  • Theory of Form

The University of Chicago Press Theory of Form

Book SynopsisA pragmatist conception of artistic form, through a study of the painter Gerhard Richter. In this study of the practice of contemporary painter Gerhard Richter, Florian Klinger proposes a fundamental change in the way we think about art today. In reaction to the exhaustion of the modernist-postmodernist paradigm's negotiation of the essence of art, he takes Richter to pursue a pragmatist model that understands artistic form as action. Here form is no longer conceived according to what it saysas a vehicle of expression, representation, or realization of something other than itselfbut strictly according to what it does. Through its doing, Klinger argues, artistic form is not only more real but also more shared than non-artistic reality, and thus enables interaction under conditions where it would otherwise not be possible. It is a human practice aimed at testing and transforming the limits of shared reality, urgently needed in situations where such reality breaks down or turns precarious. Drawing on pragmatist thought, philosophical aesthetics, and art history, Klinger's account of Richter's practice offers a highly distinctive conceptual alternative for contemporary art in general. Trade Review“In this extraordinarily illuminating book, Klinger builds on a painstaking consideration of Richter’s artistic practice to derive a pragmatist theory of artistic form and of form’s ultimate purpose. In addition to its exciting philosophical and art historical interventions, Klinger’s analysis delineates a practical ethics of art-making that deserves to be read by anyone interested in the theory and practice of art in today’s crisis of world-sharing.” -- Whitney Davis, University of California at Berkeley “Theory of Form is a twofold triumph: it presents the most original study of Richter’s aesthetics in recent years, and it is also a groundbreaking contribution to theorizing contemporary art. Remarkably linking form to reaction, judgment, and transformation, it is essential reading for anyone interested in art’s capacity to profoundly touch us and to partake in shaping our world.” -- Amir Eshel, author of Poetic Thinking Today“Klinger’s Theory of Form combines astute philosophical thought with a fascinating close analysis of Richter’s practice, yielding a new understanding of historical time and contemporaneity. It raises the theory of form to another level – indeed, it makes one see how form in art ought to be thought today.” -- Rahel Villinger, author of Kant und die Imagination der Tiere (Kant and the Imagination of Animals)Table of ContentsI Response to a Contemporary Challenge II Morphological Question: Form as Reaction III Poetological Question: Form as Judgment IV Eschatological Question: Form as Transformation V Form as Paradigm? Book SynopsisPaul Kleeone of the preeminent artists of the twentieth centurywas associated with all of the major movements of the first half of the century: expressionism, cubism, surrealism, and abstraction. In this economic and political history, O. K. Werckmeister traces Klee's career as a professional artist, concentrating on the years 1914-20 in which Klee rose from obscurity to recognition in the visual culture of the incipient Weimar Republic. Werckmeister reveals the degree to which Klee, who has been traditionally portrayed as aloof from politics and the vicissitudes of the art market, was subject to and interacted with material conditions. Drawing on rich documentary evidencerecords of Klee's sales, reviews of his exhibitions, the artist's published writings about his art, unpublished correspondence, as well as contemporary criticismWerckmeister follows Klee's transformation from an idiosyncratic abstract individualist to a metaphysical storyteller to mystical sage. Book SynopsisA critical analysis of the art and career of African American painter Loïs Mailou Jones (1905–1998). Examines Jones’s engagement with African and Afrodiasporic themes as well as the challenges she faced as a black woman artist. Trade Review“Books about artist Loïs Mailou Jones have been too few, making VanDiver’s meticulous study a milestone in art, women’s, and African American history.”—Donna Seaman Booklist“While VanDiver has plenty to cover about the artist’s contributions, her prose leaves room for a nuanced look at Jones’s upbringing.”—Eva Recinos Hyperallergic“VanDiver’s ambitious volume certainly deserves a place among scholarly books about ‘New Negro’ artists, such as Renée Ater’s Remaking Race and History and Theresa A. Leininger-Miller’s New Negro Artists in Paris. As these authors did, VanDiver has excavated facts on an artist’s life and work, filling in the substantial gaps in the record about her training and exhibition history.”—Jacqueline Francis, author of Making Race: Modernism and “Racial Art” in America “VanDiver proves that Loïs Mailou Jones was one of the most sophisticated American modernists to look to Africa and the broader African diaspora for artistic inspiration. The author expertly analyzes Jones’s extensive body of work, making important use of interviews, Jones's papers, and archives at Howard University, and she presents strong close individual readings of Jones's paintings and collages.”—Phoebe Wolfskill, author of Archibald Motley, Jr. and Racial Reinvention: The Old Negro in New Negro Art“This monograph not only elevates Jones but is a valuable contribution to the discourse on the visual articulation of Black identity in the twentieth century. Designing a New Tradition should be included in a variety of art history collections, including those with a focus on women artists, Black artists, and the arts histories of Boston and Washington, DC.”—Lynora Williams ARLIS/NA Reviews“Erudite, readable, and generously illustrated, this book is a worthy monument to an important figure in the history of art.”—K. P. Buick Choice“VanDiver has considerably advanced understanding of Jones’s career by contextualizing the artist and her work in light of larger cultural issues and international art movements. [Designing a New Tradition] will be the standard source on Jones for years to come.”—Theresa Leininger-Miller CAA.Reviews“By bringing art history and Black study into direct relation, VanDiver demonstrates how interdisciplinary work can spur new knowledge and new ways of seeing the (Black) world. Not only does the author reclaim the monograph as a valid and enduring form of scholarship; she also reframes Loïs Mailou Jones as a practitioner and proponent of a modernism that is uniquely transnational and Pan-African.”—Tiffany E. Book SynopsisFollowing in the methodological footsteps of his prize-winning Sir Joshua Reynolds: The Painter in Society, Richard Wendorf's new book on British art in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is an experiment in cultural history, combining the analysis of specific artistic objects with an exploration of the cultural conditions in which they were created. Themes include an investigation of what happens when a painter dies, the role of writing around and within visual objects, and the nature of evidence in art history. Extended interpretations of some of the most iconic images in British art, including Constable's Cenotaph, Raeburn's Skating Minister, Stubbs's Haymakers and Reapers, and Rossetti's Prosperpine, Venus Verticordia, and Blessed Damosel, are part of a broader investigation of the ways in which we practice art history today. Book SynopsisThe Luxor Temple of Amun-Re, built to commemorate the divine power of the pharaohs, is one of the iconic monuments of New Kingdom Egypt. In the 4th century C.E., the Roman Imperial government, capitalizing on the site's earlier significance, converted the temple into a military camp and constructed a lavishly painted cult chamber dedicated to the four emperors of the Tetrarchy. These frescoes provide fascinating insight into the political landscape of the late Roman Empire and, as the only surviving wall paintings from the tetrarchic period, into the history of Roman art.The culmination of a groundbreaking conservation project, this volume brings together scholars across disciplines for a comprehensive look at the frescoes and their architectural, archaeological, and historical contexts. Book SynopsisThe second largest city in 17th-century Europe, Naples constituted a vital Mediterranean center in which the Spanish Habsburgs, the clergy, and Neapolitan aristocracy, together with the resident merchants, and other members of the growing professional classes jostled for space and prestige. Their competing programs of building and patronage created a booming art market and spurred painters such as Jusepe de Ribera, Massimo Stanzione, Salvator Rosa, and Luca Giordano as well as foreign artists such as Caravaggio, Domenichino, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Giovanni Lanfranco to extraordinary heights of achievement. This new reading of 17th-century Italian Baroque art explores the social, material, and economic history of painting, revealing how artists, agents, and the owners of artworks interacted to form a complex and mutually sustaining art world. Through such topics as artistic rivalry and anti-foreign labor agitation, art dealing and forgery, cultural diplomacy, and the rise of the independently arranged art exhibition, Christopher R. Marshall illuminates the rich interconnections between artistic practice and patronage, business considerations, and the spirit of entrepreneurialism in Baroque Italy.Trade Review“In this sprawling book . . . the reader is treated to intrigue, competition, and even art fraud and foul play . . . a stimulating reality check that significantly and reliably sheds light on the artistic environment of baroque Naples.”—A. Book SynopsisThe first in-depth exploration of the rise and evolution of abstract, symbolic, and conceptual portraiture in American artTrade Review“While the rise of identity politics since the early 1990s has subjected ideas of the nature and representation of identity to scrutiny, there has been no single publication that focuses on artists’ development of radical alternative strategies in portraiture. The authors of This Is a Portrait If I Say So are to be applauded for addressing this important and neglected subject, and for the original and significant questions that their project raises.”—Paul Moorhouse, National Portrait Gallery, London -- Paul Moorhouse“Given the scholarly attention devoted to portraiture in recent years, and the growing number of major exhibitions that look at the genre, This Is a Portrait If I Say So is a timely intervention. One of its great strengths is the absolutely fascinating and unusual array of portraits chosen for examination.”—Shearer West, University of Sheffield -- Shearer West“[This] book explores how different artists investigate the meaning of identity through a range of issues, from sexuality and technology to race and politics . . . [to] reveal both the expansiveness and the diversity within the genre of American portraiture.”—The Magazine Antiques * The Magazine Antiques *“In a time when identity, politics, and technology are so prevalent in our daily lives, This is a Portrait If I Say So reveals a new narrative of the progression of portraiture in American art.”—Mackenzie Salisbury, ARLIS/NA Reviews -- Mackenzie Salisbury * ARLIS/NA Reviews *
