  • Modern Quaternary Research in Southeast Asia,

A A Balkema Publishers Modern Quaternary Research in Southeast Asia,

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisWritten for researchers, university lecturers and advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in all fields of archaeological and anthropological study, this collection features new research from different excavation sites around Indonesia together with pioneering expert analysis. Groundbreaking new theories on early colonization feature alongside a thorough and up-to-date examination of field methods and techniques, and valuable insight into human development in Indonesia and beyond. Focused on Java and Sulawesi, these research findings highlight important recent advances in quaternary research. Results from a cave excavation in Southern Java provide a much-needed long-term palaeoclimatic record, based on a lowland pollen sequence from Central Java, while the contributions from South Sulawesi include a pioneering archaeobotanical analysis, a new hypothesis on the earliest human colonisation of this island, and an attempt to reconstruct preceramic human biological population affinities. In addition, the little-known archaeology of the tiny island of Roti is presented and discussed here, with particular attention on prehistoric survival in an impoverished island environment.Table of Contents1. Quaternary Research in Indonesia: Introduction 2. New insight on the prehistoric chronology of Gunung Sewu, Jave, Indonesia 3. The cervids from the Ngebung site ('Kabuh' series, Sangiran Dome, Central Java) and their biostratigraphical significance 4. The significance of the Punung karstic area (eastern Java) for the chronology of the Javanese Paleolithic, with special reference to the Song Terus cave 5. • Morphology and Evolution of Turtles

Springer Morphology and Evolution of Turtles

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume celebrates the contributions of Dr. Eugene Gaffney to the study of turtles, through a diverse and complementary collection of papers that showcases the latest research on one of the most intriguing groups of reptiles. A mix of focused and review papers deals with numerous aspects of the evolutionary history of turtles, including embryonic development, origins, early diversification, phylogenetic relationships, and biogeography. Moreover it includes reports on important but poorly understood fossil turtle assemblages, provides historical perspectives on turtle research, and documents disease and variation in turtles. With its broad scope, which includes descriptions of material and new taxa from Australia, Asia, and Europe, as well as North and South America, this work will be an essential resource for anyone interested in the morphology and evolution of turtles. “This volume’s breadth of time, geography, and taxonomic coverage makes it a major contribution to the field and a ‘must have’ for all vertebrate paleontologists.”, James F. Parham, California State University, CA, USA “A comprehensive and sweeping overview of turtle evolution by the top experts in the field that will interest everyone curious about these unique reptiles.” Jason S. Anderson, University of Calgary, Canada “An invaluable addition to the literature that covers the full spectrum of approaches toward understanding the evolution of these noble creatures.” Ann C. Burke, Wesleyan University, CT , USA “A truly comprehensive volume that both the student of fossil turtles, as well as the general reader interested in these enigmatic creatures, will find fascinating.” Tyler Lyson, Yale University, CT, USATrade ReviewFrom the reviews:“This book describes the latest research on fossil turtles and thus is a substantial addition to the field of vertebrate paleontology. … this work will be an essential resource for all global researchers interested in the morphology and evolution of reptiles, including the most intriguing of them, the turtles. … will be very useful to students, researchers, and scientists in the field of paleontology and biology.” (Rituparna Bose, Priscum, Vol. 21 (1), 2014)“This massive volume will be a landmark in the study of turtles. … This is a rich resource with many photographs and illustrations and information on the contributions of many earlier students of turtles. It is essentially a book for specialists in turtle anatomy and evolution, but some of the more broadly focused chapters will be of use to many professionals in paleontology and biology, and advanced students in those areas. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above.” (D. Bardack, Choice, Vol. 50 (6), February, 2013).Table of ContentsPart I. Perspectives on the Life and Accomplishments of Eugene S. • Atlas of Taphonomic Identifications: 1001+ Images

Springer Atlas of Taphonomic Identifications: 1001+ Images

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe aim of the atlas is to provide images of taphonomic modifications, making it as comprehensive as possible with evidence presently available. This volume is intended both as a field guide for identifying taphonomic modifications in the field, and for use in the laboratory when collections of fossils are being analyzed. Images in the book are a combination of scanning electron micrographs, regular photographs, cross-sections of bones and line drawings and graphs. By providing good quality illustrations of taphonomic modifications, with links between similar types of modification, the atlas provides a reference source for identifying the agents responsible for the modifications, the processes by which they were formed, and the potential bias introduced by the processes. The authors also aim to emphasize on the directions they consider taphonomic studies should be headed. Firstly, we should seek to quantify the degree of bias introduced into a fossil fauna and to take account of this bias before interpreting the palaeoecology of the fossil site. Secondly, we should recognize that taphonomic modifications increase the information encoded in fossils by identifying perimortem and postmortem contexts. This provides a more dynamic and realistic view of the past.Trade Review“The Atlas of Taphonomic Identification is an excellent resource for identification of common taphonomic modifications to bone. The information in this book is addressed to a broad audience of archeologists, anthropologists, paleontologists and forensic scientists. … this book is an excellent resource for professionals and students of many different scientific specialties. … I would recommend this for anyone who might encounter taphonomic issues in vertebrate remains, or indeed anyone with an interest in the subject.” (Karen A. Koy, PRISCUM, The Newsletter of the Paleontological Society, Vol. 26 (1), May, 2021)Table of ContentsIntroduction and Rationale.- Methods in Taphonomy.- Part I: Surface Modifications.- Linear Marks.- Pits and Perforations.- Discoloration and Staining.- Part II: Modifications Affecting Shape.- Abrasion and Rounding.- Part III: Modifications Penetrating Bone Tissue.- Flaking and Cracking.- Corrosion and Digestion Corrosion.- Part IV: Modification by Loss of Bone Tissue or Skeletal Elements.- Breakage and Deformation.- Disarticulation and Completeness.- Part V: Conclusions.- Why Taphonomy?.
