John Wiley and Sons Ltd A Companion to Hume

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisComprised of twenty-nine newly commissioned essays, A Companion to Hume examines the depth of the philosophies and influence of the legacies attributed to one of history's most remarkable thinkers.Trade Review"This is a superb collection of essays by both established Hume scholars and newer names in Hume studies . . . such books do this job very well and this one on Hume especially so: the reader is fortunate to have as guides, Louis Loeb on induction, Rachel Cohon on the passions, and Terence Penelhum on religion, to pick, as examples, just three of the excellent range of authors". (Metapsychology Online Reviews, 2011) "Blackwell's fortieth Companion to Philosophy is a splendid and long-overdue Companion to Hume, expertly pulled together by Elizabeth Radcliffe, a former editor of the journal Hume Studies. Although the Blackwell Companions are promoted as a student reference series, this particular volume is clearly of considerable value to serious scholars as well." (Religion in the Age of Enlightenment, December 2010)"One distinctive feature of this Blackwell Companion to Hume is that it attempts to be more careful than is common with books of its sort to mark a distinction between explicating Hume's own ideas and arguments, and assessing their relevance to present-day philosophical discussion." (Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews, February 2009) "[The book is] highly approachable, well-organized, and—in a field where a lot is published—a distinctive addition. A book for academic and specialist libraries almost exclusively." (Reference Reviews, Issue 7 2008) "The essays are of uniformly high quality, and many are written by well-established, respected philosophers.... David Hume is widely recognized as one of the most important and influential figures in modern philosophy. Every library should have a copy of this valuable resource, which will appeal to anyone interested in Hume's philosophy. Highly recommended." The book is mostly descriptive rather than evaluative. Dr. Mittleman does seem particularly concerned to show the value of Jewish ethics to those operating from mainstream secular philosophical schools of thought. Book SynopsisThis book explains how the brain interacts with the social worldand why stories matter. How do our brains enable us to tell and follow stories? And how do stories affect our minds? In Stories and the Brain, Paul B. Armstrong analyzes the cognitive processes involved in constructing and exchanging stories, exploring their role in the neurobiology of mental functioning. Armstrong argues that the ways in which stories order events in time, imitate actions, and relate our experiences to others' lives are correlated to cortical processes of temporal binding, the circuit between action and perception, and the mirroring operations underlying embodied intersubjectivity. He reveals how recent neuroscientific findings about how the brain workshow it assembles neuronal syntheses without a central controllerilluminate cognitive processes involving time, action, and self-other relations that are central to narrative. An extension of his previous book, How Literature Plays with the Brain, this nTrade ReviewStories and the Brain is a well-researched, engaging discussion on what narrative theory and neuroscience stand to gain from continued collaboration.—CerebrumTable of ContentsAcknowledgmentsPrologueChapter 1. Book SynopsisA brilliant philosopher reimagines Stoicism for our modern age in this thought-provoking guide to a better life. For more than two thousand years, Stoicism has offered a message of resilience in the face of hardship. Little wonder, then, that it is having such a revival in our own troubled times. But there is no denying how weird it can be: Is it really the case that we shouldn''t care about our work, our loved ones, or our own lives? According to the old Stoics, yes.In A Field Guide to a Happy Life, philosopher Massimo Pigliucci offers a renewed Stoicism that reflects modern science and sensibilities. Pigliucci embraces the joyful bonds of affection, the satisfactions of a job well done, and the grief that attends loss. In his hands, Stoicism isn''t about feats of indifference, but about enduring pain without being overwhelmed, while enjoying pleasures without losing our heads. In short, he makes Stoicism into a philosophy all of us -- whether committed Stoics or simply seekers -- can use to live better.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisPhilosopher-logican, Gottlob Frege's (1848-1924) work has recieved much attention. In his goal to solidify the foundations of mathematics and scientific work, Frege concieved a comprehensive philosophy of language and developed the main thesis of logicism, that mathematics is reducible to logic. This volume contains essays covering a range of issues related to Frege and his work. It discusses topics either in a Fregean spirit or in a dialogue with Frege's original views. Key papers concern the ontological status of propositions and concepts, attempts to improve on the semantics of singular terms, the question of how to construe the content of concept-expressions and other themes within the common ground in which ontology and philosophical semantics intersect.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe eight essays in Fire in the Dark frame and probe Pascal's underlying contention that the darkling, "hidden" God of Christian revelation, though Himself a profound mystery, especially in the matter of his justice towardsfallen mankind, can nonetheless be used to demystify questions that matter most to us. Pascal's Pensées afford a deeply penetrating view of the human condition [or predicament] as a prelude to a luminously reasoned defense of the Christian faith. His Provincial Letters are best remembered as a wickedly funny satire of "obliging and accommodating" Jesuit moral theologians who, guided by policy rather than piety, are willing to put virtue and salvation within the easy reach of all but the diabolical. Both works are landmarks ofFrench prose that have fascinated readers of all sorts from his day to ours. The eight essays in Fire in the Dark, two of which are new and four of which first appeared in French, frame and probe Pascal's underlying contention that the darkling, "hidden" God of Christian revelation, though Himself a profound mystery, especially in the matter of his justice towards fallen mankind, can nonetheless be used to demystify questions that matter most to us. But can the Supremely Obscure, like a dark lantern that is supremely dark, really illumine our whence, whither, and what now -- our nature, destiny and duties? "Watchman, what of the night?" The answers Pascal offers to Isaiah's query, whether they finally shed light on our world's chiaroscuro or not, can at least claim the authority of coming from out of the dark. Charles Natoli is a member of the Department of Philosophy and Classical Studies at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York. He is also the author of Nietzsche and Pascal on Christianity [1985].Trade ReviewPerfectly at home in the literary, theological, and philosophical fields that inform seventeenth-century France, Charles Natoli discusses Pascal's difficult and fascinating writings with great clarity and insight, and with the justesse these writings deserve. The essays are witty and enjoyable to read. Original in their discussion of Pascal's methods and of their potential limits, these essays too ask the reader to be mindful of Pascal's depth and value for our 21st century world. -- -- John A. Gallucci, Colgate University. In this careful and learned study, Natoli burrows into a key tension of our time: the mystery of faith and how one proves the grounds for that faith. -- -- Sara Melzer, UCLA, author of Discourses of the Fall: A Study of Pascal's PenséesIn this remarkable analysis of Pascal's theodicy and the difficulties it presents to modern readers, Natoli joins theological, philosophical, and literary approaches to the Pensées and Provincial Letters. -- -- David Wetsel, Arizona State University, author of Pascal and Disbelief .The seriousness with which Charles Natoli poses, investigates, and most probably lives the question of the justice of the hidden and judging God makes this book at once at excellent example of scholarship and of philosophy. . . • St Augustine's Press Ancients and the Moderns – Rethinking Modernity

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn this insightful and controversial book, Rosen takes a new look at the famous "quarrel" that the moderns have with the ancients, analyzing and comparing ancient philosophers and modern Continental and analytical thinkers from Plato, Descartes, and Kant to Fichte, Nietzsche, and Rorty. He urges that we not dismiss the classical heritage but appropriate it, for this appropriation is an indispensable step in the process of legitimizing our historical experience. According to Rosen, the quarrel that is significant is not between ancients and moderns but between philosophy and sophistry, for the continuous attempt of Western civilization to prevent playfulness from degenerating into frivolity constitutes the unity of historical experience. The contemporary crisis of modernity as expressed by catchwords such as post-modernism, antiplatonism, postphilosophy, and deconstruction, could lead to a disintegration of this historical unity. But it also presents an opportunity for rejuvenation, provided that we are capable of the fidelity to the past that is the necessary condition for a future.Trade Review"A remarkable new, ground-breaking look at teh Battle of the Books... Rosen's inightful, closely reasoned study is an important contribution to the ongoing debate on the classics in the core carriculum." - Meyer Reinhold, 'Classical World' "The book is important, the time for its reception is ripe, and it will make a significant difference in the way we view philosophy over the coming decades." - Kenly Dove, SUNY, PurchaseTable of Contentspreface, notes, index

  • St Augustine's Press Briefly Considered – From the Manstream: Notes

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe “mainstream” as the term is employed here finds it headwaters in antiquity, if not in the pre-Socratics, certainly in Plato and Aristotle. Through the centuries, that philosophy has been utilized and developed by the Stoics, the Neo-Platonists, the Scholastics, the Arabs, and by the Early Moderns. Dougherty approaches his topics from the perspective of the mainstream, specifically from the vantage point represented in contemporary discourse by the realism of Plato, Aristotle, and Aquinas. In commenting on contemporary social and political issues, Dougherty provides a critique of the humbug that often passes as philosophy. Much of what is published as philosophy, he claims, has little to do with the pursuit of wisdom, and much is written without any knowledge of the history of philosophy – for example, a professor of moral philosophy, by his own admission, lecturing without any knowledge of the Stoics, and another professor at a prominent university, in a nationally televised series of lectures devoted to the history of philosophy, jumping from Plato to Descartes with nothing in between. Dougherty argues that the ancients, no less intelligent or observant than we, have much to say to us about nature, human nature, and the polity. It is from the vantage point of what he takes to be perennial philosophy that Dougherty discusses topics such as “The Acquisition and Use of Power,” “Property as a Condition of Liberty,” “Tolerance.” “Responsibility,” and “The Nature of Scientific Explanation.” Briefly Considered is divided into three parts. Part One presents a series of essays on contemporary social and political issues. Part Two surveys some recent works in the history and philosophy of science, and Part Three provides an introduction to Islamic scholarship that will aid those seeking an understanding of the origins and history of that movement.

To do so he examines the writings of three great modern thinkers - Sigmund Freud, Martin Heidegger, and Soren Kierkegaard - and proposes a new reading of their work in light of his own understanding of New Testament teachings. Carrere elucidates the paradoxical spiritual truth that salvation lies not in an escape from humanity, but in embracing it. An interdisciplinary tour de force, this book will appeal to anyone interested in philosophy, psychology, religion, or cultural anthropology.Trade Review"This timely and insightful work provides a cogent diagnosis of our spiritual predicament and makes an urgent plea for the only kind of remedy that might help us to live well as contingent beings." - Rick A. • When Colorblindness Isn't the Answer: Humanism

Pitchstone Publishing When Colorblindness Isn't the Answer: Humanism

Book SynopsisThe future of the United States rests in many ways on how the ongoing challenge of racial injustice in the country is addressed. Yet, humanists remain divided over what if any agenda should guide humanist thought and action toward questions of race. In this volume, Anthony B. Pinn makes a clear case for why humanism should embrace racial justice as part of its commitment to the well-being of life in general and human flourishing in particular. As a first step, humanists should stop asking why so many racial minorities remain committed to religious traditions that have destroyed lives, perverted justice, and justified racial discrimination. Rather, Pinn argues, humanists must first confront a more pertinent and pressing question: why has humanism failed to provide a more compelling alternative to theism for so many minority groups? For only with a bit of humility and perspective—and a recognition of the various ways in which we each contribute to racial injustice—can we truly fight for justice.Trade Review"A must read for this moment in history!" Sharon D. Welch, Provost and Professor, Religion and Society, Meadville Lombard Theological School" When Colorblindness Isn't the Answer is a practical guide for understanding and actively working against white supremacy, racism, and their offspring called 'race.' While directed toward humanists, everyone can benefit from this immensely readable and practice-oriented analysis . . . . This book is a guide for the perplexed and fearful. It provides practical tools for antiracist action." William David Hart, professor, Religious Studies; holder of Margaret W. Harmon Chair, Macalaster College

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn her Letters on Natural Philosophy, published originally in Krakow in 1584, Camilla Erculiani proposed her new theory of the natural causes of the universal flood in the biblical book of Genesis. Erculiani weaves together her understanding of Aristotelian, Platonic, Galenic, and astrological traditions and combines them with her own observations of the world as seen from her apothecary shop in sixteenth-century Padua. This publication brought Erculiani to the attention of the Inquisition, which accused her of heresy, silencing her for centuries. This edition presents the first full English translation of Erculiani’s book and other relevant texts, bringing to light the cultural context and scientific thought of this unique natural philosopher.Trade Review“This edition and translation of the Letters on Natural Philosophy of the sixteenth-century pharmacist Camilla Erculiani makes an important contribution to the history of science, Italian literary history, and the study of early modern women and gender. The critical introduction discusses Erculiani’s biography and the world of the apothecary, while the contextualization of the ideas Erculiani engages with and challenges demonstrates the editor’s deep grasp of the texts that follow. Those texts include not only Erculiani’s letters, but also letters of the Venetian thinker Sebastiano Erizzo, which help make the case for Erculiani’s real correspondence with other philosophers, and the Consilium of jurist Giacomo Menochio, which highlights the precariousness of the intellectual territory into which Erculiani wandered.” -- Meredith Ray, University of DelawareTable of ContentsAcknowledgments Illustrations Foreword: Aristotle in the Pharmacy: The Ambitions of Camilla Erculiani in Sixteenth-Century Padua, by Paula Findlen Introduction: Camilla Erculiani, a Woman and a Natural Philosopher, by Eleonora Carinci, translated by Hannah Marcus Note on the Translation, by Hannah Marcus Camilla Erculiani, Letters on Natural Philosophy, translated by Hannah Marcus To Philosophers To the Most Serene Queen Anna, Queen of Poland, Grand Duchess of Lithuania, etc. To Readers By Andreas Schonaeus of Glogów, A Song of Praise To the Most Excellent Signor Georges Guarnier, in which is discussed the natural cause of the Flood and the natural temperament of man Letter from the Most Excellent Signor Georges Guarnier to Signora Camilla Herculiana, in which is discussed the denial of the Flood Letter from Camilla Herculiana to the most excellent Signor Georges Guarnier, in which is discussed the truth of the Flood and the natural formation and appearance of the rainbow To the magnificent and most excellent Signor Knight, the Signor Martin of Berzeviczy, Transylvanian Chancellor of the holy majesty of the invincible King Stephen of Poland Sebastiano Erizzo, Letters to Camilla Erculiani, translated by Hannah Marcus Giacomo Menochio, Consilium 766: In Defense of Camilla Erculiani, translated by Hannah Marcus Bibliography Index
