Book SynopsisReworking existing clothing adds up, reducing the cost for both the wearer and the planet. Many wardrobes are full of unworn impulse purchases and expensive mistakes: clothes that dont fit well or with details that dont flatter. For those concerned about the cost of fashion shoppingnot just personal debt, but the ethical issues of cheap labour and the ecological impact of over-consumption of fashion clothingFiguring Out Fashion provides answers. Fashion stylist Jay Hunt links fashion theory to financial planning to show how a healthy bank balance and a stylish wardrobe can co-exist. Theory sections explain the basic calculations you need to master: how to assess and review your current wardrobe, working out what suits you; how to plan a capsule wardrobe for the seasons and your budget; how to understand concepts like cost per wear, and judging when quality counts. Theory is supplemented with practical instruction from ethical craft guru Barley Massey in reworking, reviving, and reTrade ReviewThe subtitle of this book is “balance your wardrobe and your budget,” and this describes what it is about in a nutshell. If you want to avoid overspending and ending up with a closet full of outdated unflattering garments, then this book might have the answers. After the introduction, it is divided up into three sections: theory, practical and revisions. Learn what staples every wardrobe needs and what you can do without. Think about your favorite brands and use the internet to find out where to buy them. Making both local stores and the internet work for you is a thread running throughout this book. Theory topics include decluttering, finding out the looks that are flattering to your figure type, shopping through the year, choosing accessories and hairstyles, sensible vacation packing etc. The practical section is filled with ways of updating old fashioned garments, altering, dyeing or totally changing existing items, and even making clothing out of things like duvets or uniform workwear. Obviously some sewing knowledge is essential for this section, but the projects are mostly fairly basic and are illustrated with simple and colorful diagrams. The revision section is short and mostly about looking after clothes, such as washing tips, how to put items away for later, and all about the clothes moth. At the back is a section of websites in the UK and US so you can find out how to get sale clothing, obtain vouchers, look for discount villages of shops and read blogs. I like the workbook approach to all this; it is relatively easy to get on with most of these tasks straightaway, and it certainly got me thinking about my own closets and shopping habits. There is also a lot about being green and responsible; very much a book for today. * myshelf.com *July 2016 Is your wardrobe full of unworn impulse purchases and expensive mistakes, clothes that don't fit well or with details that don't flatter? Chicago Review Press Financial Intimacy

Book SynopsisThere is a commonly held perception that we don’t talk about money. Actually, we talk about it all the time—we are just having the wrong conversation. The result: finances fracture and even destroy many relationships. In this timely book, money expert Jacquette M. Timmons addresses the financial issues that couples face, examining how family background, personal choices, and socioeconomic and cultural influences affect the way women merge love and money. Encouraging women first to explore their own relationship with money, she provides a framework for an honest exchange of information so partners can understand each other’s personal financial stories, the many emotions money elicits in them, and their financial preferences, prejudices, and tolerance levels. In these uncertain economic times, more and more couples are learning the hard way that a lack of financial intimacy can sabotage even the best relationships. Timmons gives women the tools they need to take the lead in the financial dialogue so they can live wealthy and well with their partner—in good times and bad.Trade Review"Women learn best by sharing stories . . . the more honest, the better. That's why Jacquette Timmons's down-to-earth empathy and advice will demystify finance and make a real difference. This book will help women save relationships as well as money!" --Mary Lou Quinlan, CEO, Just Ask a Woman, and author, What She's Not Telling You , Why Women Hide the Whole Truth , and What Marketers Can Do About It"This book is filled with interesting insights and pieces of wisdom and it is well worth the reader's time to better understand the roles that money can play in the financial intimacy of couples." --Dr. Howard P. Tuckman, dean of the Graduate School of Business, dean of the Business Faculty, and George Jean Chair of Business, Fordham University"How do couples manage to mix their money with the honey of intimacy? The divorce rate suggests that many don't. This book goes beyond financial literacy to promote financial intimacy and the possibility of financial synergy in relationships." --Julianne Malveaux, economist and president, Bennett College for Women"There are all kinds of books on marriage and relationships, but I've never seen one that so brilliantly deals with creating healthy financial intimacy for couples." --Barbara Stanny, author, Prince Charming Isn't Coming" Financial Intimacy goes beyond telling couples how to manage their debt and invest for the future; it shows couples how to make those conversations routine and painless--as they should be." --Beverly Goodman, senior editor, Smart Money Magazine

Penguin Putnam Inc The One-Page Financial Plan: A Simple Way to Be

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisWhenever I tell people about my job as a financial advisor, the conversation inevitably turns to how hopeless they feel when it comes to dealing with money. More than once, they’ve begged, “Just tell me what to do.”It’s no surprise that even my most successful friends feel confused or paralyzed. Even if they have a shelfful of personal finance books, they don’t have time to make sense of all the information available. They don’t just want good advice, they want the best advice—so rather than do the “wrong thing,” they do nothing. Their 401(k) and bank statements pile up, unexamined or maybe even unopened. What they don’t realize is that bad calls about money aren’t failures; they’re just what happens when emotional creatures have to make decisions about the future with limited information. What I tell them is that we need to scrap striving for perfection and instead commit to a process of guessing and making adjustments when things go off track. Of course we’re going to make the best guesses we can—but we’re not going to obsess over getting them exactly right. The fact is, in a single page you can prioritize what you really want in life and figure out how to get there. That’s because a great financial plan has nothing to do with what the markets are doing, what your real estate agent is pitching, or the hot stock your brother-in-law told you about. It has everything to do with what’s most important to you. By now you may be wondering, “What about the details? How much do I need to invest each year, and how do I allocate it? How much life insurance do I need?” Don’t worry: I’ll cover those topics and many more, sharing strategies that will take the complexity out of them. The most important thing is getting clarity about the big picture so you can cope with the unexpected. Maybe you’ll lose the job you thought was secure; you’ll take a financial risk that doesn’t pan out; you’ll have twins when you were only budgeting for one. In other words: Life will happen. But no matter what happens, this book will help you bridge the gap between where you are now and where you want to go.
