Taylor & Francis Ltd The Structure of the Defense Industry
Book SynopsisProponents of arms control and disarmament are often confronted with the argument that reductions in defense expenditure lead to cutbacks in military industries and thus to economic hardship. While a reduction in defense production would cause some economic dislocation, this would be mitigated by the ability of the economy to adapt to changing patterns of production. This book, first published in 1983, assesses the likely effects of reductions in defense industries by an examination of the roles these industries play in national economies. Each chapter discusses industry employment, output, research and development, capital value, profitability, concentration and competition, internal organization and regional employment concentration. Other questions considered include the economic importance of weapons exports, the defense industry as a leading edge' in maintaining national technological capabilities, and the reliance of individual firms on defense contracting.Table of ContentsPreface Milton Leitenberg and Nicole Ball Introduction: The Military and the Economy Frank Blackaby 1. Book SynopsisThis book locates US elites as members of corporate elite networks and drivers of corporate elite interests, arguing that studying the social sources of US power plays an important part in understanding the nature of their decisions in US foreign policy.Exploring the decisions taken by American elites on the Iraq War, the author argues that the decisions and agendas US elites pursued in Iraq were driven by corporate elite interests embedded in them as individuals and in groups through the corporate elite networks they were rooted in which they prioritised, using democracy promotion as a cover up. Using elite theory, membership network analysis and content analysis, this book explains who these elites were, how their backgrounds and social influences impacted their world-views, and what this looked like in a detailed exploration of their decision-making on the ground in Iraq. Nouri examines the nature of US power, what drives it, what it looks like and its legacies.ThTable of ContentsIntroduction Chapter One: Theories and methods Chapter Two: Backgrounds, world-views, and networks in the George W. Bush elite Chapter Three: US elite decision-making in the creation of Iraq’s 2005 constitution Chapter Four: US elite decision-making in the privatisation of Iraq Chapter Five: The legacy of US democracy promotion in Iraq – Iraq’s elitist political system Conclusion

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Future of Sea Power
Book SynopsisThis book, first published in 1990, presents a fundamental reassessment of maritime strategy. It analyses the lessons of twentieth-century naval warfare and examines in detail the changing face of naval warfare, both in terms of the weapons used and the platforms from which they are launched and controlled. It looks at the evolving uses of the seas, both economic and military, and sets sea power against the developing world environment, political, legal and economic, discussing those factors that stimulate nations to exert power at sea and those that limit their naval capabilities. It also develops a theoretical framework for future thinking about maritime strategy and forces, revises and updates Mahan's classical analysis of the foundations of sea power, and discusses thinking about naval tasks.Table of ContentsPart 1.
