  • Hirmer Verlag Agnes Pelton

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe spiritually inspired pictures of Agnes Pelton (1881–1961) have their roots in the desert of California, a place where the artist settled in 1932 and where she lived until her death. She wrote of her highly symbolic paintings that her pictures were “like little windows”, which opened up a view into the interior, her “message of light to the world”. In the 1920s Agnes Pelton started to explore abstract painting, because this offered her the possibility of translating esoteric topics into pictures as well as interpreting earth and light in a spiritual way. Like her fellow-artist Georgia O’Keeffe, Pelton deliberately turned her back on the art scene of the East Coast. She was celebrated for her abstract compositions: “… it is simply an oasis of beauty for the eye”, was how American Art News eulogised her work. After her death Pelton’s work disappeared from the public focus for a long time; today her important artistic contribution to American modernism is acknowledged once more.

Book SynopsisBest known for his iconic print Under the Wave off Kanagawa, also known as the Great Wave, Katsushika Hokusai was a revolutionary printmaker. His mastery of ukiyo-e in the nineteenth century has inspired generations of artists since, and his works exposed the world to the delicate beauty and power of Japanese woodblock technique. In addition to his remarkable artistic output, Hokusai was also a dedicated teacher who sought to pass down his deep understanding of color and painting to practicing artists through immensely detailed written tutorials. Here, for the first time in centuries, are excerpts from his manuals, many available for the first time in English. It is an invaluable insight into the psyche of a true master, and a rare personal account of an artist’s life during a fascinating period in Japan’s history. Connecting Hokusai’s prints from the Edo period to manga, author Ryoko Matsuba foregrounds Hokusai’s contributions to Japanese creative expression from the 1800s to today. Also included in this book: Vincent Van Gogh’s letter about Hokusai’s Great Wave and the contemporary artist Ikeda Manabu’s concise observations about Hokusai’s lasting influence.

As well as beautiful designs, it has great guides for choosing your stones, selecting tools and materials, painting techniques, and creating your own designs. Perfect for beginners, but still plenty to offer those with experience. -- Elizabeth Staunton Acheson * Customer Review *This book it a work of art! I loved looking through the different designs. The colours and art work are truly fantastic. It made me very inspired to try it myself, which I did! It was lots of fun trying some of the suggested ideas and teqniques from the many wonderful ones shown and explained in the book. The author goes into great detail into the designs and teqniques she has used which make it easy to follow. I only had basic acrylic paints and brushes and I produced a few designs I didn't think I'd be capable of, I even had my children involved. My 11 year old daughter found it very interesting and took time to study the book to get some ideas of what she wanted to paint. Fantastic book for any craft lover to have on their book shelf to look through over and over again as I will do! -- Kelly Raven * Customer Review *This is a beautiful book. It went into much greater detail than I expected from a book about painting stones. The book starts with a detailed history and explanation of mandalas and then talks you through tools materials and patterns. Each design has clear easy to follow step by step instructions. Projects are ranked by skill level so this book would suit a complete beginner to someone more experienced. I am already gathering supplies to begin creating my own mandala stones. The book would make a lovey gift as would the finished stones. -- Sarah Gage * Customer Review *This is a beautiful book. It went into much greater detail than I expected from a book about painting stones. The book starts with a detailed history and explanation of mandalas and then talks you through tools materials and patterns. Each design has clear easy to follow step by step instructions. My daughter is 11 and able to follow the designs well. She feels so proud of herself. Would recommend -- Pam Headland * Customer Review *This book is bursting with ideas and tips on how to paint your own mandala stones. Given that I live near a beach this is something I've often fancied trying but didn't know where to start and the finished products make lovely gifts or decoration for the garden. Mandala Stones book is an item I think would make a perfect gift for anyone looking to take up a new hobby or who is interested in arts and crafts, it's even great for children (although some of the designs would need some practice for younger children). I've no doubt I'll be spending many a summer with my son looking for the perfect stones to paint. -- Hazel Christopher * Customer Review *lovely inspirational book. with great designs. easy to understand instructions. patterns that could be adapted to be created out of other crafting material. love this book. -- Tina Youell * Customer Review *Very informative with a wide range of patterns and colours used. -- @iamjustme2017 * Customer Review *Autumn 2017, Issue 3 What a great book! It's full of colour and a nice fairly big format. Basically find your stone (larger than a pebble would be great), ask permission (check the local regulations and check with the stone!) then paint a simple but beautiful design on it and place it on display, or on your altar. You are given guidance on all the materials and tools required: the author then gives us 50 designs with plans on how to approach creating them. For example there's a Lightburst and Fibonacci Glow - they're not as intricate as buddist mandalas but they are all basically circular and very pleasing on the eye. * Cynus Review *

  • Alastair Gordon – Quodlibet

Anomie Publishing Alastair Gordon – Quodlibet

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisAlastair Gordon (b.1978, Edinburgh), is an artist based in London. This, the first major monograph of the artist’s career, includes over 160 paintings, drawings and documentational photographs, along with notes by Gordon himself. The book introduces this accomplished and engaging new voice in British painting.Gordon’s paintings bring the historic languages of genre painting and the quodlibet into a contemporary discourse that pushes the boundaries of realism, figuration and illusionism to focus on everyday moments. His work often elevates seemingly ordinary objects – feathers, matchsticks, postcards – allowing them to speak to wider concerns of beauty, truth, life and death. The documented works, produced between 2012 and 2023, include paintings made in oil or acrylic on MDF, wood, ‘found’ wood, gesso panel, paper, canvas and occasionally linen. Each is distinctive for its style and for the recurring motifs Gordon selects such as masking tape, paper ephemera and repeated, subtly different studies of the same subject. Gordon’s texts describe how objects found mud larking on the banks of the River Thames, shoes from the London City Mission and rags and papers discarded from art students’ studios have been depicted in paintings, incorporating the histories and stories of each item (and each person) into his work. The book also features recent works influenced by rural landscapes and parkland. An introduction by Julia Lucero, Associate Director of Nahmad Projects, London, emphasises the importance of nature and of meditation within Gordon’s practice. Specifically, Lucero brings out the idea of the ‘axis mundi, that metaphysical and mystical connecting point where heaven meets Earth’. She explores the significance of quodlibet, a seventeenth-century trompe-l’oeil painting technique that Gordon favours, rendering brushstrokes invisible and affording everyday objects new significance, even ‘profound value’. Humble objects such as a matchstick or paper aeroplane might be elevated to the realms of the divine. An essay by Jorella Andrews, Professor of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London, describes the influence of Gordon’s time on a research residency in the former studio of Paul Cézanne at Les Lauves on the outskirts of Aix-en-Provence. His experiences there proved pivotal to the direction of his practice, in which both the ‘visual misdirection’ of quodlibet and the qualities of wood have become central. Andrews brings art historical texts and works of art into relation with Gordon’s paintings, making comparisons between subject, form and approach. Andrews’ text further details the recent synthesis of two sides of Gordon’s work: precise illusionism combined with looser observations made in the natural landscape.Edited by Alastair Gordon Studio, designed by Herman Lelie, printed by EBS Verona and published in 2023 by Anomie Publishing, London, the publication has been generously supported by Howard and Roberta Ahmanson through Fieldstead and Company.Alastair Gordon (b. 1978, Edinburgh) is an artist working with painting, drawing and installation, based in London. Gordon received his BA from Glasgow School of Art and his MA from Wimbledon School of Art, London. His work has been shown in recent solo exhibitions at Ahmanson Gallery in Irvine, California (2017), Aleph Contemporary, London (Quodlibet (2021) and Without Borders (2020)) and in the group exhibition Unpacking Gainsborough (2021) at Cynthia Corbett Gallery, London.

Harriet Backer’s richly coloured interior scenes, sensitive portrayals of simple rural life, her portraits and still lifes are characterised by plein-air painting, realism and Impressionism. • Edvard Munch: Magic of the North

Hirmer Verlag Edvard Munch: Magic of the North

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMunch’s pictorial worlds – the initial impetus for modernism Edvard Munch’s radical modernity in painting was a challenge for his contemporaries. This applied in particular to the art scene in Berlin around 1900 which the Norwegian Symbolist artist influenced profoundly. In return, he received support there and was able to continue to develop his work. The publication is lavishly illustrated and describes knowledgeably the story of Munch and Berlin. In 1892 the Association of Berlin Artists invited the still-unknown Edvard Munch (1863–1944) to an exhibition. The public was shocked by the colourful, sketch-like pictures. The artist enjoyed the furore and moved to the city on the Spree, where he repeatedly sojourned until 1908. Here he learned the techniques for printed graphics and presented for the first time paintings in several continuous series which would become central to his oeuvre. In Berlin, before long, the concept of the “Magic of the North” (Stefan Zweig) was no longer associated with romantic or naturalistic fjord landscapes, but with Munch’s psychologically concentrated pictorial worlds.

  • Rembrandt

    Taschen GmbH Rembrandt

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisRembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) never left his homeland of the Netherlands but in his massive body of painting, drawing, and etching, he changed the course of Western art. His prolific oeuvre encompasses religious, historical, and secular scenes, as well as one of the most extraordinary series of portraits and self-portraits in history. Rembrandt’s work foregrounds texture, light, and acute observation. Like sudden, startling apparitions in a shadowy street, his subjects are illuminated against deep, dark backgrounds and rendered with immense physical as well as psychological scrutiny. Whether biblical or mythological figures, powerful patrons, or fellow citizens, each subject is bestowed not only with meticulous facial features but also with the intrigue of thoughts and feelings so that even age-old narratives such as the bible story of David and Bathsheba find a new level of human drama. Rembrandt also left one of the most extensive series of self-portraits of any artist, chronicling his own face from his youth to the year of his death. Rembrandt’s rise coincided with the blossoming of the Dutch Golden Age, an era of prosperity in the Netherlands. He was encouraged by wealthy patrons, but was above all driven by a profound fascination with people. In this book, we tour some of Rembrandt’s key paintings, etchings, and drawings to introduce his techniques, inspirations, and exceptional achievements. From the Baroque Belshazzar’s Feast to the world-famous Night Watch we uncover a world of deep, rich tones, masterful draftsmanship, and a remarkable sensitivity for the human condition.

  • The Sea Painters World

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Sea Painters World

Book SynopsisThis timely follow-up to Conway''s highly successful Marine Art of Geoff Hunt (2004) presents the considerable artistic output of Britain''s leading marine painter since 2003. This new volume is heavily illustrated with images ranging from large paintings to sketchbook drawings with text written by the artist himself. The new book reflects Hunt''s developing career during a time in which he served a five-year term as President of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, worked on large-scale paintings such as the definitive Mary Rose, and also completed numerous outdoor sketches and paintings. The book is divided into six sections: 1. The Sea Painter''s World, an introduction to the artist''s studio work at Merton Place, London and his plein air work on the River Thames; 2. Home Waters; 3. The Mediterranean; 4. In the Wake of Nelson; 5. North America and 6. The West Indies and Beyond. This concept sets Geoff''s work in a broadly geographical context, showcasing the artist''s freer plein airTrade ReviewAnother magnificent volume of the work of one of the undisputed foremost maritime artists of our own time, well-known to many of our readers, this one covering many of Geoff Hunt’s recent paintings. The last time I had the pleasure of receiving a volume of his paintings was three years ago, the book written and produced together with Brian Lavery on HMS Surprise, containing all the cover paintings of the Patrick O’Brian books as well as a wealth of others. This new book covers Geoff Hunt’s work since then as well as some earlier paintings. In contrast to the HMS Surprise volume, there is greater diversity of subject here. Though the artist’s home period is clearly that of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, we are taken right back to the 16th century with his definitive study of the Mary Rose based on all the researched information now available (culminating in his now well-known 2009 painting reproduced in the book) and right up to the present day HMS Bulwark at the International Fleet review on 28th June 2005, HMS Dragon building at VT Portsmouth and HMS Ark Royal in drydock at Portsmouth in May 2009. Modern sail and port scenes are covered as well. Not only is this book as stunning as one would expect for the many beautifully reproduced paintings, but it also affords an insight into the creative processes of the marine artist himself. It takes us through his sources, right back to the 16th Century Anthony Rolls in the case of the Mary Rose painting and research, to preliminary and developing sketches for the final painting and into the artist’s studio itself. Several chapters are written as case studies of the evolution of final works of art; apart from HMS Bulwark and Mary Rose we have ‘The Mediterranean – Case Study III : Jack Aubrey’s Port Mahon in 1800’; ‘In the Wake of Admiral Nelson – Case Study IV : The Battle of the Nile’; ‘North America – Case Study V : Chasing the Rainbow’ and similar. There are several subjects here of particular interest to American members, such as the CSS Alabama sailing from Cherbourg in June 1864 to fight the USS Kearsage and a fine study of the big Humphreys frigate USS United States making passage in a good sailing breeze under all plain sail. Then, ‘Under Fire off Manhattan’, ‘Ranger Goes a-Roving’, ‘Hancock and Fox’, ‘The USS Chesapeake leaving Boston Harbor’, finally ‘USS Constitution at the Battle of Tripoli 1804’ and the cover painting for James Nelson’s The Continental Risque. Trafalgar is to the fore, and the subsequent Strachan’s Action. Our readers will have noticed that Jack Aubrey is still very much in evidence, but so is Hornblower, with ‘HMS Hotspur off Brest 1803’; ‘Dangerous waters: HMS Renown; HMS Lydia hove down and refitting in the Pacific and ‘HMS Sutherland’s Last Battle’. There are many more fascinating subjects, from racing tea clippers (The Great Tea Race of 1866’) to WWI battlecruisers (‘HMS Indomitable entering Grand Harbour, Valetta’). The cover image depicts Sir George Collier’s Squadron in Penobscot Bay, 14th August 1779 Another beautiful book to treasure, from Conway’s excellent production team and from one of the very foremost maritime artists working today, the incomparable Geoff Hunt. -- Roger Marsh * Historical Naval Fiction *

Taschen GmbH Monet. The Triumph of Impressionism

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisNo other artist, apart from J. M. W. Turner, tried as hard as Claude Monet (1840–1926) to capture light itself on canvas. Of all the Impressionists, it was the man Cézanne called “only an eye, but my God what an eye!” who stayed true to the principle of absolute fidelity to the visual sensation, painting directly from the object. It could be said that Monet reinvented the possibilities of color. Whether it was through his early interest in Japanese prints, his time as a conscript in the dazzling light of Algeria, or his personal acquaintance with the major painters of the late 19th century, the work Monet produced throughout his long life would change forever the way we perceive both the natural world and its attendant phenomena. The high point of his explorations was the late series of water lilies, painted in his own garden at Giverny, which, in their approach toward almost total formlessness, are really the origin of abstract art. This biography does full justice to this most remarkable and profoundly influential artist, and offers numerous reproductions and archive photos alongside a detailed and insightful commentary.Trade Review“This is the only readily available publication that gives a complete record of Monet’s work—in other words, it is definitive.” * The Good Book Guide *

THE ARTIST. With a high horizon, the foreground dominates this oil painting, creating a sense of a vast expanse of poppies. Although this subject was explored by Claude Monet (1840–1926) and Auguste Renoir (1841–1919), stylistically it is extremely different from Impressionism. The tightly packed poppies provide detail, while the elevated view displays the whole landscape. THE FINAL WORD. As William Morris said, "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."

Book SynopsisTrade Review"Now published in English for the first time, Weill’s fast-paced and punchy account of her gallery’s first 25 years of exhibitions is a who’s who of emerging artists in early-twentieth century Paris, the collectors who bought their work, and how much they paid. . . .She paints a clear portrait of how modern masters like Metzinger and Matisse, alongside lesser known painters like Émilie Charmy, shook up modern art and modern culture even before there was a market for their work." -- Maggie Taft * Booklist *"The overall message of Pow! is one of resistance in the face of an elitist, male-dominated art world." -- Alex Greenberger * ARTnews *"This welcome publication, handily digestible in its trim size, includes a number of useful sections and contextual aids to shepherd the reader through the colourful and subjective reality of Weill’s Paris. . . . Written in French punny slang, and admirably translated by Rodarmor . . . one is reminded that translators have an important, and under-explored, role to play in current art market studies, introducing narratives and historical characters to wider, critical audiences, and thereby enabling an enriched pan-European and trans-Atlantic narrative. . . . What Weill was good at was making history, and Pow! admirably demonstrates how." * Modernist Review *"This is a charming, lovingly produced book that makes it clear that despite the 'aesthetic revolution of eye-catching splendor' that defied the ordinary, the fickleness of art, 'too subject to the whims of speculation,' took years to make a dent in." * Enchanted Prose *“Pow! Right in the Eye! reveals the visionary trajectory of Berthe Weill’s life and work. Incredibly open to taking risks, Weill exhibited many of the twentieth century’s greatest artists while they were still early in their careers. This wonderful book is an urgent protest against forgetting this great gallerist and her journey of endless experimentation.” -- Hans Ulrich Obrist, Serpentine Galleries, London“Berthe Weill changed the course of art history. With her memoir, a fantastically idiosyncratic and idiomatic adventure that is part confession and part invective, she rewrites that hallowed history as a telling corrective that anyone who cares about art, then and now, needs to read. Every twist and turn here reveals far more than simply an in-the-trenches account of the difficulties of presenting the young and new to an indifferent world—it is a stunningly humble self-portrait of the extreme disadvantages faced by an underprivileged Jewish woman confronting the issues of class, anti-Semitism, and sexism, as elegant and sturdy as Picasso’s famous portrait of her." -- Carlo McCormick, critic and curator“Berthe Weill’s compelling memoir is a raucous and often humorous saga of a courageous champion of avant-garde art in Paris during the early twentieth century. The story of the first gallery dedicated to contemporary emerging artists—founded by a woman amidst a market-driven, all male art world—continues to resonate strongly to this day.” -- Paula Cooper, Paula Cooper GalleryTable of ContentsForeword by Julie Saul and Lynn Gumpert Translator’s Note: “Wrestling with Weill” by William Rodarmor Introduction: “The Marvel of Montmartre” by Marianne Le Morvan Pow! Book SynopsisFew paintings inspire the kind of intense study and speculation as Garden of Earthly Delights, the world famous triptych by Netherlandish master Hieronymus Bosch. The painting has been interpreted as a heretical masterpiece, an opulent illustration of the Creation and a premonition of the end of the world. In this book, renowned art historian Hans Belting offers a radical reinterpretation of the work, which he sees not as apocalyptic, but utopian, portraying how the world would exist had the Fall not happened. Taking readers through each panel, Belting discusses various schools of thought and explores Bosch's life and times. This fascinating study is an important contribution to the literature and theory surrounding one of the world's most enigmatic artists.

Book SynopsisA key figure in the international avant-garde, Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) was at once an extraordinary painter and leading art theoretician whose influence resonates to this day. Coining the term “Neo-plasticism”, he pursued a style of painting composed only of primary colors against a grid of black vertical and horizontal lines and a white base background. Mondrian’s vision was that this essential painting would help to achieve a society in which art as such has no place, but rather exists for the total realization of “beauty.” With stints in Amsterdam, Paris, London, and New York, Mondrian drew upon the modern metropolis and modern music, especially jazz, as points of inspiration. In 1917, he cofounded De Stijl, originally a publication, and subsequently a circle of practitioners, committed to a strictly geometrical art of horizontals and verticals. With key works and succinct texts, this introductory book presents Mondrian's distinctive and pioneering oeuvre, an abiding inspiration for fashion, art, architecture, and design, from White Stripes album covers to Yves Saint Laurent dresses. 2016 © US Mondrian/Holtzman Trust

Book SynopsisAs inviting and sensual as a warm summer day, this opulent exhibition catalog offers a deep appreciation of Klimt's ornate, exquisitely detailed, and atmospheric landscape paintings. For the last twenty years of his career, Gustav Klimt devoted considerable energy to painting landscapes during his summer vacations-and these bucolic scenes became some of his most sought-after pictures. Filled with vibrant high-quality reproductions and featuring engaging essays by leading scholars in the field, this exhibition catalog situates Klimt's landscapes alongside fin-de-sie cle fashion, photography, and decorative arts of the Wiener Werksta tte in particular. Klimt's landscapes are examined within the context of his larger oeuvre and traces the evolution of his style: from one informed by the academic tradition, to his ornate "golden style" decorative approach influenced by the ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk, and then to a more painterly manner of working in pure color. The book also considers Klimt's relationship with his muse, fashion designer Emilie Flo ge; his deep engagement with the Viennese avant-garde; and the specific techniques he employed to achieve mesmerizing, harmonious works that literally shimmer with light and color.

Book SynopsisConsidered one of the most important figures in German art of the nineteenth century, Caspar David Friedrich is best known for his dramatic and emotional paintings, which often feature contemplative figures, sweeping landscapes, and an emphasis on the sublime and the spiritual. This book takes a chronological approach to Friedrich’s career, beginning with his early years producing traditional religious and historical scenes. It explores his innovative use of light and color, and his unprecedented treatment of the landscape as a living, dynamic entity, rather than simply as a backdrop or setting for other subjects. The beautifully reproduced works and details in this volume help readers appreciate the astounding qualities of Friedrich’s works: his palette of muted, atmospheric colors; swirling clouds, dramatic mountains, and turbulent seas; and subtle changes in light and shadow that occur throughout the day. Readers will come away with a renewed appreciation for Friedrich’s portrayals of the natural world and the unique and provocatively emotive qualities of his work.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAgnes Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist will be the first survey of this under recognized American painter in over 22 years. Her distinctive paintings could be described as metaphysical landscapes rooted in the California desert near Cathedral City. Pelton chiefly drew on her own inspirations, superstitions, and beliefs to exemplify emotional states. The publication seeks to clarify the artist’s significance and role within the cannon of American Modernism but also against the legacy of European abstraction. It contextualizes her work against her contemporaries, Marsden Hartley and Georgia O’Keeffe, and their distinct versions of American spiritual modernism. Pelton’s highly symbolic paintings were inspired by religious sources ranging from Theosophy and Agni Yoga to the spiritual teachings of Dane Rudhyar and Will Levington Comfort. Over three decades she devoted herself to painting spiritual abstractions, which conveyed her “light message to the world.”
