Baker Publishing Group Introduction to Theology – Declaring the Wonders
Book SynopsisThis systematic theology textbook introduces students to the complexity and beauty of theology as a pursuit of the global church today. It views theology as an ongoing conversation with many voices about the wonders of God that is faithful to Scripture but is also attentive to the wisdom of tradition and the relevance of context. The book first summarizes the nature and necessity of theological thinking and discusses theological method. Chapters then unfold in creedal order through the various regions of Christian teaching, with units on revelation, God, creation and providence, Christology, pneumatology, ecclesiology, anthropology, soteriology, and eschatology. This book is part of a new series that reflects the changing face of global Christianity. Series volumes are written by leading Pentecostal/Charismatic scholars who highlight themes of interest to Pentecostal/Charismatic students; however, the books are respectful, appreciative, and inclusive of a variety of church families and traditions. Baker Publishing Group Charismatic Christianity – Introducing Its
Book SynopsisWhat is the essence of charismatic Christianity, a renewal movement that stresses the Holy Spirit's work, the church's use of spiritual gifts, and the significance of the supernatural? Helen Collins gives a novel summary explanation drawn from the spiritual gifts. Through Scripture and doctrinal reflection, she shows that charismatic spirituality is a coherent, reasonable, and rich tradition with much to offer. Collins demonstrates how practicing spiritual gifts embodies a distinctive theology, making these practices carriers of doctrine. Using the Acts 2 narrative, she summarizes seven key emphases and associated practices: expectancy (prophecy), enchantment (miracles), encounter (healing), expression (testimony), equality (tongues), empowerment (evangelism), and enjoyment (worship). The result is a fresh introduction that is biblical, theologically robust, and practical, helping charismatic students to learn more about themselves and others to understand the movement and what it has to contribute to global theological discussions.Table of ContentsIntroductionA TestimonyThe Aims of This BookDefinitionsMethodOverview1. Baker Publishing Group Renewing Christian Worldview – A Holistic
Book SynopsisThis brief but comprehensive introduction to Christian worldview helps readers understand the Christian faith as the substance of Spirit-filled living and as a knowledge tradition stemming from the global Pentecostal movement. Using beauty, truth, and goodness as organizing principles, the authors delineate a Christian worldview by tracing each category historically, comparing and contrasting each with alternative Christian expressions, and constructing fresh takes on each as read through the lived Pentecostal experience. Unlike other worldview books, the authors' approach emphasizes beauty (relating to experience) rather than truth (involving knowledge acquisition); that difference in emphasis flows naturally from the Pentecostal perspective, which has traditionally centered the experience of the Spirit. Pentecostal Christians will find this volume indispensable for thinking lucidly about their worldview from a renewal perspective.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Seeking Renewal amid Competing WorldviewsPart 1: Renewing Beauty1. University of Arkansas Press Portraits of a Generation: Early Pentecostal
Book SynopsisA spirit of religious revival blazed across the United States just after 1900. With a focus on Holy Spirit power, early adherents stirred an enthusiastic response, first at a Bible school in Topeka and then in a small mission on Asuza Street in Los Angeles. Almost immediately, the movement spread to Houston, Chicago, and then northeastern urban centers. By the early 1910s the fervor had reached most parts of the United States, Canada, and northern Mexico, and eventually the converts called themselves pentecostals. Today there are pentecostals all over the world. From the beginning the movement was unusually diverse: women and African Americans were active in many of the early fellowships, and although some groups were segregated, some were interracial. Everytwhere, ordinary people passionately devoted themselves to salvation, Holy Ghost baptism evidenced by speaking in tongues, divine healing, and anticipation of the Lord's imminent return. This movement saw itself as leaderless, depending on individual conversion and a radical equality of souls — or, as early devotees would say, on the Holy Spirit. But a closer look reveals a host of forceful, clear-eyed leaders. This volume offers twenty biographical portraits of the first-generation pioneers who wove the different strands of Holy Spirit revivalism into a coherent and dramatically successful movement.Trade ReviewThis book fills signficant gaps in the historical account of the early leaders of the Pentecostal movement. The solidy researched and well-written essays serve not only as portraits of the movement's early leaders, but also as a set of windows through which readers can look from different angles at one of the most important and dynamic developments in the religious world during the twentieth century." —;William C. Martin, author of With God on Our Side: The Rise of the Religious Right in America"This book will fill a great void. . . . What is impressive is the range of subjects: the balance between men and women, between whites and non-whites, and between areas of geographical work." —Charles H. Lippy, author of Pluralism Comes of Age: American Religious Culture in the Twentieth Century

University of Utah Press,U.S. The Full Gospel in Zion: A History of
Book SynopsisIn The Full Gospel in Zion, Alan J. Clark explores the dynamic history of Pentecostalism in Utah. Although the story of Pentecostalism now spans the entire globe, there is no previous study of its growth and development among the mountains and valleys of the Beehive State. This book recovers and reveals the identities of the earliest Pentecostal pioneers across the state and places the founding churches within the historical narrative of Utah religion in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Utah Pentecostals encountered a unique religious community in which to evangelize, and it presented them with unanticipated difficulties. Pentecostals were forced to interact with members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to an intimate and constant degree, owing to their large religious majority in the region. Pentecostal/Latter-day Saint interactions revealed surprising similarities in belief and unexpected obstacles in evangelism, as Latter-day Saints did not respond as other Christians did to the Pentecostal message, pushing Pentecostals to develop new approaches to establishing churches and congregations in Utah. Clark uses newspaper archives, local congregational histories, and dozens of interviews to tell the story of Utah Pentecostals presents a new and fascinating exploratione of Utah’s rich religious history during the twentieth century.Trade Review “Clark provides us with a fascinating look at Pentecostalism within the unique culture of Latter-day Saints. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to understand not only the histories and varieties of Pentecostalisms in Utah, but also their relationship to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."—Cecil M. Robeck Jr., coeditor of The Cambridge Companion to Pentecostalism “By capturing the context of Mormon/Pentecostal interactions in Utah since the early twentieth century, Clark offers a much-needed boost and corrective. This kind of comparative religious history promises to open doors to fill that void."—James Goff, Appalachian State UniversityTable of Contents Acknowledgments Introduction 1. Book SynopsisA fascinating exposé of the global revolution you've never heard of: a deep-pocketed, tech-savvy Christian movement reshaping our societies from within. How has a Christian movement, founded at the turn of the twentieth century by the son of freed slaves, become the fastest-growing religion on Earth? Pentecostalism has 600 million followers; by 2050, they'll be one in ten people worldwide. This is the religion of the Holy Spirit, with believers directly experiencing God and His blessings: success for the mind, body, spirit and wallet.Pentecostalism is a social movement. It serves impoverished people in Africa and Latin America, and inspires anti-establishment leaders from Trump to Bolsonaro. In Australia, Europe and Korea, it throws itself into culture wars and social media, offering meaning and community to the rootless and marginalised in a fragmenting world.Reporting this revolution from twelve countries and six US states, Elle Hardy weaves a timeless t

Berghahn Books Going to Pentecost: An Experimental Approach to
Book Synopsis Co-authored by three anthropologists with long–term expertise studying Pentecostalism in Vanuatu, Angola, and Papua New Guinea/the Trobriand Islands respectively, Going to Pentecost offers a comparative study of Pentecostalism in Africa and Melanesia, focusing on key issues as economy, urban sociality, and healing. More than an ordinary comparative book, it recognizes the changing nature of religion in the contemporary world – in particular the emergence of “non-territorial” religion (which is no longer specific to places or cultures) – and represents an experimental approach to the study of global religious movements in general and Pentecostalism in particular.Trade Review “… a valuable addition to the literature on Pentecostalism. It is an experiment in comparative anthropology which employs an intriguing and innovative method and theory… This book is likely to stimulate salutary re-thinking about what passes as ‘established’ assumptions about the nature, history, and theory of Pentecostal research in the social sciences.” • Contemporary Religion “… a rich comparative study of sites in Africa and Melanesia in the thrall and thick of ‘Pentecost.’… [It] succeeds as a comparative and collective ethnography of three sites of modern ‘Pentecost,’ encouraging readers to see ‘Pentecostalism’ as not merely a new religious movement but rather a multiplicity of new religious movements, for they are many, emerging from and embedded within distinct historical and cultural contexts…It will also provide sociologists of religion who study new religious movements ethnographically with much food for thought and many opportunities for scholarly introspection.” • Sociology of Religion “Going to Pentecost raises important questions that intersect with theoretical issues in religion, globalization, and research about everyday life, that extend beyond the anthropology of Christianity and therefore, important for the broader more multidisciplinary study of Pentecostalism.” • Anthropos “This volume should be commended for its methodological device that allows for further investigation in the study of transnational religions. Theories develop directly from comparative field research… this book’s creative agenda should be both explored and further developed, and I would recommend it primarily to scholars in the fields of anthropology, Pentecostal studies, missiology, and world Christianity.” • Pneuma. The Journal of the Society for Pentecostal Studies “Well-written, accessible, and groundbreaking… this book offers to rejuvenate the anthropology of Pentecostalism.” • Jon Bialecki, University of Edinburgh “Ethnographically well-grounded, conceptually innovative, and experimental in its comparative approach. Although there have been many collaborative publications on global Pentecostalism, few are so well integrated and are able to develop arguments through a truly comparative ethnography.” • Kim Knibbe, University of GroningenTable of Contents List of Figures Acknowledgements PART I: INTRODUCTIONS Introduction: Going to ‘Pentecost’: Outline of an Experiment Interlude: Locations in 'Pentecost' Reading Guide PART II: PRESENTATIONS FROM 'PENTECOST' Chapter 1. James Currey Violent Conversion: Brazilian Pentecostalism and
Book SynopsisExamines Pentecostal conversion as a force of change, revealing new insights into its dominant role in global Christianity today. There has been an extraordinary growth in Pentecostalism in Africa, with Brazilian Pentecostals establishing new transnational Christian connections, initiating widespread changes not only in religious practice but in society. This book describes its rise in Maputo, capital of Mozambique, and the sometimes dramatic impact of Pentecostalism on women. Here large numbers of urban women are taking advantage of the opportunities Pentecostalism offers to overcome restrictions at home, pioneer new life spaces and change their lives through the power of the Holy Spirit. Yet, conversion can also mean a violent rupturing with tradition, with family and with social networks. As the pastors encourage women to cut their ties with the past, including ancestral spirits, they come to see their kin and husbands as imbued with evil powers, and many leave their families. Conquering spheres that used to be forbidden to them, they often live alone as unmarried women, sometimes earning more than men of a similar age. They are also expected to donate huge sums to the churches, often money that they can ill afford, bringing new hardships. Linda van de Kamp is Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.Trade ReviewVan de Kamp's book provides a valuable insight into the multifaceted nature of religion, economics, and social relations in Mozambique. . . . [H]er text is not only an indispensable resource for scholars studying religion in Africa, but also for those researching global Christianity and Pentecostalism. * READING RELIGION *One always stands to gain from studies that foreground the often overlooked lives of women and, moreover, women in the often overlooked Lusophone world. Violent Conversion deserves to be read by all interested in global Pentecostalism, religion and gender, religion and globalization, African studies, and Brazilian studies. * PENTECO STUDIES *A vital contribution to discussions about Pentecostalism and the anthropology of Christianity, kinship and gender roles under neoliberalism, and urban studies in Mozambique. * AMERICAN ETHNOLOGIST *Violent Conversions is, without doubt, mandatory reading for scholars of Christianity . [it] highlights the urgency of researching 'religion' as a domain [that is a] central part of social life. The author shows how Pentecostalism is an agent - and not the result - of globalization. * MANÁ *This publication provides valuable knowledge on the possible consequences of south-south Pentecostal mission. * SOCIAL SCIENCES & MISSION *Table of ContentsIntroduction Gender, Family and Social Transformations in Maputo Transnational Spaces of Conquest Moving Frontiers: the Generational Trajectories of Pentecostal Women Converting the Spirit Spouse Terapia do amor: Confrontational Public Love 'Holy Bonfires' and Campaigns Conclusion: Violent Conversion Bibliography
