Book Synopsis''I loved this book, I was moved by this book and now I will share this book with my own mother.'' Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love. From the New York Times best-selling author of The Middle Place comes a new memoir that examines the bond between mothers and daughters. Kelly Corrigan''s mother summarised the the division of labour in her family as: ''Your father''s the glitter, but I''m the glue.'' This meant nothing to Kelly, who left her childhood sure that her mum would be nothing more than background for the rest of Kelly''s life. After college, she took off see things and Become Interesting. In a matter of months her savings had dwindled and she needed a job. That''s how she met John Tanner, a newly widowed Australian father of two looking for a live-in nanny. There, in that small, motherless house her mother''s voice was suddenly everywhere. Each day she spent with the Tanner kids was a day she spent reconsidering her rTrade ReviewIt's a great story, made all the more memorable because it is true. And because although it is far from Kelly's dream job, she is a good person and she wants to do nice things for the family. I loved the adage , Things happen when you leave the house, but by the end it seemed that you don't have to leave the house, as long as you've already left the country. Evan, I'm looking at you boy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, finishing it in under 48 hours. It can be hard, sometimes, to care that much about someone else's life, their personal-to-them details that don't mean much to you, but the author got me so invested in this book I needed to know what happened to all the featured characters. The ending, in particular the epilogue itself, made me weep and I was sorry for the way some of it turned out, though not surprised. I too have traveled the world and made great friends along the way, but I'd be at a loss to tell you where they are and what they're doing now, Facebook updates aside. * The Book Bag *It's easy to see how Corrigan has become a best-selling author: she has an immensely likeable voice... while it's "heart-warming it's also perceptive. * Sunday Herald *

  • Why Is My Child in Charge?: A Roadmap to End

Rowman & Littlefield Why Is My Child in Charge?: A Roadmap to End

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTame your toddler with seven key shifts in mindset that will help you parent with clarity, calmness, and self-control Through stories from her practice, Claire Lerner shows parents how making critical mindshifts—seeing their children’s behaviors through a new lens —empowers parents to solve their most vexing childrearing challenges. This process puts parents back in the driver’s seat, where they belong and where their children need them to be. These real life stories provide a roadmap for how to tune into the root causes of children’s behavior and how to create and implement strategies that are tailored to the unique needs of each child and family. Through these stories, Claire provides a treasure trove of practical solutions that are based in science and which work in real life. Why Is My Child In Charge? picks up where other books have left parents hanging. Most parenting books offer solutions that sound good on paper but don’t work in practice. They are aspirational rather than achievable, or they offer one-size-fits-all approaches that don’t meet the needs of an individual child. They can compound parents’ feelings of frustration and thus, can be counterproductive. Case by case, Claire unpacks the individualized process she guides parents through to solve the most common challenges such as throwing tantrums in public; delaying bedtime for hours; refusing to participate in family mealtimes; and resisting potty training. Employing a relatable story-telling approach, Claire elucidates: The faulty mindsets that pose obstacles to parents seeing the situation more objectively The essential mindshifts that enable parents to quickly identify the root causes of the problem The Development of an action plan tailored to each unique child and family Why is My Child in Charge? Is like having a child development specialist in your home. It shows how you can develop “win-win” strategies that translate into adaptable, happy kids and calm, connected and in-control parents. It will help you be the parent you want to be.

Book Synopsis“We are matter and long to be received by an Earth that conceived us, which accepts and reconstitutes us, its children, each of us, without exception, every one. The journey is long, and then we start homeward, fathomless as to what home might make of us.” —from The River You TouchWhen Chris Dombrowski burst onto the literary scene with Body of Water, the book was acclaimed as “a classic” (Jim Harrison) and its author compared with John McPhee. Dombrowski begins the highly anticipated The River You Touch with a question as timely as it is profound: “What does a meaningful, mindful, sustainable inhabitance on this small planet look like in the anthropocene?”He answers this fundamental question of our time initially by listening lovingly to rivers and the land they pulse through in his adopted home of Montana. Transplants from the post-industrial Midwest, he and his partner, Mary, assemble a life based precariously on her income as a schoolteacher, his as a poet and fly-fishing guide. Before long, their first child arrives, followed soon after by two more, all “free beings in whom flourishes an essential kind of knowing […], whose capacity for wonder may be the beacon by which we see ourselves through this dark epoch.” And around the young family circles a community of friends—river-rafting guides and conservationists, climbers and wildlife biologists—who seek to cultivate a way of living in place that moves beyond the mythologized West of appropriation and extraction.Moving seamlessly from the quotidian—diapers, the mortgage, a threadbare bank account—to the metaphysical—time, memory, how to live a life of integrity—Dombrowski illuminates the experience of fatherhood with intimacy and grace. Spending time in wild places with their children, he learns that their youthful sense of wonder at the beauty and connectivity of the more-than-human world is not naivete to be shed, but rather wisdom most of us lose along the way—wisdom that is essential for the possibility of transformation.Trade ReviewPraise for The River You Touch“A poignant rumination on marriage, parenthood, friendship and what it means to connect with nature.”—USA Today“Montana-based poet and fly-fishing guide Chris Dombrowski tells a deeply personal story about his life on rivers, raising a family in a wild place with wild yearnings to live on the edge. A lyrical memoir and ode to trout and riparian ecosystems, every sentence of this book sings.”—Nicholas Triolo, Outside Magazine“There’s enjoying nature, and then there’s the ability to write well about it. The River You Touch is a love song that readers with the same musical taste are sure to admire.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune“The River You Touch is an excellent memoir about family, fatherhood and fishing from the wordsmith, Chris Dombrowski.”—Monte Burke, Forbes“A sparkling, passionate ode . . . Dombrowski opens doors to his work and life. Pass through any and it’s unlikely you’ll emerge unchanged.”—Shelf Awareness, starred review“A heartfelt memoir of life and fatherhood in Big Sky country . . . Through a collection of vignettes, the author shares his concerns for the environment, the effects of the appropriation of land from Native inhabitants, and the emotions the landscape stirs in him. ‘The angler standing in the river is not so much absolved of time as disburdened of it, able to shirk its weight’ . . . Nature lovers will be captivated by Dombrowski’s lyrical descriptions of the land and its wildlife, while parents are sure to relate to his familial challenges and sacrifice. A beautifully and poignantly written tribute to a beloved landscape and its spirit.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review"The River You Touch, Chris Dombrowski's second nonfiction book, will change the way people see the world . . . Equally weighted in this admirably woven memoir by a poet, teacher, river and fly-fishing guide, is the quotidian struggle of staying afloat in fast moving streams of financial hardship, environmental concern and creative ambition . . . Dombrowski raises the bar for all of us by casting light on maternal-male instincts. He torches the narrative of the single solitary man, gritting it out by himself, conquering the mountain, killing prey or whatever. He rightfully acknowledges the vital power of community that makes a great man toughened by his own vulnerability."—BOMB Magazine“This treasure of a memoir is a poignant exploration of fatherhood and friendship, fly fishing and hunting, and how to mindfully make one’s way in a noisy, sometimes messy world, navigating births and deaths, almost always within a shady walk of a refreshing river pool or the solace grasped on a stretch of trout water.”—Bill Bryant, Inlander"Dombrowski writes with fresh sensitivity about his life...The River You Touch chronicles the possibilities for an artistic, healthy, balanced, family-integrated existence…recognizing that 'there is nothing as wild and vital' as their company."—Henry Hughes, Harvard Review“The River You Touch is a personal guide like no other . . . a lyrical, visually rich, once-in-a-lifetime river trip. . . . Packed with thought-provoking narrative that may guide you to being a better human.”—Montana Quarterly“Buy this book for yourself. And another for any friend who seeks to live a mindful and creative life in the throes of responsibility to family, self, community and a little plot of land on the planet.”—Contemplify“Eloquent . . . [Dombrowski] captures the seasons of this singular, wild country—netting the first fish of early spring, gathering morels, harvesting pheasant and elk for holiday meals with friends—around the frame of raising three children . . . All of this entails ‘a combination of the chaotic and the monastic,’ as he explains, from sleepless nights to endless diaper changes, bedtime reading, making meals and washing dishes. ‘Hold fast to their wonder,’ a voice inside him utters as encouragement, which could also be a reminder that there is nothing as ‘wild and vital’ as our children.”—Taos News"An intimate collection of related vignettes that ruminate on an outdoor life along Montana's stunning rivers and [Dombrowski's] challenging interior struggle over providing a dependable living for his growing family . . . Populated by a panoply of gorgeous images—'I was nineteen—the Yellowstone flowing around my hips swept quicksilver-streaked beneath the vast moonlit snowfields of the Crazy Mountains'—this is a complex, candid meditation on parenting, fishing, writing, and living in a manner that will stir the blood and fire the intellect."—Booklist“Nature writer Dombrowski evokes both wilderness splendor and the hardscrabble effort of living paycheck to paycheck in this exquisite work. In lyrical language replete with vivid imagery, Dombrowski reflects on his 25 years as a fly-fishing guide, his uncertainty over writing and poetry, his impending fatherhood and ‘fear of ushering children into a periled world’ . . . he renders his love of the natural world in incandescent prose: ‘the land itself . . . a blessing, yes, but also a kind of passage, a shaft of fall light shone down on a trace path that leads out of a previously impenetrable wood.’ Punctuated by the frank candor of a writer weighing sacrifice and art, this introspective memoir will hook fans of A River Runs Through It.”—Publishers Weekly“A lyrical exploration of a beloved place and lifestyle steeped in the natural world, by a writer for whom quality of life supersedes the need for financial security. Will appeal to readers who relish memoirs that skillfully intertwine nature, the American West, and fishing.”—Library Journal“In slow, eddying prose, [The River You Touch] mines an ordinary life for evocative reflections on family, friendship, and the meaning found in a rugged landscape . . . Suggesting that, like a river, a life well lived includes ‘headlong shots through roaring box canyons’ in addition to ‘the hypnotic, elliptical movement of water running back on itself,’ The River You Touch is a profound, moving memoir that contemplates the earth, family, and community in its tributes to the intimate beauty of western Montana.”—Foreword Reviews“Dombrowski’s prose is familiar and inviting… it’s a subtle craft, this translation of outdoor commitment onto the page, extending leaves of solidarity to audiences unknown.”—Christopher Schaberg, Flyfish Journal“Lyrical and complex, The River You Touch keeps you grounded in the wonder of nature and place as the author navigates through life as a parent, writer, and partner. Dombrowski, a poet, writer, and fishing guide, seamlessly weaves together new and interesting perspectives on fatherhood while painting moving scenes of the American West and allowing glimpses into the many challenges of parenthood and the writing life.”—Aurora Bonner, Hippocampus Magazine"A touching and moving story about a family that chooses to live in the ‘wild’ and call a river home. I absolutely love this memoir and I think you will, to especially if you’re a fan of water.”—Linda Bond, Auntie’s Bookstore, Spokane, WA"A naturalist memoir with rich language and reflections on parenting, economic survival, and mental health. Striving to achieve a more sustainable lifestyle with his family, the author becomes anchored to his home ground in Montana. He focuses on his wife and children, the lure of wild game, fishing, and his love of writing. His interactions with authors Jim Harrison and Debra Magpie Eraling provide an added and unique perspective. It may often be the artist’s curse to live economically disadvantaged, but Dombrowski turns the experience into blissful prose.”—Todd Miller, Arcadia Books, Spring Green, WI“This is a touching tribute to nature and fatherhood. A poet and fly-fishing guide in love with the wilds of Montana, Detroit transplant Chris Dombrowski’s sensitive treatise on the birth and raising of his three children and being a good citizen to the planet is a lesson on paying attention to the natural world in which we reside.”—Vicki Honeyman, Literati Bookstore, Ann Arbor, MI“Heartfelt, moving, and gorgeously written, The River You Touch is a love song to the rivers of Montana, a love song to a way of life. Dombrowski writes with tenderness and insight and with a deep, personal gratitude to the rivers that have taught him who he is—a husband, a father, a fisherman, a poet, a person who loves the earth as well as mourns it. What a tremendous achievement.”—Emily Ruskovitch, author of Idaho “Midway through The River You Touch, poet and naturalist Chris Dombrowski tells us, ‘To truly fathom a river, is to know it from its headwaters to its mouth…’ To truly fathom a life—one’s place, community, family, history, purpose on earth—is the sacred pursuit of this moving and beautifully written memoir. Here is the story of a man attempting to reckon with his cultural inheritance, his vocation, his past, and his responsibilities to family, land, and history. Along the route, he continuously encounters reminders of his own mortal smallness and, simultaneously, the numinous interconnection of all beings. Like the river, Dombrowski’s story is complicated and enlivened by all it touches, ‘an extension of everything upstream and down’—from the joys, doubts, and terrors of parenthood; to the precarity of making a life in art; to the rivers and mountains that are both his source of sustenance and place of worship; and the fraught layers of histories that map over it all. By the end, I’d fallen hopelessly in love with Dombrowski’s Montana, not just its rivers and mountains, but the unforgettable cast of characters that populate his world—from children who speak in beguiling riddles to crusty old hunters whose colloquial panache rivals the naughtiest Shakespeare. Dombrowski brings a near-religious attentiveness to the details of his world, both our wise guide and awe-struck fellow-passenger.” —Lisa Wells, author of Believers“You won’t soon read a more beautiful book, nor one so earthy, wise, delicious, and alive. This is not a book about fish or rivers or Montana or parenting. This is a book, to paraphrase another poet, plain and simple, to break open the frozen sea within.”—Rick Bass“In the way a fable points us toward rightness, so The River You Touch leads us to a necessary truth: that deep knowledge and love of a place shapes us in all the ways we will need to survive. With poetry, vulnerability, and crisp storytelling, Dombrowski takes us into a wild, river-thrummed Montana, and into the stormswept territory of marriage and family. It’s a journey with a guide who knows the country at a cellular level, and whose bafflement and wonder renews our own. The magic of the book is that I came away convinced that learning to love a trout, or an autumn snowfall, or a wolf crossing a river, would teach me to love a friend or a partner in pain—and so to love and be connected to all beings. Damn.”--Peter Heller, bestselling author of The Dog Stars, The River, and The Guide“With The River You Touch, Chris Dombrowski has established himself at the forefront of American writers of place. This beautiful, clear-eyed, tender memoir is as intimate as a love letter, brimming with wise observations on family, parenthood, home, duty, and passion. The Montana within these pages is wild and rugged, yes. But it is also as gentle as a cold stream running through your fingers or a child sleeping in your arms. I loved this book.”—Nickolas Butler, bestselling author of Godspeed and Shotgun Lovesongs Praise for Body of Water: A Sage, A Seeker, and the World's Most Elusive Fish“Dombrowski’s writing exhibits a poetic sense of economy. There’s a tremendous amount of information here on the geological, botanical, biological and human history of the region, but the author uses only what’s necessary to the story and relates it in evocative, concise language that reminded me of Gary Snyder one minute and John McPhee the next. […] Dombrowski’s exacting descriptions of the sport make me long to try it again--and to wish that more fishing books were written by poets.”—John Gierach, Wall Street Journal “Body of Water is about bonefishing, but it is also about ecosystem exploitation, class conflict, wealth inequity, race relations, Bahamian history, mentor-mentee relationships, nature as the catalyst for self-awareness, and more. […] The lyrical narrative strikes a delicate balance between reflective memoir and reportage.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune“Body of Water is wonderful, an evocation of the why and not the how in angling. Dombrowski has a way of describing that which may have become prosaic for the seasoned angler--the terminal tackle, the fly cast--in new and illuminating ways.”—Forbes“Dombrowski elevates the fly-fishing-as-meditation narrative by the sheer fact that he’s so damn good at writing about it.”—Outside“Rarely do cautionary tales dazzle like this. It’s a credit to Dombrowski’s prose, which torques and twists and glistens into view much like the bonefish itself. […] By book’s end, Dombrowski leaves readers with many lessons, thought this one most of all: whether on a skiff or in a book, the guide matters. And Dombrowski is the one you want.”—Los Angeles Times“Uncanny and moving. This book will not only make you change your vacation plans, it might make you change your life. A reverent, almost holy, book of angling lore.”—Debra Magpie Earling, author of Perma Red “At its core, Body of Water is about our increasingly tenuous connection to nature, from a poet who understands the source of that strange and melancholic joy that we are blessed with only when we stand in wild places.”—Steve Rinella, author of Meat Eater“A lyrical, genre-defying tribute. […] Drawing on Caribbean history and the evolution of fly-fishing, Dombrowski’s foray into nonfiction proves thematically complex, finely wrought, and profoundly life-affirming.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)“A metaphor-laced meditation on the art and practice of fly-fishing, the social and economic history of the Bahamas, the evolution of archipelago geology and the chronicle of Dombrowski’s personal struggle to juggle his fishing and poetry obsessions against the financial needs of his own family. […] Fly-fishing mysticism at its best.”—Shelf AwarenessTable of ContentsPreface ∙ 1 I. • Unschooled: Raising Curious, Well-Educated

Chicago Review Press Unschooled: Raising Curious, Well-Educated

Book SynopsisEducation has become synonymous with schooling, but it doesn’t have to be. As schooling becomes increasingly standardized and test driven, occupying more of childhood than ever before, parents and educators are questioning the role of schooling in society. Many are now exploring and creating alternatives. In a compelling narrative that introduces historical and contemporary research on self-directed education, Unschooled also spotlights how a diverse group of individuals and organizations are evolving an old schooling model of education. These innovators challenge the myth that children need to be taught in order to learn. They are parents who saw firsthand how schooling can dull children’s natural curiosity and exuberance and others who decided early on to enable their children to learn without school. Educators who left public school classrooms discuss launching self-directed learning centers to allow young people’s innate learning instincts to flourish, and entrepreneurs explore their disillusionment with the teach-and-test approach of traditional schooling.Trade Review"Kerry McDonald is leagues ahead of the rest of the education reform community. This book demonstrates why. McDonald's robust evidence of high-quality education without schooling forces us to consider something that makes everyone feel very uncomfortable: our system of compulsory schooling may do more harm than good." Corey DeAngelis, author of Doing More with Less and The School Choice Voucher"Kerry McDonald's Unschooled is a remarkable overview of the growing grassroots movement away from institutionalized education and toward self-directed learning in our homes and communities." Patrick Farenga, author of Teach Your Own and publisher of Growing Without Schooling magazine and www.HoltGWS.com"Whether you're currently unschooling, curious about unschooling, or simply know that something's not right with the institutionalized educational model, Kerry McDonald's Unschooled is an invaluable resource. To read it is to realize just how rich education can be." Ben Hewitt, author of Home Grown"This well-researched, inspiring book clearly demonstrates that self-directed education supports each person's innate curiosity and drive to learn. While the form it takes is unique to the individual, experience shows it typically fosters confidence, community engagement, and an abiding love of learning. Hope is right here in these pages." Laura Grace Weldon, author of Free Range Learning" Unschooled manages to offer everything: a coherent history lesson, fascinating profiles, an explanation of how self-directed learning works, and an overview of innovative programs, all delivered in a lively, encouraging voice." Grace Llewellyn, author of The Teenage Liberation Handbook and Guerrilla Learning"This book makes a compelling case for giving kids back their brains, time, curiosity, driveand joy!" Lenore Skenazy, president of Let Grow and founder of Free-Range Kids"Unschooled is a wonderful book, enviably balanced between rock-solid data and warm-hearted stories about real families and real young people who have flourished outside our country's factory-inspired school systems. It's not the first book to see how bright and interesting the world can be outside the soiledand, these days, often barredwindows of America's schools, but it's fresh, convincing, and clearly written." Robert Epstein, PhD, senior research psychologist, American Institute for Behavioral Research and Technology, and author of Teen 2.0: Saving Our Children and Families from the Torment of Adolescence

Tracing her own journey to the nadir of sleeplessness via social retreat and murderous rage, Frizzell draws on the latest research to explore:- What effect does parenting have on your career?- How can we make childcare affordable and fit for purpose?- If parenting is so hard, why does anyone ever do it more than once?Funny, reassuring and radically ambitious, Holding the Baby sheds light on the ways in which we fail new parents, and offers a rallying crying that we fight for a better alternative.Trade Review'Makes excellent, radical sense' * The Times *'My favourite person on the politics of parenthood. I cannot wait for my hard copy which before long will no doubt be decorated with my own personal reflections and annotations. I believe that this book will support me as I strive for a better life for me and my daughter." Caroline Danks"This been book could have been my best friend back in the days when I found myself alone, in a new house at a new town, with no friends and family, raising a four year old on my own. No money, no furniture, had to leave uni, and just trying to figure out life again." Sea Dancer"Absolutely loved it, made me realise all the things I was feeling and experiencing were totally normal, great insight and advice for how to work through your challenges. Definitely recommend for any single parent or someone helping support a single parent." Emma M"Nina's book is a beacon to guide you out of the fog. It's ideal for parents moving forward from conflict, trauma and/or domestic abuse. She writes about practical steps you can make to change your thought patterns, and how to rediscover which values you want to live by. Michaela S"The Parent Who Stayed is an amazing and helpful read for people going through a difficult breakup. I could have done with this book 5 years ago when my own marriage ended unexpectedly in a traumatic way. Nina really has an amazing insight into this and having been through it is very well placed to assist other people on the same journey. She understands what you will be facing and wants to help you through it.The book is designed to be read in useful chunks and helps to guide you on the path to taking charge of your new life and the changes to your family unit. Nina presents the facts very well and gives very good advice and help on how to move along the path, whilst describing and understanding the feelings that you will be going through. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who becomes a single parent but especially those in trauma." Karen Chugg"Absolutely brilliant. For anyone (male or female) who has ever felt the overwhelming, crushing responsibility of lone parenting." Rachel Bradford"I have really enjoyed this book. Nina speaks honestly about her own lone parent journey. It is well written, clear and easy to understand . I would like to keep this as a handbook for life , to support me whilst parenting my own two children. As well as the practical guidance offered in the book I particularly enjoyed reading the case studies. I love reading actual accounts of people like me, women from different backgrounds arriving at the same place as me. Reading how people were able to take an active role in their and their children's lives is encouraging and helps me to have a feeling of solidarity with others and to feel less alone in my situation. Above all this book gives me hope and offers structure where there often is none, many parents have that feeling of coasting, give this a try to help you to regain control and become a leader for your family.""This was such an easy read which is great when you don't have the headspace to focus for long. I found a lot of aha moments and felt the author was walking with me each step of the way and I love that you can become part of a supportive community of others all experiencing similar feelings. I felt it was written with love and conviction and would recommend to any mother feeling stuck. I say mother because it is more aimed at that role but would equally work for fathers." J T Christie"Nina such a beautiful, well written book. I don't even have children and I felt the powerful emotions and rawness of this book. You hold the reader who in her hours of need as she reaches out for your wisdom needs to be held, soothed and supported to carry on being the parent who stayed..With practical advice, guidance and support you show us that it is possible to lead your family from the front even when your world is thrown upside down." Emma Heptonstall, Former Lawyer, Family Mediator and Divorce Coach"I love Nina's honest style of writing, suddenly going through huge changes feel insurmountable. It's like having an amazing friend take your hand and guide you through the dark woods to safety. Gorgeous book x" Miss A K Challacombe "Loved it, worth its weight in gold if you are a single parent."'If you're feeling lost, alone and overwhelmed by your new life situation, this book will take you by the hand and empower you to create a beautiful new life for you and your family. It's a practical guide... but more than this, Nina is someone who's navigated this situation successfully herself and then created a powerful compass to help others in the same situation...Nina's writing is full of empathy, courage, and hope.At a time when you may be feeling the most lost and alone, 'I Am The Parent Who Stayed' is a lifeline and a guide to a new life that you may not even believe is possible yet...Nina's story (and the many case studies) will show you that 'all is not lost'... and the easy to follow steps are the perfect way to change any 'I can't' thoughts into 'I can, and I will... watch me'!''A refreshingly, inspiring approach to support lone parents. This books takes you on an empowering journey from victim to leader, developing a shared vision for a parent and their child. Nina guides the reader on a journey of self and family development, through the complexities of parenting and growing together, flourishing in order to realise your dreams. As someone who has worked in children's services for over twenty years, alongside parenting alone, I find this a supportive and effective, positive model to motivate and change family lives.''After watching Nina's TED talk on 'broken families' and being involved in her Family Vision course, I had to read this book. As ever, Nina's wisdom shines through and knowing that she has lived every word of this book makes it so much more than a 'how-to-divorce' book, it's a manual for a happy and fulfilled life, written by someone who lives by her words. I'm going to give a copy of "I Am The Parent Who Stayed" to any of my friends who end up standing at the precipice of separation, worried about the future as a lone parent. It is uplifting and inspiring while including some real world advice to strengthen your family, whatever it's size and shape.''I've been working in parenting and domestic abuse research for years, and evaluating what works best for vulnerable parents. This book and the Family Vision programme are amazing tools that take a really innovative, strength based and personal approach to the journey of parenting alone. I think the book is insightful and takes an empowering approach to this incredible role of parent leader. Tired of Anxiety is a step-by step guide for children on how to do the things that matter to them despite anxiety. Based on principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), the book uses evidence-based clinical techniques and describes them in accessible, child-friendly ways to ensure that families have a toolkit for working positively with anxiety over the long term. By acknowledging that difficult thoughts and feelings are a normal part of being human, rather than something we must try to stamp down or wish away, the authors normalise the everyday struggles of anxious young people so that children can learn to 'make friends' with their own anxiety and get on with the more important work of actually living and enjoying their lives. The text is presented in a visually appealing style, with frequent opportunities to engage with the material and a suite of supporting audio meditations.

Channel View Publications Ltd An Introduction to Bilingual Development

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIncreasingly, children grow up hearing two languages from birth. This introductory textbook shows how children learn to understand and speak those languages against the backdrop of their language learning environments. A narrative around the bilingual development of four young children with different language profiles helps to explain the latest research findings in a lively and accessible manner. The narrative describes how bilingually raised children learn to understand and use sounds, words and sentences in two languages, and how they are able to use each of their languages in socially appropriate ways. Positive attitudes towards bilingual development from the people in bilingual children's environments and their recognition that child bilingualism is not monolingualism-times-two are the main ingredients ensuring that children grow up to be happy and expert speakers of two languages.Trade ReviewDe Houwer’s book introduces readers to the research findings about bilingual first language acquisition through the charming stories of four imaginary bilingual children growing up in different contexts. Parents, students, and practitioners alike will discover what to expect from typical bilingual acquisition, including how individual “typical” can be! -- Elena Nicoladis, Department of Psychology, University of Alberta, CanadaThe kind of bilingual development which starts very early, namely bilingual first language acquisition (BFLA), seems to attract much attention and spark much curiosity. How do children manage to acquire two languages simultaneously? In what ways does early bilingual exposure affect the course of their overall language development? Behind such questions lurks the yardstick of monolingualism, by which BFLA is often inappropriately evaluated. Now prominent BFLA expert Annick de Houwer has given us an introductory book with a most balanced and fair view of BFLA as a standard in its own right, tracing the bilingual development of four fictitious prototypical children. As always, her clarity of thought and writing makes the book accessible to anyone. -- Masayo Yamamoto, Professor of Bilingualism Studies, Kwansei Gakuin University, JapanOverall this book is written in an understandable and easy-to-follow manner, particularly due to the use of stories of the four children throughout…this book would be an excellent addition to a course on bilingual child language acquisition, as it contains clearly explained information on bilingual language acquisition in an easily accessible format. -- Alyssa Martoccio, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA * Studies in Second Language Acquisition / Volume 33 / Issue 04 / December 2011, pp 629-631 *Table of Contents1: Introducing the Fancy Term for Bilingual Development: Bilingual First Language Acquisition 2: From Birth to the Comprehension of Words 3: Saying Words and Starting to Combine Them 4: Making Sentences 5: Preschool and Beyond 6: In Conclusion: Bilingual Learning in Context

Book SynopsisDeeno's Dream Journeys in the Big Blue Bubble is a fun and easy-to-use guide to a special relaxation technique for children. Adapted from the system of Autogenics, the six-week programme uses positive affirmations and guided imagery to help children manage their emotions, let go of anxiety and feel calm and confident. Each week, the child is given a new set of 'magic words': a relaxation tool they can draw upon whenever they feel stressed or anxious. An illustrated story based around these words, where the child is asked to imagine they are going on an adventure in a big blue bubble with Deeno the Dinosaur, draws the child into a safe and magical world and guides their minds and bodies into a state of deep, calming relaxation. Suggestions for follow-up practice and creative activities based around that week's words accompany each session, and encourage children to tap into their own imaginations. Separate introductions for parents, teachers and other professionals provide advice on how best to use the technique, whether at home, at school, or elsewhere. There is also a children's introduction, which introduces Deeno and explains the technique in accessible terms.Accessible and engaging, Deeno's Dream Journeys in the Big Blue Bubble is an ideal tool for helping children develop effective relaxation skills in a fun and imaginative way.Trade ReviewThis book is a wonderful introduction into the field of Autogenic Therapy and can extend into the practice of mindfulness. It gives children tools that they can use throughout their lives. Book SynopsisThis concise and highly accessible book contains everything that parents and busy professionals need to know about ADHD.The author describes the spectrum of ADHD, the co-occurring symptoms, and common difficulties that parents face. The rest of the book focuses on solutions, based around four rules. Rule number one is keeping it positive: punishments can change behavior, but only positive approaches can improve attitude. Rule number two is keeping it calm: it's difficult thinking clearly enough to solve problems logically if you are feeling overwhelmed. Rule number three is keeping it organized: this rule relates particularly to the child's school life. Rule number four is to keep doing rules one to three. Finally, Dr. Kutscher discusses the role of medication for treating ADHD. The concluding chapter summarizes the information covered and can also be read as a complete, freestanding text. Useful checklists and further reading recommendations are also included.Realistic and optimistic, this book is the ideal source of information and advice for parents and professionals who are trying to keep up with children who are living without brakes.Trade ReviewHis positive solutions for parents are based around four rules: keep it positive; keep it calm; keep it organised; and the fourth is keep going with rules 1 to 3. -- CerebraThoroughly recommended for parents, families and those who work with children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). -- Youth in MindThis enlightening book captures the complexity of living in a world that is not designed for children with ADHD... Read this one from cover to cover for a concise, yet thorough, review of what living without brakes really means for ADHD kids. -- AdditudeA concise and highly accessible book containing information about ADHD for parents and professionals. -- Current Awareness ServiceParenting a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is demanding, and there are many misconceptions about the diagnosis. But there is help as we learn more about the different facets of ADHD. For clarity, advice, and a healthy dose of optimism, we turned to Martin Kutscher, M.D., a pediatric neurologist and the author of the book ADHD: Living Without Brakes. His best advice: Stay positive. -- Scholastic Parent & ChildMartin Kutscher is a paediatric neurologist and understands the nature of ADHD as well as the perspectives and experiences of parents, teachers and children. He explains ADHD in a clear and engaging style that will ensure that his book will be read, appreciated and the practical strategies implemented at home and at school. I strongly recommend Living Without Brakes as the book of first choice for parents of a child with ADHD. -- Tony Attwood, author of The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome and Asperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and ProfessionalsDr. Kutscher has brilliantly accomplished exactly what he has set out to do. This book is wonderfully concise yet all-inclusive while remaining an easy read for parents and educators alike. The parenting and educational strategies are a great combination of proven methods that are realistic and practical to implement. Most of all, this book will help parents and anyone else who works with these children thoroughly understand how they think and why they function the way they do. -- Heidi Bernhardt, National Director of the Centre for ADHD/ADD Advocacy CanadaEven if parents, teachers, and therapists read no further than the table of contents, they will gain a hugely valuable set of guidelines for helping children with ADHD. Of course, they'd best continue reading, because Dr. Kutscher fleshes out each guideline in the realistic-but-optimistic style his readers have come to expect I cannot imagine a more clear, concise, and empathetic guide. Reading this book is like sitting down for a leisurely chat with an extremely compassionate, informed, and down-to-earth physician. -- Gina Pera, author of Is It You, Me, or Adult ADD?Living with a child who can't control movements or thoughts or emotions can leave parents feeling pretty out of control, too. We may feel that negotiating with kids weakens us, and that profiving a safety net weakens them, but without those thuings days can devolve into cyles of fighting and failure.Maybe the most important thing about ADHD:Living without Brakes is that is gives parents permission to give kids with ADHD - the sort of support and stress releif they need to function successfully. These children require a departure from the standard techniques of firm discipline and learning from mistakes, and if you've been fighting that bad fight without success, it's a releif to know there are other approaches. Many of the ones included in this zippy little book come froo other longer and less zippy works, making it a great introduction to a lot of text you will want to examine in more detail. This is sort of the attention-deficit version of an ADHD help bppk, highlightes by cartoon illustrations and "quizzes" that summarize the chapter in a way that makes it very clear with answers are right and wrong. And if the first 130 pages are still too much for you to wade through? The last thirtyfive summarize the whole book in an even briefer package. That little bit may be perfect for passing on to teachers or family members who are really never going to read those books you recommend. Particularly if they have a negative view of your child's behaviour or your way of handling it, the positive attitude and simplified explanations here may turn their attention to a more productive path. -- About.comTable of ContentsIntroduction. 1.
