientific Research.- The Concept of Disease in the Traditional Debates.- Evolution and Evolutionary Medicine in Disease.- New Developments in Evolutionary Theory and Evolutionary Medicine, New Frontiers for Evolutionary Medicine.- Conclusion.

  • De Gruyter Immanuel Kant und die Öffentlichkeit der Vernunft

    15 in stock

  • De Gruyter On Meaning in Life

    15 in stock

The question of meaning in life is as relevant and central as ever - in spite of all attempts at declaring it senseless. It does not disappear. But how should we deal with this question today? The collection presents a wide range of approaches, discussing subjectivist and objectivist answers, confronting concepts of meaning with notions of happiness and morality, and considering the idea of human life's meaning both sub specie aeternitatis and in view of the world's finitude and contingency. The volume assembles contributions from leading scholars in the field, including John Cottingham, John Kekes, Iddo Landau, Dag T. Andersson, Robert B. Louden, Christoph Horn, and Bernard Reginster.

  • De Gruyter Principles of Truth

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisOn the one hand, the concept of truth is a major research subject in analytic philosophy. On the other hand, mathematical logicians have developed sophisticated logical theories of truth and the paradoxes. Recent developments in logical theories of the semantical paradoxes are highly relevant for philosophical research on the notion of truth. And conversely, philosophical guidance is necessary for the development of logical theories of truth and the paradoxes. From this perspective, this volume intends to reflect and promote deeper interaction and collaboration between philosophers and logicians investigating the concept of truth than has existed so far.Aside from an extended introductory overview of recent work in the theory of truth, the volume consists of articles by leading philosophers and logicians on subjects and debates that are situated on the interface between logical and philosophical theories of truth. The volume is intended for graduate students in philosophy and in logic who want an introduction to contemporary research in this area, as well as for professional philosophers and logicians

  • De Gruyter Kant’s Deduction From Apperception: An Essay on the Transcendental Deduction of the Categories

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn focusing on the systematic deduction of the categories from a principle, Schulting takes up anew the controversial project of the eminent German Kant scholar Klaus Reich, whose monograph “The Completeness of Kant's Table of Judgments” made the case that the logical functions of judgement can all be derived from the objective unity of apperception and can be shown to link up with one another systematically. Common opinion among Kantians today has it that Kant did not mean to derive the functions of judgement, and accordingly the categories, from the principle of apperception. Schulting challenges this standard view and aims to resuscitate the main motivation behind Reich’s project. He argues, in agreement with Reich’s main thesis about the derivability of the functions of judgement, that Kant indeed does mean to derive, in full a priori fashion, the categories from the principle of apperception. Schulting also shows that, given the general assumptions of the Critical philosophy, Kant's derivation is successful and that absent an account of the derivation of the categories from apperception, the B-Deduction cannot really be understood. Table of Contents

Table of ContentsRelevanz der objektiv-hermeneutischen Analyse des Bekennerschreibens.- Forschungsstand über Rechtsextremismus und Radikalismus.- Objektive Hermeneutik als Interpretationsmethode.- Formstruktur und Analyse des Bekennerschreibens.-Diskussion der zentralen Studienbefunde.- Fazit und Ausblick.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisBeing Known is a response to a philosophical challenge which arises for every area of thought. The challenge is one of reconciling our conception of truth in an area with the means by which we think we come to know truth about that area. Meeting the challenge may require a revision of our conception of truth in that area; or a revision of our theory of knowledge for that area; or a revision in our conception of the relations between the two. Christopher Peacocke presents a framework for addressing the challenge, a framework which links both the theory of knowledge and the theory of truth with the theory of concept-possession. It formulates a set of constraints and a general form of solution for a wide range of topics. He goes on to propose specific solutions within this general form for a series of classically problematic subjects: the past; metaphysical necessity; the intentional contents of our own mental states; the self; and freedom of the will. Being Known will interest anyone conTrade Reviewimpressively crafted forays into metaphysics, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of logic. • Clarendon Press Aristotle on Perception Clarendon Aristotle Series

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisStephen Everson presents a comprehensive new study of Aristotle''s account of perception and related mental capacities. Recent debate about Aristotle''s theory of mind has focused on this account, which is Aristotle''s most sustained and detailed attempt to describe and explain the behaviour of living things. Everson places it in the context of Aristotle''s natural science as a whole, showing how he applies the explanatory tools developed in other works to the study of perceptual cognition. Everson demonstrates that, contrary to the claims of many recent scholars, Aristotle is indeed concerned to explain perceptual activity as the activity of a living body, in terms of material changes in the organs which possess the various perceptual capacities. By emphasizing the unified nature of the perceptual system, Everson is able to explain how Aristotle accounts for our ability to perceive not only such things as colours and sounds but material objects in our environment. This rich and broad-ranging book will be essential reading not only for students of Aristotle''s theory of mind but for all those concerned to understand the explanatory principles of his natural science. ''No part of Aristotle''s psychological theory has been of greater interest to scholars over the past few years than his account of perception. . . . this excellent book . . . will appeal to Aristotelian scholars and philosophers of mind alike . . . Everson manifests a thorough understanding of much of the literature on Aristotle''s psychological theory and displays a talent for offering sophisticated arguments that are informed by the conceptual possibilities demarcated in both ancient and modern philosophy . . . Everson has presented a rich and insightful critique of a thesis which has had significant impact upon contemporary discussions of Aristotle''s psychological theory. Further, in offering ths critique, he has avoided many of the snares and entanglements to which others have fallen prey.'' John E. Sisko, Oxford Studies in Ancient PhilosophyTrade ReviewHis treatment of perception as one case of Aristotle's general explanation of natural change, including mental changes, is a very fruitful one. * Richard Wallace, Greece and Rome *although it is a tough read, it is rich and rewarding. * Robin Waterfield, Heythrop Journal *E's discussion is philosophically refined: and his reader is expected to have a nodding acquantaince with various notions in contemporary philosophical psychology ... The book is good enough to deserve detailed criticism. Indeed, I am not sure that I have read a better book on Aristotle's psychology. I enjoyed it, and I learned from it. It is rare that such things can be said about a book on ancient philosophy. * Jonathan Barnes, The Classical Review *Spiritualists and materialists alike will learn from reading this book. * Allan Siverman, Ancient Philosophy 19, 1999 *Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION; 1. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisA central motif of R. G. Collingwood''s philosophy of history is the idea that historical understanding requires a re-enactment of past experience. However, there have been sharp disagreements about the acceptability of this idea, and even its meaning. This book aims to advance the critical discussion in three ways: by analysing the idea itself further, concentrating especially on the contrast which Collingwood drew between it and scientific understanding; by exploring the limits of its applicability to what historians ordinarily consider their proper subject-matter; and by clarifying the relationship between it and some other key Collingwoodian ideas, such as the place of imagination in historical inquiry, the sense in which history deals with the individual, the essential perspectivity of historical judgement, and the importance of narrative and periodization in historical thinking. Professor Dray defends Collingwood against a good deal of recent criticism, while pointing to ways in Trade ReviewDray is a very careful writer, and his analysis of Collingwood's philosophy of history is unparalleled in its scope and in its balance. Dray is also a very clear writer, and the book is well organized ... this is a fine study, perhaps the single best account of the pertinent ideas of this century's most eminent philosopher of history. * Rex Martin, American Historical Review *It is something of an event then, to have his new work, the culmination of a lifetime of thought, appear in his retirement. As one would expect, it is a deeply considered book, lucidly written, and scrupulously fair to all parties. ... a sound and serious philosophical commentary, and anyone interested in either Collingwood or the philosophy of history should consider joining the dialogue and will learn much in the process. * Canadian Journal of History, April 1997 *Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisPaul Horwich, one of the world''s most distinguished philosophers, develops in this book his highly original deflationary conception of language. His main aim in Reflections on Meaning is to explain how mere noises, marks, gestures, and mental symbols are able to capture the world - that is, how words and sentences (in whatever medium) come to mean what they do, to stand for certain things, to be true or false of reality. His answer is an innovative development of Wittgenstein''s idea that the meaning of a term is nothing more than its use.Trade ReviewThis lucid, closely argued, and stimulating book offers Horwich's latest formulation and defence of his Use Theory of Meaning . . . there is a great deal of interesting and nuanced argument on almost every page of this thought-provoking book, including detailed responses to important semantic theorists such as Chomsky, Davidson, Dummett, Fodor, Grice, Kripke, Putnam, and Quine. For anyone interested in the prospects for a use-based theory of meaning, or a naturalistic reduction of semantics, or who wants a clear sense of current issues at the cutting-edge of philosophy of language, Horwich's book is required reading. * David Macarthur, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews *Table of ContentsPreface ; 1. • Oxford University Press, USA Humes Enlightenment Tract The Unity and Purpose of an Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisHume''s Enlightenment Tract is the first full book-length study for forty years of David Hume''s Enquiry concerning Human Understanding. The Enquiry has, contrary to its author''s expressed wishes, long lived in the shadow of its predecessor, A Treatise of Human Nature. Stephen Buckle presents the Enquiry in a fresh light, and aims to raise it to its rightful position in Hume''s work and in the history of philosophy. He argues that the Enquiry is not, as so often assumed, a mere collection of watered-down extracts from the earlier work. It is, rather, a coherent work with a unified argument; and, when this argument is grasped as a whole, the Enquiry shows itself to be the best introduction to the lineaments of its author''s general philosophy. Buckle offers a careful guide through the argument and structure of the work. He shows how the central sections of the Enquiry offer a critique of the dogmatic empiricisms of the ancient world (Stoicism, Epicureanism, and Aristotelianism), and set in place an alternative conception of human powers based on the sceptical principles of habit and probability. These principles are then put to work, to rule out philosophy''s metaphysical ambitions and their consequences: religious systems and their attendant conception of human beings as semi-divine rational animals. Hume''s scepticism, experimentalism, and naturalism are thus shown to be different aspects of the one unified philosophy - a sceptical version of the Enlightenment vision.Trade ReviewReview from previous edition Hume's Enlightenment Tract is a masterpiece in the history of philosophy. Buckle is not only fully in command of the text he is studying, but of the context both ancient and modern. He also brings into his discussions some of the best scholarship of recent years in early modern philosophy. The book is written in a provocative and stimulating way and, whether one agrees or disagrees with its main contentions, one is sure to come away from reading it highly motivated to go back to Hume's own book and reconsider it in the light of Hume's widest philosophical concerns. * John P. Wright, Australasian Journal of Philosophy *Buckle's work is undoubtedly an important addition to the recent growth in scholarly writing on the Enquiry ... the only single-author work to offer both a critical overview of the Enquiry, a systematic general interpretation, and a section-by-section commentary on its contents... He succeeds in the important task of establishing the Enquiry as an independently significant philosophical work, central to the interpretation of Hume's thinking as a whole, and his book should help ensure that the work remains at the forefront of the new critical thinking about Hume's epistemology. * Paul Stanistreet, Journal of Scottish Philosophy *Table of Contents1.
