Book SynopsisThis is a survey of religious and political developments in Latin American Christianity, especially in the rapidly growing Pentecostal churches and in Catholicism. Pentecostalism and Catholicism have many shared concerns, and a coalition between their leaders could have an impact on public policy.Trade Review“...a slim and focused volume that draws together an enormous body of data from across the entire region under three general headings: the dynamic of Pentecostal growth and Catholic ‘retrenchment’, explanations and implications of Protestant growth; and an assessment of contemporary Catholicism.” —Latin American Studies“Smith’s book ... consists of four insightful essays.... His broad-brushed treatment serves as much as anything as a useful bibliographical review of research on Latin American Pentecostalism and Catholicism since Vatican II.” —PNEUMA“Brian Smith’s Religious Politics in Latin America: Pentecostal vs. Catholic exemplifies best the legacy of preoccupation with religion’s impact on larger political (particularly democratic possibilities in the region).” —Latin American Research Review“...a compact yet very competent summary and critical evaluation of recent literature on religion, society, and politics in the region, highlighting competing explanations of Protestant growth and Catholic retrenchment. The book is highly recommended for undergraduate and graduate students seeking a solid introduction to the subject.” —Religious Studies Review“In this volume Brian Smith attempts an overview of a tremendous amount of reflection on the two largest Christian communities in the vast continent of Latin America. Recognizing the complexity of these two communities, the author sees that sharply defined scenarios for them are inadequate. He does see both as having important contributions to make in strengthening democratic values without achieving a broad alliance.” —Missiology: An International Review“An excellent introduction to one of the most important but understudied aspects of contemporary Latin American life.” —Foreign Affairs“Smith’s deft and judicious study covers a remarkable breadth of recent research on this topic.” —Christian Century“A compact yet very competent summary and critical evaluation of recent literature on religion, society, and politics in Latin America, highlighting competing explanations of Protestant growth and Catholic retrenchment. This book is highly recommended for undergraduate and graduate students seeking a solid introduction to the subject.” —Religious Studies Review

Book SynopsisThe Congo Evangelistic Mission (CEM) was one of the most successful classical Pentecostal missions in Africa. Maxwell examines the roles of CEM missionaries and their African collaborators in producing knowledge about Africa, illustrating the nature of discourses of identity in colonial Africa and how the Luba shaped missionary research.Trade Review“An original and lucid contribution to the study of missionary Christianity in colonial Africa, Religious Entanglements compellingly demonstrates the influence of missionary forms of knowledge on Africanist anthropology, history, art history, and philosophy. Through nuanced, historical, and context-specific research, it also furthers our understanding of the emergence of African ethnicities and African Christianity. With eloquent and precise prose, Maxwell makes a stunning contribution. This is one of the most compelling accounts of mission Christianity and African society in colonial Africa in over two decades.”—David Gordon, Bowdoin College “An enlightening study of Pentecostal missionary activities in Central Africa from the late 19th to mid-20thcentury. . . Brimming with nuance and acute historical detail, this makes clear that the Luba reception of such missionaries as Burton was an active process of fusion and exchange.”—Publishers Weekly “Religious Entanglements makes a major contribution to both African studies and the history of missions, thanks to its multiple perspectives, its concern with both contexts and comparisons, its interdisciplinary approach (from anthropology to photography), and its careful distinctions between different group responses to the mission. A most impressive study.”—Peter Burke, Emeritus Professor of Cultural History, University of Cambridge “A brilliant, capacious, field-defining book. Maxwell not only rewrites the history of evangelical Christianity in Central Africa; he also rethinks the nature and meaning of colonialism itself, illuminating the complex ‘entanglements’ through which Europeans and Africans co-created their worlds.”—James Campbell, Stanford UniversityTable of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments List of Abbreviations Introduction 1 Primitivism and Pragmatism in the Making of the Congo Evangelistic Mission 2 Luba Transformations Prior to 1910 3 Continuity and Change in the Luba Christian Movement 4 Missions and the State: The Challenge of Pentecostalism 5 “Acquainting Oneself with the Enemy”: Making Knowledge about Africa 6 Pathways to Knowledge 7 The Creation of Lubaland: Missionary Science and Christian Literacy in the Making of the Luba Katanga 8 Finding God among the Luba: Missionary Conversions and Epiphanies Postscript: Postcolonial Developments Conclusion: Pentecostalism, Knowledge Creation, and Religious Change Notes Sources and Bibliography Index

Book SynopsisDrawing on two years of ethnographic research, this book explores Pentecostal Christianity in the kind of community where it often flourishes: a densely populated neighborhood in the heart of an extraction economy. It highlights this religion's role in making life possible in structurally adjusted Africa.Trade Review"Naomi Haynes provides a compelling ethnographic study of the centrality of Pentecostal Christianity in contemporary Zambia... Haynes’ attention to certain socially productive elements of Pentecostalism allows her to dig deep into her ethnographic material and to detail what animates the everyday, interpersonal relationships at the core of Pentecostal Christian communities on the Zambian Copperbelt." * AllegraLab *"It is a testament to the strengths of this book that it generates such questions, that it opens these and other avenues for further research. Breaking new ground in the study of religious life and social change, Moving by the Spirit should be read by all Africanists whose research and teaching engage such themes." * African Studies Review *"Haynes’s book is a page-turner and a table-turner – gracefully written and gently dissentient toward some existing ideas on contemporary African Pentecostalism. . . . Scholars of Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity and anthropologists of Christianity are in debt to Naomi Haynes for supplying her readers with such an empirically rich and theoretically nuanced portrait of contemporary Zambian neo-Pentecostals." * PentecoStudies *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments Note on Bemba Orthography and Pseudonyms Prologue: A Breakthrough for Mr. Zulu Introduction: Pentecostalism as Promise, Pentecostalism as Problem 1. • Addicted to Christ

University of California Press Addicted to Christ

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHow are spiritual power and self-transformation cultivated in street ministries? In Addicted to Christ, Helena Hansen provides an in-depth analysis of Pentecostal ministries in Puerto Rico that were foundedand run by self-identified ex-addicts, ministries that are also widespread in poor Black and Latino neighborhoods in the U.S. mainland. Richly ethnographic, the book harmoniously melds Hansen's dual expertise in cultural anthropology and psychiatry. Through the stories of ministry converts, she examines key elements ofPentecostalism: mysticism, ascetic practice, and the idea of other-worldliness. She then reconstructs the ministries' strategies ofspiritual victory over addiction: transformation techniques to build spiritual strength and authority through pain and discipline; cultivation of alternative masculinities based on male converts' reclamation of domestic space; and radical rupture from a post-industrial culture of disposability. By contrasting the ministries' logic of addiction with that of biomedicine, Hansen rethinks roads to recovery, discovering unexpected convergences with biomedicine while revealing the allure of street corner ministries.Trade Review“Readers from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines will find much to glean from Hansen’s text, particularly scholars in the areas of psychiatry, religious studies, and biomedicine.” * Reading Religion, American Academy of Religion *"A phenomenal work." * Pneuma *"Hansen’s Addicted to Christ is a phenomenal work that traverses several vital areas of reflection." * Brill *“Powerful and beautifully written.” * Political and Legal Anthropology Review *Table of ContentsPreface ix Acknowledgments xvii Introduction 1 1. • Struggle for the Spirit

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Struggle for the Spirit

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFor 500 years Catholicism has been the dominant religious force throughout Latin America. Its hegemony was based on a complex relationship with popular culture; the colorful and the macabre, the syncretic and the purist, the indigenous and the cosmopolitan, the popular and the erudite have combined to form a uniquely creative and reflexive cultural complex. But in the second half of the twentieth century, just as the Church sought to reform itself by proclaiming its preferential option for the poor, some of the most charismatic forms of Protestantism, carried along by an open and aggressive hostility to the traditions of popular culture, began to establish themselves at the heart of the popular sectors themselves - in the large urban slums, among Indian groups and, increasingly, throughout other strata of Latin American societies. Today around a fifth of the population of countries like Brazil and Chile Protestant, mostly Pentecostal. Is this a new Reformation? A cultural revolutionTrade Review"Struggle for the Spirit comes to grips with two antagonistic contemporary modes of thought and action, Christian fundamentalism and basismo, through the broad sweep of history, as contemporary worldwide movements, and within the temples and chapels of the city of Salvador, Brazil. This very well written and good-humoured book should be read not only by those interested in religion, since as all good sociology it suggests relationships and connections with society as a whole. It will provoke heated debate both among Latin Americanists and among those concerned with understanding fundamentalism and basismo as global phenomena." Peter Fry, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro "Lehmann's accounts of basismo and Pentecostalism are instructive and based on ... well chosen subjects." European Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies "Religion and its multiple intersections with society and politics are being belatedly recognized as enormously important in the contemporary world. David Lehmann was doing distinguished work on this matter well before this recognition. Now he offers us, in this volume, another fascinating study that distillates his long immersion on this topic as well as his extremely close knowledge of Brazil and other Latin American countries." Guillermo O'Donnell, University of Notre Dame "David Lehmann's Struggle for the Spirit is a rich and insightful addition to the literature both on radical modern Catholicism and on radical primitive Pentecostalism in Latin America." David Martin, Times Literary Supplement "Lehmann's book is a subtle and welcome examination of the extraordinary recent growth of Pentecostalism in Brazil and Latin America. The book is based on field research ... and draws, as well, on an array of rich secondary sources." Choice "The style is flowing and reads like a travel story; a well-informed account, always on the look-out and guided by interrogations framed in theoretically pertinent questions. He opens up a large field of research as yet unexplored and fascinating." Latin American Studies "Lucidly written, based on an impressive breadth of reading, long experience of Latin America and recent, original fieldwork in Brazil ... Latin Americanists will find much to stimulate them in this book ... An enjoyable and easily digested book [which] shall have a significant impact within and beyond Latin American studies." Book SynopsisHow can we explain the difference between the 'miraculous' Christianity expressed in the Gospels and the nearly miracle-free Christianity of Paul? In this historically informed study, senior New Testament scholar Graham Twelftree challenges the view that Paul was primarily a thinker and reimagines him as an apostle of Jesus for whom the miraculous was of profound importance. Book SynopsisPentecostalismAfrica's fastest growing form of Christianityis known for displacing that which came before. Yet anthropologist Devaka Premawardhana witnessed neither massive growth nor dramatic rupture in the part of Mozambique where he worked. His research opens a new paradigm for the study of global Christianity, one centered on religious fluidity and existential mobility, and on how indigenous traditions remain vibrant and influentialeven in the lives of converts. In Faith in Flux, Premawardhana narrates a range of everyday hardships faced by a rural Makhuwa-speaking peoplesnakebites and elephant invasions, chronic illnesses and recurring wars, disputes within families and conflicts with the stateto explore how wellbeing sometimes entails not stability but mobility. In their ambivalent response to Pentecostalism, as in their historical resistance to sedentarization and other modernizing projects, the Makhuwa reveal crucial insights about what it is to be human: about cTrade Review"This fascinating and unique book is the result of Devaka Premawardhana'sjourney of nearly one year to explore the local response to the recent arrivalof Pentecostal churches in northern Mozambique . . . [A] rich and inspiring book, which should be read by anyone interested in African Studies and anthropology of Christianity." * African Studies Review *"Who would have thought that a book set in the middle of what is considered a quite remote location even in Mozambique-the Makhuwa area of Niassa Province-could so eloquently address important concerns relating to Pentecostalism and the enigma of change in Africa, in anthropology, and more generally? This gem of a book executes such a challenging task in highly original ways . . . [B]eautifully and compellingly written . . . Premawardhana has written a book that should-and will-have a broad impact." * Journal of Religion in Africa *"Literatures tied to themes of migration, refugees, religious conversion, and phenomenology are all brought to bear expertly. Analysis of the fluidity of rural Mozambicans' relationship to Pentecostal churches and teachings is enriched with sparing application of well-chosen theories. The author accomplishes this with nuance, and utmost respect for the human experiences that command his attention." * International Journal of African Historical Studies *"Beautifully and brilliantly written . . . an existential ethnography of the Makhuwa people of Northern Mozambique, a meditation on colonialism, globalization, modernity and the nature of Pentecostalism, a critique of cultural theory, and a fascinating narrative of 'snakebites and elephant invasions, chronic illnesses and recurring wars, disputes within families and conflicts with the state.'" * Nova Religio *"This book, no doubt, adds new, unique, and refreshing insight to the ever-growing research and publications on Pentecostalism. Not only does it examine Pentecostalism in a place where it had not been studied extensively, it does so by means of time-tested anthropological methods and theoretical frameworks. This unique approach and the vivid and enthralling narrative style make this book a must-read." * Journal of World Christianity *""Faith in Flux reminds us how intensive fieldwork and rich ethnography are not only what define anthropology but also what anthropologists draw on to challenge theoretical assumptions and make their voices heard in scholarly debates . . . Faith in Flux should be recommended not only to scholars of Christianity and Africanists but also to undergraduate and graduate students of anthropology."" * Anthropological Quarterly *"Premawardhana's book is a pleasure to read, as he seamlessly weaves the theoretical discussion into his intriguing vignettes. He discusses his own presence and reception with the people among whom he lived in a way that established credible ethnographic authority. Whether the reader is interested in constructions of conversion, Christianity and cultural adaptation, or the impact of transnational Pentecostalism in local communities, Premawardhana's work provides a valuable and detailed case study." * Pneuma *"Faith in Flux brilliantly realizes the potential of ethnography not only to illuminate other lifeworlds but to offer incisive critiques of current theoretical assumptions in religious studies and the social sciences. In lucid and enthralling prose, Devaka Premawardhana takes us deep into the world of the Makhuwa, offering new ways in which global Christianity, tradition, mobility, conversion, and social change may be understood." * Michael Jackson, author of How Lifeworlds Work: Emotionality, Sociality, and the Ambiguity of Being *"Faith in Flux is a beautifully written and theoretically novel book that focuses on a geographical area that has been severely neglected in the anthropological record. Devaka Premawardhana amply illustrates the idea that radical renewal is neither foreign to traditional societies nor necessarily a byproduct of globalization, modernization, or Pentecostal conversion." * Ilana van Wyk, University of Cape Town *"Intersecting the study of Pentecostalism, modernity, and globalization with insights from existential anthropology, especially bodily dispositions toward mobility, Faith in Flux is a book that will no doubt lead anthropologists of Christianity to view their own work in a new light. Devaka Premawardhana challenges scholars to rethink the idea of religious conversion as a profound rupture with the past." * Sonia Silva, Skidmore College *Table of ContentsIntroduction PART I. This book, then, is necessary reading for scholars interested in social scientific approaches to religion in general and Christian clergy studies in particular." -- Margarita Simon Guillory * American Journal of Sociology *"A beautifully written and profoundly sensitive exploration of the meaning of ministry as labor and calling. It stands not only as a highly original empirical treatment of the Church of God in Christ, but as an important theoretical statement in the sociologies of religion and professions.Divine Callings will be read and discussed for many years to come." -- Omar McRoberts,University of Chicago"In an educational credentialing world, Richard Pitt takes us deep into an alternative reality—clergy by calling and anointing. Book SynopsisIn 1906, William J Seymour (1870-1922) preached Pentecostal revival at the Azusa Street mission in Los Angeles. This book provides an insight into the life and ministry of Seymour, the Azusa Street revival, and Seymour's influence on global Pentecostal origins.Trade Review“The author convincingly portrays Seymour, an African American with little formal education, at the vital center of Pentecostalism, influencing scores of ministers and missionaries who passed through his mission or read his Apostolic Faith newspaper. . . . Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through researchers/faculty.” -- W. B. Bedford * Choice *“Readers deeply steeped in the historiographical fights over the relative influence of Seymour versus other figures will find here about as close to a definitive account as one is going to get. But even those who just want to learn about Pentecostalism’s early days generally, and perhaps don’t have a dog in the historiographical and in-church fight, will benefit greatly from the author’s strongly argued, impeccably researched, and cogently written account. This is church history at its best.” -- Paul Harvey * Canadian Journal of History *"Espinosa’s detailed and careful analysis of Seymour’s role in the internal and external dynamics of the early Pentecostal movement explains much about its crucial decisions, and the contemporary strengths and weaknesses of this branch of Christianity." -- Hans Krabbendam * History *“Espinosa provides an appropriate challenge to evaluate the radical countercultural, socially transgressive nature of Azusa and the opportunity that such transgressive space gave to an emerging Pentecostalism.” -- Zachary Michael Tackett * Pneuma *Table of ContentsForeword xiii Preface xix Acknowledgments xxi Timeline xxiii Introduction. Book SynopsisPentecostal serpent handlers, also known as Signs Followers, hold a literal interpretation of a verse in the New Testament’s Gospel of Markwhich states that, among other abilities, true believers shall be able to “take up serpents.” For more than a century members of this uniquely Appalachian religious tradition have handled venomous snakes during their worship services, risking death as evidence of their unwavering faith. Despite scores of deaths from snakebite and the closure of numerous churches in recent decades, there remains a small contingent of serpent handlers devoted to keeping the practice alive. Who are the serpent handlers? What motivates them to continue their potentially lethal practices through the generations? Documentary photographer Lauren Pond traveled to West Virginia in search of answers to these questions. There she met Pastor Randy “Mack” Wolford, one of the best-known Signs Following preachers in the region, and spTrade Review"Visually stunning.... Pond is deeply aware of the ethical quandaries of photographing a person while he is dying, which she writes about in a theologically provocative afterword. Her photographic eye is more compassionate than voyeuristic, and she captures something of the essence of Wolford’s faith even while hesitating to pin it down." * Christianity Today *"Open the book, and whether you are of faith or not, see what Pond came to see: people of faith, enduring to an end we all face. See sign followers seeking only to be obedient to their God. See people believing, loving and caring, backsliding and returning to be baptized again. And yes, dying. See people so human in their failings and need for re-baptism that a common saying among believers (however baptized) is that even the fish know who they are. Pond’s magnificent book will introduce them to you." -- Ralph W. Hood, Jr. * Reading Religion *"To move through this book is to feel the author unwind herself. We feel her taking the measure of the space in which her subjects live. Services that were once photographed as delirious frenzy are now shown as infused with calm, though no less ecstatic. We get a sense that Pond has arrived somewhere very different than where she sought to go when she began, and it also feels like the beginning of a larger story." -- Leo Hsu * Fraction Magazine *"Capturing the true essence of this type of religious phenomenon is delicate. One must balance scene with sensitivity. Pond's work in Test of Faith is a well-blanced blend of both qualities. . . . She invites viewers, through her photography and dialogue, to embark on a journey to understand more deeply the people who take on these acts of faith and who choose to live within a particular lifestyle." -- Chelsie Dubay * Journal of Appalachian Studies *Table of ContentsForeword / Peter Barberie Photographs and Text / Lauren Pond Afterword / Lauren Pond Acknowledgments About the Prize

This growth overwhelmingly takes place outside of the West, and women make up 75 percent of the membership. The contributors to Spirit on the Move examine Pentecostalism''s appeal to black women worldwide and the ways it provides them with a source of community and access to power. Exploring a range of topics, from Neo-Pentecostal churches in Ghana that help women challenge gender norms to evangelical gospel musicians in Brazil, the contributors show how Pentecostalism helps black women draw attention to and seek remediation from the violence and injustices brought on by civil war, capitalist exploitation, racism, and the failures of the state. Baker Publishing Group Renewing Christian Worldview – A Holistic

Book SynopsisThis brief but comprehensive introduction to Christian worldview helps readers understand the Christian faith as the substance of Spirit-filled living and as a knowledge tradition stemming from the global Pentecostal movement. Using beauty, truth, and goodness as organizing principles, the authors delineate a Christian worldview by tracing each category historically, comparing and contrasting each with alternative Christian expressions, and constructing fresh takes on each as read through the lived Pentecostal experience. Unlike other worldview books, the authors' approach emphasizes beauty (relating to experience) rather than truth (involving knowledge acquisition); that difference in emphasis flows naturally from the Pentecostal perspective, which has traditionally centered the experience of the Spirit. Pentecostal Christians will find this volume indispensable for thinking lucidly about their worldview from a renewal perspective.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Seeking Renewal amid Competing WorldviewsPart 1: Renewing Beauty1. With a focus on Holy Spirit power, early adherents stirred an enthusiastic response, first at a Bible school in Topeka and then in a small mission on Asuza Street in Los Angeles. Almost immediately, the movement spread to Houston, Chicago, and then northeastern urban centers. By the early 1910s the fervor had reached most parts of the United States, Canada, and northern Mexico, and eventually the converts called themselves pentecostals. Today there are pentecostals all over the world. From the beginning the movement was unusually diverse: women and African Americans were active in many of the early fellowships, and although some groups were segregated, some were interracial. Everytwhere, ordinary people passionately devoted themselves to salvation, Holy Ghost baptism evidenced by speaking in tongues, divine healing, and anticipation of the Lord's imminent return. This movement saw itself as leaderless, depending on individual conversion and a radical equality of souls — or, as early devotees would say, on the Holy Spirit. But a closer look reveals a host of forceful, clear-eyed leaders. This volume offers twenty biographical portraits of the first-generation pioneers who wove the different strands of Holy Spirit revivalism into a coherent and dramatically successful movement.Trade ReviewThis book fills signficant gaps in the historical account of the early leaders of the Pentecostal movement. The solidy researched and well-written essays serve not only as portraits of the movement's early leaders, but also as a set of windows through which readers can look from different angles at one of the most important and dynamic developments in the religious world during the twentieth century." —;William C. Martin, author of With God on Our Side: The Rise of the Religious Right in America"This book will fill a great void. . . . What is impressive is the range of subjects: the balance between men and women, between whites and non-whites, and between areas of geographical work." —Charles H. Lippy, author of Pluralism Comes of Age: American Religious Culture in the Twentieth Century

Book SynopsisIn The Full Gospel in Zion, Alan J. Clark explores the dynamic history of Pentecostalism in Utah. Although the story of Pentecostalism now spans the entire globe, there is no previous study of its growth and development among the mountains and valleys of the Beehive State. This book recovers and reveals the identities of the earliest Pentecostal pioneers across the state and places the founding churches within the historical narrative of Utah religion in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Utah Pentecostals encountered a unique religious community in which to evangelize, and it presented them with unanticipated difficulties. Pentecostals were forced to interact with members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to an intimate and constant degree, owing to their large religious majority in the region. Pentecostal/Latter-day Saint interactions revealed surprising similarities in belief and unexpected obstacles in evangelism, as Latter-day Saints did not respond as other Christians did to the Pentecostal message, pushing Pentecostals to develop new approaches to establishing churches and congregations in Utah. Clark uses newspaper archives, local congregational histories, and dozens of interviews to tell the story of Utah Pentecostals presents a new and fascinating exploratione of Utah’s rich religious history during the twentieth century.Trade Review “Clark provides us with a fascinating look at Pentecostalism within the unique culture of Latter-day Saints. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to understand not only the histories and varieties of Pentecostalisms in Utah, but also their relationship to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."—Cecil M. Robeck Jr., coeditor of The Cambridge Companion to Pentecostalism “By capturing the context of Mormon/Pentecostal interactions in Utah since the early twentieth century, Clark offers a much-needed boost and corrective. This kind of comparative religious history promises to open doors to fill that void."—James Goff, Appalachian State UniversityTable of Contents Acknowledgments Introduction 1. Book SynopsisExamines Pentecostal conversion as a force of change, revealing new insights into its dominant role in global Christianity today. There has been an extraordinary growth in Pentecostalism in Africa, with Brazilian Pentecostals establishing new transnational Christian connections, initiating widespread changes not only in religious practice but in society. This book describes its rise in Maputo, capital of Mozambique, and the sometimes dramatic impact of Pentecostalism on women. Here large numbers of urban women are taking advantage of the opportunities Pentecostalism offers to overcome restrictions at home, pioneer new life spaces and change their lives through the power of the Holy Spirit. Yet, conversion can also mean a violent rupturing with tradition, with family and with social networks. As the pastors encourage women to cut their ties with the past, including ancestral spirits, they come to see their kin and husbands as imbued with evil powers, and many leave their families. Conquering spheres that used to be forbidden to them, they often live alone as unmarried women, sometimes earning more than men of a similar age. They are also expected to donate huge sums to the churches, often money that they can ill afford, bringing new hardships. Linda van de Kamp is Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.Trade ReviewVan de Kamp's book provides a valuable insight into the multifaceted nature of religion, economics, and social relations in Mozambique. . . . [H]er text is not only an indispensable resource for scholars studying religion in Africa, but also for those researching global Christianity and Pentecostalism. * READING RELIGION *One always stands to gain from studies that foreground the often overlooked lives of women and, moreover, women in the often overlooked Lusophone world. Violent Conversion deserves to be read by all interested in global Pentecostalism, religion and gender, religion and globalization, African studies, and Brazilian studies. * PENTECO STUDIES *A vital contribution to discussions about Pentecostalism and the anthropology of Christianity, kinship and gender roles under neoliberalism, and urban studies in Mozambique. * AMERICAN ETHNOLOGIST *Violent Conversions is, without doubt, mandatory reading for scholars of Christianity . [it] highlights the urgency of researching 'religion' as a domain [that is a] central part of social life. The author shows how Pentecostalism is an agent - and not the result - of globalization. * MANÁ *This publication provides valuable knowledge on the possible consequences of south-south Pentecostal mission. * SOCIAL SCIENCES & MISSION *Table of ContentsIntroduction Gender, Family and Social Transformations in Maputo Transnational Spaces of Conquest Moving Frontiers: the Generational Trajectories of Pentecostal Women Converting the Spirit Spouse Terapia do amor: Confrontational Public Love 'Holy Bonfires' and Campaigns Conclusion: Violent Conversion Bibliography
