  • Expressionism

    Taschen GmbH Expressionism

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisSharp angles, strange forms, lurid colors, and distorted perspectives are classic hallmarks of Expressionism, the twentieth century movement that prioritized emotion over objective reality. Though particularly present in Germany and Austria, the movement’s approach flourished internationally and is today hailed as one of the most influential shifts in art history. With leading groups Die Brücke (The Bridge) and Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), and key players such as Wassily Kandinsky, Egon Schiele, and Emil Nolde, the Expressionists disowned Impressionism, which they regarded as “man lowered to the position of a gramophone record of the outer world”, to depict instead a raw and visceral experience of life as it was felt, rather than seen on the surface. Their paintings brim with emotive force, conveyed in particular through intense and non-naturalistic color palettes, loose brushwork, and thick textures. Covering the group’s stylistic tendencies, influences, and most important protagonists, this introductory book explores the Expressionist panorama of moods, ideas, and emotions and their abiding quest for deep authenticity.Trade Review“This comprehensive overview incorporates an impressive range of reproductions.” * The Independent *

Book SynopsisThe painting collections in the state museums of Florence are unequalled for their quality, historical significance, and for the sheer number of works; never before have they been presented in a publication of such splendid technical quality. The Uffizi, the Palatine Gallery, the Accademia, and the other national collections—to which the Contini Bonacossi donation and the works recovered by Rodolfo Siviero have recently been added—constitute the greatest museum complex in the world. It is a complex unified by its history, closely tied at first to the Medici family, who were originally patrons and benefactors but who later, as their political power waned, came to be characterized as collectors and preservers of heritage. These museums bear witness to the Florentine supremacy in the arts that was established by Cosimo I with the invaluable assistance of Vincenzo Borghini and of Giorgio Vasari.

Book SynopsisThe arresting pictures of Frida Kahlo (1907–54) were in many ways expressions of trauma. Through a near-fatal road accident at the age of 18, failing health, a turbulent marriage, miscarriage and childlessness, she transformed the afflictions into revolutionary art. In literal or metaphorical self-portraiture, Kahlo looks out at the viewer with an audacious glare, rejecting her destiny as a passive victim and rather intertwining expressions of her experience into a hybrid real-surreal language of living: hair, roots, veins, vines, tendrils and fallopian tubes. Many of her works also explore the Communist political ideals which Kahlo shared with her husband Diego Rivera. The artist described her paintings as “the most sincere and real thing that I could do in order to express what I felt inside and outside of myself.” This book introduces the rich body of Kahlo’s work to explore her unremitting determination as an artist, and her significance as a painter, feminist icon, and a pioneer of Latin American culture.

Its full of advice on materials techniques and helpful tips. Wendy gives some useful help on playing with acrylics and shows us just how versatile a medium the can be – we can use them as watercolours, as oils and also use a variety of different techniques to create interesting and unusual effects. She shows us some of her paintings and explains which techniques she used to achieve the final effects and also gives us two detailed step by step demonstrations using many of the points she has already outlined. David continues with solutions to the popular comments that acrylics dry too quickly or are not subtle enough. He tells us just how great they are because they can be used in many different ways on a variety of surfaces. In his section of the book he covers Landscapes and gives us a brief but important overview of composition using two photographs of the same subject to use to create a compositionally pleasing painting. He further illustrates his comments by way of showing his own paintings and how the eye is lead into and round the painting by way of composition. He shows us the most useful colours for painting landscapes and gives hints on using Tone and Colour. This is followed by three detailed demonstrations, each accompanied by other of his works showing what he wants to achieve in each. Carol Massey then covers flowers. She shares her expertise giving advice on colours, drawing flowers and how to place flowers to create paintings that have an interesting composition. Carols advice covers how to use acrylics as watercolours and the benefits of this and how to use them impasto in knife paintings. Flower colours can be difficult to get right and she shows us her favourite colours and gives advice on how to mix and what colours to use to suit different types of flower. I found her advice on thinking of flower heads as simple geometric shapes very useful, simplifying what can seem a daunting task. She shares some of her own paintings and some thoughts about how and why she chose the methods she used. These are followed by three demonstrations using some of the techniques she has explained. Wendy then introduces a final section on the many and varied techniques that can be used with acrylics to create interesting and realistic textural effects. This book brings together in one place some useful material from other books in the leisure arts series. For artists it gives a valuable insight into different ways of working with acrylics, showing how useful and versatile a medium they can be and how wide ranging their potential is. * JeannieZelos.com *Table of ContentsMaterials Painting with acrylics My palette My sketchbook Colour mixing Playing with acrylics Painting skies Sunlit window step-by-step Farmyard step-by-step Landscapes in acrylics Composition Colours for landscape Creating depth Seasons Distant mountains step by step Still water step by step Ancient tree step by step Flowers in acrylics Flower colours Flower shapes & drawing Composition for flowers Tone Techniques for flowers Primulas step by step Rose arch step by step Stargazer lilies step by step Creative acrylic techniques Creative techniques Creating texture Applying techniques Lilac blooms step-by-step Seascape step-by-step Index

  • Dalí

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisPainter, sculptor, writer, filmmaker, and all-round showman Salvador Dalí (1904–1989) was one of the 20th century’s greatest exhibitionists and eccentrics. One of the first artists to apply the insights of Freudian psychoanalysis to art, he is celebrated in particular for his surrealist practice, with such conceits as the soft watches or the lobster telephone, now hallmarks of the surrealist enterprise, and of modernism in general. Dalí frequently described his paintings as “hand-painted dream photographs.” Their tantalizing tension and interest resides in the precise rendering of bizarre elements and incongruous arrangements. As Dalí himself explained, he painted with “the most imperialist fury of precision,” but only “to systematize confusion and thus to help discredit completely the world of reality.”Revolutionizing the role of the artist, the mustache-twirling Dalí also had the intuition to parade a controversial persona in the public arena and, through printmaking, fashion, advertising, writing, and film, to create work that could be consumed and not just contemplated on a gallery wall. This book explores both the painting and the personality of Dalí, introducing his technical skill as well as his provocative compositions and challenging themes of death, decay, and eroticism.

  • Abstracts: 50 Inspirational Projects

Search Press Ltd Abstracts: 50 Inspirational Projects

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisWhere do you find inspiration for an abstract painting? How do you start? What materials should you use? Are composition and perspective important? These questions and others are answered in detail in this impressive book, with a clarity that guarantees success. Whether you want to purely abstract your ideas, thoughts and feelings into colour and mood, or whether you want to base your pictures on subjects that interest you, such as landscapes, flowers, or music, you will find much to guide and fascinate you here. Rolina van Vliet is an enthusiastic teacher, and she offers a brilliant insight into what makes good paintings, with 50 stunning projects, each accompanied by expert tips and a full palette of exciting and fun techniques. With help on what materials to use and how to use them, she includes many photographs illustrating different ways to create smooth, textured, collaged, vibrant, powerful and atmospheric abstract art. Beginners will love the way Rolina encourages experimentation - there are no rules, and more experienced artists will find much here to inspire them.Trade ReviewThis is a nice change of direction in the literature of abstract painting. When it comes to abstracts, it's the ideas behind the work that mainly count and it's difficult to come up with a strictly instructional approach because you're not simply representing a subject but interpreting it and, if you don't have something to say, there's not really any point in even getting started. However, there are various muscles you can develop and working from a set of ideas and exercises based on what other artists have done will help you get the idea of where you're supposed to be going and how you might get there. Rolina has come up with a good range of approaches such as the interplay of lines, monochrome working, even painting from photographs and to music. This latter is something that's cropped up before and is an intriguing idea - you use a favourite piece to put yourself in a specific frame of mind and then simply (well, I say, "simply") transfer that creativity to paper. As well as the projects, Rolina has some useful comments on where you might look for sources of inspiration and, in her conclusion, a list of do's and don'ts that every artist should have taped to their studio wall.-Artbookreview.net Abstract art can be a notoriously difficult genre to teach but experienced tutor Rolina van Vliet begins with a very positive statement of intent in this, her third book on the subject. Posing the question, 'Why paint in the abstract style?', she underlines the benefits of working in this way, from the joy of interpretation to the freedom from rigid techniques. Nevertheless, she still provides a very organised framework for developing your skills - each of the 50 subsequent projects list what materials you need and which skills you can acquire.-Artists & Illustrators This book follows Rolinas two very successful and acclaimed previous books on abstract painting and covers the questions so often asked what shall I paint and How shall I paint it. Until I began painting myself I rarely appreciated abstract art having seen too much of the "throw some paint at a canvas and call it an abstract" type of works. Sadly there's still a lot of that type around but with books such as these by Rolina hopefully people who are interested in art will take time to learn a more disciplined and structured approach. Rolina has developed a theory and background of abstract painting that she has outlined in her previous books and in this one she puts some of those ideas into practice devising exercises to hone the skills learned by the student from them. The first third of the book is full of ideas to make us think about what we want to paint and how to approach it. Rolina explains how to see abstractly - many paintings are actually based around pictorial elements that the artist then looks for the abstract in them - very different to the throw paint and see method that I talked about earlier. Through thinking about external influences we begin to process the ideas for a painting - Rolina gives us some guidelines on how to develop these ideas by way of questioning ourselves, what colour combinations do we want to use, what shapes and lines are we planning, will we add texture, will this be totally abstract or will elements of the original idea be visible. She explains all this is important preparatory work to create a pleasing and successful painting. She covers sources of inspiration, picture elements and colours, and texture and technique - al these are covered in more detail in earlier books but for the purpose of this book a brief overview is given. The projects themselves are broken down into specific elements - study task, materials, picture elements, techniques, and composition. In this way Rolina gives the basics of the project accompanied by an illustration of some she has created using each method and yet the final project will be the students own work. Most of the projects are accompanied by useful study tips that will be helpful when the student branches out entirely on their own work. I really enjoy Rolinas books - they are packed full of helpful and easy to follow ideas. I think anyone new to abstract works will find that they are in fact far more structured than usually believed and whether you are an artist want to learn to create your own abstract works or simply have a love of art and want to learn to appreciate the work involved in abstract paintings this book is a winner.-JeannieZelos.com Have you always wanted to try abstract painting but are not sure where to start? There is surely more to it than just the random application of paint - yes there is, and here is a whole book of ideas for the beginner abstract artist. This is essentially a very hands-on book filled with projects to try an approach which I personally think works very well indeed. At the outset the author explains how abstract art has its roots in the figurative, but ideas are expressed in a freer manner. She discusses concepts, line, color, inspiration and more before the main section of the book, which is where you can find the projects. Most of these involve acrylics rather than any other paint type, which suits the modern style and which are very versatile. Try your hand at playing with lines, mixed media, collage, depicting organic forms, emulating Picasso, using newspaper cuttings and many more. Each study has simple instructions and ideas to try along with an example and the studies number fifty. After these there are a hundred one-line ideas to try, such as creating an image to go with the last book you read, using a paper ball to make textures and making a Matisse-style paper cutout collage. All of these ideas are sure to free up the imagination and produce some vibrant and interesting work, so if you want to have a go at this style of art then this is a good book to start with. You do need some basic art history knowledge first in order to know the work of named artists, but as all these are well known this should not pose a problem for many artists.-Myshelf.com Abstraction is not as often discussed in art guides as figurative painting. Given its subjectivity, abstraction is inherently difficult to teach, but van Vliet ( The Art of Abstract Painting ) commendably spends as much time covering concepts and inspiration as she does technique. The 50 short exercises function well as experimental jumping-off points for readers rather than as finished projects. In these lessons, van Vliet emphasizes process through a wide-ranging, succinct discussion of many different materials. This book will appeal to beginning and intermediate artists who want to try something new.-Library Journal USA

Book SynopsisDiscover how scenes of daily life and delicate dabs of color shocked the art world establishment. In this TASCHEN Basic Art introduction to Impressionism, we explore the artists, subjects, and techniques that first brought the easel out of the studio and shifted artistic attention from history, religion, or portraiture to the evanescent ebb and flow of modern life. As we tour the theaters, bars, and parks of Paris and beyond, we take in the movement’s radical innovations in style and subject, from the principle of plein air painting to the rapid, broken brushwork that allowed the Impressionists to emphasize spontaneity, movement, and the changing qualities of light. We take a close look at their unusual new perspectives and their fresh palette of pure, unblended colors, including many vividly bright shades that brought a whole new level of chromatic intensity to the canvas. Along the way, we recognize Impressionism’s established greats, such as Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, and Camille Pissarro, as well as many associated artists worthy of closer attention, including Marie Bracquemond, Medardo Rosso, and Fritz von Uhde.

Book SynopsisIn the work of Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) lies an impact akin to a sudden acquisition of sight. His landscapes and seascapes scorch the eye with such ravishing light and color, with such elemental force, it is as if the sun itself were gleaming out of the frame. Appropriately known as “the painter of light,” Turner worked in print, watercolor, and oils to transform landscape from serene contemplative scenes to pictures pulsating with life. He anchored his work to the River Thames and to the sea, but in the historical context of the Industrial Revolution, also integrated boats, trains, and other markers of human activity, which juxtaposes the thrust of civilization against the forces of nature. This book covers Turner’s illustrious, wide-ranging repertoire to introduce an artist who combined a traditional genre with a radical modernism.

Book SynopsisToday, the works of Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) are among the most well known and celebrated in the world. In Sunflowers, The Starry Night, Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, and many paintings and drawings beyond, we recognize an artist uniquely dexterous in the portrayal of mood and place through paint, pencil, charcoal, or chalk. Yet as he was deploying the lurid colors, emphatic brushwork, and contoured forms that would subsequently make his name, van Gogh battled not only the disinterest of his contemporary audience but also devastating bouts of mental illness. His episodes of depression and anxiety would eventually claim his life, when, in 1890, he committed suicide shortly after his 37th birthday. This richly illustrated introduction follows Vincent van Gogh’s story from his earliest pictures of peasants and rural workers, through his bright Parisian period, to his final, feverish burst of creative energy in the South of France during the last two and a half years of his life.

Book SynopsisThis book introduces the concept of realistic abstract painting - a loosely impressionistic form of painting that leaves much to the imagination of the viewer. The subject, though recognisable, is executed with freedom and fluidity, resulting in a painting that is far from photographic. It has been described as the 'grey' area between figurative and abstract painting, yet there is nothing dull about this style, as the numerous colourful examples in this book show. Aimed at those with some experience of painting, all the examples in this book use various forms of water-based media, including gouache, acrylics and watercolours. Designed to inspire, this book will stimulate your imagination; encourage you to try out the various methods described; and help you develop your own way of painting in this exciting style.Trade Review'The book is excellent, with a great selection of loosely constructed pictures, teaching us to loosen up and be a lot less literal. Fantastic approach to using colours, most of which are subtle and great explanation about lines with effect of colour. I believe many of us do not quite understand what abstract is, this book gives good examples of which help to grasp the meaning of abstract.' -- Margaret Dunning * International Journal of the Guild of Silk Painters (Issue 97) - Spring 2019 *Dec 12 This book was recommended to me by someone who thought it would suit my style of painting and as I have read it I realise this is actually how I aspire to paint. The book is really about how we approach our work in a looser, more spontaneous and impressionistic way and as I have never wanted to slavishly copy an image, it seemed a good choice for me. I was very heartened to read in the first few pages that the author feels this way of painting is a greater challenge than either realistic or pure abstract work…. something I have been feeling for a long time and so good to read it in black and white!!! The challenges in producing a piece of semi abstract art are fraught with difficulty which is easier to resolve in both realistic and abstract work and it is music to my ears to hear that my struggles have been because I have chosen this way to express myself and this book does go quite a way in resolving some of those difficulties. One interesting quote from the book is something I feel certain you will have all said to yourselves with great frustration……“I am not quite satisfied with this piece of work but I do not know what is wrong with it?” Those would not be my exact words, mine would be far less printable…… but the principle is the same. The author goes on to explain that in almost every case it is a matter of composition rather than lack of technique and execution………and putting into practice the “Principles and Elements” of design and the author then goes on to explain them in quite an enlightening way with useful images to illustrate each point. I mention this as I have read several books which contain chapters on composition and I have found this the easiest to assimilate. Drawing is mentioned, again as a key feature, something I have also come to recognise…… painting in a loose impressionistic way does not remove the need for good drawing skills, even a suggestion of something needs to be the right size in relation to other objects, needs to have the right perspective, and to be able to produce a spontaneous piece of art the artist needs to be able to draw and represent whatever they choose to represent in a way which inspires the viewer’s imagination… done by hinting at something which they can recognise. This is a book I will keep at the side of me when I am embarking on a new piece, apart from being endowed with glorious illustrations from artists such as Viktoria and Slawa Prischedko, Xavier Swolfs, Piet Lap and the author himself to name but a few, it is full of helpful tips and hints and while not really for the beginner (it assumes the reader is well rehearsed in techniques and execution of the media) it is certainly a book for every one of you who would like to loosen up in your style… it is a very encouraging book reinforcing the notion that creating a good painting is a skill which can be taught. * judithfarnworthart.blogspot.co.uk *Feb 11 I confess I hadn't heard of this artist/author/teacher before who is from the Netherlands, after reading this book I would love to attend one of his workshops. To me his paintings portray a sincere love of painting, there is a lot of joy and enthusiastic excitement in the brushstrokes and fluidity of the paint that shines through. As the book is aimed at more experienced painters to challenge and stretch their working methods, rather than beginners, there is a very short discussion at the beginning about colours and materials that might be needed and some examples of techniques. It's almost as a reminder rather than one of those long and laborious explanations that take up vast portions of other books, which personally I find frustrating. The book is aimed at those using water based media although in many ways I think it is useful for all mediums. Rather the majority of the book is used to explain the concepts of seven principles, (unity, contrast, dominance, repetition, variety, balance, and harmony) and seven elements, (line, tone, colour, texture, form, proportion and direction). Each is eloquently explained with lots of illustrations. As a list I would say it is a very useful guideline for analysing and improving your work. The onus of the book is to transform, '...reality by means of elimination and simplification' with reference to these elements and principles. You are encouraged to, 'Paint what you feel, not what you see.' which is a far cry from the 'paint what you see not what you think you see' often chanted at art school. It's not a how to paint book as such but more a how to express what you feel, encouraging you to develop you own self expression in a fluid, gestural and impressionistic way. I see this book as an encouraging bridge between the realms of competent amateur and the first steps to becoming an artist. * seasidestudioblog.blogspot.com *Table of ContentsNumerous colourful examples of works of art by various artists Clear, in-depth descriptions and analysis of realistic abstract painting Includes examples using a wide range of water-based media, including watercolours, gouache and acrylics

Book SynopsisNow available again, this visually stunning collection of Gustav Klimt's landscape paintings brings to light a lesser-known aspect of the Viennese painter's oeuvre. While Gustav Klimt is largely revered for his opulent, symbolladen portraits of the Viennese bourgeoisie, these works were just one aspect of his artistic expression. His landscapes represent an important facet of his career and are a valuable contribution to the school of European nature painting. For many years the artist travelled to the Austrian and Italian countryside during the summer, where he took advantage of the extraordinary light and spectacular hues to paint and sketch landscapes. Among the most exquisite of Klimt's landscapes are those in which he experimented with composition and style. Accompanied by scholarly essays, the images reproduced in this book comprise all extant landscapes from this brilliant artist, proving that his mastery extends beyond portraiture and revealing themes that appeared throughout his life's work.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisKäthe Kollwitz, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Gabriele Münter and Marianne Werefkin are among the exceptional artists associated with the emergence of Expressionism in Germany in the early decades of the 20th century. Each challenged prevailing ideals of feminine identity at a time of great societal change. As women, they were expected to marry and raise a family; some chose to, some did not. As ambitious artists, they wanted to work. As they rose to these challenges, their art further undermined conventions. Their portraits of children symbolise joy, hope and innocence but also melancholy, tension, curiosity, the passing of time and unfulfilled desire. Their radical depictions of the nude wrest the female body away from the male gaze towards a newfound role, expressive of powerful maternity and female subjectivity. These dramatic modernist compositions, with their fluid brushwork and bright hues, push at the boundaries of form, colour and spiritual meaning.

Book SynopsisClear, challenging and inspiring, this book contains instructions for 65 abstract paintings that you can get to work on straight away, with no previous experience. All the basic information relating to picture elements, composition, theme and design is provided at the start of the book, together with an exploration of the meaning of abstract painting, and its importance as a means of self-expression and creativity. Rather than providing step-by-step instructions, each of the exercises consists of information on method, materials, technique, composition, imagery and structure which will direct you to the finished piece while at the same time allowing your creativity to flow.Trade ReviewWinter 2016 Abstract painting is one of life's little mysteries to me, however much I admire and I try I never seem to achieve a satisfactory abstract acceptable maybe but not good. This book gives indicators on approaches to abstract. There are 50 exercises which with a little thought by using gutta, soy wax, dyes, silk tops, and applying scraps of rough textured silk fabrics to smooth Habotai interesting results can be achieved. I would love this for my own collection. This is using 'play' constructively to promote your own individual style. * International Journal of the Guild of Silk Painters *March 09 I’ve always been interested in good abstract work, but have never seen an instruction book as wonderful as yours…It’s obvious that you have put a lot of love and hard work into this fabulous introduction to this exciting, challenging and always playful expression. You have inspired me to kick-start my painting after many years.-Patricia Cramer, South Africa * Customer *Oct 08 This is a book of ideas for working in a purely abstract style, but also one which suggests ways of seeing and working by means of a series of exercises that introduces 65 different approaches. These exercises are the heart of the book and each one is arranged across two pages with a finished painting on the right and, on the left, notes which explain the artist’s intention and the techniques used to achieve it. Abstraction is as much a state of mind and a way of seeing as anything else. It doesn’t really have techniques of application that are any different to conventional painting. so what it comes down to is structure, shape and colour. As such, it’s a difficult subject to teach - and an even more difficult one to teach through a book - because you either understand the mindset behind it or you don’t. If you look at an abstract and think, “my dog could do better than that”, then it’s a reasonable assumption that this is not for you. If, however, you’re intrigued by the subject but don’t feel you know where to start, then this book will help you a long way towards the end of the road. The simple, straightforward, approach removes pretty much all the mystique and the rigidly standardised layout means that you’ll feel at home pretty quickly and won’t have to spend a long time re-acclimatising yourself every time you turn a page. * Artbookreview.net *Table of ContentsIntroduction The abstract method of painting Why abstract What is abstract Our tools The practical side How does it work Primary picture elements Secondary picture elements composition technique and materials theme and project continuing by yourself

It covers its subject thoroughly with clear directions and excellent illustrations. As its name implies, the book is all about the relatively new painting technique of pouring acrylic paint, mixed with a range of mediums, over a surface to produce intriguing abstract creations on a canvas or board. The mediums used are key to the venture as they mix with the paints to help them flow and they also keep colours separate from each other. In addition to the basic gel medium, other substance such as silicone oil can be added – the latter leading to the creation of oil-like cells of colour in the finished work. In addition to precise explanations of the different materials, methods and techniques of paint pouring, there are 16 complete projects, explained and illustrated in detail, that will enable the reader to put theory into practice. One last word of warning, care needs to be taken in setting up the workspace as the motion of pouring paint around will inevitably invite a spillage or two – but what fun acrylic paint pouring can be! -- Mike Pettifor * The SEW Region Magazine - Book Threads *Table of ContentsIntroduction 7 Materials 8 The World of acrylic paints 10 Materials for acrylic pouring 12 Additional materials 17 After pouring 23 Surfaces for acrylic pouring 26 How to start 28 Techniques 30 Mixing the paints 34 Setting up the workspace 36 Projects 38 Dirty Pour 40 Dirty Pour meets Flip Cup 44 Black Beauty 48 Orange Dream 52 Light as a Feather 56 Perfection All Round 60 Pink Cyclone 64 Dream Pair 68 Pull the Strings 72 Crazy Rings of Colour 76 All In One Go 80 Paint Puffball 84 Flower Power 88 Neon Night 92 Colour Bath 96 Double Dirty Cup 100 Index 106 About the author 108 Acknowledgements 109

Book SynopsisLiberation of Colour explores the whole career of Winifred Nicholson with a special emphasis on her theories of colour. Throughout her life, Winifred Nicholson was interested in prisms and rainbows. When she was given some prisms by a physicist friend in the mid-1970s, her painting took on a new direction. Looking through a prism, she saw objects with a rim of prismatic colour. She explored and developed these ideas, often painting pictures that verged on the abstract. Using specific paintings to examine her ideas and writings about colour, the book includes her late 'prismatic' pictures which have never been properly explained. These pictures were a culmination of her life's search to find "form's secret and rhythmic law". She painted them in Greece in 1979, at her home in Cumbria, and during her last painting trip to the Island of Eigg in the Hebrides in 1980, where she had an inspired period of painting and made some of her best-loved pictures. Published on the occasion of the exhibition Liberation of Colour at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, the book illustrates many previously unseen paintings from private collections, as well as some of Nicholson's best known works. It also draws on new research, including previously unseen archival material.Table of ContentsDirectors’ Foreword Liberation of Colour Catalogue Sparks of Light The Abstract View of Colour Mysterious Fulfilment The Prismatic Paintings

At the age of 40, he was a failing artist who struggled to sell a single painting. As he approached 80, Time magazine featured him on its cover. Today, Hopper is considered a giant of modern expression, with an uncanny, unforgettable, and utterly distinct sense for mood and place. Much of Hopper's work excavates modern city experience. In canvas after canvas, he depicts diners, cafes, shopfronts, street lights, gas stations, rail stations, and hotel rooms. The scenes are marked by vivid color juxtapositions and stark, theatrical lighting, as well as by harshly contoured figures, who appear at once part of, and alien to, their surroundings. The ambiance throughout his repertoire is of an eerie disquiet, alienation, loneliness and psychological tension, although his rural or coastal scenes can offer a counterpoint of tranquility or optimism. This book presents major works from Hopper's œuvre to introduce a key player not only in American art history but also in the American psyche.

Book SynopsisLucian Freud dedicated his life to portraying the people in his world without flattery or refinement. Although his technique and style evolved tremendously over the decades, Freud never wavered in his uncompromising standards or unsentimental approach to his subjects. This introduction to Freud’s life and oeuvre opens with an illuminating essay that explores how Freud’s adherence to realism and focus on the human figure moved him in and out of the spotlight until the 1980s when renewed international interest in painting and figuration gave his work a new significance. Stunning reproductions of key works are presented chronologically, allowing readers to see how Freud’s brushwork, composition, and use of light evolved over the decades. Whether he was painting members of the royal family or the cashier at a London nightclub, Freud imbued his portraits with psychological tension, humanity, and a profound interest in the relationship between painter and model.

  • The Art and Science of Ernst Haeckel

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisErnst Haeckel (1834–1919) was a German-born biologist, naturalist, evolutionist, artist, philosopher, and doctor who spent his life researching flora and fauna from the highest mountaintops to the deepest ocean. A vociferous supporter and developer of Darwin’s theories of evolution, he denounced religious dogma, authored philosophical treatises, gained a doctorate in zoology, and coined scientific terms which have passed into common usage, including ecology, phylum, and stem cell. At the heart of Haeckel’s colossal legacy was the motivation not only to discover but also to explain. To do this, he created hundreds of detailed drawings, watercolors, and sketches of his findings which he published in successive volumes, including several marine organism collections and the majestic Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), which could serve as the cornerstone of Haeckel’s entire life project. Like a meticulous visual encyclopedia of living things, Haeckel’s work was as remarkable for its graphic precision and meticulous shading as for its understanding of organic evolution. From bats to the box jellyfish, lizards to lichen, and spider legs to sea anemones, Haeckel emphasized the essential symmetries and order of nature, and found biological beauty in even the most unlikely of creatures. In this book, we celebrate the scientific, artistic, and environmental importance of Haeckel’s work, with a collection of 450 of his finest prints from several of his most important tomes, including Die Radiolarien, Monographie der Medusen, Die Kalkschwämme, and Kunstformen der Natur. At a time when biodiversity is increasingly threatened by human activities, the book is at once a visual masterwork, an underwater exploration, and a vivid reminder of the precious variety of life.Trade Review“…as energetic and colorful as Haeckel’s life. It’s scientific eye candy that feels as fresh as Haeckel’s groundbreaking biological art must have seemed more than a century ago.” * The Washington Post *“A dazzling graphic work...
