With clear step-by-step instructions accompanying each design, and beautiful photographs to inspire you, Painting Stones will soon have you on your way to creating your own rock art collection. You can even share the fun by creating a quirky treasure trail around your neighbourhood for passers-by to discover!Trade ReviewThe beauty of the front cover indicates the quality of the contents, every page filled with incredible photographs, all Marion's work. For novices, through to real artists, the book is a true inspiration, vibrant, exciting, a step-by-step guide to achieving true pieces of art. The excitement of my granddaughters on seeing the book and the equipment I had bought, all listed clearly in the book, was a joy to see but it was at least an hour before we could get started. They were so entranced with the photographs they had to see each page first of all and then their personal thoughts of Marion had to be read and discussed. This is so much more than a guide, it is a thing of beauty in itself. The three of us decided to start with the first design, the Ladybird which we sketched the basic design but then added our own decoration which the girls loved doing and achieved an excellent result. The instructions are so easy to follow, very clear, and in simple language for all to follow. I honestly cannot praise this book enough and am certain it is going to be referred to many, many times in our craft sessions. Painting stones has never been such fun. All three of us, 6-year-old, 9-year-old, and 73-year-old all gave it 10/10 and at £9.99 is one of the best value books I have owned. -- Jean Vaughan * Customer Review *In four decades of writing about art books, this is only the second one I have seen that is about the well-established practice of painting stones. I may have missed a few smaller ones, but it's not something that's troubled the mainstream. Where the previous one (also published by Search Press) concentrated on animals, this takes a general approach that offers the opportunity to suit subject matter to shape. While Michelangelo's remark about finding out what's in the block might be taking it a bit too far, the principle is not dissimilar. The book is project-based, something bedevilled by the now de rigeur funky typeface used for the headings. The materials list is clear and concise and the stage instructions are very much to the point. The illustrations are sharp and well-sized, which is to be welcomed, and you should have little trouble producing results like the examples Marion provides. -- Henry Malt * The Artist *Getting started doesn't need expensive materials or complicated techniques. These 20 fun designs use just a stone, some acrylic paints and varnish. Clear step-by-step instructions and beautiful photos are ideal for beginners or more seasoned artists and this is the perfect family craft. * Machine Knitting Monthly *Table of ContentsForeword 2 The basics 4 Stones 6 Paints 8 Brushes 9 Painting techniques 10 Projects 12 Ladybird 14, Clownfish 18, Lizard 22, Goldfish 26, Bee 30, Cottage 34, Feather 38, Swan 42, Dragonfly 46, Yellow Mandala 50, Guardian Angel 54, Panda 58, Elephant 62, Penguin 66, Blue Mandala 70, Dandelion 76, Cat 80, Dragon 84, Turtle 88, Mouse 92.

Newcastle Libraries & Information Service John Falconar Slater: The North East's Weatherproof Artist
The first biography of one of the North East’s best-known artists. Written by well-known local art historian and author Marshall Hall, and titled John Falconar Slater – The North East’s Weatherproof Artist, it tells of how the Newcastle-born artist acquired his nickname by wearing his weatherproof oilskins to paint the local coastline in the wildest of climatic conditions. At a time when artists on the Continent were increasingly succumbing to the attractions of open-air painting, leading to their identification as “Impressionists”, a North East artist had been independently practising it for several years, and in weather conditions rarely tackled by its followers in France and elsewhere.

Flame Tree Publishing Italian Renaissance: Masterworks
Book SynopsisThe Renaissance of the 14th–16th centuries was, and forever will be, one of the most pivotal periods in the development of Western art. Its roots spread wide and deep, and much social and intellectual revitalization had begun before this revered time, but the renewed interest in ancient Greek and Roman texts and the development of expanding trade, which brought greater wealth, meant that classical and humanist thought combined with lavish patronage resulted in major breakthroughs across all spheres of human endeavour – art, architecture, music, literature, science, philosophy and more. And, while it spread across Europe, it was Italy that was to be its crucible. With 2020 marking the 500th anniversary of the death of Raphael, one of the stars of the Renaissance, this sumptuous book celebrates the prolific output of this era. From the radical perspective of Giotto di Bondone (1267–1337), breaking out of the Middles Ages, to the giants of the High Renaissance: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael, and many more, the reader will delight in the fascinating insights offered by the text accompanied by lush reproductions.

Vintage Publishing Michelangelo And The Pope's Ceiling
Book SynopsisIn 1508, Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The thirty-three-year-old Michelangelo had very little experience of the physically and technically taxing art of fresco; and, at twelve thousand square feet, the ceiling represented one of the largest such projects ever attempted. Nevertheless, for the next four years he and a hand-picked team of assistants laboured over the vast ceiling, making thousands of drawings and spending back-breaking hours on a scaffold fifty feet above the floor. The result was one of the greatest masterpieces of all time. This fascinating book tells the story of those four extraordinary years and paints a magnificent picture of day-to-day life on the Sistine scaffolding - and outside, in the upheaval of early sixteenth-century Rome.Trade ReviewRoss King deftly stitches modern Michelangelo scholarship into his fluent and gripping narrative. For the first time in his own words, Condo reveals the genesis and significance of his distorted creations and unveils previously unseen paintings created during the pandemic and the political turmoil in the United States.Didier Ottinger examines the career, influences, and works of this unconventional artist who is at once rewriting the history of art and caricaturing the immoderation of the modern world. Prestel Giovanni Bellini: The Art of Contemplation
Book SynopsisFollowing the arc of Bellini’s career, from his early devotional paintings to his later, occasionally secular works, this book offers an in-depth appreciation of the Venetian master who dominated the Early Renaissance. Featuring nearly every extant Bellini work, as well as those of his contemporaries, this book brims with gorgeous Renaissance art. Author Johannes Grave focuses on some of the artist’s greatest works including Allegoria Sacra, the Brera Pietà, and the altarpiece of San Giobbe—to explore how Bellini excelled in tempera before mastering oil painting. Grave discusses how Bellini’s precise lines, his delicate facial expressions, and the subtle effects of light and shadow were used in his religious paintings as well as his portraiture and late mythological depictions. This book examines Bellini’s life, including his complex relationships with his father Jacopo, his brother Gentile, and his brother-in-law Andrea Mantegna. It considers the original contexts of Bellini’s works, and elucidates the ways in which these paintings were meant to be perceived. The book also links Bellini’s devotional paintings with the poetic creations of his pupil Giorgione. An important contribution to the scholarship of Renaissance art, this masterful book reaffirms Bellini’s status as one of Venice’s greatest painters.Trade Review“An impressively informative, magnificently illustrated, exceptionally well written, organized and presented study that arguably reaffirms the establishment of Bellini's status as one of Venice's greatest painters.” -Midwest Book Review

Taschen GmbH Futurism
Book SynopsisWith motion and machines as its most treasured tropes, Futurism was founded in 1909 by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, along with painters Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, and Gino Severini. With affiliate painters, sculptors, designers, architects, and writers, the group sought to subsume the dusty establishment into a new age of sleek, strong, purified modernity. Futurism’s place in art history is as ambivalent as it is important. The movement pioneered revolutionary methods to convey movement, light, and speed, but sparks controversy in its glorification of war and fascist politics. Their frenzied, almost furious, canvases, are as remarkable for their macho aggression as they are for their radical experimentation with brushstrokes, texture, and color in the quest to record an object moving through space. With key examples from the Futurists’ prolific output and leading practitioners, this book introduces the movement that spat vitriol at all -isms of the past and, in so doing, created an -ism of their own.

Taschen GmbH Gustav Klimt. The Complete Paintings
Book SynopsisOver a century after his death, Viennese artist Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) still startles with his unabashed eroticism, dazzling surfaces, and artistic experimentation. This monograph gathers all of Klimt’s major works alongside authoritative art historical commentary and privileged access to the artist’s archive. With top quality illustration, including new photography of the celebrated Stoclet Frieze, the book follows Klimt through his prominent role in the Secessionist movement of 1897, his candid rendering of the female body, and his lustrous “golden phase” when gold leaf brought a shimmering tone and texture to such beloved works as The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, also known as The Woman in Gold.Through luminous spreads and carefully curated details, the monograph traces the repertoire of Japanese, Byzantine, and allegorical stimuli that informed Klimt’s flattened perspectives, his symbolic vocabulary, and his mosaic-like textures. Drawing upon contemporary critics and voices, the book also examines the art world’s polarized reception to Klimt’s pictures as much as his own stylistic trajectory. From his landscape painting to erotic works to the controversial ceiling for the Great Hall of the University of Vienna, we see how Klimt’s admixture of tradition and daring divided the press and public—becried by some as a pornographer, hailed by others as a modern maestro.Trade Review“…a sensory vitamin pill.” * Allure Magazine *"This book is simply stunning. Taschen GmbH Egon Schiele. The Complete Paintings 1909–1918
Book SynopsisAfter Egon Schiele (1890-1918) freed himself from the shadow of his mentor and role model Gustav Klimt, he had just ten years to inscribe his signature style into the annals of modernity before the Spanish flu claimed his life. Being a child prodigy quite aware of his own genius and a passionate provocateur, this didn’t prove to be too big a challenge. His haggard, overstretched figures, drastic depiction of sexuality, and self-portraits in which he staged himself with emaciated facial expressions bordering between brilliance and madness, had none of the decorative quality of Klimt’s hymns of love, sexuality, and yearning devotion. Instead, Schiele’s work spoke of a brutal honesty, one that would upset and irreversibly change Viennese society. Although his works were later defamed as “degenerate” and for a time were almost forgotten altogether, they influenced generations of artists – from Günter Brus and Francis Bacon to Tracey Emin. Today, his then-misunderstood oeuvre continues to fetch exorbitant prices on the international art market. Presented in a voluminous format that captures all of the intensity and emotional truth of his work, Egon Schiele. The Complete Paintings 1909–1918 features 221 paintings and 146 drawings that retrace the fertile last decade of Schiele’s life. With many pieces newly photographed for this edition, these works are paired with excerpts from his countless writings and poems, as well as essays introducing his life and oeuvre, to situate the Austrian master in the context of European Expressionism and trace his extraordinary legacy.Trade Review“The definitive work on Schiele’s cosmos.” * Frankfurter Rundschau *“Schiele’s daringly explicit drawings are so immaculately reproduced that you could cut them out and frame them.” * The Times *“Schiele fans will love it.” * The Spectator *

Silvana Leonardo da Vinci, Painter: The Complete Works
Book SynopsisOffers an exhaustive account of this unique human, artistic and intellectual adventure through a comprehensive and up-to-date art historical analysis of Leonardo's work. Accompanied by spectacular illustrations. In the Quattrocento, an era when the representation of the human figure was dominated by timeless images based on Botticelli's example, Leonardo worked with light and colour to achieve a modelling that would restore three-dimensionality to the face and soften the rigours of perspective in a misty landscape, no longer a mere backdrop but a vivid pictorial transposition of careful scientific studies and refined psychological analyses. In Leonardo's pictures, it is the changing atmospheric conditions that complement and breathe life into the delicate rendering of the forms and the emotional experiences of the subjects. Thus the artist created powerfully expressive religious pictures and secular portraits that have a modern and disquieting quality in which the faces are true 'windows of the soul', highlighting a silent psychological dialogue between the painting's subject and the observer. Artistic innovations are sustained by a new sensitivity, as well as by study of the refraction of colour, to which much space is dedicated in the Florentine master's theoretical writings. The present book offers an exhaustive account of this unique human, artistic, and intellectual adventure through a comprehensive and up-to-date art historical analysis of Leonardo's work accompanied by spectacular illustrations.Table of ContentsContents: Introduction; Biography; Gallery.

Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Eric Ravilious: Imagined Realities
Book SynopsisA collection of illustrations showcasing many previously unpublished paintings of the artist Eric Ravilious. Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) is now firmly one of the most popular artists of his period. He was a painter of watercolours and murals, a book illustrator in wood engraving and lithography, and a designer of transfer-ware pottery. He applied a dry and precise style of working to imaginative and romantic subject matter from the world around him and from his imaginative transformations of the art and imagery of the past. From 1940, he was an Official War Artist, painting memorable pictures of ships, aircraft and coastal defences before his tragic death in a flying accident off Iceland. This book includes illustrations of many previously unpublished paintings, including a number from private collections, as well as surveying his other artistic activities. The text also draws on many letters and other documents, again previously unpublished, and is the most comprehensive account of Ravilious' career ever published. It positions the artist in relation to the English art of his time, and more recent critical and cultural issues. The book accompanied a centenary exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, London.Table of ContentsForeword Introduction Murals Illustration Design Watercolours War Paintings Conclusion: Imagined and Imaginal Realities Notes Plates Bibliography Catalogue Chronology Acknowledgements Lenders

What we might expect to be its show-stealing splendour is almost upstaged by the pure-white peonies, lilies and roses all around. The eyes of its furled-up tail, though beautiful, blend into the background as though they were another flower.

Book SynopsisKeep the page in your book with this gorgeous pack of 10 foiled bookmarks, printed on both sides, with a silky ribbon and featuring artwork by Gustav Klimt. Although better-known for his portraits, Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) also achieved great acclaim for his landscape art. A symphony of grey, orange and green, this unforgettable autumn landscape painting appears poised to transcend its figurative function altogether. The flattening of perspective in so many of Klimt’s woodland scenes is often said to result from his use of a ‘viewfinder’ (if no more than a cut-out cardboard frame) in composing scenes.

Born in Walthamstow, Essex, William Morris was an outstanding character of many talents, being an architect, writer, social campaigner, artist and, with his Kelmscott Press, an important figure of the Arts and Crafts movement. Many of us probably know him best, however, from his superb furnishings and textile designs, intricately weaving together natural motifs in a highly stylized two-dimensional fashion influenced by medieval conventions.
